“ The ICONIC ADANTES were an AMAZING and AWESOME BACKUP GROUP for MOTOWN,” BEAUTIFUL VOICES!!! My favorite song with The ADANTES backing up is, What Becomes Of The Broken hearted, Jimmy Ruffin.
@@divinewilliams3055 ...I love them on Baby I Need Your Loving and My Baby Loves Me. Hadn't really thought about Ask The Lonely but, yeah, you're dead right!
Just like The Funk Brothers, we have to include these unsung ladies. Where would Motown be without them??🤔 Standing In The Shadows of Love, What's Going On, Love Child and Money are just a few of the many songs that fabulous Andantes sang background on, which I love. They had beautiful and tight harmonies. Thanks for bringing attention to these ladies. 💞🎶🎼🎶
And don’t forget the Originals, they were first a backup group than the Andantes did, and then a group of their own with their classic “Baby I’m For Real”, and the rest was history. Unlike the Andantes, the Originals did backup with many other Motown artists like Stevie Wonder and so on. And of course, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, who also did arrangements for all of their Motown hits that joined with the Funk brothers to their music. Motown brought over members of the DSO who was under contract with Mercury Records. DSO did put out a series of classical albums on Mercury’s “Living Presence” series during the 1950’s and 1960’s while Motown was doing overdubs at the time while taking a break from classics albums.
@@Musicradio77Network OMGsh! You named so many Unsung Motown artists! These are the ones Unsung needs to track down. That’s if Berry Gordy doesn’t have an issue with it. It seems like after Florence Ballard, there were no more Unsung artists featured.
My favorite song that they did the background on was Marvin Gaye singing “AIN’T THAT PECULIAR”. The harmony was so tight and beautiful. Thank you so much for the review of them.
The Andantes were a very underrated group, but they made their mark as background vocalist. Their contribution to the Motown Sound is very significant! I believe that the Andantes did the ending vocals on Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me" track from "What's Going On". That track is my favorite track that the Andantes sang background vocals on!
My favorite song The Andantes sang background on has to be “Baby, I Need Your Loving” by the Four Tops. Growing up, I always wondered who those female voices were on the Four Tops’ recordings! It’s nice to finally put faces to the voices!!! 😊
they sang behind diana ross, martha reeves, wanda rogers (of the marvelettes) and cat (of the velvelettes)on amost every recording after summer 1967 instead of the other group members
Wow, the Andantes and the Funk Brothers; the backbone of Motown Empire. Numerous record's now that I listen to them have to wonder why it took so long for their recognition!!! Long overdue
If their talents were utilized in "Reach Out, I'll Be There" by the Four Tops that is my favorite and that record is a masterpiece.. If not, I would say they sounded like angels on "Bernadette". I listen to some Motown almost every day. They are legends as far as I'm concerned. Bless their hearts, I wish HDH had offered them something better than" (Like a ) Nightmare", which was not up to the songwriters' usual compositions, and I wish Gordy had allowed them a few more singles to find the right producer but he was by then under the spell of Miss Ross. No matter.... their voices will be listened to until the world ends. They are bona fide legends.
Fascinating behind the scenes story at Motown. Have to credit Motown having them back up so many many songs, they really did make the music so unique. They really should have gotten more acknowledgement. I first really noticed their singing on The Marvelettes, When You’re Young and in Love, really amazing!
I first came across LIKE A NIGHTMARE on 3 disc CD compilation. The side turned my life upside down! I played the track often and I played it loud! Asides from MOTOWN, many labels seemed to have great sides under their belts that fell short of company promotion. That's just sad, among other things. Too bad all kinds of in house politics and other goings on prevented greatness to be shared equally among record label mates. There exists to this day a treasure trove of exceptional unknown, unreleased sides that no one has heard. Gems all! It's about time somebody stands up and gives these standout performers & performances their due!
@@wyanetonsongsthatareeasyto8112 How? The Andantes sang back-up for them and mostly all other singers and groups at Motown and didn’t even get recognition at any of the Motown anniversaries. Maybe I am misunderstanding your comment.
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but Mary Wilson wrote "Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme," among others. She did not write "The Making of a Dreamgirl."@@jduwayne1
The Adantes were extremely powerful vocalists listen to just one of the most beautifully written songs recorded by the Fantastic FOUR TOPS and that song being "ASK THE LONELY" listen to the beginning of this CLASSIC SONG where these Ladies start with another long version of this Song 💯💥💥💥100Percent ACAPELLA it simply BLOWS the MIND listening to this longer cut version WOW what a POWERFUL SET OF PIPES these Ladies displayed on every MOTOWN song they recorded as background MEGA VOCALISTS 💥💥💯💯🥰🥰🥰LOVED their sound they were the BEST!!!
The lead singers on the Andantes' singles were not sung by any of them. For instance, "Like A Nightmare," their only Motown single, is lead by Ann Bogan, who replaced Gladys Horton in the Marvelettes.
I'm Gonna Make it Up to You Kim Weston song and all the other songs with Kim and Marvin Gaye! So many songs I like hearing the Andantes on all of them.
I just came across this channel and I'm thankful I did, I absolutely LOVE it! I've been waiting for this for a long time. I love the stories, the delivery everything! I think the narrator nails it!!! He's got a smooth voice a great tone and sounds like an intelligent individual and a good reader I have a suggestion if I may… get a better microphone and youre golden. Thank you very much for doing this
Great info. I learned about them a couple years ago, I loved there sound on the track by the 4 Tops "Just Ask The Lonely" a beautiful mix with Levi Stubb's vocals. Thanks again.
I saw an interview with Berry Gordy. He was asked what was the biggest misconception about Motown. Gordy answered that the biggest misconception was that Motown cheated its artists. Hmm. He didn’t ask the numerous artists who died broke. These ladies should’ve long been set for life. The Andantes had too many of my favorites to name one.
One of my favorite songs that featured The Andantes is "Come See About Me(Junior) by Jr. Walker And The All Stars. That's the first song that the group recorded that had background vocals on it.
Its a shame what Mr Gordy did to the some of the artist! Greed comes to mind!! But without lowlifes like him & others we would of never heard some of the greatest performers of that time. The performers today are the wiser & making bank!! Hooray for them!
Very talented ladies. Thanks for posting. My favorites would have to be “Aint that Peculiar “ by Marvin Gaye and “ I Was made to Love Her” Stevie Wonder.
These young ladies are as good and golden as any female group---the Chantels, the Emotions, En Vogue, the Lovelites, the Sequins, the Shirelles, the Supremes or the 3 Degrees. @michele462: A lot of gen x, gen z, millennials aren’t familiar with this history…However even some Baby-boomers didn’t know the Andantes were in-house band just as the Originals enhanced the background on ALL of Motown sound for each producer at Motown (e.g. HDH, Smokey Robinson, Norman Whitfield, Ashford & Simpson, etc)…Berry wanted an assembly-line mentality when producing a song with some mainstays (i.e. The Funk Brothers, Detroit Symphony, The Wrecking Crew, etc) were the necessary parts required to assemble his records…This was the genius of Motown….Just listen & research the personnel on every Motown record and undoubtedly you will find at least one or all the aforementioned included in every record…
According to Mary Wilson's book, the last 5 Diana Ross & the Supremes singles were actually Diana Ross and the Andantes. Even their last hit song Someday Will Be Together, doesnt even have Mary Wilson or Cindy Birdsong on it. I always wondered why the later Diana Ross & the Supremes songs sounded so different. When I read her book I found out why. She said they just started bringing Diana Ross into the studio and didnt even bother calling her or Cindy Birdsong.
To be honest I’m working on it now but it’s gone be awhile for that. Since everyone pretty much knows about Tupac I wanna make sure I get everything right and hit everyone with things they may not know. I just loved them on “Stubborn Kinda Fella “ and “ Hitchhike “. Their voices blend with sweet harmony !!!
That was actually Martha Reeves & The Vandellas backing Marvin on those tracks.
Hitchhike was (unusually) backed by Martha & The Vandellas - not The Andantes.
