"Whizzy wheel" marks are not a good sign, inside any engine.

Very interesting video didn’t know water intrusion caused so much damage due to mixing with the oil. Thought the main concern was rust and hydrolocking the engine

Afraid so. It will wash the oil completely away and leave metal to metal contact.

Yeah. I hear you. But the machine shop takes quite a bit of it and we are in Canada...so our dollar is 30-35% lower in value than the US. So in US $$$ it might $2500ish.

$4k for just a powerhead rebuild on a xflow is very steep! i don't like to go anything over .030'' with these as they can get piston stability issues (galling at skirts is common). great analysis of the damage though! i will add stuck rings will now allow hot exhaust gases to get pumped through crankcase back into the motor, making detonation a very real possibility as well. always do a decarb every season! but agree this is from water intrusion. skirt clearance is especially critical for these (big heavy hot piston crowns and all), and i get customers rebuilding these themselves with new rings in used pistons and probably .008'' of clearance. yikes!

Carbs, waterpump also go hand in hand with the repair. We try to tag .030. Sometimes though...its not possible.
