But I have a question - what thickness can you safely weld? E.g. can you weld two 10 mm thick steel plates together?

You cannot silver solder with a soldering iron.
@@astrecks When answering pedantic with pedantic it's important to make sure you're correct.
As it is in this case, -2 points since you CAN silver solder with a soldering iron (going by the definition of what silver soldering is).
I think what you meant was "you can't solder silver with a soldering iron". If so, you would have been correct as you need higher temps achievable by torch.
Let's take this idea to Boeing.

Yeah, I can’t wait to do this. I’ve been needing to weld two razor blades together and couldn’t figure out how.
This could conceivably be used to “weld” conducting strips to rechargeable batteries in order to wire up custom cells. Otherwise, you could build a cell spot welder from a used microwave transformer.

Little do people know this is how rivets on the hulls of old battleships were welded. They just used bigger pencils.
I think you'll find they were red hot rivets that were hamerd by hand or nematic hamers.

I know nothing about welding but all I can say is as useful as this might be it equally seems dangerous. My sixth sense is saying you don’t want to do this even if a welder as an accident waiting to happen.

For the benefit of those who are commenting on here that he used a welder to make a welder, he used a soldering iron to make a spot welder. Two different concepts.

So, if I want to solder 18650 elements together using magnesium tape, will it work as a spot welding machine?
I don't think you can weld two different metals together like this, plus magnesium is flammable so you might ignite it.
You actually have a carbon arc which is used to remove or gouge out carbon steel. Normally includes compressed air directed at the metal.
If you shield with argon, will the lead last longer? 😂
