I completely understand wanting to have more affordable options however from my understanding there is usually more work that goes into skincare/ bond repair haircare compared to makeup. Because there is a lot of research that goes into whether the stuff can actually work. The creator of k18 is a researcher and professor and im sure a lot of time and money was put into creating K18.

whereas you need science to know if haircare works. like you said they probably didn't take the k18 recipe, well then how are you sure it will do the same thing as k18? in addition they don't provide the same amount of information about their technology compared to k18 which also makes me skeptical. As a friend told me one of her professors said once "you don't have to be the first to do something, you just have to do it best" and if this new brand give results comparable to K18 AND a lower price point, why shouldn't people use it? Yes, they took some packaging and marketing ideas from K18, but why shouldn't they go that route when it will get their product in front of the people most likely to buy it and keep the market competitive. Also, just out of genuine curiosity, I'm wondering if Abbey applies this idea to every product in her life? No store brand food or drug store brand meds only name brands? I'm not trying to hate, but to make a point that this is a pretty high (and expensive/privileged) bar she's setting for herself. Anyways, thanks for the video! Revolution is just more transparent about it than other brands. Plus, is it less ethical to dupe other brands expensive products than it is to sell a product that can be duped so cheaply for such an exorbitant price? Most of the time, that higher price accounts for - once again - corporate greed and profit margins. I actually just started using K18 based on your last video about it, and I really like the results! I was gifted a bottle so I didn't pay for it, but it is something I would considering paying for IF the results were worth it and couldn't be duped by a cheaper product. Disagree with the concept of dupe brands. Companies like Olaplex, Dyson, and k18 are expensive because they factor in R&D into their price point. Some people can afford this, but not everyone can. Olaplex argued that L'Oréal knew what they were doing based on the marketing behind the products as bond builders, and they won which is why those lines have been discontinued. To answer the question of which is better though, I'm honestly not sure. There's not many non-industry studies done on bond-building ingredients, pretty much all of them are done by the manufacturer/company who wants to say their specific ingredient is better, and that's assuming the studies are even available for the public to read.

I just think this would’ve been better framed as a product review rather than a product comparison. Especially since you liked the product??
I just think it barely looks at all like they’re trying to copy k-18. It seems to me like that’s a narrative that didn’t actually come from the brand. You say they’re stealing ideas from k-18 but the ingredients aren’t even the same? This seems like a lot of assumption and judgment. 🤷‍♀️ just odd to me.

I think your stance on the ethical issue of dupe brands is nice, but a bit too idealistic and potentially inconsistent. This is what the whole dupe appeal is about; I actually look to your content for dupes.
Two examples that I'd be curious as to what you thought of: 1) generic brand dupes (CVS, Target, Walgreens, etc) 2) vitamin c serums with ferulic acid and vit e (Timeless vs SkinCeuticals).
With this logic, it seems what would follow is that people "should" either dish out that $180 or just go without, in order to boycott Timeless' unethical product. Makes no sense to me as a consumer.

I have the K18 mask and it’s really lasted me as I only need 2 pumps and only use every 2 weeks (every 3/4 washes). So the cost has been ok for me. In between I use Living Proof Triple Action bond repair every alternate week and the Redken bond repair conditioner. All of these are from your recommendations and have kept my bleached fine hair in beautiful condition. So I kind of don’t mind paying for great results, for products that last. I did pick up the dupe for the Colour Wow Dreamcoat you reviewed and I LOVE it so I guess I’m not against trying dupes if they’re as good or better. This Revolution product doesn’t sound like it will be as good as K18 for my hair so I’ll leave it. But if I was broke I’d definitely buy it.
When I had little money I couldn’t afford scruples around which companies were ripping each other off. Same with skincare. I just wanted something that worked that was in my budget. Now I can afford to splurge when I want to.

Makeup Revolution has a lot of products that aren’t dupes, but those don’t seem to go viral. It’s because of consumers and beauty influencers that we continue to see a rise in dupes, a message has been sent to brands that it’s okay. Their products are much more likely to “go viral” because everyone wants to get their hands on it and compare it to the real deal.

While I agree with the problem with the ethics of the brand, I also understand the financial side for some consumers. K18 is an expensive product, and I’ve used it so I know how good it is, but not everyone can afford to outlay that cost, for most that would be cost prohibitive. So, the fact that this does have good ingredients that will help the hair at a cost most people can afford is very enticing. It’s hard to fault people for wanting to use it for that reason alone. Will I use it? More than likely not, but I’m in a position that I can afford K18, not everyone can. So, I do get the draw and why it will probably sell quite well. No matter what the ethics are regarding the brand.

I honestly do not see anything wrong/unethical/unlawful unless they stole the formula from K 18 or something... I can totally make an opposite argument, the Revolution company is offering great quality products to people who otherwise would not be able to afford them. K 18 is extremely costly, I can't imagine their ingredients are so much more costly than the ones used in this dupe. It kind of reminds me of the prices of medications in the US (extremely expensive) versus the same medications in Canada, Mexico or Europe, India (more affordable) In the end its a matter of who is less ethical the company that charges extremely high prices or the company that offers similar good results but at lower prices.

I think dupes are great, and sometimes even better than the original. The sole issue I have with this is that nowadays every brand and their aunt came out with a bond repairing line and I feel like it is misleading as these key ingredients are patented (think Olaplex or K18). Now, I do think that K18 is overpriced and I personally always look for some sort of sale on several websites. I have just managed to get a 150ml bottle for $84 here in Denmark, and it is probably going to last me a whole year, therefore it really is worth it. I suppose this would be the a good way to approach K18's pricing, but otherwise one should always go for whatever is best for them. Everyone deserves to feel pampered, regardless if something is labeled "high end" or not. At the end of the day, it's just a hair product and not an "all or nothing" type of situation - the mental well-being of knowing that you got yourself something nice without breaking the bank is perhaps even more important than whether you're using K18 or a dupe.

If a brand has a truly innovative product/ingredient, they will get a patent for it ... and "dupes" will be copycats that can't actually duplicate the product. I put both Olaplex and K18 in here ... they have parented their "secret sauce" ingredients.
Once the patent expires, anyone can create the ingredient and use it. Or if a product can't be patented (such as the idea of using amino acids in hair products), also anyone can use the idea. But this is not a *dupe*, it's a different product with similar end results.
It sounds like Revolution took the general idea of "peptides and amino acids in hair care" and made a mask with it, that does good things for hair. The formulation does not dupe anything. However, Revolution's marketing department chose to sell it as a dupe ... which is wrong, and shady.
I have no plans to buy this ... I'd rather not encourage this style of marketing. But the product might be good, despite the bad sales tactics.
At least Revolution is keeping their cosmetic chemists busy doing creative work. There are several brands selling extremely overpriced products that are no different from the basics you can find in the drugstore ... those are the ones that really annoy me. [I won't name names, but the initials on some are BS, LM, AB]

Well I completely bleached that small part of hair and dyed it brilliant dark blue. Consequently that part went completely straight, no curls whatsoever. After Olaplex, washing nº 0, nº3 , one and a half units. My hair improved. But after the six uses os K18, once or twice a week, that portion of my hair, the one destroyed by bleach, is curly again. Is curly as the rest of my hair, no. But is melting fine and is not feeling off. So I need that reparation, no copycats, no something that just deep condition. That part of my hair was totally destroyed and now is good.
By the way, I have dark hair, so I need, at least two rounds of bleach to accomplish white enough to blue to be blue and not green.

on another note, my hair stylist has started using K18 instead of Olaplaex as a mix into the tint but after experiencing it and getting educated I don't know how to convey to her that this is not a substitute without seeming like the peanut gallery who "googled" what she studied. Any advice?

will k18 benefit your hair if you don't color it? i was getting breakage from hormonal changes and wanted something to help my brittle hair... now that my hair seems to have normalize i didn't know if i should continue k18.. i like how my hair looks afterwards. but was unsure if it was unnecessary or even might do damage to my hair (if that's possible)... thanks!

I use it and don’t color my hair. I mainly use it as “maintenance” for healthy ends and to help with my hair growth goals

But if they didn’t look like they were trying to dupe K18….would you have purchased and reviewed them? Would people have asked for the review?

Running my own business the last 3 years, I went in thinking I can sell this for way less! But then I started to pay taxes and payroll, inventory, rent and many other things. Now I understand why I need to sell a product that people think should be cheap but in order for me to sell it without losing I need to sell it at a certain price

I think what she means by “rip off other brands” is the obvious packaging similarities. In a day and age of nearly endless products, we as consumers should support brand/businesses based off of our own convictions. So if cruelty-free matters to you then opt for brands that prioritise that. If a brand that plays the copycat bothers you then opt for a different brand (seems a bit shallow and pathetic to go that route, but to each their own).

I cannot put protein in my hair. It turns brittle and dull. And, proteins are being put into so many product lines. Ugh.

K18 is way too overpriced, so I'll happily order the Revolution product now that I have bleached hair. I'm not paying 60 bucks for 50 ml of product. Yikes. Thanks for the review!

How did you learn so much about cosmetic ingredients and even a little about formulation? I’m a hairstylist and would love to become more educated on all of this! Thank you ❤ love all your videos!!

How does one use K-18 on virgin type 4 hair? There's no way I could successfully apply the way in which she applies it in this video. I want to try it but it seems like it would be a waste of money since I don't see how I could possibly apply it accurately and truly get it on all my strands as she does.

Now there's a new K18 dupe called i.N.O. hair mask for $40. Do you think you could do a review of that one? Thanks for everything you do, Abbey!

But the dupes didn't pay for years of research that Olaplex & K18 did. They did all the work, spent all the money & they only recoup those costs if & when the product makes it to market. Dupes should be ILLEGAL.

I have a question so if you put the K 18 in your hair then wait four minutes and put a conditioner in your hair. You have to rinse the conditioner out. Isn’t that going to rinse the K-18
