@BackstageScience What I think is the case is that yellow indicates that it is a single mode cable, blue single mode with polarization and that the black indicates that there are multiple cables inside the cable. (sorta like that electric cables have blue/brown/green-yellow cables to indicate certain things) :O
@uut0 i would think its to stop light bleeding in of the wrong colour if you had a red cable on the red laser then you might collect another wavelength of red light but a different colour cable would absorb any red light instead of reflecting it
Would vacuum space act best as low-loss medium for initial transmission to the arms? Does the head have moving parts which would make the cable a necessity? Finally, is the fuzziness the result of something cool, like a massive EM field from a molecular trap?
During a "Take your child to work" day: Son: Father, when I grow up, I want to be a scientist just like you. Dad: Good son. Now, tell me. What color light does the yellow cable transmit? Son: Yellow light? Dad: Wrong. It's red light. Now, tell me what color light does the blue cable transmit? Son: Blue light? Dad: Wrong. It's green light. Now, tell me what colour light does the black cable transmit? Son: A colour that is neither red nor green! Dad: Wrong again. Son grows up to be a politician.
Great to see the equipment setup, I believe we haven't yet begun to realize the full potential of what can be done with Laser light.
Good work.
That last minute or so in regards to linking whole galaxies and single cells was particularly interesting.
Science is science, from any part where you start if you have the will to go deep you will a find a place with no boundaries.

Best video title ever.
Dark in here, because Laura is DOING SCIENCE.
@LechuCzechu oh how I wished they called it the duodecimpus... that would be cool!

-no joke! :)
@Films4You thats why its named the horsehead nebula
@BackstageScience
Cheaper than having a custom fiber optic cable made to match the colors.

Octopuses with FRICKIN LASER BEAMS ATTATCHED WITH THEIR FRICKIN HEADS!
I have the same sound for my school fire alarm.

Isn't it kinda confusing that the yellow cable transmits red light, the blue green light and the black one 3 different colors?
I expected octopi with frickin' laser beams on their heads.
i was very disapointed after seeing the title.
Actually that was not a tipical microscope, but an inverted microscope...
The good old GFP and stuff : D haha
Holy shit!
By optical tweezers you mean tractor beam right. Just say tractor beam it's 100% cooler.
@BackstageScience i guess the company was running out of plastic, and used what they had
@uut0 hmm, I'm sure there is some logical reason!? :)
I was expecting to see something completely different...
Slightly worrying that they'd install the likes of adobe reader on these systems.
He sounds like Mr Bean!
Weeeeee
