DON'T sign a contract with a major label. Learn how to record, mix and master your recordings or seek out people you can trust to help you with that. Learn promotion and if you feel you need help research promo companies and find one that can be trusted to help you. You can book shows at smaller and medium sized venues that don't deal with Ticketmaster for your tour. You won't be a millionaire but you could make a middle class living and stay sane and safe.

I know so many people doing this with absolutely no success.
There’s no difference to if you are on a record label or not (except independently doing it is a lot higher)
Only a small few make it; most don’t
But I think creatives and musicians should do it cause it feeds their soul. No success otherwise most will be disappointed

wow this hits very close to home. i'm happy for raye and that she found the courage and support to be as vocal about her experience as she has been. i spent years playing sideman on songs i'd written myself that got huge (how hard i try with filous, coming over with kygo and dillon francis), and it's only this year that i'm finally able to release independently again. most people don't care to hear the darker parts of the story or consider the effect it has on your psyche and career. i've literally done high-profile radio tours (kcrw with kygo) and massive shows (coachella with dillon francis and kygo) where i came on as a guest artist playing my own song. and there are many others like me out there, each with their own story.

Very interesting. Having worked in the music industry in the 80s/90s and then had a 20 year career change, I'm looking at it now from the outside and it's fascinating seeing the changes (and similarities) over that time, with the evolution of delivery and access to the music industry. I love this success story and I'm enjoying how the artists can overcome the corporate machine - in a way that independent labels grew out of the punk scene back then.

I've been a massive fan of Raye's since I first heard that Jax Jones collab she was talking about. I remember thinking "who is this girl with this unique voice"? I quicky got my hands on her 2 (at the time) EP's and started downloading ALL of her features and non album singles (there are too many to count). I even remember thinking where the hell is her proper debut album? Then when she announced she left Polydor to go independent I was proud but honestly gave up my dream of her making it big. A year later I see on Billboard in NORTH AMERICA (she had never reached our side of the world previously) that Escapism was quickly rising up the charts and her album went #1 in the UK. I was so shocked but so proud that she did that all independently so quickly after she told her label to f**k off! Tick tock really can assist these artists to becoming the next big thing (Doja Kitty anyone?). And although I wasn't too fond of the album itself because it was such a massive change from her previous singles, I still haven't stopped being so excited for her.

My honest take is that most business kinda eat you up and chew you out, that's the world. I guess we have the freedom of leaving a job, but that knowledge for better or for worst seems to only come when we're older and realize our time is worth more than that job. Artists have it rough in a way, because their whole life purpose is to be entertaining, and you either make it or you don't, there's no in between, so until you do, it's like shit all the time, and you still gotta work. There's only one thing that's for sure, we're not sure of anything, so put your heart and soul into something you believe in, like she tells us by the end of the video. What happened to her is trash, but we all got demons we gotta live with, let's not forget our world is built by fire, don't let your demons take hold of you, use them to your advantage, like she did.

but she's not independent; she's signed to an independent LABEL! that put a lot of money into her... so pls state the FACTS so other artists don't dream an impossible dream. Does she deserve it? totally! but she is NOT an independent artist

Raye looks like the lady in the Twilight Zone episode "clap" or something ... Where the lady got a coin and became a sensation overnight.

Nobody talks about this, but basing your career on hits where you appear on a DJ feat is because your record company hates you. You don't appear in the videos, they don't mention you, and they don't associate you with that success. You only gave "the voice".

This is the reality of the music industry. The industry is there to limit your choices to the few acts that they have selected so you pay them for the privilege. If artists work direct to the audience, there’s no business model for the industry. So they create barriers to keep out 90% and sign up the talent that is breaking through so THEY can decide what becomes big, not you. Every label wants a few megastars rather than lots of smaller artists as that would be bad for their profit margins. So, it’s up to you, the audience, to reject what you are spoon fed by the fame factories and go out there and find the artists you like and then *pay them for their work*. Simple facts. Everything else is just BS.

Raye is not your typical mainstream artist. I believe there’s more layers to her own personality. Her music speaks volumes on what kind of person she is.
