Good evening. I am a doctor from Tunisia (Arab country in North Africa). Here, the French is our seconde language and doctors need medical English to present their works in medical meetings but unfortunately we face difficulties especially to pronounce the names of many diseases and microorganisms. I should be grateful if you present in your videos (how to pronounce) the name of some diseases and parasites particularly difficult to pronounce, such as "Leishmaniasis, Hydatidosis, Echinococcus, etc .Thank you in advance.
Please teacher D= I desesperately need minimal pairs like "year" and "ear". I was shocked when told they arent homophonous. Cant tell the difference for my life! Please, help. That video came at the right time.
The difference, I think, for "year," is that I believe you need to have your tongue closer to the roof of your mouth and farther forward for the y consonant (as opposed the the long e vowel sound), while having air pass through that very narrow path between the two, before you move your tongue back to make the "ee" sound in the rest of the "year" word. I wanted to know how to show this to students, since they are used to saying the "ee" sound for y, which presents a problem when they have to say "year," since it will sound like "ear," but I'm not sure if this explanation works.
excelente Rachel, deberías hacer todos los videos así donde se ven los movimientos de los labios y lengua cuando pronunciamos porque eso es lo que hace la diferencia de tu gran trabajo entre tu y los otros profesores de RUclips, eres de gran ayuda. bendiciones!
I'm so confused about the way how native speakers pronounce this combination "a consonant/ a vowel + [jən]". For example: * [g] + [jən] in argument [ˈɑːrɡ.jə.mənt], is it pronounced the same as [gju:], meaning that we can pronounce this word [ˈɑːrɡ.ju:.mənt] *[n] + [jən] in onion [ˈʌn.jən] *[ɪl] + [jən] in brilliant [ˈbrɪl.jənt]
I discovered your channel some weeks ago and I love it! Videos are very interesting and helpful. Thanks for sharing these lessons. I really apreciate your support. Thank you so much!
Hi Eslam Mawad. For single words a good thing to learn the pronunciation is to use Google Translator. For big sentences it is not recommended, but for single words it is very nice.
I don't know but for me google translator pronunciation is correct. If you want we can talk via skype then we can help one each other. What do you think?
i'm afraid i can't cause i've much work to do for university these days.....maybe we can talk another time...thanks....and what's your nationality by the way?
Hi Rachel! Greeting from Japan and thank you for your great videos. They help me a lot! Yet I find it really difficult to pronounce Y after N consonant. like the word, California. The last syllable is [njə] and I cannot lift the middle part of the tongue that quick... I would appreciate it if you could give me a tip for that. Anyway thank you always for your great videos !
Hi! Great question! Try making the N sound with more of the tongue lifted in the mouth - that adjustment may make it easier for you to quickly move into the Y consonant sound. Many consonant sounds shift the way the exact tongue position depending on what sound comes next - this is a great example of this!
It's been a while I'm trying to speak English, but I don't have native English folks to train with. My writing skills, as you can see, aren't the best of me. I'm better listening.
HEY... RACHEL... PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON PRONUNCIATION OF THE WORD "BETTER".. SOMETIMES IT BECOME VERY PROBLEMATIC TO USE BETTER IN A SENTENCE... "BATTER" AND "BETTER" ALSO SOUNDS SIMILAR... YOUR EFFORTS WILL BE APPRECIATED...
Does the tounge touches the roof of mouth? Is there a small space between the tounge and the roof of mouth? Can the side of tounge touches the inside of upper teeth? Thank you in advance!
There is a small space between the top of the tongue and the roof of the mouth, but the sides of the tongue will touch the inside of the upper teeth - yes!
Rachel all videos are Fine But I Face Problem With sound "R" I Can Repeat It Rrrrrrr "Hard Sound" ok But problem With Soft Sound R Can You Put Any Links May Help Me With This problem Regards
For me the sound J is the same as / i: /. I can't hear the difference. For exemple yellow in my mind is iellow , you = iou and young = ioung . Help me .
The IPA symbol [j] actually represents the Y consonant sound. But actually, the Y consonant (as in 'yes, yellow') and the J consonant (as in 'jump, justice') are both voiced!
To you is easier to pronounce correct because you are an American but I'm Peruvian to me is so difficult .I think that there should have be a video where someone teachs it speaking in Spanish to understand better. I hate English.😣 I am going to give up.

What means 'push' in this sentence ? -As we push the tongue forward on the roof of the mouth, we close the vocal cords to get this sound.

It means you are pressing your tongue up and against the roof of the mouth behind the upper teeth!

Hi Eslam Mawad. For single words a good thing to learn the pronunciation is to use Google Translator. For big sentences it is not recommended, but for single words it is very nice.
