- Alan Highers helped found the Getwell School of Preaching only to have rumors close its doors. Highers debated alongside Reuel Lemmons who would later assist Alan's opponents. Though Highers recommended Rubel Shelly to be his replacement at Getwell they faced each other at the FHU open forum sixteen years later.

Rubel Shelly's Interview • Rubel Shelly: History ...
Excellent interview. "The division that should never have been" is a quote from brother Highers that rings true. Respect each other's honest convictions - and let's be about the Father's Work of saving souls.
Caleb, thank you for this work. As a non institutional brother and long time resident of Memphis Bro. Higher is truly a gentleman and held with regard. The drifting within history must be constantly studied. My father Connie Adams considers him a dear friend.
Martin,
Your Father was actually one of the men I was referencing. He had such an impact on me in my early preaching career.
I greatly appreciate these interviews (Shelly, Highers). They are very well done and the history is invaluable.
I'm a 1972 graduate of MSOP and I've never known those details about the move from Getwell. During my time at the school Getwell was always spoken of favorably and the Spiritual Sword was handed out frequently. I always thought highly of Bro Highers and his work and was surprised to hear about the chip on the shoulder of the MSOP graduates. I, personally never saw that, Some of the men I never had contact with after leaving school but all in all the ones I kept in contact with, were humble Godly men, Several of them have gone on to eternity and I'm waiting my turn. At 86 I still preach twice each Lords day and direct a bible class. I preach at Milton WV AM and Glenwood WV, PMs..I have a 12 hour day leaving the house about 8 am and I get back to my home in Ohio at 8 PM. I drive total about 140 miles during that time. During my time at Memphis myself and 2 other men studied with and converted the membership of a United Methodist Church..and I believe that they grew to occupy the former Knight Arnold meetinghouse..The other 2 men were Michael Light and JimBullington. I enjoyed the interview..Paul Drake,South Point, Ohio..
Thank you for fighting the good fight and keeping the faith. Hopefully, you'll have many more years ahead of you.
That brother is so sharp at his age! So much knowledge.
Yes brother Highers, "a spirit of toleration", you hit the nail right on the head.
Absolutely! It is quite possible that one could attend a church of Christ for months and come away with the idea that we are just a Baptist Church without a piano.
In Brother Highers' discussion of the Arlington meeting, He said Brother Lemmons told him, "They like you." I spent several years preaching among Non-Institutional Churches of Christ, and started in the early 2000s, and that was largely true in recent years. Brother Highers was highly respected by the older NI brethren that I often associated with. I think it says so much about a man's character when those with whom he disagrees hold him in high regard.
Great Interview.
Excellent interview. I've known him for fifty years, and from what I can see, he's up for another debate. He is THE most influential member of the church in this area, and his mind is still sharp. I pray that he gets some relief from his physical ailments which greatly hamper his work. And Roy Cogdill wasn't always so tough: read the introductory remarks to Cogdill's own publication of God's Prophetic Word. The problem with Roy is that he started down the road of anti-ism and didn't know when to stop. And Bro Highers (and Ben Bogard) were spot-on in their comments on debaters.
A.C. Grider also said that Alan Highers was the best debater on the Institutional side.
This is a very interesting interview! I have many sermons that brother Highers preached on a Memphis radio station back in the ‘70s that we plan to digitize and upload to the Progressive Primitivist. Many of these I listened to so much that I preached them almost verbatim in my early days of preaching. In personal conversations, Curtis Cates spoke critically of brother Highers’s claims about having played such a key role in the founding of MSOP.
Was Bro Cates even present when MSOP was founded?
No, he was recommended by Garland Elkins to replace Roy Hearn as the director in the early ‘80s.
@@mikehisaw3186 Then he was, for whatever reason(s), speaking on a topic about which he had no direct knowledge. Remember, the MSOP was once known as the Getwell School of Preaching (or Getwell-at-Dunn), and of course Bro Highers was the pulpit minister during all of that time. Certainly he played a key role, as did others, in getting the school started. I have no idea why Bro Cates would be critical of him or his role. What I can't figure out is how a truck backs up and just starts loading things - and nobody says or does much of anything. A man who was a federal judge, class A debater, sought-after guest speaker, and edits the Spiritual Sword has no need to embellish his role.
@@mikehisaw3186 It is my understanding that Bro Elkins left the Getwell congregation under less-than-honorable circumstances. At least the lady who operated the Spiritual Sword book shop back in the back indicated this, but did not desire to go into any details.
great interview. i find very few members of the Lords church (rom 16:16) know anything of the hx of the church or the old gospel preachers or the work they did. SAD.
as a student of yours and johnny. im still learning at 80y/o. keep preaching 2 Tim 4:2. jp
Great observation
That was an awesome interview. Thank You.
Great Interview, Thank You
Before the denominations have to defend their use of instruments, the restoration movement has a burden to prove that we NEED to defend the use of instruments. Until the restoration can prove that a defense is required, none will be offered. And we who use them will be the final judges of their argument. Balls in your court.
So you would agree with any Methodist who said, "Immersionists need prove why we need to defend infant baptism"?
@@calebrobertson9589 Great question. This is a category error. Instruments were in use for over 1500 years when Christ came on the scene. So if someone requests proof that instruments are acceptable, they have to prove that something already being done needs a defense. Infant baptism is not in the bible anywhere, so they might need to prove their case.
The difference is that musical instruments were already there, while infant baptism is not.
@@HeLivesForever25 - So you are now making arguments to defend the use of instrumental music today? You just said in your original comment that you did not have to.
@@calebrobertson9589 I didn't make an argument. I answered your question.
@@calebrobertson9589 I didn't make any arguments. I answered your question.
Brother Highers' book is difficult to find, but very pertinent to today's religious climate. I believe a reprint may be in order, so that those of us who weren't around for it's first printing can have the opportunity to engage with it's material.
You're right. I thought it would be easy to find, but I only saw two (both overpriced) on eBay.
Good point with having fellowship with brethren on the instrument argument vs the institutional argument.
seems to be hypocritical to fellowship one and not the other.
I just happened to start watching this interview and im glad it is mainly over the topic of institution/anti because it is a hot topic for me atm and i need to study it.
Is that gods providence that i stumbled upon this?
idk.
anyways, I greatly enjoy your interviews!
i would love to see you guys debate matt delahunty on athiesm
i think that would do a lot of good.
I'm not "non-institutional" but I'm not necessarily pro-bible school. Daniel Sommer (publisher of the American Christian Review) and his his son, D.A., opposed Bible colleges becuse they believed they were unwarranted to do the work assigned to the church. Perhaps they were on to something.
On April 18th I recorded a three-hour-long interview with Steve Wolfgang. Daniel Sommer is heavily discussed in that interview.
@@calebrobertson9589 sounds interesting. Is it uploaded on this channel? I know Steve grew up at the Emerson Ave church in Indianapolis which 100 years ago was known as the North Indianapolis Church of Christ. North Indianapolis was the Sommer family's church from the 1890s to the 1970s. Daniel Sommer was the man who taught Carl Ketcherside when Carl was young.
@@lawvere - The Wolfgang interview is not yet posted, but it is coming "Soon" (within this summer).
Right now, we all need to be working hard to get Donald Trump elected this November … THIS IS PRIORITY #1, 2, 3 for all Christians right now!!
Luke 9:49-50
New International Version
49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”
Who do you think disagrees with Luke 9:49-50?
Are you saying Alan Highers should not have opposed Herald of Truth in 1973?
I think we should be debating everything lifestyle, personally, etc people are so confused
Jesus said I set a man at variance ( discrepancies) with his father. Unfortunately theologians take no comments or objections seriously.
no clue what you meant? please say it another way
@@BibleSaysTV Thanks for your reply I'm honored. I believe Jesus was more so saying religous discrepancies are the unsolved equation in the solution to unity. Can you agree?
My second point comes from the fact theologians seek validation for there affiliation with a certain believing body than they will understanding the discrepancies and being intellectual minded enough to stop believing the erroneous concocted fallacy. Can you agree?
I spoke with Caleb about a year ago . He's very to the point . Maybe if we alloted more time to talk we could enjoy another conversation.
