Old man here of almost 60. My best friend is 65. If you keep healthy, thrust me, you can still enjoy life as if you're younger. When I visit my friend, we go mountain biking, hiking and enjoying the natural beauty of wild Michigan. He lives in the Manistee national forest. Being out in nature is so refreshing and hope to enjoy these times until I can't.

My mom always dreamed of traveling, so at age 10 I told her I was going to take her around the world. At age 23 I did it. People said I should buy a home with that money including Mom, butt I insisted. There were lots of old people on the trip, too old to get off the bus. I vowed to travel while I was young. Mom and I did over the next ten years. Oh, the memories. I’m pushing 70 now and smile when I remember Mom on that trip. I have a home now and I’m not sitting around thinking about how much fun it was to buy.

Totally agree with this book. I'm in my 40s now and I don't want to travel anymore, but in my 20s it was my raison d'etre. All I wanted was adventure. Now I want to be financially responsible and cozy in my own home. See the world while you're very young!

I've read this book as well. I agree that investing in experiences is more valuable than buying expensive toys. But since none of us knows how long we will live or what kind of care we will need in old age, I would not want to burden my kids with my care because I spent all my money having fun.

Yes. I think this video contradicted the entire catalogue of videos on this channel. Dying with nothing is not a wise strategy, it’s irresponsible and foolish. We should all try to have a strategic reserve for rainy day, emergencies, and crises. To die with that reserve still in place is not a failure - it means you were prepared at least financially and the fact that you didn’t need to use it means that a loved one will receive the benefit of it for their future.

@@paddymurphy-oconnor8255 I agree. This video does stand out among all of Austin's others. Many of the points made here sound agreeable in a vague, philosophical way, but overall, the message is naive. Carpe Diem rarely serves anyone well.
Also, I have an argument with the vision of work presented. It makes work sound like it's nothing but an unpleasant necessity to be endured. For many that's true, but not for all. "Money is life's energy"? Well, your work, itself, can also be life's energy. I was a nurse for 40 years. Often it was hard, physically and emotionally. Often there was drudgery involved. But there was also the repeated experience of making a material difference in someone else's life. Money can never represent that energy.

A strategic reserve of money for emergencies and unforeseen costs is essential. If you die without having spent that money, then you can leave it to a family member who will benefit from it. You didn’t have your crisis and a family member gets to enjoy it instead. It’s all good. It’s not a good strategy to live from paycheck to paycheck because you don’t have that strategic reserve.

I just added this book to my reading list, thank you! I couldn't agree more with the points you've made, my husband and I chose to travel when we were younger because I have a degenerative disease and knew if I waited, I might not get to do it. Yeah, we could have paid for an entire house (and then some) with the money we spent traveling, but I can't trade those experiences, nor would I choose to. We have slowed down considerably over the past few years and I'm so glad we chose to do it the way we did, no regrets at all. Nothing in life is guaranteed.

The challenge is knowing how much you'll need for those last years (assuming you live to be old). The amount you might need for home health care, for example, can be astronomical. The alternative is spending down till you're eligible for Medicaid and ending up in a nursing home (at government expense). In the USA at least, getting old, having either spent all your money on experiences or given your money to your kids (who may or may not return the favor), is a big gamble. Excellent video as always, Austin!

Johnny had a guest, an older, well-dressed fellow, who was sailing around the globe on cruise ships pretty much non-stop as a way of living out the rest of his life. He said his goal was to spend all of his money before he died and to make his children pay the expense of burying him. Even as a child I found that brilliant. I subscribe to the same mentality even today, almost 50 years later.

Important to have enough money to enjoy life then as well. Guess the balance is a key. That said there are a couple of hobbies I want to start In retirement that I could probably do when I’m younger. Great presentation with many spot-on points from the perspective of a 70 year old.

Ok if you're 65 you have way more years behind you than ahead for alot of you this is hard for you to digest. Even if you were fortunate enough to live till 90 it doest change the fact that your in the early autumn of life. Most people at 60 still want to travel and be active but by 75-80 most do not so its a very small window to the other end of the spectrum.

I already see the push back in the comments. You are making too many stereotypical assumptions about age, likes and dislikes. Let’s take your 20, 40 and 70 year olds. The 20 year old may have a baby, the 40 year old may not (or not yet)have children, and the 70 year old may be traveling most of the year, really, too tired to leave the house? Here are facts….you have no idea when you will die, you can be 3, 30, 80 or any age. You can live a very healthy lifestyle and still become ill with heart disease, cancer, etc… What makes an extraordinary life is different for each and every one of us. You may love traveling and I may hate it. So travel memories could have very little value for someone that does not enjoy traveling. But maybe owning their own land that they can garden would bring so much joy (gardening is not my thing). My father who is 81 would love to sell the house and spend it all to zero, but “legacy” to his wife of 42 years is so much more important. None of what they worked for or inherited will be a waste in her mind.

Money can provide a benefit after the person dies if the money will help to take care of a child with special needs. The parent of a person with special needs buys peace of mind when they build up their estate to provide one day for their surviving child.

I never spend money on entertainment and foolisness. Every dollar I have goes into investment and I have more than enough experience. Tourist travels and expensive restraurants are not my cup of tee. I hope that uranium bull can continue for a while as I am deeply positioned in thaat sector. I hate to spend money and love to save money so its a sport to grt everything as cheap as possible by pressing and manipulationg the sellers.

Such a naive point of view from someone with no kids. My parents did just what you advised/the book, except that when they had to go to nursing homes for alzheimer'they had absolutely no money and my sisters and I as their adult children had to pay for years of expense, meanwhile having our own children'to put through college. That is basically counting on your relatives to pay for your selfish attitude

At least you said nos vemos chico better this time, but you are still missing the S at the end of chico, remember you have more than one chico watching your videos so it is correct to say nos vemos chicos!

Sounds like he was mimicking an idiom from the past, same tone, accent and expression, probably there was no "grammar referee" involved.

I think this depends on your skills/talents.
Im 50, but have spent all the money i could while young, on... art, musical instruments, tattoo shop equipment, recording studio set up.
Today im blessed with the available experience to perform music live, record albums, tattoo, produce artwork. All at a minimum upkeep cost.
I'll own this equipment till im no more.
Im great full i focused my finance on these experiences.
I hadn't even considered the value of my equipment going up and up, id assumed over the years, my equipment would NOT be valuable in my future.
Thx to unrealistic unreasonable increase in costs?
ALL my equipment keeps increasing in value.
Example: i bought my Marshall stack for $2500
Today? My model is $3500 used, $4500 new
My guitar, i bought a les paul for $1200, today? Its worth $2000 used.
If our economy keeos in this direction... ill retire by selling my drums...😂

If you’re going to die with zero, the kids will probably murder you earlier than allow you to die a natural death.
If you’ve been too busy making money to be a good parent, kids may miss you at first and be a little resentful but once they’re working with their own family, they’ll understand… and be thankful - same we have all experienced sometime or the other.. 😊❤

You wouldn't know if you will reach the age of 90. There's so many factors that can make our life shorter or longer. Some are in our control some are from our environment (e.g. accidents, calamity, etc.)
