- Retired Special Agent Chris Ronay describes the FBI's role in the investigation of an "undefeatable" 1,000-pound bomb at a Nevada casino in 1980. See related story at: www.fbi.gov/page2/august09/har...
It is absolutely amazing how the evidence was recovered and the device was reverse engineered, despite the damage done. That is amazing work.
timothylegg nah they are annoying.
They think they know all and wont give up unless they find the killer.
Cops are such weak people in the universe need a lot of partners and swat team just to take down one person lol.
@@bowens9211 Lmao how is that being weak? Weak people can't work together.
Just reserved a room and went to check on hotel reviews....and this is what I found...
Just read an article about this in a History magazine.
The perpetrator John Birges lived quite a life, ran away from Home, joined the Hungarian Air Force, flew for the Luftwaffe, he claims that he spied for the Americans, was sent to a gulag in which he got experience with explosives while working on a railway line, moved to California and opened several gardening stores, became a millionaire, sold his business and promptly gambled away his fortune.
The guy was exceptional, still you have to wonder if a bit of humility would have saved him from himself.
How was he exceptional? I just see a felon war criminal who wrongfully got a second chance in a new country and was successful in opening up some stores.
@@forestgirl4071 he created the single most difficult and hardest to crack bomb ever invented which left the FBI stunned. Not saying he's a good guy, but he definitely was a smart guy.
@@mame9562 He certainly made sure to think about any way one would try to disable a bomb and added the necessary mechanisms to undermine each solution.
@slitor actually he fooled you, he made up the Luftwaffe and gulag crap to biographers before his death, not a single tiny bit of evidence has been found that backs up anything he's said like that lol
Sword & Scale sent me Googling this explosion.
same. how this isn't a Michael Mann-esque major motion picture is beyond me.
Ha ha ha ...same here Great episode like always💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
Same here. Trying to find more about the people involved.
Same
Same here! Love Sword and Scale and this story was fascinating.
that bomb saved me alot of cash- I ran up 7500 in markers -iou's to a casino aint no joke. i was on my way out of town, just pulled out of the parking lot.- worried i might not get far, when the place blew up. the markers were the cashiers cage which was destroyed. i got the hook for the 7500- and never heard from harvey's- and never went back to tahoe. one time in reno the pit boss recognized me and i ducked out. I don't condone violence, but I was in a bad spot and things just blew my way.
If the markers were destroyed, you didn't owe anything. No need to run away from the bit poss.
They evacuated the place well before the bomb went off, you’re full of shit.
I love how the casino and the gamblers set up bets for when or if the bomb would go off
TIL: The FBI has their own RUclips channel!
So does the CIA, NSA, White House, etc.
+Elites Engineering Of course we have our own channel you dumb.
That how we do our "spying".
NSA Too bad you're the fake NSA.
+Elites Engineering That' IT!!! You're are sentenced to 14 days without WiFi for insulting an US organisation.
NSA I don't use WIFI, wired through a network filter is the best option.
I remember the T-shirts they were selling - "I got bombed at Harveys"
I remember those too.
"Okay but whose gonna let him blow up a casino?"

A third-floor witness said idiots who worked in the building were the “wildest and craziest.” They “seemed delirious,” he recalled, “and had to be held to keep them from jumping out.” One clerk thought the building had been dynamited. Dust lingered in the air, making it difficult to breath
People took bets on whether the bomb would explode or not and this was encouraged by the neighboring casinos.😳
Talk about dedication to the craft.
I owned radio station KRLT and our broadcast equipment and our antennae was in the building and on the roof. It was quite a sight .. not happy with the fact that we were off the air for 6 weeks with no income. Harvey Gross was such a gentleman and so worried about his employees. What a day !!!!

I was camping with my folks up at Woods Lake off Hwy 88 when this happened and we heard it clear as day. Scary :(

Casinos are bad anyways duh
@@sakariaskarlsson634 + explosions are 😎
I love how the people cheered
You can't never underestimate the creativeness of the human mind. At least the bomber did give warning to allow evacuation. but of course it would nave sucked if someone had accidentally move it and it detonated,
I was a student at South Tahoe Intermediate school when this happened, my dad worked at the south shore room at Harrah's when they actually had good talent including the rat pack.
I was 7 when this happened. My father was lead on this.
You must have spent a lot of time in the Harrah's arcade then. I remember "Cold as Ice," "Da Doo Run Run," and "You make me feel like dancing" being on the jukebox in 1977.
Thank you Dave Anthony for The Dollop!
and Garethey of course :)
Actually a lot of this after the bomb, when they collapsed the building. Bomb was put in the Personnel Office . Lots of bad memories come rushing back watching this video, but thanks anyway George.
I partied there quite a bit back then. Saw the damage. Great publicity in the end.

Yes this was scary i worked at the Carriage House Restarurant as a hostess i was told by my boss their was a Bomb found on one of the floors that all employees had to continue to work that day i started to cry i was only 22 yrs old and a 1 yr little girl and a 5 yr old little girl at the baby sitters house..I wanted to leave !! But i was told if we left we would be fired and not be able to work again at Harveys I was devestated..I prayed for us all to be protected and for my babies.thank you Father in Heaven for protecting us in Jesus Christ our Mighty Lord..Amen. I got a job across the street bcz Harveys closed for a long time.we shouldve been compensated for our time at work under such angush we suffered bcz we needed our Jobs..I was a single Mother.
Scary stuff.
Wonder who set up gambling for 9/11 and who won the jackpot.
Insane!
OMG the Bomb Maker was a Master, the good side of this case its that the experience for the FBI bomb defusers to know that intricate and hellish mechanism of destruction. So bad that the Maseter Bomber used their genius in that temporal mechanism... and not for good like a water pump or something...
It is a shame, he was a very smart man indeed. I guess his past trauma just turned him sour.
Good video
A 1000 lbs of dynamite should have totally destroyed that building.
Present from Santa Claus !!!! 😂🤣😁
And of course there was a betting pool if/and when the bomb went of :)
The Futility Closet podcast has a pretty good episode about this. Apparently the guys instructions for the money drop were too confusing, it was never going to work.
A total waste of talent. Imagine if he had used it in a positive and productive way.
DAMN
This can also work at Naga Casino in Cambodia.
The area hasn't changed much. Other than repaints for Harrah's and Harvey's, the closure of Bill's, Montbleu, and Tahoe Amusement Park, and the expansion of Heavenly, the area still looks the same to me after all these years, since taking trips there since 1997.
Montbleu is still open.
Ohh really??!!
Holy shit that's crazy.
If this happened today there would be so many lawsuits.
Yep, INS/CBP is responsible since they have a green card to a convicted felon war criminal from the Soviet Union who went on to commit this felony in the US. What a surprise!
the Horizon was known back then as Sahara Tahoe Casino.
What is the Horizon? There are only four major casinos in Stateline: Harrah's, Harveys, Mont Bleu, and Hard Rock.
That had to be the dumbest plan to try to disable the bomb
They basically had no other option.
I take it you didn't watch the whole video... Just to help you out, they explain that the casino took bets on when, or if, the bomb was going to go off. The people cheering were clearly the people who bet that it would. This was encouraged by the owners. Now can you believe people cheered?
Figures... ANYTHING for entertainment value
also people cheered because a building just exploded and humans like explosions (well when the said explosions are harmless to them)
This comment isn't going to matter much and I know it isn't going to help anybody. But I'm fussy about clear communication, so...
At 3:24, the agent recalling the attempt to defuse the bomb explains their decision to use a shaped charge to sever the control system from the explosives in a bid to hopefully interrupt detonation.
But he explains it in a slightly peculiar way (read and follow the transcript)...When I first heard what he was saying -- "...when the attempt was made to render it safe, it exploded as intended..." -- I was watching the video's inserted live coverage of the event and was surprised to see a huge explosion. I had instead thought that their tactic would work, mostly based on how calmly and evenly the expert explained the situation but also because of the way he then so abruptly shifted to the resulting explosion. He ran a few key words very closely together in a single sentence: "detonated as designed", "render it safe", and "as intended." Now, as the listener, I know I bear some responsibility here to pay attention, not instantly jump to mistaken conclusions, and use some part of my brain to listen, and, if need be, figure out what he means.
But the reality is we don't always pay attention, and we do sometimes jump to wrong conclusions. So we should try to be careful about what and how we communicate some stuff.
I admit this isn't a big deal here, and I don't want to be a nitpicker. The guy is a bomb disposal expert and LEO (BTW, thanks). I don't know why I couldn't let it go...I figure it's fair to say I'll try a little harder to listen better and just hope some of you can try a little harder to speak a little more clearly. I mean, if you actually want me to get what you're saying.

I wondered though if the same people who bombed this building had anything to do with OKC?
Couldn't they put some concrete around it, tie it up with some stuff to minimise damage ?
all that would realistically do is add more shrapnel. when it comes to explosives you've got 2 common options. evacuate and detonate or disable and dismantle.
The worst way to dispose of a large bomb is by encasing it in more heavy materials.
The best way to dispose of a large bomb is in an open field, where the blast can disperse unimpeded in all directions, without anything in the way to contain and magnify it.
Concrete would not work. You need obsidian or bedrock.

weren't all those casinos mob run anyways?
Bim Em Noticed this comment is 7 years old. How, and why, has your life changed since then? Please cite specific examples.
No, they were not mob owned. But yes, they were....😎😎
omg
I mayy have to pick up that book. We locals believed that Harvey Gross made a deal with the bomber because, at the time he couldn't get the permits to expand like he wanted to and permits COULD be acquired for repair and remodel. Whether that is the case or not, the important thing is that no one was hurt, not even the security guard who climbed on it to investigate the extortiuon note which he thought was a letter bomb!
Cool I was there when it happend I was just a little boy
Why are they cheering do they not know how many people died in that blast?
Nobody died, the casino was evacuated the day before
no one died, the bomb was not detonated, and they literally said no one was harmed even. did you listen?
Lmao don't speak if you don't know shit
Suggestion: To disarm bombs, use liquid nitrogen or any liquid as cold as liquid nitrogen to freeze the bombs then dismantle and dispose of them.
short from air condensed
The problem is, there was a water level balloon in the device so if it filled with liquid, it would rise up and complete a circuit, causing a potential explosion
"It exploded as intended"... but didn't work - you forgot to mention that, tool.
Yes it did work as intended. They tried to disarm it and it was made so that if you did not disarm it the right way it would go off. They tried and go it wrong and it went off as it was designed to. It did work,
The only terrorist attack that americans cheered upon.
If only they knew what would happen 21 years after lol.

he did, his brothers were forces to by their father and threatened with death. so they only got 7 years.

*Don't let steel beams melt your American dreams*
Harvey's owner payed for bombs to be planted so John Birges could build another part of Harvey's cuz ya know how Harvey's now has another part of it with a roof on top. The hotel next to Harvey's ( The Horizon. Now known as The Hard Rock) boarded up the windows of the hotel. John Birges wanted to make Harvey's bigger and added another part to Harvey's. My dad was 12 when this happend and he was sitting on top of a rock on Pioneer Trail watching the explosion with his friend. My dad told me all about this demolition to add another part to Harvey's.
"paid".
jet fuel can't melt steel beams
do u feel it now Mr Krabs?
No, but it can weaken steel beams enough that they'll loose their ability to support a load.
1. The impact sheared off the fire retardant from the steel.
2. The steel is then exposed to the burning jet fuel
3. It only takes about 1200 degrees Fahrenheit to weaken the steel's tensile and shear strength to half, sufficient for structural failure. Jet fuel burns about 1500 Fahrenheit, so there was plenty of margin for the flames to ruin the structural grid.
Even then, the WTC still collapsed the way it was designed to... Saving countless lives.
