    Just read an article about this in a History magazine.
    The perpetrator John Birges lived quite a life, ran away from Home, joined the Hungarian Air Force, flew for the Luftwaffe, he claims that he spied for the Americans, was sent to a gulag in which he got experience with explosives while working on a railway line, moved to California and opened several gardening stores, became a millionaire, sold his business and promptly gambled away his fortune.
    The guy was exceptional, still you have to wonder if a bit of humility would have saved him from himself.

    that bomb saved me alot of cash- I ran up 7500 in markers -iou's to a casino aint no joke. i was on my way out of town, just pulled out of the parking lot.- worried i might not get far, when the place blew up. the markers were the cashiers cage which was destroyed. i got the hook for the 7500- and never heard from harvey's- and never went back to tahoe. one time in reno the pit boss recognized me and i ducked out. I don't condone violence,but I was in a bad spot and things just blew my way.

  • @marklipson
    @marklipson 2 года назад

    This comment isn't going to matter much and I know it isn't going to help anybody. But I'm fussy about clear communication, so...
    At 3:24, the agent recalling the attempt to defuse the bomb explains their decision to use a shaped charge to sever the control system from the explosives in a bid to hopefully interrupt detonation.
    But he explains it in a slightly peculiar way (read and follow the transcript)...When I first heard what he was saying -- "...when the attempt was made to render it safe, it exploded as intended..." -- I was watching the video's inserted live coverage of the event and was surprised to see a huge explosion. I had instead thought that their tactic would work, mostly based on how calmly and evenly the expert explained the situation but also because of the way he then so abruptly shifted to the resulting explosion. He ran a few key words very closely together in a single sentence: "detonated as designed", "render it safe", and "as intended." Now, as the listener, I know I bear some responsibility here to pay attention, not instantly jump to mistaken conclusions, and use some part of my brain to listen, and, if need be, figure out what he means.
    But the reality is we don't always pay attention, and we do sometimes jump to wrong conclusions. So we should try to be careful about what and how we communicate some stuff.
    I admit this isn't a big deal here, and I don't want to be a nitpicker. The guy is a bomb disposal expert and LEO (BTW, thanks). I don't know why I couldn't let it go...I figure it's fair to say I'll try a little harder to listen better and just hope some of you can try a little harder to speak a little more clearly. I mean, if you actually want me to get what you're saying.

      The worst way to dispose of a large bomb is by encasing it in more heavy materials.

    Harvey's owner payed for bombs to be planted so John Birges could build another part of Harvey's cuz ya know how Harvey's now has another part of it with a roof on top. The hotel next to Harvey's ( The Horizon. Now known as The Hard Rock) boarded up the windows of the hotel. John Birges wanted to make Harvey's bigger and added another part to Harvey's. My dad was 12 when this happend and he was sitting on top of a rock on Pioneer Trail watching the explosion with his friend. My dad told me all about this demolition to add another part to Harvey's.

      No, but it can weaken steel beams enough that they'll loose their ability to support a load.

      1. The impact sheared off the fire retardant from the steel.
      2. The steel is then exposed to the burning jet fuel
      3. It only takes about 1200 degrees Fahrenheit to weaken the steel's tensile and shear strength to half, sufficient for structural failure. Jet fuel burns about 1500 Fahrenheit, so there was plenty of margin for the flames to ruin the structural grid.
      Even then, the WTC still collapsed the way it was designed to... Saving countless lives.
