One interesting fun fact. Matt Mercer the DM of the group stated that if anyone else but Grog got the killing blow on Kevdak, the herd would not stop and would kill them.

When Laura (Vex) put Grog into the pendant in the original stream it took awhile for Matt Mercer to realise what she was doing, when he finally did his reaction was priceless. One of those moments that sticks with you.

The dedication to translating this fight so well and accurately into animation is a testament to the team
bringing us this show. So many great details referenced as they occurred. They even showed the exact
description Travis gave for how the final blow finished Kevdak.
In the song that Scanlan/Sam Riegel sings, Travis provided the vocals for the "RAGE!" in the background lol
When Matt did the reveal for Kaylie, the rest of the group saw where it was going, but Sam Riegel didn't...
so there was this hilarious period of him trying to figure out what was going on. lol

  • @Blazieth

One of the best "How do you want to do this?" moments in all of Critical Role. As for Scanlan and Kaylie... yeah, that is probably the single most important reveal in the entire campaign for Scanlan. That was not planned by Sam Riegel, Mercer just dropped that on him. And holy shit, did Sam take that reveal and RUN FOR THE HILLS with it in terms of Scanlan's characterization.

The challenge, the call to VM, the pokeball tactic and final blow, straight from the stream. Kaylie's reveal - without the nudity or bondage - also from the stream, though (I think) it happened the night before the conclave attacked Emon. Even the cows happened... Scanlan's plan, of course. But this fight was one of the most anticipated of the entire campaign. Liam and Travis even got Wil Wheaton, frequent roller of natural ones, to shake Matt's hand before the stream that night, hoping the dice curse would be passed on.
Wil was a guest on Critical Role before, playing a member of The Slayer's Take when VM were being tested for membership. Matt had heard of Wil's reputation, but then he saw it with his own eyes... there's a video, The Wil Wheaton Dice Curse. See it for yourself. It's spoiler-free.

5:33 Verbatim from gameplay! this whole fight is very much blow for blow the same as what happened while they were playing the game around the table. one of the moments voted as the best by the fans.
10:53 At Dawn we plan is one of the most winged phrases from the game, up there with "Bidet" and specifically one that we have not gotten to yet.
12:02 Also straight from the source material. the event happened earier in the game, but fits really well here. Scanlan is old enough to have a child, he's 69. yeah, I know. it was intentional from the player. Sam Reigel did not however know about Kaylee beforehand, that was something the game master sprung on him like this!
13:20 So that was something straight out from the gameplay, Vexs player Laura Bailey came up with that plan on the spot.

Considering how extensive the Chroma Conclave arc was on stream, there was no way they'd get through it in just one season. But the split they chose was the one I expected beforehand. The scene they end this season on was pretty much in the middle of it, and one of the most pivotal moments in the entire arc. While next season will deal with the same problem, it will be quite a different narrative...

To be fair, Scanlan has no idea Pike is interested. She's play-flirted with him before but any sign of serious interest has been when he's not looking and she's rejected his more serious advances. So when anouther gnome woman comes along that he seems to hit it off with and has a lot in common with it's not so surprising he goes for it.

  • @RomnilWater

And so starts the epic conclusion to Season 2. While this was Grog's fight I love that this fight really shows off how well Vox Machina works together. All of them are constantly covering each other's back and Vex's "Show them who you are!" moment is really the stand out of the season for me.
As for Scanlan and Kaylie reveal at the end, that's basically how it happened in Campaign. Sam had no idea about this twist and Matt just went for the jugular. As for how many kids Scanlan has. Who knows? And it's a joke that any character that is rolled in a D&D game set in Excendria needs to roll for "child of Scanlan Shorthalt".
This is now the official start of Scanlan's character arc that will have some crazy moments later on. I honestly can't wait

There are some differences in the fight between the stream and the animation, but both are really cool and some of the best fights in both their respective medium.
The stream was more of a brutal slog, because Kevdak as a totem barbarian took half damage from everything except psychic damage (which Vox Machina didn't have access to) and had a healer on his side. Everyone was getting low on both hitpoints and spells when Vex made the Trinket trinket move and Grog got a critical hit on Kevdak.
Grog was not weakened as he was in the animation, but I think resolving the break with Craven Edge that way in the animation made for a story better suited to the medium, and both are really good.
Some things are exactly the same though. Grog did get impaled by Kevdak, he did use the ionic "Vox Machina *FUCK. SHIT. UP!* " line, and it ended the same way too.
An interesting little visual detail; when Grog speaks to Earthbreaker Groon the angle is lowered or tilted. Grog is looking up at him, feeling powerless and weak. But when Groon speaks to him the angle is straight forward, an equal facing an equal. Groon knows Grog's potential, and both demand and encourage him to become his equal in that moment. To finally find his strength. And he does.
Also, this fight in particular, really shows how much of a team Vox Machina has become. The contrast with the fight against Brimschythe in S1ep2 is pretty stark, and even against the Briarwood they fought well but mostly as individuals and pairs. Here it's much more combinations and watching each other's back (although to be fair, they have lots more targets).
Props to the herd member who took three point blank shots from Percy and still kept coming. Took him blowing her brains out, quite literally, to stop her.
Also, yes, Scanlan probably has several more kids here and there around Exandria. Kaylee is just the only one who was motivated enough to track him down and get revenge on him for ditching her mother.

As soon as I saw mention of Kevdak in last episode's reaction, I binged this show, because that was probably my favorite moment across all of Critical Role, second only to Campaign 1's ending (Buckle up, because if they show it in this show, it'll be a doozy)
Goliaths (Grog and Kevdak's race) are my personal favorite race in D&D, so I loved seeing these two go at it.
And the perfect implementation of Travis' iconic line: "I would like to Rage"
Addendum: That "Vox Machina... FUCK! SHIT! UP!" was Grog's signal for the rest of the party to aid him in the fight during the campaign.
