  • In this video ‪@OutdoorJack‬ stops by the shop to talk about the brand new Ruger made Marlin 1895 Trapper 45-70. This lever action gun is a little different than the 1895 SBL. The biggest differences is the Skinner Sights, and that the barrel has been shortened by 2 inches. Thomas is a big fan of this model and can't wait for the next one.

Awesome! I love what Ruger has done with Marlin so far. I grew up with Marlin has a kid with a 39 golden A and then later a 336 30 30 and I feel like Ruger has brought the quality back to Marlin. Every review I've seen today is extremely positive that Ruger is doing it right for Marlin. Thank you 👍

I just took my new Trapper out of the box yesterday and was quite impressed. The metal to wood and metal to metal fit is darn near perfect. The laser etched checkering looks and feels great. The smoothness of the action is as good as anything Marlin originally made. I love the way they smoothed out the lever and loading gate so there are no sharp edges.

Die hard 45-70 fans will tell you how it's just as good as an elephant gun. Then you go out to their range, they knock a steel plate around with it to showcase how powerful it is, putting some decent spalling onto the plate. Then you drill it once and your round goes right through.
45-70 is a decent caliber, don't get me wrong, but it's almost reminiscent of people thinking a 12 gauge round will literally lift someone off their feet and launch them across the room

I like the changes/upgrades Ruger has made with this rifle. I own the Miroku Browning 1886 .45-70, and 1892 .44 Mag lever action rifles and think they are the finest lever guns ever made. I am a huge fan of Ruger and own numerous rifles/handguns from Ruger. I would like to see a TRUE All-Weather Guide Gun in this series!
My changes would be very simple:
    1. All- Weather should include a Full Synthetic Stock. I would love for Hogue to offer one of their Over-Molded Stocks with the same dimensions as the Factory Laminate.
    2. Return to Buckhorn/Semi-Buckhorn Sights. They could be steel, fiber optic, Tritium, or a Fiber Optic/Tritium combo (preferred) for low-light and no-light conditions. I shot competitively with peep sights at paper. I prefer the open buckhorn sights for speed and field of view over peeps.
    3. Smaller Lever. I know the craze is for a big loop, but I have hunted all over Texas and the Rocky Mountains with my lever guns and have always worn gloves (L/XL), and have never had any issues with fitting my large gloved hands in the lever. There is a better feel and it produces a better action with less slop on follow-up shots.
If aftermarket suppliers made these products there would be no need for Ruger too. I know a smaller lever is available. I have not had much luck in finding a full synthetic stock replacement other than the skeletonized aluminum ones. No luck in finding buckhorn/semi buckhorn sights either.

I like the old west blued guns, I have a couple of those, but with this particular firearm, I like it the way they made it. Stainless , laminate, big lever loop! I bought one today and I'm anxious to shoot it. While I am a traditionalist, I think if the people had the choice of this gun and what they had back then, they would opt for this new marlin trapper. I'm sure they were locking for every edge they could get in those days. This gun strikes a balance of old and new very well. I will never let my traditional old west guns go, but I won't let this one get away either.

Can you add a picatinny rail to the trapper though? I know an optic on a levergun looks so wrong, but a hunting rifle is no good if you can only aim it during the daylight hours.
