  • In this episode, SV Cadence takes us across the final stretch of the Gulf of Mexico from Apalachicola FL to Clearwater, Florida in a soothing overnight offshore sail. But we don't get to squeeze into port easily - there's an thunderstorm awaiting and we share a simple storm strategy. In port, we seek out a Clearwater Cantina at the Clearwater Marina, and do a few chores to prepare for the next leg of the journey.
    Hope you enjoy!
    Cheers,
    Matt

    Who Are We?
We're the Fosters, and we just sold our house and purchased a sailboat, Cadence, a Catalina 387. We're on a journey to minimize our life, learn to live on a sailboat, and sail away.
In 2019, Matt quit his public education career of 15 years, and went full-time building his own business. Olivia is ready to explore the world, and so am I...but first, we have to save up, learn about sailing, and figure out a way to leave land.
We're sharing this journey with you in hopes that it'll bring you a smile, provide something helpful, and maybe give a bit of inspiration to live life on your terms - to explore your world.
Join us as we take this journey into the unknown, and share some laughs along the way.

Ref: laundry... For doing a small amount at a time, try using a 5 gal bucket with detergent and placing it in the anchor locker or attaching it to the lifelines while under way. The boats motion will agitate the laundry and you will have (mostly) clean clothes in an hour or two. Rinse and dry. If at anchor, soak overnight for a similar result. The fresh water issue will still be an issue!

Had I thought about it I would have suggested you stop at the Bait Shop. It’s at the back of the marina and the food is awesome, the atmosphere is quiet. It’s small and mostly locals and fresh catches of the day. The locals are very friendly in Clearwater also..

We went by the bait house for dinner, but they closed early 🤷‍♂️ the food smelled amazing!

You guys were in my hood! I’m not sure if you cruised down the ICW from Clearwater but if you did you sailed past my house.

After a sail like this a few relaxing days in port are a welcome respite and allows you to (almost) forget about the rough ride. Even with the boat chores. Our sailing days are behind us. Thanks for the vicarious experience once again.

So true, so true. It seems to always be worth it! Thanks for sailing vicariously with us 🙌🙌

Nice video. Thanks for posting. I know these take a lot of work. Some thoughts. Video of storms and waves always look less impressive than reality/experience.
Our cruising wardrobe consists of no cotton shorts, T-shirts, etc., because of the additional time it takes to dry them. You will be feeding the dryer coins excessively. And when no laundromat, put the clothes in a bucket or Rubbermaid tub, a little bit of soap, a fresh rinse, and hang them on the lifelines. Nylon dries really fast - like the Columbia stuff.
The oil pump. I have that same one and it works wonderfully. It's a West Marine brand, so you can check it out at your next stop. You need to make sure all of the hose fittings together are airtight. That unit works by pumping a vacuum in the tank, and it automatically pulls the fluid in. Helps if the fluid is a little warm, which means less viscous.
Didn't know all of that was near the marina, especially the cantina. We came in late at night, and caught a taxi to Tarpon Springs the next am to do the Greek experience (food, sponging, etc.). Left the next day. Fuel was cheaper at a depot across the channel and on the other side of the bridge from the marina. Its a nice stop though, especially since there really isn't anything between Apalachicola and Clearwater. IMO
    Keep them coming!

Thanks for the tips! We're learning how to do the bucket wash, and didn't think about sticking to the fast drying clothes 👍 And for the oil change ... We grabbed a new vacuum pump at our next stop. It was super easy to use!

You made it to Clearwater! Yay! Not far from where we live - we're about 45 minutes south of there. Clearwater is really busy. Where we live it's much quieter. :)

I really appreciate you sharing your adventure. I hope to be you someday and untie the lines. Curious, why can’t you heave to in that boat?

Thanks! I'm rooting for you to untie the lines too!
The boat heaves to pretty good...It just hasn't been my go-to strategy, yet.

Love y’all and this journey you’re sharing with us. As a filmmaker, can I just give one piece of advice that will help…something I learned the hard way myself: “Nothing kills good video more than bad audio.” You will notice a difference in views and how long people view, I promise. Maybe more voiceover and add some of those new DJI lav mics or something like that. You won’t regret the results of improving the audio. Devils in the details. Y’all are awesome and that’s a fact!!😎❤️🙏🏼

Ahh, Audio in windy locations has been the bane of our productions! We've since upgraded the camera mics, pay more attention to wind angle to the mic, use low cuts...but in the last month discovered some new post editing techniques too. Those DJI mics are definitely on our list to buy this summer! 🤙 Thanks for bringing this up, and hopefully, you hear clearer and more pristine audio in the later episodes! Thanks 🙏 for watching and joining the conversation! 👍
