This is how I've been varnishing my paintings for ages. I use a cake slice like Julie does except on the smaller pieces where I spread it about with a flat silicon beauty blender. I wait until I have 3-4-5 paintings to varnish and use a fair amount of varnish on the first and the excess that pours off go onto the next piece to be varnished and so on until they are all done. Saves a lot of product from being wasted. I detest seeing anything getting wasted lol it's like money down the drain.
I so relate! I've always got a blank canvas under a pour to colour any paint. One of my best paintings came from 'the drippings'! If it doesn't work, it can serve as a base paint.
@@evokevisualart9128 ha! two of my favourites are 'unofficial paintings'. One of a smoosh (a 'dip') into runoff paint thats all red and gold with hints of pink and green, reminds me of a summer garden, and the other was a blank canvas I tilted paint onto, lots of white and many shades of blue with a bit of purple and red and that looks like a big old ship with sails and all on a rough sea.
You are the first one to show the tilting when you varnish! Everyone else just shows spreading out the varnish and taking out bubbles and anything in the varnish. I wondered why I kept getting waves in my finish. Thank you for this video!!
This is a great video. Using pouring medium as a gloss varnish is a great option for people who have sensitivities to epoxy resin. I have used both, but each has their own pros and cons. I still use both.

I use Liquetex for mine. They dont need 3 coats. Its likely better though. Its thicker than the house brand at my art supply shop downtown, Wallacks Art Shop. Amazing glass like finish but i have SO much more Liquetex! Good to show people the best way.
I've been brushing the varnish on and the results are OK but I can see the way you do it is much better. I really appreciate your sharing your technique. It's a great help. Thank you.
Delighted you did a video on this, thank you. I’ve been using resin for a while now and the pouring medium looks like it may be a whole lot easier to use. Was about to head to bed but I’m going to give this a go first 😊
Pouring medium is also much safer. I used resin for about three months and then developed severe rash and burning sensations on my arms and chest and face. It was extremely painful. Seems the toxicity builds up and you can become allergic to resin.
Take the stickiness of the pouring medium and increase it about five times and you have resin. Lol. And it gets everywhere, no matter how careful you are. I'll use it when I have a bunch of small items like coasters, but I'll stick with my varnish for my paintings. Your bloom and varnish job is gorgeous! Love the shininess!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. This video sure is helpful, I will give this a try for sure as I am having such a hard time with getting the resin to work proper for me ...Thank you
Pouring medium is designed to go on thickly, it will naturally drip off to find its level and it really shouldn't crack, but you need to make sure your table is level. I use Liquitex high gloss varnish. I pour a lot on, move it around with a very soft synthetic wide brush so all areas are covered, then brush quickly, but lightly going one way, brushing the excess varnish off, and then brushing the other way, brush the sides and catch any drips and that's it. Use torch to burst any bubbles then leave overnight. Repeat another 2-3 times depending how glossy you want it. It comes up like glass. It's so much easier and quicker to use than pouring medium. If you use painters tape underneath then any drips will just be removed when you remove the tape at the end.
I left too much varnish on a painting one time, I wanted to finish it as a gift, and it cracked everywhere, it was surface cracks, not necessarily in the paint. My only option was to try to save it by doing a resin coat on top. It actually worked made all the cracks disappear, I think it was a lucky save!
Did you do a new acrylic pour or did you resin the same painting? Mine cracked everywhere and wondered if it can be saved. What did the crackled look like? Completely disappeared?
I have fallen in love with DecoArt Clear Pouring Topcoat. The instructions are to pour it like you do an acrylic pour but I found you use way too much when you're pouring it straight off. I use my big spreader knife as well and it's fantastic. Once it dries it's like glass.
I’m in varnishing hell at the moment trying to use Crystalac Brite Tone with a soft brush & also foam pad still getting brush strokes after 6 thin coats on my canvases. The ceramic coasters are not as bad. I am surprised you are using something similar to Liquitex PM as the “varnish” instead of actual varnish! I think I’ll try it on one of my small pieces! Any other suggestions are welcomed & thank you for posting this important video for all of us beginner varnishers!
Does your PM dry hard enough? I have always been told NOT to use PM as a varnish. Varnish dries much harder and gives more protection. You could spray over it now with an archival spray varnish with UV protectant. Looks Beautiful!
Thank you so much, Julie! I tried varnishing 2 of my canvases but wasn't happy with the results, but I used a paint hrush and didn't know about tilting off the excess. I decided to just leave my paint pourings alone after that. BUT, now that I've watched you do, I'll give it a go again!!! I so appreciate your teachings in all the videos you do. 🤗🤗🤗 The finished piece is beautiful!
@@susanweidman4389 I believe it is the DecoArt brand. It is found near the MasterTouch brand paints. It seems to work fine. I suggest really tilting the canvas and getting off as much as possible before letting sit at the 45 degree angle for the night.
@@susanweidman4389 I spread the gloss all over. Then tilt it (almost at a 90degree angle) to let it run off. Once it is spread all over evenly, then I prop it up using 4 cups. 2 big and 2 shorter ones. This way the gloss runs off the canvas all together, equally, and does not stick to the cup or canvas. I love the colours in this painting. Now I have to find where you did this one. What kind of pouring medium is this? Do you use it in your paints too? 🌷
@@PhishedOff, no but I found out it is pouring medium and not a gloss varnish. Cheaper that resin and safer but not that cheap. I use a gloss varnish on the one’s I don’t want to resin. I give my paintings away so I cannot afford to add too much more expense. I will have to start selling to pay for what I use.
That looks absolutely gorgeous. I wish I was in Australia because I'd buy it! I love the way it really brought the colours out. I've not started pouring yet but have asked to join your facebook group.
OMG, this painting is amazing. When you say you used pouring medium to varnish it, what is in the pouring medium? Also, I have the material to do an isolation coat. Do you need this when you use a pouring medium to varnish. Thanks for the excellent instructions.
Pouring medium is not actually a varnish. It gives a lovely look but doesn’t dry hard and cannot be removed like varnish can be down the road if the painting needs to be cleaned.
I’ve used varnish, varnish and pouring medium, and resin. On anything but a small canvas - 30cm x 30cm - I find using resin is an overkill. I don’t think we need to use such an expensive treatment when coats do varnish can give a gorgeous shine without te expense r the waste. . I don’t like wasting varnish/pouring medium so I have a coaster to be done and the overflow is used on the coaster instead of being poured off.
Beautiful, but I thought that it needs to be glossy? Does the pouring medium dry glossy. I didn’t know you could use it as a sealer. That’s good news. Thank you Julie ❤️
