She has such wonderful discernment and control of all the articulations and nuances of these pieces. She was truly an astounding pianist. Underrated, I believe.

Fuori stile? Studiate signori, studiate! Il Debussy degli Studi non è quello delle Images ... Qui emerge in maniera superlativa la finezza, la modernita', l' asciutta ironia del Debussy maturo, con una realizzazione tecnica da far invidia....
It astonishes me how little she seems to identify with the composer's style, it's seemingly through the Messiaen prism that she reads him, with sharp, tense rhythms and hard, bright round. Total opposite of Copeland, Debussy's pupil, with his exquisite readings.
To the best of my knowledge Copeland recorded some preludes and other miniatures from Debussy's middle period, but not the etudes, which are written in a different style. The rhythms are indeed sharper and more angular, there's very little of the impressionistic sensuousness of let's say the Images about this music. She does a fine job, maybe just a touch too brusque but never less than interesting. The best recording of this incredibly difficult cycle must be the Soviet master Vedernikov though
@Senza Rigore yeah he made some truly wonderful recordings, including an enchanting piano version of Prélude à l'aprés-midi d'un faune. Of course, his is not the only valid manner to play Debussy on the piano, there are others too.
Maybe we hear Messiaen through the Loriod prism! I think these performances have a wonderful humanity to them, like everything Loriod played. Her playing was always so alive.
Quelles exquises merveilles!

You should listen to Debussy play his own music. Very eccentric. I think she's wonderful.
I find this performance rather heavy handed.
