Failure of mainstream political class and system paves way for the fringe and extreme elements to fill in the vacuum. The same thing happened with Germany and Italy as well. The ruling establishment didn't perform well on the governance fronts like economy, inflation and fail to address concerns of the electorate. Most of them were undemocratic, illegitimate and monarchy making it a more visible and easy target of public angst. Those on the far-right and extreme ideologies took advantage of the poor economic environment, lacklustre government and poor elite to rise to power. But ironically they also didn't come through legitimate means like polls or refrendum. Most of them came through political deals and street power. At the end it was the masses that suffered.
