The temperature readings given by weather stations is from within a Stevenson Screen - that is, a white, weather station box... you've probably seen them in junior science books and on television, etc.
That indoor/outdoor Acurite thermometer (in the video) is in a plastic case giving a bit of a greenhouse effect, especially if left in the sunlight. To get a more accurate reading, it should be hung somewhere in the shade with exposure to ambient air currents (not your campfire or air conditioner exhaust, etc). A faster reading will be obtained if it is removed from the plastic case, but it will give a more stable reading if left in the case. In any case, definitely out of direct sun or other light, be it in or out of the case.

Do not rely on your phone for temperature. I’ve seen 36 degree readings and I created a puddle about 3 inches in diameter, and it froze in about 30 minutes, indicating it was definitely below 32°F since freezing point does not change more than a few thousandths of a degree with elevation difference. Since a puddle that size froze solid in 30 minutes I’m guessing it was an actual temperature of 28-30°F. The nest way to test for accuracy is seeing if it reads 32°F in a cup of water that has started to freeze. My acurite tube thermometer read 32°F in ice water, proving it accurate, and I’ve seen a 16°F reading while the internet showed my town at 27°F, so that must have been accurate after seeing that thing with the frozen puddle. The 2nd thing to prove it accurate was that it read 76°F while my weather station indoor temperature read the same thing.

@@GearReviewDepot It’s not 16°F anymore, it’s summer and in fact it was 86°F earlier today. Still, thanks for the wishes.

If it's in direct sunlight (which it is) then of course it's going to read a higher temperature, you have to have it in the shade to get it to read a more accurate temperature.

    • @GearReviewDepot

Nope. It was never correct. No matter where or what the current temperature was.

I'm curious if keeping it in contact with your body could affect the sensor? I got a button thermometer that always 30 C even if it's alot less then that--got it from an Aussie and there they use celcius. I have a Coglan's thermometer that has a key ring, here is a link to the one I have www.ebay.com/itm/Coghlans-Zipper-Pull-Thermometer-Temperature-Outdoor-Mini-Portable-Keychain-Camp-/331786389771?hash=item4d4002890b:g:2eAAAOSwPc9WzKVB

Kaylynn Strain It was attached to the side of my pack all day except when I was making this video. I'm sure my hand or body could have raised the temp but that was only during the video.

yeah, that is crazy what that thing did, might want to get a refund or exchange

Acurite simply doesn't work in direct sunlight. Also, the temp and humidity can vary from one sensor to another by up to two degrees and three percent humidity. I brought the outside remote inside and placed it next to the station. I was amazed at the variance. You get what you pay for.

Well, if you find a good one, let us know, I wouldn't mind having something like that. I'm so spoiled from driving my Subaru, because it has a outdoor temperature on the display, my new truck doesn't, so I've been looking for an aftermarket one. I'd rather know the temperature than the time. Thanks for the video Tim

I have the same one and even though ive been looking for something different i think yours is defective. Mine seems to be more accurate

I agree. Even in the shade it was always reading 80's for a temp.

I bought a acu.rite indoor/outdoor Model 02044w1, and both read 10 degrees off. Looking for a way to calabrate it but no luck. Nice unit but if its IN.acurite then its really garbage.

I bought an Acu-rite weather station, with outdoor sensor and it is doing the same thing. It tells me the temps are in the 90s when we're in the 50s. The handbook says it takes 14 days to calibrate, and there can be 5 degrees difference. I'm fine with that, BUT, it's been 3 weeks since I bought the unit. Right now, it reads 91F when in fact it is only 55F. A week or so ago, it read 105F. I'm in Canada, we rarely ever see these temps in the hottest days of summer, let alone in mid-October. I'm very disappointed with it. The sensor is not in the sun, in fact it's well protected in an area that's always shaded. Just thought I'd share. Acu-rite is not at all accurate!

Sounds pretty messed up. Mine was wrong for about a week until I removed the battery, let it sit for an hour and now it seems pretty accurate since. I think maybe removing the battery has fixed the issue. Waiting for some really cold days/hikes and then we'll see what it reads.

Thermometer needs to be kept in the shade with no sunlight on it. That's why the temp reading are probably wrong.

That's why I always hope the old iPhone has cell service where I am cause I rely on that for the weather. Otherwise I just lick the finger and hold it up to the wind sort of thing lol. Thanks Tim!!

Still, you didn't follow directions. It clearly tells you in the instruction NOT to place the thermometer in direct sunlight and direct wind. Putting it against your body and a black jacket didn't help either. Basic physics. Yes, in this case it was a defective product. But if you are into tactical defense you have to know how to use your tools - especially survival tools, like thermometers.

I don't think you'll find anything due to all the variables. Maybe a watch.

    • @GearReviewDepot
      @GearReviewDepot  7 лет назад

I have one but the sensor to find out the temp is too close to my arm and it's not very accurate, I have to take the watch off and wait a minute or two and then it'll read the correct temp. Terrible design.

This is from five years ago they're really inaccurate now. Your phone and weather station is 5 to 10° always hotter than what it really is. I wonder why that is? What could possibly happen to cause that type of phenomenon to be happening? I mean I know that European weather channels have gotten in trouble for bald face lying and even using ground temperature which is always hotter than 6 m above surface temperature which they've always used. What could possibly be happening to cause global news and the temperatures you see on your phone to be off 5 to 10° warmer all the time?hmmm

    • @GearReviewDepot

I’ve tried a handful of these for the outdoors and all of them were inaccurate to some degree or another. I’ve since just started using water my cell phone reads. It also isn’t 100% but I feel it’s better.

"... instead [of] having to pull out and look at my cell phone."
Cell phones are for communication; they're not thermometers. Unless you know where the temperature sensor is that reports the temperature via the cellular network, don't assume it is giving a temperature even remotely close to the temperature where your are.
