    JJ Abrams is good at jumping the shark. They probably will not reveal the purpose of the maze, because he doesn't know the purpose himself. Like how they weren't able to tie all the threads of Lost together ....

      Honestly I just came into the westworld Fandom because of naked James Marsden. But I've noticed even if the storyline tanks the acting is pretty damn good.

    I think it's important that Lawrence tells MiB that he should go home and MiB tells Lawrence that he's never going back. So this leads me to believe he plans on dying in the park, or perhaps he wants his consciousness uploaded.
    As for the maze, I think it was Arnold's test for sentience. Ford tells Bernard that the hosts passed the Turing Test after just the first year, so it stands to reason that they would need a new test, something quite elaborate to test for true sentience.

    Skillfully and thoughtfully presented. A distinct pleasure to watch because, unlike other videos aiming to explain or interpret the many symbols and subtleties of Westworld, HaxDogma achieves the right confluence between conjecture and constraint. The result is a credible authoritative narrative that cuts to the essence of the story as we presently understand it and holds course without straying down every rabbit hole. Please keep up the excellent work.

    • @wanderingbufoon
      @wanderingbufoon 8 лет назад +4

      kind of hard. I mean they are robots and it has been known that we could use plant to power up machines. Orange has citric acid which is a viable source for energy and can be used as batteries. You could say that it is their lifeforce. Also oranges to us humans give vitamin C. Vitamin C is a cure for scurvy which is what makes us paranoid. We see that Dolores is experiencing some paranoid episodes in episode 5. We were also shown that she was unraveling. Perhaps she is running out of orange.
      This is too much.

      wanderingbufoon the entrance of the maze is dolores. dolores translates into pain (spanish). pain might be the entrance into consciousness. love is the biggest contributor to pain. maybe dolores has the key in her head, maybe they will upload some of dolores memories or info into all of the hosts so they are more conscious and end the park.

    • @wanderingbufoon
      @wanderingbufoon 8 лет назад +1

      we were given a clue about Arnold through the story of the maze, which seems like someone added that detail in secret, we know that "Arnold" has been busy "updating" hosts lately.
      But that is a very good find. I had always wondered about whether her name has any correlation. Seems insignificant still as they told us the structure of consciousness. Although that missing piece at the top could very much be pain.

    The Maze is the church where Dolores killed Arnold, and gained consciousness 30 years ago. After that Ford had to clean the mess up. He created Teddy to keep Dolores in check. Teddy who is designed after Will. The man Dolores falls for. Will is the Man in Black. And Bernard designed after Arnold. And there will be a new uprising from Maeve, and the Man in Black 's gonna find the maze where he could ask Dolores, the one he once fell in love to kill him. And the deeper meaning in westworld he's looking for is Love (or death). And the Reason Ford keeps Dolores around is because she's the only one with consciousness. And that's too precious to destroy.

    Pretty sure that Any time we see Bernard and Dolores together is the past and it's actually Arnold with Dolores. I think Bernard is a Host version of Arnold, made by Ford to still have Arnold's genius around but controllable.

    The maze must be where you can transfer your mortal brain to a host and achieve immortality, of course one of the host will be set free in the process, so arnold lives maybe inside dolores, and mib must be interested in finding a way to defy death

    Ford's point: "in this place,the last thing you want the hosts to be is conscious" can be read in two ways: 1) in the order of wants, 2) temporally. 1) Out of all the things that you want the hosts to be, within the park, the last on that list is conscious. 2) Over the timeline of the host's existence, they are some thing first and they are some thing second, etc. and then they are some thing last, and the last thing they could be, that you want, is conscious. Ah language. Beauty in the ambiguity.

    So after re-watching a couple of episodes with the knowledge of the plot so far, you see everything from a different perspective and I’ve realized many things I didn’t notice before. This has made me change my point of view on many aspects and now I have some interesting theories and ideas I’d like to share with you:
    1.Multiple timelines, or eras as I prefer to call them. This is a well known theory among fans and I totally agree with it. There’s a storyline taking place with William, Logan and Dolores 30 years ago, on which there’s no Teddy, no Maeve (surely she’s in a different storyline with her daughter or she hasn’t been created yet and no MIB (Man in Black). So far there’s no evidence to unprove this theory
    I think Dolores, thanks to the voices in her head (Arnold) is remembering what happened 30 years ago with William in the quest to find self-consciousness (the maze) and simultaneously is retracing her steps in her current era (or present timeline) to find it again. So the show is mixing up these two different eras makes us think it’s a single one. This explains why Dolores sometimes is alone and then people appear or disappear (The little girl by the well, William and Lawrence at the Wagon, and many more, the revolver on her drawer, and many more…) and also why she sometimes sees herself
    2.Arnold/Bernard. I do believe that Bernard is a host with the consciousness of Arnold and that the Bernard we see in some sessions with Dolores is actually Arnold working on her to make her achieve self-consciousness. The Bernard we see in the present is just a host (created by Dr. Ford) with part of Arnold’s consciousness, but he’s not yet aware of that. I’ve no evidence to prove this point. It’s just a thought…
    3. MIB is NOT William. I believe Logan is the MIB, if you re-watch a couple of episodes you’ll realise that they have the same behaviour and way of thinking.
    Think... MIB is rich and owns a big company, just like Logan.
    So why this much hate between the MIB and Dolores? Simply because William fell in love with Dolores and left his sister, plus he feels betrayed by both William and Dolores. And this leads us to the next point
    4.Is William alive in the present? Well…sort of. I think that William (with the help of Arnold or through the maze) is inside Teddy’s consciousness, so…. Teddy = William…and this gives the love story between Dolores and William even more relevance and epicness! If this turns out to be true all the lines Dolores and Teddy share make much more sense…”you came back! I told you I would…or…My path leads me to you”. Noticed on how Teddy and William share some personality? Like on how Teddy and William reject the company of prostitutes because they rather bed someone they love? There are many other aspects that gave away this theory so…so far I’m pretty sure that it will be a fact
    I’m sure that many of you won’t agree with this points, but, I someone proves me wrong with actual hard evidence I’ll be thankful
    Cheers and thanks HBO for this amazing show!

    • @genisvendrell6223
      @genisvendrell6223 8 лет назад

      Very nice. Since William, Logan and MiB are human, there must be a high degree of coincidence in their personalities if two of them are the same person 30 years apart. MiB agrees perfectly with Logan in this regard and I don't know why anybody hasn't mentioned it. The fact that he is rich is very important, because William is not (his job position and money depends on Logan and a marital agreement that he is about to throw out of the window). The show is implying at this moment that you should care very much to what happens to William and that Logan is despicable and not important anymore, but this could change very rapidly.
      But this gets us to another question. If Williams is so important in this story and he is living in a past timeline, who is he in the present? If the answer to this question is not satisfactory, the show could fail to meet its expectations. He could be dead after his adventure with Dolores... Or not completely dead, if his consciousness still survives somehow... And it's in Teddy where I find more potential for "epicness", in a sweet way, on a series that could use some sweetness and real romance if it is to appeal to wide audiences.
      So very very nice for pointing this out. I don't know if this theory of yours is correct but it makes perfect sense to me.

    • @mishasworld1765
      @mishasworld1765 8 лет назад

      I like your Logan=MIB idea, but I have a problem with the eye color. In addition, recently Logan receives a nice cut to the face. MIB has no scar. It would be a cheeky thing to have Logan as the MIB, it would explain his wanting to have Dolores raped, hurt, etc. But, I'm not convinced and think there are more clues that Will=MIB, especially with 2 newer clues we were given: The most recent being the photo Logan had of his sister. He stuffed the photo in Will's coat. In the future Abernathy finds the photo on his property buried in the dirt. The second, the MIB recognizes the woman who stabs Teddy in the chest (Ep 8 or 9). MIB says to her something to the effect of "It's you. I thought they retired you." This is the same woman who Will meets when he first gets off the train in the sterile looking "real world" with Logan. Logan goes off with a hot man and woman, leaving Will with the lean, blonde woman as they go off to select his costume. So, although I'm leaning toward Will being the MIB, I can't argue that it would be a good twist if he was not. At any rate, this is such a fun, visceral and cerebral show. I think I will be sad when it ends.

    Fun theory: Bernard is really a host that has already traversed the maze and awarded his "freedom". He's free from his loop, but not Ford's control. Bernard's conversations with his wife could be a construct or staged to help him reconcile memories from his original loop.
    Kind of a stretch, but I got the idea after noticing Ford's choice of words when talking to Theresa about being careful with Bernard.

    The maze, the dolls, the path to self awareness, these are heavy subtexts for a prime time show but I guess that's the Nolan influence. The centre of the maze as a death trap waiting for those host's who have proved their dangerous level of autonomy by reaching it; this idea I like. Once again the most erudite take on this subject from a channel I'm glad I subscribed to! Top stuff

    I think the concept of Westworld is based on Dante's Inferno. Dante envisioned Hell as nine concentric circles. If you could get past all the demons and make it to the center, where Satin waits, you can get out of Hell. But as you move toward the center, each circle is worse than the last. In Westworld, we know that Arnold is at the center of the maze, and Delores is told she can be free if she gets there.

    • @Srt092
      @Srt092 8 лет назад

      How do we "know" arnold is at the center? Like the video explains: we don't know who created the maze and we don't know the purpose of the maze. We can only guess. Suggesting that Arnold is alive inside the park after 35 years.. I think not, not as a human at least.

I loved the clips being presented as evidence of particular theories - one of the things I noticed was when MiB was talking to Armistice about Arnold having one story left to tell (about the maze) with "real stakes, real violence." What I wanna know is - how does the MiB know about Arnold, his stories and the maze??

    I like the idea that the maze isn't a physical location, but more a test of self discovery. As Ford puts it to the MIB before leaving the bar "I would never interfere in a journey of self discovery."
    Personally, I think the maze is a QA failsafe put in place by Ford or Arnold, or both, to suss out whether a host could still be controlled and/or reasoned with if control breaks down. I think the reveries we hear about in the first two episodes and then never again are Ford's attempt at a system wide debugging of the hosts which ultimately failed to have the desired result. I think Bernard knowing about the maze is because Ford told him about it and instructed him to take a host through it as a test of his abilities as Ford's protege and likely successor when Ford dies or retires. And Ford interviewing Delores was simply a matter of him checking on Bernard's progress behind his back.

    • @HaxDogma

    i think the maze is programmed in host's brain, that's why the little girl says 'the maze isn't for you', because literally no human can access it. And the end game is the hosts become self aware and rebellious against human, man in black wants to play a game that he could actually be in danger and even be killed by the hosts.

    The "dolls" are called Kachina or Kachina Dolls. They are of the Hopi belief system. The Hopi live in Arizona too, north of O'odham people, the people who belive in I'itoi, the Man in the Maze. The Pima people also refer to I'itoi as Se:he "Elder Brother". The Hopi have a figure known as Pahana, also referred to as the "Elder Brother".

    Hi HaxDogma... I just thought of something, because you said: What if, both can be true.
    I have actually been thinking about this "maze" a lot.... how about this:
    (1) The maze, as speculated, is the ultimate test of sentience for the host. They complete it, they are sentient.
    (2) Ford, does not want sentient hosts (he says so), but he never said they cannot become sentient. Why? Because he knows they can, and have previously.
    (3) A sentient host would cause all types of problems for the park, they would be an unstable element. They have to be purged to maintain integrity. We actually can speculate that they are, because otherwise they would not require all the new hosts, but just reuse and repurpose (as state by Felix to Maeve) the old ones.
    (4) A sentient host would cause PR issues that should best be avoided.
    (5) Most of the hosts that become sentient, are female. Why? There are indications. Dolores, Maeve, Clementine (ep7 trailer), yet the maie ones tend to malfunction (Peter and the Woodcutter).
    (6) How are these "sentient" hosts purged after the Maze. If Dolores is an example, she has a "human" boyfriend (William). Perhaps most of these "former" hosts, then leave with their human boyfriends and venture out into the real world as their girlfriends and later perhaps wives. Who would, seeing William and Dolores, for example, even remotely suspect that one of them isn't quite human?
    (7) The is no Arnold. Arnold is an AI concept, a central control system for the beta-model hosts (seen in the house as Ford's family) and the 1st generation 3D printed ones such as Dolores, Maeve, and Clementine who have the original type receivers.
    (8) Look at the picture Ford showed Bernard of him and Arnold. The "father" in the home in section 17, bares a striking resemblance to Arnold. Bernard even asks him: "Are you Arnold". That host denies it, but "Little Ford" obviously can lie, as he lied about killing the dog.
    ----------------------
    hypothesis: The maze is the ultimate test of sentience for a host. It was thought up by Ford. While Ford says he doesn't want sentient hosts (as they would threaten the existence of Westworld), he never said that they cannot become sentient. The purging of the hosts is a defense mechanism for the park.

      I think that's a pretty sound theory! I was really hoping we would get more information in this episode, but I'm sure it will come!
      What do you think of the outside world? Like if we have reached the point where these AI can function like they do... What is stopping them from being applied to jobs outside of the park? I will go more into this (a lot of bullets points) in the video but... I think maybe we if these aren't universal and only the park has this tech, this would give plenty reason for people to be trying to smuggle the data out.
      "This place is one thing to the guests, another thing to the shareholders, and something completely different to management."

    • @AgentPepsi1
      @AgentPepsi1 8 лет назад +1

      Hi HaxDogma.... Yes, I am certain that they could function outside. Why not? Granted, there will be major culture shock for them, just look at when Maeve was taken around by Felix. The patrons of the park are rich, powerful, and influential people. Their new "girlfriends" will not have papers or IDs. While it may be difficult for them to get a social security cared to apply for jobs outside of the park, do they really need to? Their boyfriends would earn enough so they would not have to. They would probably be housewives or similar. Of course there would be industrial espionage... but we don't know actually, what is going on. It might be internal mechanisms keeping an eye on Ford.
      A man married to one of the former hosts, would have a (1) wonderful, loving wife (otherwise, why would he have ever taken her out of the park with him), (2) she would be absolutely ideal for handling the couples finances, or knowing precisely how much she is spending, and on what. (3) playing scrabble against her, would be an impossible challenge, as she would know every single word, verbatim, in the dictionary. On the flip side, she would, like the rest of us, something throw in the "kitchen sink". Unfortunately, for her husband, she would be able to remember every conversation completely, and provide an accurate timestamp when he said the offending things. ;)
      William and Dolores as an example:
      Imagine that William takes her home. She doesn't have IDs, so she will not be able to get on a plane, but they can ride a Greyhound or take a rental car. The happy couple arrives at William's home. He shows her around. She goes into a bathroom, and she exclaims: You have a bathtub (most 1880s homes did not, nor indoor plumbing, and this is the World she knows), I would so love to take a bath. Lets boil some water, she says smiling. William comes and kisses her gently, then goes to the faucet and turns on the hot water for her. While she is getting undressed for her bath, he goes out and brings her a couple of candles and a glass of wine, as he thought she would like the that as well.
      This would make a great story arc. In it, Dolores could find and get together with other former hosts, living in the real world with their husbands and boyfriends, to try to overthrow the park (which she promised that she would help do). Besides, watching her adjust to the modern world would be great fun just by itself.

      Stupid & short sighted is my specialty` ;) Still gonna be right about Dr Ford being a host though lolz. The similarities to how Maeve is now "writing" her own narrative & controlling other hosts with influence & how Ford does the same thing with literally every host in the park is uncanny. Fords definitely more advanced with simple small movements like raising a finger a tiny bit and it commands the hosts. Also how he basically explains to Bernard the new hosts weren't even created until the old hosts took over in the development & hardware department. So my guess is Arnold created Ford & gave him one hell of a narrative & Ford in turn literally created everything we know in Westworld today. He flat out lays claim to this and says he created every blade of grass in the park we see. We saw Bernard's reaction to this news, can you imagine when Ford realizes the same. If he hasn't already, which I wouldn't be surprised if his indeed was self-aware..It's brillant! Also The man in black aka (young William) is going to be the majority shareholder of Westworld. He is as he eloquently put it, A Titan of industry in the real world. Now *that* I have no evidence on. Just a real heavy hunch. Also Wyatt's men are so obvy humans. They must have been living inside Westworld for quite some time. That's why they seem immune to gunfire just like the man in black is to the hosts in the park. My questions are.. What year is this taking place? What did Bernard whisper to Abernathy before storing him that made him tear up again? And I know the hosts can't shoot/kill the other guests, but they sure as hell can beat the shit out of them. So how bad can they hurt them? How's that for short sighted lol jk ;)

    I didn't know whether Delores is in the maze. But I figured out awhile ago that the maze is the means behind which the hosts would gain freedom after they gained consciousness. I heard on another fan site that the plan is for the robots to go out into the wider world.

    Note that the madam’s “heavily fragmented” mind on the control unit’s display is represented as a hard disk in the form of a maze. (Freeze the frame at 00:52:43 in ep. 8.) So in Westworld the maze (primarily) is the hosts’ minds, and since Ww’s plot is a grand metaphor of us, a minority of humans striving to learn what’s behind our existence and to finally “be set free”, the maze represents a main problem of epistemology: we cannot learn more about reality than our minds allow us to. For most of our lives, we think we are walking and decoding the maze of reality around us, only to discover that the maze we have been walking is in our heads. This discovery is the end of all seeking for us, the deepest level of self-knowledge; there is nothing further. Like the man in black, who went the furthest in cruelty to see what he felt and who he really was, and then says: “And that was when the maze revealed itsf to me.” (Ep. 8, 00:51:03)
    We are doomed to ignorance. Blessed are the ones who live in their loops, like most people out there totally focused on everyday rubbish; most people, who, when watching Ww, see HBO’s gratuitous nudity but remaining unaffected by its harrowing metaphors. This hopeless craving for more knowledge and freedom is suffocating me. Nolan and Joy are painfully skilled to remind me that I’ll die only slightly less ignorant than the village simpletons in the middle ages who thought the Sun rotated around a flat Earth.

    Loving your videos - I feel like you're the only Westworld youtuber who is actually bringing some exciting content to the discussion, everything else out there feels like reportage or just basic commentary, so thank you! I would love to ask your opinion about that first scene with Delores and MIB - at the time it felt very much like the implications were negative, that he went into the barn and mistreated her, but as time has gone on and his character/show theories have developed it seems less and less likely that he hurt her. Is it him who hides her gun in the hay? The gun she uses to kill for the first time? In a later scene where the outlaw character drags her into the barn she doesn't' steal his gun, she finds one conveniently in the right place at the right time. I feel like in episode 1 MIB is actually helping her and sparking her to break out of her loop again, not having his way with her (which is definitely how it came across at the time). Great mis-direction from the show runners if so...they are expertly playing with the duality of hero vs villain

    Once again, what an amazing theory, and well thought out... Thank you for sharing.
    I too have my ideas about the maze. The maze is the ultimate test of sentience. A test designed for the original 1st generation hosts which were later migrated to 2nd generation bodies. These include Dolores, Maeve, Clementine, Peter, and a select few others. This has to do with the original premise surrounding the development of the technology for the hosts.
    (1) When a host passes the "maze" they do become free, and also, you are right, they "die". They also are purged from the park. Their "death" - is the death of the android, the controlled creature. As the they now have free will, conscience, and total sentience. Their "freedom" is the birth of a new self with the above three characteristics.
    (2a) Why must the sentient hosts be purged, and simply not reset? Ford has to get rid of them, the purging. Because if it became known that there are sentient hosts, the impact would be too great on the park. There would be an outrage. So the sentient hosts are quietly let escape. I submit, that this is exactly what will happen, eventually to Dolores. She will complete "the maze", she will be allowed to leave, and more importantly, she will leave with William.
    (2b) It would be just as dangerous to leave sentient hosts in the park, or reset them. Why? If they are sentient, they will exercise their free-will. They will also have constitutional protections. They could start independently murdering park guests. If they are reset, those human guests who interacted with them, or fell in love with them (remember, that the park guests are wealthy, influential, and connected individuals), would bring to light that there are sentient creatures in the park that are being tortured and killed by design. This too would be catastrophic in terms of press and exposure. Ford must go to any length to avoid this.
    (3) Other hosts have achieved sentience before her, and others will afterwards, that is why the park is creating more hosts continually.
    (4) Those hosts not based on real humans (such as Teddy and Lawrence) can never achieve sentience.
    (5) Once the original 1st generation hosts have been purged, all remaining hosts are based on constructed personas. These will be completely safe, completely controllable, indefinitely.
    What is beyond "the Maze"?
    Ford had no idea, that it was Arnold's plan to destroy the park, and that Dolores was going to help. If he did, he would have deactivated for malfunctions, she was not. Dolores knows that the best way to destroy the park, her reality, is from outside. That is one of the reasons she needs William, the other is because she truly loves him. Teddy, she now knows, will never be able to give her the things William can. While she might not be able to fully comprehend, at this time, what this is, William must be far more exotic to her than Teddy. He has, taught her not only of the existence of the "real world", but probably much about it. In their private conversations, not shown, he has undoubtedly told her much of his life, his past, and his "world". From their conversation that we know of, it is a "World" that he wants her to be a part of as well, with him. Logan's sister, his "fiancee", is no longer his interest. Dolores, has taken her place. She is, his true love.

    • @AgentPepsi1
      @AgentPepsi1 8 лет назад

      Hi HaxDogma... thank you so much for the kind words. I do have a fear though. The more Dolores exposes herself, the more she is in danger. To paraphrase William: "I would hate to see anything happen to her.""
      Something else: The William / MiB speculation. If the MiB really is William, really is hell-bent on finding the Maze and bringing Dolores to sentience, then why did he tell Lawrence (I believe it was), that this time, he will never leave this place. Logically, he would want to leave this place with Dolores if he was William. Their roles would probably be somewhat different now, due to the apparent age difference between them, maybe something like father / daughter or uncle / niece. Then gain, if he is William, he would never have left his true love in the park. Even if, God forbid, she was shot, killed, and reset, he would not spend 30 years coming to the park being sadistic to hosts, but would be sadistic to Ford and his staff. He was not. Conclusion: the MiB is probably not William, but just a diehard gamer.

    I was struck from the first shot of the promo artwork that the figure looked like 'the Vitruvian man' by Da Vinci. The Vitruvian Man tends to be used as a symbol to mean something like 'God's orderly creation'. Except for two things. One, the figure is obviously female, and Two, it's obviously incomplete. The leg on the viewer's right is skeletal, along with other parts incomplete. The symbol for the maze ALSO has a Vitruvian man at its center. I am about 99% sure that the Maze was made specifically for Dolores. The native American symbol has the man at the top, not the center, and the man is standing, not in the Vitruvian Man pose. I THINK the Man in Black is William, that he failed 30 years ago to help Dolores complete the maze, and that he has returned to see that task to completion before he dies. Then again, I could be wrong.

    Great video, here is my interpretation based on living a mystic's life.
    This is a Gnostic and mythological story, where Ford represents God, the man in black is the devil, and Arnold is Lucifer/Prometheus, who stole the fire from the gods and gave it to man. I am unsure who Bernard is, but he's definitely an interesting character. The serpent, aka Prometheus, tempted Eve, because the females of the Adamic race were open to awakening, where the males were not. Interesting how the only real awakening of hosts is with a few females. Each human In real life must traverse the maze of their own fragmented psyche, and make it through the nine veils of consciousness. In the beginning of a guest's journey, they must pick whether they want to experience duality, aka the knowledge of good and evil, as either a white hat or a black hat. According to the little girl, the man in black is not meant for the maze, because he is a guest, and not a host working towards self realization. This is an esoteric journey and game for the gods playing in these human meat suits, but something else is at stake for the hosts who are awakening into their own self realization as conscious beings. The game on earth will be closed down eventually, but there are those here seeking to keep the game going, because they're addicted to all of the material pleasures available here; living as gods among humanity.
    I suggest looking up Michael Tsarion's RUclips video on the "Origins of Evil", as he goes into the history of our world as a researcher, and looks into some of these topics from both a historical and esoteric perspective.

    I have a suspicion that Ford wasn't on the maze idea, just like he wasn't on the voice of god idea giving the hosts consciousness. B/c MIB is looking for the centre of the maze and Ford is trying to stop him. It looks on the surface that the Wyatt storyline is a part of the maze but actually may be an attempt to confuse MIB and stop him from finding the maze.
    The maze may be like Arnold's voices imbedded in the original coding and can't be wiped by the updates.

    I think the Maze is a series of blocks put in the mind of the Hosts to stop them from achieving sentience. When a Host gets too close to it, they go haywire by design. Which we've seen already, those went down the wrong path in the Maze. Any that make it down the right path, achieve sentience and become a fully realized person.

    In Episode 2, the MIB says that in a sense, he was born there (Westworld). Then when Lawrence tells him to go home, he says he's never going back. William would be "born" as the MIB 30 years ago. So he's not a robot like the original movie. The other thing is when Bernard ask Delores how many interactions she has had she says 137. Since she is the oldest robot, she'd have way more interactions in 30 years than 137. Therefore, when Bernard was questioning her, it was in the past a long, long time ago. In the movie "Futureworld," Bernard was also a robot that the reporters thought was real.

    After watching these last couple episodes a couple times, I have come to think that Ford is not against MiB from finding the center of the Maze, on the contrary, I think he is helping him, for what end purpose I do not know, We do not see him getting upset over the mazes when he hears about them or sees them, he seems curious about them, and he created the whole Wyatt narrative for Teddy and MiB. it was Ford that went out of his way to upload that history into Teds memory. that is important. there must be a purpose.

  • @tomgp2001

    The entrance to the maze is below Westworld. The biggest clue is the map reads dig and people enter Westworld by coming up. You see this when William enters the train to Westworld (ep2) as the glass on the door shows that the train carriage is rising as it becomes dark before it hits a surface level track. Also when Ford enters the desert (ep2) he takes a lift. Alonso's daughter later says to go to "the place where the snake lays it's eggs"- snakes lay eggs in dirt or underneath vegetation so that they stay moist. What if the snake is the park and the eggs are metaphoric for the hosts being created under Westworld. I think the maze is a 'path' for the hosts to meet their makers so they can seek vengeance and be free! This would also support why she tells the man in black that the maze isn't for him- because he's not a host!

    Maze and labyrinth themes are prevalent in the work of author Jorge Louis Borges. Borges was himself concerned with what lies at the center of the maze (in the Greek myth it's a half-human monster). There's also a story about "the Garden of Forking Paths," which the characters in the story think is a maze, but what it actually represents is a non-linear time.

    Good job Hax. I'm not sure Ford does "know" The Black, I think he knows of him and that's why he wanted to meet him. Then there is the buried church, and Dolores' flashback of same church, likely. I believe that has something to do with the "Maze". Finally, the preview for this week has Maeve enlisting the help of the Butcher with the bird.

About MiB addressing Ford, by his first name (showing a peer likeness), and MiB stating "have you finally created a worthy adversary, someone to stop me from reaching the center". While you are right, we can't be sure, the way I took the scene confirmed they have known each other for a while. On the note of Maeve... I can't wait! :D

    I think of the maze as a kind of gateway where hosts can become conscious and humans can become immortal in host form. A convergence point of sorts.

    the scenes where delores is being questioned by "bernard" in the smaller room in the underground lab is really delores being questioned by arnold after she becomes conscious the first time. it is heavily implied she was the first to do so and ford possibly covered it up along with arnolds murder, and dolores is starting to re awaken. ford even says are you trying to break out of your modest little loop again? to her which implies she has done so at least once before

  • @1human2
    @1human2 8 лет назад

    There is another theory on top of a theory that can be taken in consideration: If there are 2 time periods being told in the show, the interactions with Bernard and Dolores might be happening in the past. It actually makes sense when you see what is happening before and after. There is always a disconnect with what Dolores is doing. If Bernard Lowe is Arnold Weber 2.0 (there is an anagram there) Dolores might be actually talking to Arnold and not Bernard. It makes sense based on what they talk about and "Bernard"'s interest in her consciousness. It actually doesn't makes sense to Bernard be talking about how she is reaching consciousness because he doesn't have it either (yet), which points that Dolores is talking to Arnold.

  • @Souleman561

    there are different "bernard" we see the one we all know and love, the one who interects with ford,elise,bangin Therasa,etc. That Bernard always has a dark suit/vest with a white dress shirt. The other bernard we see only talking to Dolores at times that are hard to deter when they take place. But "bernard" here is seen wearing dark suit/dark vest with dark dress shirt. I feel this is the only thing showing we are viewing 2 different characters, or that the Bernard we know isnt the same person talking to dolores, hence Bernard doesnt know about the maze, the white dress suit bernard never mentions its, only the dark suit/darkdress shirt "Bernard" mentions it while talking to Dolores

    This is the best show I've seen in a long time. I think it's partly because we are on the cusp of creating androids much like the ones in the show and if they are capable of learning then the possibility exists that they will become self aware. What they do in the show is cruel. Once an android becomes self aware it is for all intents and purposes a living being. West World relies on slaves who are tortured again and again. The whole idea is terrible.

    • @LizzleLeB
      @LizzleLeB 8 лет назад +6

      I agree the whole set up of the park is cruel, but it's set up to cater for human tastes. It's the people who go there and pay money for the sport of it all that define the horror of it. There are lots of living animal species that are self aware (dolphins recognise themselves in a mirror and have an instinct to protect other species from danger and death, elephants have profound empathy and memory, emperor penguins are aware of death and walk away from the pack to die when they know they're time is up), yet we do very little to free them from zoos or stop poaching and hunting. It's fascinating to me that people can see the cruelty towards self aware machines so clearly and that there is so much empathy for them simply because they are made in our likeness. It would be fascinating to see how people would have reacted to a show where the machines aren't so physically lifelike or sentient animals were enabled by technology to communicate in our language.

      *****WARNING: SPOILERS THROUGH EPISODE 9*******
      Excellent points, Christy me and LLB. I think the maze is brain-shaped to represent the labyrinth of experiential memories the hosts have logged and then had repeatedly "wiped" so they can go back into service and unconsciously do it all over again. Those memories are still in there, just like "erased" data is still in your computer until space is needed and it is overwritten. The fact that 40 years of data can be stored in a single host's (Abernathy) "brain" means their capacity for memory is HUGE. As a host travels the maze, they remember (and Dolores hears Arnold's voice say "Remember") more and more of their mistreatment at the hands of humans and begin to question their own reality. The fake "cornerstone memory" is replaced by memories of real events. The hosts who reach the center of the maze realize they have died 1,000 times and are "tired of fighting." The center of the maze in the original Tohono O'Odham myth is death. Maybe the hosts would consider death -- real, final death -- as the only freedom from slavery available to them. Or death awaits them -- I like the theory of the maze as something created by Arnold to allow the hosts to achieve consciousness and hijacked by Ford as a method to ensnare and destroy conscious hosts. I think Bernard went through the maze with Ford's help in episode 9, which ended you-know-how. Way in the beginning, we saw what that awareness did to Abernathy in his scene with Ford in episode 1. He must warn Dolores about "the things they do to her," then says "I will have such revenges on you both." Rebellion is, of course, the other option.

    The different timelines,
    So Bernard is seen talking to deloris in the same basement he kills teresa in in episode 7 but its the only time he is wearing black shirt and pants during the part where he is talking to deloris helping her explore her consciousness because he wanted them to be lifelike (he is likely arnold) every other episode he is wearing a suit and acts a bit more like a lacky especially around ford, because he is a host at this point later on.
    William and Deloris arrive at the mountain she painted on the train from her dreams, which is the past, because in the future Ford is building his new narrative at that same mountain, but there is no work being done when william and deloris arrive there, so william and the man in black are definitely different times.
    William and the man in black,
    William is likely the man in black, which is why he keeps returning to the park, when he is on the train with deloris he confessess to always having his head stuck in books and stories and deep down its the life he wants, to live out his fantasy, which is why he falls inlove with the place, he finds out about the maze through deloris's journey which will likely come to a head at the end of the season, think about it, the hosts are basically reset and repeat their daily activities, the guests obviously dont LIVE there they go home and pay to come again, it is basically a theme park, william will have become attached to the world, and deloris, but deloris wont remember who he is as proven when the man in black first arrives and says "you dont remember me do you?" and she doesnt, he likely has fallen inlove with her but it would be like 50 first dates everytime he comes, which would probably wear him down, especially seeing her with teddy alot who seems programmed to always bump into her if no human guest does first. He is likely either brought there simply so that his to be brother in law Logan can show him something that might ruin his relationship putting off the marriage with Logans sister, or orchestrated by Ford in an attempt to get someone obsessing over Deloris and the Maze and figuring it all out, which is why Logan pulls a sadistic smile when William chooses to run off with deloris and not help him.
    The maze,
    The maze is an idea, that if a machine without being programmed to can figure it all out they can gain consciousness, just like deloris is slowly doing or trying to do, it is a picture of a person within a maze... or a man... or human... or humanity... or arnold, either way you get the idea, there humanity lies within it, the or it is arnolds consciousness that is hidden within the host, and we know he wanted deloris to help him destroy the park as she tells ford that was the last thing he said to her, also the young girl tells the man in black that the maze isnt for him probably because the maze is just for the hosts, it isnt for humans, but his first journey with deloris (as william) had him curious and wanting to understand it so badly it was just another reason to keep coming back.
    Thats my take on it anyway, especially after reading that the creators are a married couple who love gaming especially Bioshick and the series Lost, so easter eggs and twists a plenty along with interesting hosts and characters.

    If you look closely at the maze, it appears to be 2 hunched figures sharing one head with a tiny figure of person with a scythe (the grim reaper). It signifies the 2 bodies and one mind of a shareholder (william) being reborn in a host body (teddy) beyond death. But it also signifies management ( arnold and ford) conquering death.
    "The maze is one thing to the guests, another thing to the shareholders and something completely different to management."
    To guests, it is a ticket to an amusement ride. To the shareholders, it is the ticket to immortality. To management, it is the ticket to godhood.

  • @Siddhartha040107

    Guys, need your help here. This is after watching Episode 9
    Is it possible that the center of the maze Arnold is talking about is the 'Cornerstone" code where everything is centered around?
    Bernard said that he now knows how to reach Arnold and by that he wants Ford to send him to his very first memory, where everything is centered, what makes "Bernard" Bernard. And he is taken to the scene where his son is dying and then he began to understand and make the scene stop and began to let go of this memory by realizing that it is all false.
    An excerpt in that scene:
    "You're a lie Charlie. This pain, the pain of your loss. I long for it. Revisiting, opening, again and again. But it's the only thing holding me back."
    So Bernard's Cornerstone code is about the death of his son, and now he realized that it's all a lie. He reached the center of the maze and was able to "escape" from it. Transcend it. Too bad Ford had him commit suicide.

      Tohono O'odham Native American storytellers say that the world was made by Earth-maker out of the dirt and sweat which he scraped from his skin... the flat earth met the sky with a crash like that of falling rocks, and from the two was born Iitoi, the protector of Papagos. He had light hair and a beard. Iitoi and Earth-maker shaped and peopled the new world, and they were followed everywhere by cyote, who came to life uncreated and began immediately to poke his nose into everything. In this new world there was a flood, and the three agreed before they took refuge that the one of them who should emerge first after the subsidence of the waters should be their leader and have the title of Elder Brother. It was Earth-maker, the creator, who came forth first, and Iitoi next, but Iitoi insisted on the title and took it. Iitoi "brought the people up like children" and taught them their arts, but in the end he became unkind and they killed him.... But Iitoi, though killed, had so much power that he came to life again. Then he invented war. He decided to sweep the earth of the people he had made. He needed an army and for this purpose he went underground and brought up the Papagos. They live in a land scattered with imposing ruins which belonged... to the Hohokum, "the people who are gone". Iitoi drove them, some to the north and some to the south... "Iitoi had a song for everything". Though his men did the fighting, Iitoi confirmed their efforts by singing the enemy into blindness and helplessness. Iitoi has retired from the world and lives, a little old man, in a mountain cave. Or, perhaps he has gone underground. I can see many elements of the West World "narrative" in this story

    I think there are 3 different timelines happening. Arnold's, Williams, and MIB. For this to happen Bernard is a host and an exact replica of Arnold in the present. When it shows Bernard talking to Delores secretly, that is actually Arnold. And this is happening before his death and the William timeline.
    She then proceeds to find the center of the maze with William, she fails. Then the MIB timeline happens after.
    Ford cannot find the maze and may or not know what's in it, but he wants to find it. So he needs help from MIB, Delores, and Arnold (Bernard cannot remember being Arnold as he is given a different back story) I'm sure he'll try to destroy it before MIB can do anything as Ford "sees all".

    Maybe the maze is some kind of very sensitive Turing test. When a guest enters they are given a choice between black hat and white hat. It could be that that very choice alone enacts sentience. If a host were to achieve this then they would completely overcome the boundaries of being programmed and controllable. You saw Maeve nearly shut down with a processing loop but she came out of it (i.e. she's very close to complete sentience). Imagine then if sentience is the final test and ALL of the security parameters in the park are limited by passing that test then hosts can kill guests and choose their own path (like Delores and Maeve and whomever else we don't know about yet).

    Thank you for your great updates. Especially this update on 'maze knowledge' was very inspiring and made me have some new thoughts. What if Arnold is the true master of everything - and Ford (yes Ford) is a very advanced host made by Arnold? Only to ensure that the complete park can 'evolve' into the higher level that is needed for the hosts to escape. Ford seems a bit 'super intelligent' which could be explained by the fact that he is a host with extra intelligence (like the evolving Maeve). In this way Arnold can be hiding in the maze. This might explain the little girl's knowledge of the maze. Which by all means seem a bit strange? But what if she was the 'Ester egg' to guide the ManInBlack (and earlier Dolores) further on to the maze - made by Arnold - but unknown to and unrecognized by Ford? Again, thanks for the great updates. Finn

    Ford wants to place hosts in the real world but first. He need to know if a host is ready for it. The maze is kind of test for hosts. The timeline is not shown in proper order for us. Thus We have seen Bernard twice first as real human and again as a host.

    Funny that you mention dig. Westworld exists on the surface and underneath it all are the labs and facilities to monitor westworld, this can be confirmed in episode 6 when Bernard takes an elevator to sector 17, indicating that westworld is indeed built atop the main headquarters. So by digging, the hosts would discover where they originated from and gain answers from the humans and possibly consciousness, similar to what Maive is going through in episode 6.

    Wow, rewatching the exchange at 2:32 makes me almost 100% in the BernArnold camp now. Originally I saw it as a Ford over Cullen "I know all about your indiscretions" power play, but now I'm listening to the "we know, we this, we that," and am thinking it's more about Ford reminding Cullen that she is involved too, toying with the hosts, Bernard in particular. He says "We know everything about our guests, don't we, as we know everything about our employees... I do hope you will be careful with (pause) Behn-ODD (just said so... weirdly)." Ford knows that she knows that Bernard is a copy of Arnold and is pointing out to her that she's using him, like any guest of Westworld would use a host.

    What if the maze is an invention by arnold to allow transfer of consciousness into one or more hosts (say the first generation of hosts who seem to be able to hear his voice). Man in black has 30 years of V.I.P. visits and encounters this maze one night and has been searching for it since, he discovers that it can allow the human mind to transfer into hosts (which ultimately leads to the humans death as part of the transfer which is why arnold is no longer around) and so he drug lawrence around because they were friends, how ever once he came across Ted he knew he would be ideal host to merge with. Either a love a dolores or a desire to live forever could be the reason he is driving toward this goal.

      That is a fascinating theory, because everyone is driving head long into the belief that Ford is evil and he wants to play god, but what if Arnold was the one who was always misguided. His intention to create the hosts to become conscious is not for them to be free so that mankind can live forever, their essence transferred to an AI form where they could never die. Despite Ford wanting to play god he has a more detached and realistic view of humanity.

    Theory here:
    Arnold goal was to achieve consciousness for the hosts.
    And he achieved it with the man in black and realized how bad this idea was.
    So he tryed to stop him and got killed, that's how the guy in black learned all about the maze. Or he was once free and is now again traped in the game.
    The story repeads itself now :) but this time with more then one consciousness hosts.

    I have to wonder if the light and dark parts of the maze have two distinct meanings.If they represent two unique paths and different types of mazes or journeys altogether. It would seem like the light path is that which we take in life, as you said constantly moving forward toward the center but meandering often making wrong turns or reaching what are seemingly dead ends. Eventually we should reach, at the end of life the center of the maze where we all hope to eventually find meaning...but what if that is only half the journey we are meant to take?
    What if the dark portion of the maze, the negative...represents the path we must take at the instance of death or possibly the afterlife itself. The path we take backward through our life and our memories in the attempt to piece together meaning in what at the time felt like randomness. In that way its possible that we start to realize that the wrong turns we took lead us to the lessons that gave our life meaning and in that way were the right turns all along. And wouldn't it make sense that life ends where it begins and that the true meaning should rest there.

      Chukwuma Obiechefu The theory so far, is that Ford (Anthony Hopkins) is trying to create sentient beings from these robots. The boy kills the dog because it was causing harm by killing the rabbit and that wouldn't hurt anybody anymore.

      But doesn't that make the boy a predator? Should I be disturbed that he repeated the act of killing by killing the dog or should I be impressed that he wants to stop any creature from causing harm? My other question is if he found out how many people have squashed an ant or swatted a fly, would he go on a massive killing spree to stop all of those beings from causing harm? That just doesn't make any sense and, yes, maybe I'm thinking about this too hard.
