Dude. I am LATE to the party here, but as a fiber artist who was hired to teach both fiber AND printmaking classes, these videos have been LIFE SAVING in my lesson planning. Thank you for keeping these up on RUclips for over a decade. Awesome explanations that not only taught me but will help me teach others -- and maybe I'll even use them in class. :)
Awesome. You’re welcome. Glad I can help through my videos. I also try to be sure all my videos are G rated so educators can use them in class. Hopefully, I will be able to make new videos in the future. Thanks for watching. CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com
You can use any room with subdued light. The bathroom, a large closet or the kitchen in the evening. As for drying, you could do it late at night and store in a closet or you could make a drying case from 2X4s and plywood. Just make sure the case has enough ventilation for the emulsion to dry properly.
I am really appreciative of the time and effort you place in your educational videos. I also like the fact that you mention insights and tips that other videos seem to overlook or assume the viewer already knows. When I began silk screening, I was frustrated to no end and then I found you....thank you again for all of your videos and help!
i always like Catspit's extra explanations of why a process is done in a certain way eg. drying screen face down so emulsion becomes thicker on that side due to gravity.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the support greatly. You’re welcome and I’m glad I could help out. Yes, I believe a 1/1 coat with a pass on the ink well side and the substrate side will encapsulate the mesh with emulsion resulting in better emulsion to mesh adhesion. It will also give you a thicker stencil if you do the substrate side first and the inkwell side last. Then store them substrate side down parallel to the ground. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠
Thanks, glad you found me. I’m very happy to hear you enjoy my work. No, I use the garden hose for washing out the stencils, some mesh prep, and removing inks with ink wash. The pressure washer is used for removing emulsions with emulsion remover and stains with haze remover. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠

@firetack Thanks, good idea. I appreciate your sharing. I have worked at many shops which had coating holders and such but I always liked hand holding mine. Hi ... I'm a french guy and I watch your video this afternoon. It's very great and its help me a lot, 'cause i've started the art of screen printing since a few month. So thank you for your work and I hope to see more HOW TO by CATSPIT Prod ... Bye (sorry for the mistakes) x x x IANIK x x x
If you want to print posters, all you need to change is your ink. I think an air dry water based ink would work well on heavy paper stock. Not sure what you mean by instant emulsion. If you mean pre- sensitized, that is what I use. Your emulsion may be washing off for any of a number of reasons. Maybe under cured? Or having trouble adhering to a dirty screen? Or is it not mixed properly or old? It is very difficult to diagnose these problems without seeing what is going on.
We screen printers work in some interesting ways. I can't work on my knees like you but I too rig stuff up. I bought a little air compressor, I spray my screens with it after shooting jobs out. Another shop recommended it to me and it keeps the stencil from getting any unwanted blocking when drying.
Yes, I don’t kneel anymore thank goodness. I finally moved out of this shop and have my own set up now. Check out my newer videos. I also use low pressure air to clear out my washed pout screens. How To Screen Print: Clearing Out The Stencil After Screen Washout Thanks for watching!
Thank Edgar! I am glad you enjoy the videos. I actually buy my screens pre-stretched with mesh. I get them from a wholesaler so it is economical for me. They are not too expensive these days. So I cannot really do a video on it just yet. Maybe I will visit another shop and make a screen making video someday. Ill try to cover everything eventually. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks! Glad you like my videos and find them to be educational. You degrease and abrade the mesh when it’s new and only degrease it after reclaiming. I do believe I have videos on this that go in more detail and articles on the website too. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
Thank you! I use glitter or sparkle type inks that are premixed. It’s the best option for an ink that will perform properly. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
Veo muchos tus videos son excelentes. todas las noches despues de venir del trabajo los veo para ir aprendiendo... sos un master te felicito... Gracias
tip:try leaning the screen against a wall with a wedge at the bottom then you can use 2 hands to get a more even coat, the more upright you can get the screen the better
@rodolfo solis I prefer using soap and water type degreasers as opposed to a petroleum paint thinner. It may take longer but I think it will remove unwanted particles better. Thanks for watching!
@porsenora This could be under exposure or poor emulsion to mesh adhesion. Under exposure can cause the emulsion to become saturated with water prematurely in the washout booth. That will cause you to easily reuse parts of your stencil and bubbling as well. Poor mesh adhesion can also cause bubbling and it could be a combination of these. Try prepping your screens better before coating them with emulsion and try increasing your exposure time a bit. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
Ive pretty much watched all your videos on screen printing here. By far the best on RUclips. All the emulsions I find are two part. What brand do you use in this video that seems to be a one part?

@canuckchris2010 Yes, “flooding” the screen out with a large stream of water helps sheet off everything. If you have a garden hose with an open end, that will work nicely too at the right flow. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

Very good video. Where do you buy your mesh? I looking for an online shop that just sells rolls of mesh. Any sites you can buy it of for a decent price and that ships to the uk or is in the uk. Cheers good job.
I like watching your videos, i even bought the Ranar 1 station, 4 color screen press, i bought 4 new 200 mesh screens, with the new scoop coater, i began coating the screens with “PC 787 Universal Photopolymer Emulsion”. It is violet in colour. Print side first, then squeegee side last. This morning, under dark room conditions, seemed like dried up drips on the print side formed while in drying cabinet , i put on too thick i believe. Thinking the other half of screen was okay, i tried to step expose the other half with a halftone film positive image. I washed the screen everything washed away! Lol. What do you suggest? I made six 15 second step exposures. It’s been a long time since doing this.
It could be that there is not enough ventilation for the humidity to escape the box. That can cause what you described as well. If the photopolymer emulsion washed out completely then you exposure light may not have enough UV light to cure it unless you do a very long exposure. You may need to work in minutes instead of seconds depending on what you are using to expose screens. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

Until the emulsion is dry. I can’t say how long that may be where you are because I do not know the humidity or your drying conditions. But I coat about 12 or more at a time and let them dry overnight in a light safe dry box with vents. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Ferdinand Lopez That all really depends on the artwork for the mesh count. The exposure time will vary depending on the emulsion you use, the quality of your film positive and your exposure source. Emulsion is pretty benign when used properly. But you cannot allow children to play with it or be able to ingest it. It's just not appropriate. Handle it like any other household chemical you wouldn't want your kids to get into. But no, you don't necessarily need gloves or a mask unless you are super sensitive to something in it. I've never seen anyone wear any mask with emulsion though. It does not stink or give off any vapors. I hope that helps out. Thanks for watching! While using the 330 Mash, my photo emulsion doesn't glue to the mash properly, but slips on the mash and the emulsion can't be removed with a remover afterwards. When I do the same thing on the 180 Mash, everything goes well and it doesn't slip at all. In your opinion, what's the reason for that and could you please suggest me anything? Thanks in advance.
Well I don’t know for sure. That is strange. It could be you need to abrade the mesh. Use a mesh abrader to rough the thread fibers some so the emulsion has something to bite onto. Sir, can you please answer me .. i've removed the emulation from the screen using stripper. it's okay. but some inks are still on there.i've tried to remove that.but it's not easy to remove. so i bought the screen wash. now, how do i use that ? really love to see your videos. thanks:)))
+TRHZ Designs If there is ink in the mesh after reclaiming it's probably dried in there. Was it water based ink? Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
+TRHZ Designs If the water based ink dried in the mesh it could be ruined. You could try a haze remover with a pressure washer to see if it will push out of the mesh. But normally you need to clean up water based inks very well immediately after use otherwise they will ruin stuff like screens when it dries.
+Rebecca Johnson If you listen closely to what I am saying you will understand. This was done for demo purposes with the light on for the camera. @OldDirtyRetard I really don’t know what the cheapest emulsion on the market is. And as far as shipping to the U.K. It wouldn’t be economically practical I think for just a little emulsion. The shipping is likely to cost more than the emulsion. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠

+Art Barnett I think so people will ask me that very question..... lol ;) Actually there are no reasons other than the maker. Each manufacturer uses a different dye for their emulsions. The emulsion color has nothing to do with anything except who makes it. And even then they all use red for instance and blue. So don't worry about the color unless it is difficult to reclaim or it stains the mesh. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

John that is pretty cool, what kind of scoop coater you are using?
@Mach S - Thanks, I use one like this: catspitscreenprintsupply.com/16-inch-aluminum-scoop-coater/ Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate your support!

Once I apply emulsion how long do the screens need to set before burning??
Until the emulsion is dry. I can’t say how long that may be where you are because I do not know the humidity or your drying conditions. But I coat about 12 or more at a time and let them dry overnight in a light safe dry box with vents. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
sir im a printer can i ask what mesh of screen for half tone and how many minute for expose
Ferdinand Lopez That all really depends on the artwork for the mesh count. The exposure time will vary depending on the emulsion you use, the quality of your film positive and your exposure source. These videos may help out:

If i have a small design , do i have to coat the entire screen ???
Not if you don't want to but then you'll have to block out the rest of the mesh with tape or block out filler. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
You are so helpful, thanks a million!
@porsenora Depending on the brand and the type it can be between $50 and $80 or so. You can get screen printing supplies like emulsion at a discount using promo codes from the Print Supplies page of the Catspit website. See the RUclips channel page for the link. I am learning screen printing. My problem is when I wash screen with water after exposing ,my whole coating gets washed off.where I am going wrong?
If all of the emulsion is washing out when you try to make the stencil, then it's probably under exposed quite a bit. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Why does it matter what side you coat first?
i heard you. work both sides. cool tutorial.

Hi mate, how safe is the emulsion, notice no gloves or mask? I am looking at setting up at home, we have kids that I am a little concerned about?
Emulsion is pretty benign when used properly. But you cannot allow children to play with it or be able to ingest it. It's just not appropriate. Handle it like any other household chemical you wouldn't want your kids to get into. But no, you don't necessarily need gloves or a mask unless you are super sensitive to something in it. I've never seen anyone wear any mask with emulsion though. It does not stink or give off any vapors. I hope that helps out. Thanks for watching! CatspitProductions appreciate the quick reply, thumbs up to you kind sir.
You're very welcome :)
I really enjoyed this, would you please rename the vids in order? Part 1,2,3 etc... so we don't have to search around and hope we get the process in the correct order. It would really help us, and you will get more views. Thanks, man. ;-)
great demo thank you
Sir, can you please answer me .. i've removed the emulation from the screen using stripper. it's okay. but some inks are still on there.i've tried to remove that.but it's not easy to remove. so i bought the screen wash. now, how do i use that ? really love to see your videos. thanks:)))
+TRHZ Designs If there is ink in the mesh after reclaiming it's probably dried in there. Was it water based ink? Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
+CatspitProductions Yes Sir, it's waterbased ink. so what should i do next . should i mix "screen wash" with water and then scrub? thanks..
+TRHZ Designs If the water based ink dried in the mesh it could be ruined. You could try a haze remover with a pressure washer to see if it will push out of the mesh. But normally you need to clean up water based inks very well immediately after use otherwise they will ruin stuff like screens when it dries.
+CatspitProductions Okay Sir, i'll try a haze remover . thanks so much!! your videos are excellent .thanks:)))
+TRHZ Designs Thank you! Glad you enjoy my video work. You're very welcome, I hope it clears out for you ;)
hi is the light on in this video? is it okay to use a light bulb?
+Rebecca Johnson If you listen closely to what I am saying you will understand. This was done for demo purposes with the light on for the camera. But all screen making with emulsion is done under darkroom conditions. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
+CatspitProductions hi thanks for replying. I actually never watched the video all the way through, my mistake sorry lol

hi im richard head and i enjoy this video...thanks much
how comes everytime i try screen printing my emulsion is not giving me a clear picture on the screen after exposure.?
It may be a poor film positive or the film positive is not sandwiched against the emulsion coated screen well enough. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
@OldDirtyRetard I really don’t know what the cheapest emulsion on the market is. And as far as shipping to the U.K. It wouldn’t be economically practical I think for just a little emulsion. The shipping is likely to cost more than the emulsion. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠
how many screens can you cover with 1 gallon?
David Sowell It can vary depending on how much emulsion you sue per screen but it will be a lot. A gallon will do several dozen screens or more. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

do you have an email I can contact you by? I have a specific question.
Im glad you enjoy my videos and find them useful. The names of the videos tell you what you will learn about. I try to make them and post them in a logical sequential order. These videos are very hard to make, (I do them by myself), and I try to make each one independent of the others so that you may gain something useful in one video. The first video, How To Screen Print: The Process Explained, contains the sequence of the entire process. Thanks for the comment!
I’m not exactly sure what you are asking but visit my website and check out more of my videos. That will help you learn more about the process. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠

im new on screen printing but i did well soon ill finish done making my home made, 4 color P-machine. hope to buy ur product soon hehe :) btw thnx again
my name is ECKO
why are emultions different colors
+Art Barnett I think so people will ask me that very question..... lol ;) Actually there are no reasons other than the maker. Each manufacturer uses a different dye for their emulsions. The emulsion color has nothing to do with anything except who makes it. And even then they all use red for instance and blue. So don't worry about the color unless it is difficult to reclaim or it stains the mesh. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
