  • Post-World War II Germany: After World War II, Germany was divided into four occupation zones controlled by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union. Berlin, located within the Soviet zone, was similarly divided.
Cold War Tensions: The differing political ideologies of the Western Allies (capitalism and democracy) and the Soviet Union (communism) led to increased tensions. West Berlin became an isolated enclave of the Western Allies surrounded by East Germany.
Mass Emigration: By the late 1950s, many East Germans were fleeing to West Berlin to escape the repressive regime and seek better economic opportunities. This mass emigration was a significant problem for East Germany.
