You guys should never have to defend yourselves. Homesteading is different for everyone who chooses to live this lifestyle, and unless folks are there with you day in and day out, they can’t possibly be more fit to make the decisions for you than you are.
Keep doing what you’re doing, and it will all work out for you long term.

They mentioned in the introduction, talking about it will help those new to homesteading, understand the process involved in decision making. So it's probably more for educational purposes, than defending their position. :)

Most large dairies rotate thier cows at 4 to 6 years citing this is when there is peak production. I'm 65. I remember milk cows on the dairy that were 17, 18 years old. I wonder if there is as correlation so they dont have to be accountable.

Also, most bacteria are killed in the cooking process. If you cook your meat, pressure cook, as in an instant pot, the temperatures should be high enough to kill the bad stuff. I would eat the meat. I know you will cook the meat. I know you will be more careful in the butchering process because of the knowledge you have, and that being said, the processed meat will be a cleaner product than anything you can buy. Considering that meat processors are buying product from China, Nigeria, India, and many other countries, already butchered in oversea plants....it would be a shame to waste her. I personally would not eat the kidneys or the liver as these are part of the filtering systems that protect us. Best of luck. I appreciate your sharing this, I have learned so much through your efforts. I raise cows and goats, and I drink raw milk and eat the meat. I just butchered my very healthy 17 year old cow. My herd has been a family closed herd for that long.

It's very interesting to hear all this information about Johnes disease because it really shows just how flawed the food system really is. I would also like to say that I totally get why you guys would eat her meat because you don't want to waste it since there is so much food that would come out of it. I personally wouldn't bother doing a lot of different cuts of meat, I would probably do the easy ones and then turn the rest into ground beef and dog food. Just simply because it would be hot during the butchering process and would make it difficult to butcher. Anyway, I totally support any decision you make and I would like to applaud you for taking the time to learn as much as possible about Johnes and share the information with everyone.

Hey folks, I can throw a bit of a wrench into your dairy to Crohn's Disease pipeline worry-my sister and I are both older GenXers who don't do ANY dairy and haven't ever. My mother never liked milk so she gave up on dairy, especially when she thought my oldest sister, (who has had digestive issues from early childhood), was allergic to it. We didn't have daily at all. My oldest sister still has some digestive issues deal with it by taking LactAide has chosen to eat dairy since she left home 4 decades ago.
As for me and my other sister?
    We both have Crohn's.
Is there a dairy connection to Crohn's? Maybe, but you may still end up with it, anyway. Life's like that.

I am so very sorry this happened to you. It is heartbreaking. I am just glad that you have each other to lean on and are able to smile, even a little. 😊 Maybe there is a good bacteria you could spread with seed to help kill the bad one in the pastures. This was a terrible hit, but look at how much you have learned and all the people you are helping by sharing it. I guess the only thing a person could do, is buy your first cow as an older animal and have her tested before the sale. That is assuming the test is accurate enough to test even recently exposed cattle. And it sounds time consuming, which isn't very practical for sales, but hey after hearing this a little patience may be worth it. I don't understand why the bacteria would not be killed during pasteurization, but I will look it up. Thank you for being so candid about everything. This video answered alot of questions. God Bless and keep you strong.

Great attitude. I have been there. Our very first buck was purchased from a farm that claimed to be disease free. He tested positive for CAE. We tested a second time and it came positive. We finally decided not to kill him, but we gave him to a rescue. Our last herd test came up with several of our goats positive or chance for CL. We were shocked. We have never seen any signs of disease and always buy from clean herds. I think it does come down to people being over confident. I do not believe that our goats have CL. I think the test is faulty. I have also heard that Johnnes is also one of those that have false positives.
Sorry to hear your goats died. I know you enjoyed them.

You guys are great and we do appreciate your honesty and we learn so much. Back in the 60s we used to get local milk, delivered by the milkman, we were so healthy and had great teeth. When they stopped we started having issues. Thinking we need to raise our own food and thinking how do we get more vegan. Really wondering if we should be eating bugs. lol. Thanks for being so generous with us all. We are all in this together, as I sit her with a belly ache, :( Blessings.
ps-I have given up on red med now for sure. God help us

While it’s sad about Ladybug, sounds like your situation could have been a lot worse. It’s a testament to your great animal husbandry.

Aust, I enjoy #AskHomesteady. Forget the negative Nancy’s and just focus on the questions you think are worth answering! Sorry you guys have to go through this, especially after what you went through with the goats.

We have Johnes here in the UK and shockingly, it is not a notifiable disease, although it is in Northern Island.

I'm new to your channel, and my heart goes out to you. I paused the video while you were discussing "to eat or not to eat" and you may decide differently. But I wanted to share my thoughts from the heart, and my solution as well. I know that you love your Ladybug. I used to raise prey animals but I would cry when they died unexpectedly. My perspective was that I could purchase animals raised by others, but if I was going to have animals that needed to eat other animals, I wanted to be a part of their life as well as death. I wanted to make sure they had a good life. IF I could, I'd raise all the meat I eat. And if I was in your situation, with an animal that I loved, I would feel almost as if it was important that I do commune with her each time I consumed some of the meat she left behind. There is a lot more love in this than anything, especially if you know that her meat is fine to eat. BUT then there's the logistical issue of slaughtering her at a time that is not optimal. I was wondering if you could rent a refrigerated truck for a day, that plus some tarp, you could create a small processing space that is cut off from the bugs and heat of the summer day, enabling you to do the butchering. It's not optimal of course, but it seems as if you could at least create a space that makes it not so logistically nightmarish.

Our bodies are made by God and they are amazing in the way we can filter everything. Pray over the food. Receive it with gratefulness. God bless.
