I saw something once that said american black people that didnt grow up in certain environments act like their from the "hood" because alot of us arent connected too our culture from whatever tribe that may be. So we identify with the hood culture that some of us are around and thats pushed in the media because thats the closest thing too a culture we can recognize as our own.
As a black male growing up in the suburbs I definitely did feel like I had to commit crimes and be a thug to be "black". I outgrew that mindset when I was like 17 tho
This a whole conversation but i think theres some merit too it. I mean in some areas you arent black if you speak properly, i could definitely see if you hang with certain people and idealize certain behaviors for so long that their idea of what masculinity and being black is. Cause in some circles being a hood rat flashing guns is something masculine men do. Doesnt mean it actually is what they do but its what those people think it is.
