    Ok everyone saying she needs to consider a different method doesn’t know her or what she’s tried. I know plenty of horses who’ve been weaned cold turkey (I own a mare who I guarantee was weaned that way) and she’s just fine. I will agree some foals are better off than others and will react better than others. There are so many factors that should be considered, colts can breed back to their dams, mares can loose weight, mare may not be producing enough milk, the foal may be stealing all the dams hay, etc.
    I have a foal that my vet said to wean at 3 months if my mare wasn’t gain and retaining weight because of her health. Vets won’t geld colts until a minimum of 6 months old but if you have a 3-4 month old Colt mounting his mare constantly there could be the possibility of him breeding his mare (which is a disaster waiting to happen genetically). Criticizing someone based off of another RUclipsr (who as far as I know has never bred a mare or bought a mare and foal combo) isn’t fair. You don’t know what conversations she’s had with her vet about weaning so you can’t judge. When I asked my vet about weaning my Colt he never suggested a method just a time period.
    My suggestion is to stick to your own business, educate yourself, and talk with your vet if your trying to wean a foal. Judging someone based of a 1-30 minute video isn’t fair. Do your own research and let others be. Harassing and repeating information (without doing your own thorough research and being able to provide said person with the research) will not make someone change if they don’t want to.

    As much as I adore your love for your foals, this is not a proper way of weaning. There is no “one good way” of weaning of course, but putting them away like that and in a confined space causes a lot of stress to them, and that stress lasts. Unfortunately, horses are easy to be traumatised and we want to limit this as much as possible ❤ the foals show visible distress. Before you ask me how long I have been breeding, I work at breeding facility for years now, the breeding facility is breeding for about 4-5 generations by now and has around 20 foals per year, I also consult and work with foals at different facilities where there are 1-5 foals a year, sometimes more. I’ve seen A LOT and I worked with hundreds of foals at this point. The difference is huge. Many people don’t understand just how huge and how many behaviours later in their life are caused by it. Please at least do your own research and consider other methods.
    All the best to you and your horses ❤

    This is very much not how my barn does it, and their foals and moms are much more chill and seem pretty well-adjusted. I'm a bit concerned about the confined space, with all of them freaking out and running on top of each other? Would it be possible to have a different non-mom adult nearby, a horse they're familiar with, there to help them feel less alone and afraid? Kind of like an aunt or uncle to just be nearby and when they see that that horse is calm, maybe they'll be more calm? I'm just a hobby rider but I feel like that might make things easier for them, emotionally. And less dangerous if they're not flailing and running and thrashing inside a stall. :S

    • @tabortoothtiger7580
      @tabortoothtiger7580 Год назад +13

      It's already been commented, but they did have another older horse there to calm them down. Bo is always put with the babies to calm them down. Katie's family have been doing this for years. And these little babies are happy and healthy. They had a stressful day or two, but are now okay. Instead of dragging it out and putting them through several days of trauma like others have suggested. This is the method Katie's family have used for a long time, and it works for them.

    I gotta say girl, I've followed you on here for a LONG time, but I am speechless over this. I had no idea people still did cold turkey weaning. You have all those beautiful pastures and you can't do it properly? In addition, you are taking multiple foals who have never met, are going through something extremely traumatic (thanks to you), and you expect the sh*t to not hit the fan in that stall? You were so shocked by the baby being "dramatic" for kicking at you. I'd kick you because you just took my Mom away when I was still nursing and locked me in a tiny room with 2 other horses for days too.
    You think Penelope might be the chillest (despite showing the whites of her eyes) because she got to spend 2 more months with her mother than the other 2 had? Maybe she was a bit more ready for this? Just a thought.

      Just FYI, Raleigh quoted a study that was only done on pigs. Not equine. So a ton of her “scientific proof” is flawed. Have you done your own research, (like legit peer reviewed studies) or are you just regurgitating what somebody else said? Because it definitely sounds like the latter. These foals are perfectly fine.

    Please PLEASE do your research. This is the absolute WORST thing you can do to foals. Pre-emptively giving them ulcer meds 👀😱 I know this is how things have been done on your farm for decades but please consider breaking this abusive cycle. You seem like a very sweet person who cares for the horses. There are so many studies out there that show how bad this is. It causes not only serious mental distress and damage but can also lead to injuries. Science backed proof this is horrible for foals. I worked for on a farm that was passed down through generations and the granddaughter had so many arguments with parents and grandparents because she believed certain things they were doing were cruel. I know this is how you were taught so please reconsider. That’s all. Much love and respect

    • @destinyr7306
      @destinyr7306 Год назад +12

      Some of the “science backed proof” that Raleigh provided was a study only done on pigs and not equine. Which discredits what she was saying, a ton. Many, many owners give ulcerguard before any type of stressful situation. Its very common practice, it isn’t drugging the horse. These foals are perfectly fine, it took a day or two for them to chill out and be out in the pasture playing. It isn’t that deep just because Raleigh (who has no actual experience breeding or weaning foals) says it is.

      I think Katie's familes previous foals, sold on or kept have gone on to lead fruitful lives and even win shows. Any horses that are unfortunately injured, healed but can't be shown, if Mares, Katie usually uses as brood mares or surrogate mares, so she can keep them. The stallions, sold for stud or other jobs/pleasure horses. Every horse in Katie's and her parents barn are loved and have exemplary veterinary care and insurance. Therefore if it isn't broke, it doesn't need fixing. This has worked for years
      PS Vegans are the worst for seeing abuse where there is none. Please do not confuse nature with nurture

      Yes it does
      Stress isn’t a emotion only humans have, the fact that she prematurely gives ulcer guard bc she expects health problems due to her method should tell you everything about how terrible that method is
      Gradual weaning is way more humane

    Why not let them stay with their mother until they naturally wean? I’m trying to understand why they’re subjected to such stress that it requires medical intervention. I’m not familiar with breeders who separate foals from their mothers in such a traumatic manner. No offense intended I’m genuinely trying to understand.

    • @ramya2924
      @ramya2924 Год назад +24

      Ulcer guard is a preventative…ppl give it to their horses for when they travel or anything that can be deemed as somewhat stressful for any horse. Some mama horses never wean their baby, Phin’s mama would probably never wean him, she also mounts her and she does nothing abt it. Sometimes with domesticated horses, they need human intervention.

      Little late but some mares really won’t wean their foals. I have two that won’t even start trying to wean until the foal is over one. The two mares also don’t keep their weight well therefore I have to wean foals before winter

    • @Natilee_barrel-racing

      A lot of mares don’t wean their babies. They give the ulcer guard to help with stress.
