Ok everyone saying she needs to consider a different method doesn’t know her or what she’s tried. I know plenty of horses who’ve been weaned cold turkey (I own a mare who I guarantee was weaned that way) and she’s just fine. I will agree some foals are better off than others and will react better than others. There are so many factors that should be considered, colts can breed back to their dams, mares can loose weight, mare may not be producing enough milk, the foal may be stealing all the dams hay, etc. I have a foal that my vet said to wean at 3 months if my mare wasn’t gain and retaining weight because of her health. Vets won’t geld colts until a minimum of 6 months old but if you have a 3-4 month old Colt mounting his mare constantly there could be the possibility of him breeding his mare (which is a disaster waiting to happen genetically). Criticizing someone based off of another RUclipsr (who as far as I know has never bred a mare or bought a mare and foal combo) isn’t fair. You don’t know what conversations she’s had with her vet about weaning so you can’t judge. When I asked my vet about weaning my Colt he never suggested a method just a time period. My suggestion is to stick to your own business, educate yourself, and talk with your vet if your trying to wean a foal. Judging someone based of a 1-30 minute video isn’t fair. Do your own research and let others be. Harassing and repeating information (without doing your own thorough research and being able to provide said person with the research) will not make someone change if they don’t want to.
If it works for you and it is the only method you know doesn't mean it is right for the foals. Nothing wrong with a little research and more consideration for the horses.
@@margretemargrete11 research and consideration is great until you don’t have the means to do that. Again you can’t judge what she has done without being there 24/7. Which no one on this platform has as none of us are close friends or family. We are not her vet either.

As much as I adore your love for your foals, this is not a proper way of weaning. There is no “one good way” of weaning of course, but putting them away like that and in a confined space causes a lot of stress to them, and that stress lasts. Unfortunately, horses are easy to be traumatised and we want to limit this as much as possible ❤ the foals show visible distress. Before you ask me how long I have been breeding, I work at breeding facility for years now, the breeding facility is breeding for about 4-5 generations by now and has around 20 foals per year, I also consult and work with foals at different facilities where there are 1-5 foals a year, sometimes more. I’ve seen A LOT and I worked with hundreds of foals at this point. The difference is huge. Many people don’t understand just how huge and how many behaviours later in their life are caused by it. Please at least do your own research and consider other methods. All the best to you and your horses ❤

This is very much not how my barn does it, and their foals and moms are much more chill and seem pretty well-adjusted. I'm a bit concerned about the confined space, with all of them freaking out and running on top of each other? Would it be possible to have a different non-mom adult nearby, a horse they're familiar with, there to help them feel less alone and afraid? Kind of like an aunt or uncle to just be nearby and when they see that that horse is calm, maybe they'll be more calm? I'm just a hobby rider but I feel like that might make things easier for them, emotionally. And less dangerous if they're not flailing and running and thrashing inside a stall. :S
did you skip the part where she actually put her old horse Bo outside the stall so the babies could touch nose with him and be more calm? I'm not defending her ways of doing things but pay attention before commenting
It's already been commented, but they did have another older horse there to calm them down. Bo is always put with the babies to calm them down. Katie's family have been doing this for years. And these little babies are happy and healthy. They had a stressful day or two, but are now okay. Instead of dragging it out and putting them through several days of trauma like others have suggested. This is the method Katie's family have used for a long time, and it works for them.

Why not let them stay with their mother until they naturally wean? I’m trying to understand why they’re subjected to such stress that it requires medical intervention. I’m not familiar with breeders who separate foals from their mothers in such a traumatic manner. No offense intended I’m genuinely trying to understand.
Ulcer guard is a preventative…ppl give it to their horses for when they travel or anything that can be deemed as somewhat stressful for any horse. Some mama horses never wean their baby, Phin’s mama would probably never wean him, she also mounts her and she does nothing abt it. Sometimes with domesticated horses, they need human intervention.
Little late but some mares really won’t wean their foals. I have two that won’t even start trying to wean until the foal is over one. The two mares also don’t keep their weight well therefore I have to wean foals before winter

I know this isn’t about Winston but he cracked me up! He’s such a cute “little” pig lol. Also Bo is like “hi. I’m here….again” lmao 🤣 Bo is the best they could ask for!
I’ve watched other breeders use this weaning technique and it always seems to work well. It always helps to have a buddy
Sadly it’s the worst technique because causes a lot of stress like a lot and causes physiological damage
just because something works doesnt mean its right
Thank you for sharing, you are a great narrator 😊they are all so adorable but that Winston is so chilled and cute.
You need apple trees so that way you'll have apples for the horses
I'm just glad Finn missed the boobs with those flying hooves
Winston just kills me.
I think that’s the first time we’ve ever heard Mrs. Katie curse! 😮 warranted yes but I love the babies ❤
Omg I LUV THIS BEAUTIFUL WOMAN
You have the most amazing farm and cutest animals..I ❤️ them all..Wish I was closer to help you out
11:42 Penelope is huge, compared to the boys, Finn & Peter. Gorgeous but big girl❤
Petey was like, "Man! I don't want to go in there with that crazy kid!"
Poppy and petunia are just soooo cute and funny 😂❤
Love that Winston ❤
Some day i hope to be a horse girl just like you and im so grateful for the videos you do! Thank you for showing what its like and making me feel like im part of the group! ❤
I don't get it. Don't horses wean their own kids?
Petey is like I'm not going in there with him🤣🤣
Why not let them stay with their mother until they naturally wean?
A lot of mares don’t wean their babies. They give the ulcer guard to help with stress.
I would personally not because the foals will stay with their mother until they are manually weened
These mares are broodmares. They are going to get bred again.
Katie Finn is so beautiful!!
Katy I absolutely love your laugh/giggle.. Also your mini farm is my life goal! 😍
I love Winston’s cameos lol also the guy who helps you with the horses in the video is amazing! He’s so in control and calm with the horses
Great job! Always go by the signs!😊❤
I think the signs of don't take my mom away was very clear. It was too early. So sad.
@@Deanekelsand the signs of stress! 😳
