Terrific video, direct and straight forward without a lot of gabbing. Saves me time and money purchasing more than what is needed. Thank you, great video. I learn a lot from these videos.
My God... No introduction about promoting your channel, no background story about the toilet, no plea to "Like and Subscribe"... This is the most selfless and helpful video I have ever seen on RUclips. I love your video edits and cuts. I've liked and subscribed!
The best video for this repair EVER!!! Has everything you need to know and is concise. Some other videos on this ramble on forever - yada yada yada. Not this one. You will be be repaired and off to fun things in no time!
You're so right! One guy took 20 minutes to show us this and instead of turning off the water supply with a twist of a valve, he uses a shoe string to hold the valve up. What??? This a great, concise video!
Doing some research I found several places that told me to call a professional to do this because the tank needs to be taken off.. You just showed me how to do it in less than 2 minutes with the tank on!! Thank you a million times!!
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial. It took me 5 minutes to do. The seal was still in good shape, so it only needed to be re-situated. The best part is that I didn't have to spend any money on parts, or worse, on a plumber to do something so simple!
Wonderful, straightforward, informative video on how to change a Kohler Canister flush valve seal! Took me about 5 min. to do so! Once I figured out how to remove the canister, changing the seal took less than 20 seconds. I probably spent most of the time trying to disconnect the chain hook and reconnect it! Thank you for saving me time and money!
Thanks a million. Tank was leaking for a long time. A quick trip to hardware store & $9 later for a seal and one review of your video, leak is now fixed & wife is happy. Best
Additional input: You can try cleaning that seal (and the ring it sits on when it is closed) with a dish washing brush. Water deposits collect on both and scrubbing them off sometimes works. You can also remove that rubber seal, flip it over and re-install it so you have a brand new side facing downward. They are reversible! That worked for me after cleaning it eventually became ineffective. If none of that works just pay the $7 for a new gasket and follow the gentleman's instructions. I use Clorox toilet tablets in the tank and I'm told they can eat away at the flushing mechanism, but to me it's worth it to have a little bleach in the water with every flush. It prevents bowl stains and makes the whole bathroom smell clean. If that means I have to replace the gasket a little more often so be it. As you can see by the video it is super easy and takes all of two minutes :)
Another tip... mine apparently was very old and crusty, and when I tried turning it counterclockwise it didn't budge, and felt like it would break if I tried any harder. Living in the country and being over an hour from the home store, I wasn't willing to risk that. I just disconnected the flush handle chain and removed and installed the new seal with the flush valve in place. The seal easily stretched enough to be worked around the flush valve cylindircal body.
I want to thank you so much for helping me. My husband died last year and I am facing these chores by myself. I’m in my 70s but I think I’m 40. I got a universal kit from lowes but no my unit had to be different. I’ve ordered the seals on line. 😉👍
Thank you so much for this clear and concise video. I have been putting up with two Kohler toilets that constantly fill from what I am sure is just the seal. You just saved me the cost of calling a plumber, or the thought of trying to replace the entire assembly when it isn't needed. Awesome!

Simple and to the point. Another guy (and I know he meant well) had a 20 minute drawn out video. I almost fell asleep half way through his video. Yours, short and sweet. Thanks
Thank you. My toilet looks to be the same model (comes apart at base vs top) so this video saved me $50 by doing it myself vs. having a plumber come out. I had tried using other videos but those show just the top coming off so was reluctant to try a lot of pressure and possibly break the stem. One hint - lift the canister up and take hold of the stem at the base and twist instead of grabbing the top or reaching into the canister. I did that and mine popped right out.
I can honestly say this is probably the best home improvement related video I've ever seen. I was able to switch out the valve seal in basically the time it took to watch the video. Sir, thank YOU for this posting.... It probably saved me from replacing the whole Toilet.... Which has not been used lately.... Reinserted to old seal for a temporary fix ....
Jacy, thanks so much for outlining this simple procedure. I'm pretty handy, but I had no idea how to do the flush valve seal. Our toilet has been leaking about 2 years, and the seal has been sitting here waiting to be installed. I thought I probably had to remove the tank to replace the seal, LoL! I was a little embarrassed after you showed how easy it is to replace, which took all of about 1 minute! You're gifted and resourceful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much for the video! it's so helpful.I know how to replace the seal, however I couldn't figure out how to take off the center piece.after watching the video,it only took me five minutes to fix both toilets.thank you, thank you!!
Thank you! Quickly and clearly showed me how to reseat the seal that had come off. Didn't even need a new seal - just properly reposition the one already there.
You are awesome! You have helped me fix so many little things that I otherwise would not have been able to do. You are concise and succinct without leaving anything important out - thank you for your videos, I really appreciate them
I could not figure out how to remove the canister, was very tight and didn't want to break the plastic. Your video showed right way and was able to change out in less than 5 minutes. Thanks!
I had the seal on my Kohler go on me. Wasting water with a slow leak. $10 for a new one! So what I did was cleaned of the canister, soaked it in CLR for a while and brushed it and let it dry (blow gun). Then I took a sour cream container, cut a hole in the bottom for the center piece and coated it with dish soap. Ran a bead of silicone around the base of the canister then set it on top of the bottom of the container with the soap. Let it sit for an hour or so and removed it. Reinstalled it and working like a charm!
Thanks very much for the helpful video! You made this seem straightforward. I like the way you put this together - just the facts, step-by-step, no floofiness. Great job!
Never saw this type of valve before and I just opened the toilet to replace since toilet keeps refilling. Happy I checked here, looks like a very easy job (for once). Props on the well edited quick video.

Great video advice. Just replaced gasket on our tank. I would add two steps. One, make sure the parts are free of fragments from the old gasket. I gently removed these with a rough-sided sponge. Two, I used a shop wet-vac to remove the sludge/particles that accumulate in the bottom of the tank. You can remove them with a small cup, rag, sponge, etc. if you do not have a shop vac. A flashlight was useful checking on the old gasket and sludge particles being removed. Job took about 20 minutes.
So helpful! Normally, I’d have spent $100 having someone come fix an issue like this. After watching this video, it was a simple 5 minute fix! Thank you!
Thanks. This video saved me an expensive call to the plumber. I also wiped down the hard plastic surfaces to get rid of the mineral deposits. Hardest part was getting the clip unfastened and fastened; I had to use a pair of needle nosed pliers for that.
Excellent instructional video! I was able to replace the seal on the flush valve by watching and pausing the video along the way! Easy to buy the correct seal!
Allow me to add to the multiple thank you’s here. Saved me the money I would’ve paid a plumber. Went to Home Depot got the middle part and replaced it myself. Appreciate it sir!
Great instructional video, short and to the point. I would suggest to attach the chain first before you insert the canister - it gives you have more room to work.
This was so helpful! I was dreading calling a plumber at the worst, or ordering parts at best. Didn't have to do either!! Such a simple fix. (My valve seal had just come loose, it wasn't damaged or corroded.) Thank you thank you thank you!
Obtaining the model number that is printed on the inside of the fill tank, I got the two-pack seal and installed it like you instructed. No more phantom flushes! Thank you!
Im a grandma & not that mechnically inclined! Great instructions..thanks for no long bs..I wasnt sure how to turn the stem part & was trying to turn off the very tip piece..ha! Once you revealed it turned off at the bottom it worked perfectly!
I have a toilet like this, and the cannister also doesn't seem to drop immediately after flushing? Is something I can also repair without removing my tank and replacing the large seal at the base of the tank?
Thank you for the video. All I needed to know what how to get that cylinder out and it wasn't obvious. I didn't want to apply too much of the wrong thing and brake it. Knowing to turn the center part was key. The rest was obvious as to what was needed. Thank you thank you!
Thank you so much. I'm disabled and this was easy for me. Don't even think I need to buy a new seal. I just reattached the old seal. Saved mt mother maybe hundreds.
Thank you! This video is very concise and easy to follow. My Kohler canister flush valve took the Kohler GP1059291 seal, a yellow seal that replaces the original red one.
0:39 If I hadn't found your video, at this particular moment in this process, I would have snapped the center stem of that canister flush valve in half in a fiery fit of rage. Subscribed and liked. Thanks!
Thanks for a great video! I am curious if there are other folks on here, who have issues with the seals becoming leaky due to the use of chlorine tabs in the water tank.
I went from thinking "I have to go to Home Depot after work today" to "I just fixed my toilet" in 5 minutes. 2 of those minutes were spent watching your video. Thank you.
Great video, thank you!!! I didn’t realize the seal just pops off/on. I was about to take a screwdriver to try to force off the black plastic cap on bottom. You saved me from my own idiocy!
Nice video! So I replaced the canister seal gasket as well as the entire fill valve mechanism however I noticed the canister won’t shut completely(using flush handle)causing the water to still flow and not fill up to the line. Only when I manually pull up the canister will it seal and fill. What’s my next step?
The video is helpful. Having some issues with some finger dexterity, I found that I was able to change out the seal without disconnecting the hook! The hook would have been a nightmare for me to get off and put back on!!!
As has been said before here, THANK YOU very much for this helpful video. It saved me breaking something. Took under two minutes from start to finish! Great video!
Outstanding video, thanks. I had a plumber tell me he needed to remove the tank from the bowl to replace the ring.. I was able to fix it myself almost as quick as the video.
Thank you for specifying that the part could be red or yellow. I bought the yellow and worried it wasn't the right one until I saw your video. The only thing now, is turning on the water again. It's rumbling. What do I do? Thank you so much.
And THAT'S how you do a video. No unnecessary gabbing, no crappy music, no B.S. Great info. Subscribed.
Thanks

Great instructional video, short and to the point. I would suggest to attach the chain first before you insert the canister - it gives you have more room to work.
Thanks.

I have a toilet like this, and the cannister also doesn't seem to drop immediately after flushing? Is something I can also repair without removing my tank and replacing the large seal at the base of the tank?
This is one of the BEST videos ever! Thank you for giving me the confidence to do this. 🙌🏼

Thank you for the video. All I needed to know what how to get that cylinder out and it wasn't obvious. I didn't want to apply too much of the wrong thing and brake it. Knowing to turn the center part was key. The rest was obvious as to what was needed. Thank you thank you!

What if when you try to turn it clockwise it seems stuck? I don’t want to twist the center rod/top head piece and have the rod snap off by accident
Thank you! Well done video, and the instructions are spot on! In less than 10 minutes I replaced seals in both bathrooms.

Has a plumbing contractor I always use a towel to clean the seat (where the gasket mates too) just to make sure it’s good and clean
0:39 If I hadn't found your video, at this particular moment in this process, I would have snapped the center stem of that canister flush valve in half in a fiery fit of rage. Subscribed and liked. Thanks!

Nice video! So I replaced the canister seal gasket as well as the entire fill valve mechanism however I noticed the canister won’t shut completely(using flush handle)causing the water to still flow and not fill up to the line. Only when I manually pull up the canister will it seal and fill. What’s my next step?
Thank you for such a great video! You helped me so much. Took only a few minutes to be back in business!! Jesus bless you.
