I can't believe how lucky we are that we get to see these classic Nightwish songs sung by the goddess Floor. If they redone all of their albums with Floor singing them, I'd buy the lot! 😍🤘
I've heard it said that this song is about the music press who apparently were being critical of Tuomas's songwriting. Not sure. Nightwish had only recently come through a rough patch where Tuomas considered disbanding the group. They fired their original bassist, Sami Vänskä. Emppu was unhappy, feeling like he was just a "hired gun." It was also at about this time Tarja claims that from her perspective things started going downhill for her and the band. Not a fun time.
What a reaction, Kelly! From one emotion to another, awesome.Great to see the audience involved and the intense playing of Tuomas. No wonder they like the South American tour when they get such a reaction from the public.
I love how they gave Emppu more camera time in this show. I watched it last night. They stopped 2-3 times to thank the crowd for the energy they were feeding the band. Gonna watch it again here in a few minutes. It's so good!🤘👍
Well, Emppu had a lot more to do on those early albums. They were mostly very technical and he really shone as a guitarist. In the last few records his role has diminished to just chugging along to the rhythm while occasionaly being allowed to do a solo. I don't want to sound crappy about it, but the simple fact is that Tuomas has become more interested in the orchestration and thematic elements of Nightwish than the riffing and metal. Where back in the day he was chasing technical power metal bands like Stratovarius.
Another great Nightwish song...aren't they ALL though? I've read in the comments that Tarja's singing of this song in The End Of An Era DVD is excellent too...I must check that out ASAP haha! I'm curious as to how different that version is with the more operatic style of Tarja. I really enjoy not only the playing skills of Nightwish, but also their "performance"...they really put on a show, don't they? Cheers!
Tarja's a killer, just like Floor. Different styles, but both stunning. I love Floor so much, but in this song, I prefer Tarja's End of an Era performance.
One reason it's always good to come back to your reaction channel IS that you go as far as needing to regain composure :) Don't be too shamed of your deep reactions. I guess it makes you feel a bit vulnerable. But for us, you're like a guide who goes first, and lead us others live those emotions too. When you feel deeply, you make us feel deeply - simply as that :) Thank you, and my respects.
I love the fact that you always analyse the lyrics as well. To me this seems to have a connection to The Poet and the Pendulum. There were various emotions, mainly desperation, even anger. I spotted pendulums in the background too.
I wonder if this song has something to do with Poet and the Pendulum. In the live version of PATP there is this video of a pendulum swinging back and forth on the screen in the background. I see that same pendulum in this video, but covered with a lot of fire.
It has in a way, because it's about Tuomas' angry feelings when writing songs for Century Child album after kicking out their original bassist. He felt his friend betrayed him. This album has a lot of dark lyrics because of that.
I noticed that too. But the Poet And The Pendulum is from a later date. This one is from Century Child, The Poet And The Pendulum is from Dark Passion play which is two albums later. I think it is just an elegant re-use of the original visuals, possibly because it is fitting the atmosphere like KekeFinn described.
Hello hello hello hello hey Kelly I hope you are doing well. Let's performance is amazing. By the way I love your paintings. I would be honored to hang one on my wall. I am back to watch your reactions to nightwish. So keep on keepin on
Kelly, have you watched any of the long-form Nightwish documentaries yet; either 'End of Innocence' or 'Please Learn the Setlist in 48 Hours'. Both offer extraordinary looks into the strange, insular world of Nightwish.
I was just saying in the Tarja video that she sings this song better than Floor. But the fact is, they both sung different parts better. I like the personality and the character that floor adds to the verses, and I like how strong Tarja's voice is toward the end of the song in the second half. Floor just has so many different colours that she can add to her voice, different things that she can do to sound different. Tarja can still tell the story without all those colours though. However, Floor doesn't have as strong of a head voice as Tarja.
Awesome review, Kelly! This is my go-to Nightwish song when I need to blow off steam. The commenters' explanations of the story behind this song are pretty accurate from what I've read. The band was falling apart and Tuomas was at his wits' end, and a verbal attack on him by someone resulted in him writing this song. Metaphorically, Tuomas was the dreamer and he was being slayed. BTW, the versions with Tarja (both on the album and live) are VERY different vocally and you should check those out as well. Beautiful aurora painting! We are kindred spirits here as my husband and I share your love of the aurora. We travel to Alaska, Iceland and Scandinavia for aurora photography.
@@AnthonyElsom I didn`t mean "Tarja was better". There are some songs where Floor is better and some with Tarja. That one sung by Tarja has some additional power. Floor siging it less operatic. Generally Kelly may compare both versions...
@@draagnipur8767 I hear you and yes, I don't just think it was power and operatic vocals on Tarja's side, but a certain 'bounce back" in her presentation of this song that I like..(if that makes any sense). as for listening through the album, her vocals become tedious and repetitive and samey ...after a couple of replays..2013 Wacken, however I have listened to countless times and still do..Anyway, let Kelly do her thing with Floor, main thing is not to mention Tarja at all these days in a NW reaction...unless you want a whole boring debate, which I hate, since it's just the same stuff over and over..
I've read that this was written regarding Tarja's relationship with Marcello and her starting to distance herself from the band. Don't know if that's right or not but it seems to make sense with the lyrical themes in the song.
@@jimharris367 No, the songs for Century Child were written before the band even knew Marcelo. And why would Tarja sing a song about him? It's from the time when the original bassist quit and Tuomas almost disbanded Nightwish. He went hiking in the mountains with a friend Tony Kakko to collect his thoughts and decided to continue. The whole album is about rebirth (Century Child), Tuomas losing his blue-eyed innocence by been betrayed by his friend (End of Innocence). Many songs of the album has this thematic.

Thomas's song writing is entirely individual thing he writes how he feels....
@@balticstain7150 He is a total genius. His ability to put emotion into music and lyrics is astonishing.
Hey Kelly, they released a new one from the Decades album, Élan live from Buenos Aires

I got goosebumps all over, when Tuomas did the fist hammering in the heavy-instrumental section..... Shows how much this means to him..

Now Slaying the dreamer with Tarja!
I adore your appreciation for every aspect of their songs!!!
First thing i have to say is that i'am glad your loving this music age is not putting you off thank you .....
I really can´t believe you´re crying to this song
Good song, but check out them performing this on the 'End Of An Era' show ( with Tarja ) just amazing... You will love it...
This song must be heard performed by Tarja from the concert End of an Era👍👍👍

This is a very angry song, with Tuomas lashing out at the media and the haters who attacked the band after they became successful.
Why are you cry in every number instead of just rocking? :-)
I love Floor but this one you should listen to with Tarja (End of Era). Tarja sang that song outstanding.
