I've enhanced the partial recording that exists of the 1976 Week 8 Chargers at Steelers game. I upscaled the picture, doubled the framerate, and denoised and sharpened the picture with Topaz, then used Resolve to MAJORLY adjust the contrast and color. You can see the before/after shots here -- imgbox.com/g/WWS2DNPafb -- My thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVD file for this project.
Watched a lot of Dan Fouts when he was a very respected QB in the 1980s. Even though I grew up in the 70s, I didn't get to see a lot of his early career living on the east coast. To see any early Dan Fouts is a real treat. Thanks Dave. A well deserved HOFer that should of had a shot in a Super bowl with those classic Air Coryell teams.
Expert use of existing film footage to enhance game perspective. The film script perfectly meshed seamlessly with the existing game telecast footage. Glad this one still had the NBC sports NFL intro as an opening tag. "Views" spinning like a slot machine already!
@@RGZ112 I do not have that game. I also looked around at others who collect as well, and it seems no one has that one in available circles. This game was surely only shown regionally. The Rams at Oilers 1PM EST and the Cowboys vs Cardinals 4PM EST were the doubleheader headline games that week. I wish there were more 1970's games around.
After a dismal 1-4 start , it was nearly impossible to score on the Steelers. They gave up 28 points total in their next 9 games. Possibly the greatest defensive run ever.
Dan Fouts took his lumps in the early mid 70s by being benched by James Harris and Johnny Unitas until the Chargers got the key offensive components to make him a Hall Of Fame quarterback in the late 70s and early 80s.
Agreed. Would've been VERY interesting to see what would've happened had both Franco and Rocky not gotten hurt in the playoff game against the Colts before losing to Oakland with a stifled offense.
Been a Steelers fan for 30+yrs. To me it's their best team ever and even Art Rooney stated that. They would need to contend with the 1998 Vikings and 1967 Colts
No doubt they would dominate the 1968 Colts. I give the 1976 Steelers a slight edge in they played 1998 Vikings in today's rules. If they played under 1976 rules where you can touch a defenders more than five yards byond the line of scrimmage, the Steelers would overpower them. Pittsburgh's secondary would manhandle the Vikings receivers.

I really wanted to compliment Gerela for making all of his kicks. But no, the box score says he missed the PAT on the last TD. Maybe it wasn't his fault, who knows. That play isn't in this video.
I am not sure if and when this incident allegedly even happened. But I remember hearing that sometime in the mid 1970s when Tommy Prothro was the head coach of the San Diego Chargers; they were playing the Pittsburgh Steelers and before the game......Coach Prothro supposedly told his Charger team that they (and I am NOT using his exact words) didn't have much of a chance to beat the Steelers. But that they should still go out and play hard and lose with as much dignity as possible.
Well, I amassed my entire NFL Films collection (close to 2000 films on DVD) over the past 7 years via trades and purchases with third parties and also directly from NFL Films. That particular show is up on RUclips though, along with many others -- ruclips.net/video/w55uj5XpyJk/видео.html
Not to my knowledge. It's a miracle that this footage exists, considering it's an NBC broadcast. Not a lot of games exist from NBC of any duration prior to about 1978 or so.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 yep, you caught that too?! During the punt return early in the clip, Dawson, excitedly sounded very much like Brodie. That’s what threw me off. But yes. It’s Simpson and Dawson, no Brodie.
@@michaelskurski912 iirc this was his first season doing games for NBC and in this clip he sounded subdued, which made many of us think it was someone else. Which in context makes sense, in later years with Charlie Jones, his voice and inflections definitely were higher. Presumably because he found his footing as an analyst.
Only 134 yards total offense in this game. But you must remember, this was during that amazing run in which the Steelers allowed only 28 total points in the last 9 games (after "Turkey" Jones dumped Bradshaw on his head in week 5, and he was in and out of the lineup after that). Although with all those dropped INT's by SD and being up only 3-0 going into the 4th quarter, the Steelers were kinda lucky to win this one, with Reggie Harrison and Rocky Bleier carrying the load as Franco sat out the second half, and Swann and Stallworth did not play at all.

@@danyluk1 Very pleased you are enjoying the project!
You have a great collection of old NFL videos. Do you happen to have a copy of the 1978 Green Bay and San Diego game

It’s always nice to see the original Steel Curtain at their ferocious best, another great job

Classic brought to life again. I enjoy watching these games again. Memory Lane is full of magic football memories. Thanks Dave!
Great find. Any enhanced footage from the era of the 1970’s is very much appreciated.
NBC Sports NFL opening. Jim Simpson calling the game. What a treat this is.

That NBC NFL theme and open gives me chills every time!
Wild to see guys score a really nice touchdown and then just run straight back to the bench. No playing to the crowd. Just back to the bench.
Great find Dave… Keep showing the Super Steelers from 74-79.
Awesome as always 😇👍🙂
Jim Simpson was a treat to listen to!
As a longtime Charger fan this is pure gold!!

To me, the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers are the greatest team never to reach the Super Bowl. Their defense was just incredible.

Jim Simpson and Len Dawson on the call

This is a good example of why Pittsburgh was so tough, early in 76 they beat themselves a couple of times but played like champions down the stretch

Where were Lynn Swann and John Stallworth?

Where did you find the nfl films footage?
The 1976 Week 8 episode of 'Pro Football Playback' which is what the weekly half-hour NFL Films highlight show was called that particular year.
Where can you get those
