The key is dropping the ball the exact sameway each time. I played 15 years of first class rugby and had to do it with both feed or while running full speed. It's all in the drop. When I was 13, I dropped the ball every night 40 to 50 times. My parents got anoid as I was supposed to be doing homework. So I started dropping it on my bed, haha. Anybody with some athleticism can do it once after trying for an afternoon. The difference is being able to do it 90% of your attempts while two 250 pound dudes are sprinting towards you.

One of my best friends growing up is a punter in the NFL. He actually got drafted by the Lions in like 2013 and went to college at Appalachian state and now he’s the bills punter. His name is Sam Martin. He’s a beast and been in the league for like 10-11 years now as a starter. Played for the lions most of his career but been with the bills a couple years now.
One day during football practice, our quarterback/punter, who went on to punt for Georgia Tech, shanked a kick that landed where the cheerleaders were practicing. The captain was about six feet tall and had amazingly long legs. She picked the ball up, held it sideways between her first fingers and sent a booming sideways punt all the way back to him.

I play a lot of disc golf, i knew exactly what he meant but in DG form.very very interesting that similar to a disk you can put enough spin and power into the ball getting that off axis torque which turns over it's flight. In theory it should turn out over extended flight. Very cool and really impressive. It takes a lot of power to turn over discs or clearly punts

If you are right footed tilt the front of the ball down and to the left a little and kick it with the right side of your right foot and it will spiral. I played football in school and had a great coach that showed me this trick and it would spiral every time. Im not left footed but i would assume the opposite tilt and kick would have the same effect
Even though I’m not a Sooners fan but my great-great grandfather Lloyd did so much for them and Oklahoma I still love the school and everyone and hang time just makes it better
In rugby, we have a similar kick in the torpedo. Hit correctly, it will give a lot more distance, but maybe not the necessary hang time for special teams to cause havoc.
College of Wooster in Ohio, mid-1980's. The team was pretty terrible (broke Marietta's longest losing streak in history, which was a bit of a lowlight) BUT it was fun to watch the punter, because he turned them over regularly. It was incredible to see because he'd do that maybe 3 or 4 times in a game. It was so satisfying to watch...and was pretty much the only thing to watch. Guy had a lot of opportunities to punt....
I punted for high school football. It is very difficult to turn over and be consistent. I learned to do it by kicking every single day for months. Rewarding.
The fact teams have specialists doing the kicking says it's not that easy. Being consistent, and being able to forget about a bad kick is what makes kickers different.
I used to kick for my Air Force team, had one that was 62 yards, line of scrimmage to the point where it landed, 55 yards was the usual well hit one, 45 was a bad one. If I could have done those 55 yard kicks at will, I'd have had something.
A lot of pro punters have turned to the "rugby" style punt. Its nuch harder to catch, good hangtime (not as good as the turnover obviously) and decent distance. Im very excited for the next breed of punters

In Aussie footy we call it a Torpedo or a Barrel, some of the biggest barrels being 80-90 meters (290 feet) long.
