    Hello there and welcome to my video. In today's video, I'm going to be almost entirely rebuilding my main file server/NAS. I built this NAS a while ago with the hopes of storing photos and audio on it, but then I got sucked into this whole RUclips thing. Since then, I've generated a massive amount of footage, considering the channel's age, and need to upgrade this system.

    Always interesting to see people tackle the power and front I/O headers differently.

    Used enterprise drives are a good cheap way to get some storage on the cheap. Some sellers even offer a 5 year warranty on the used drives.

    Your first nas is so much more reasonable than mine. I got a deal on a 16 core Xeon 1st gen scalable, with motherboard ,192gb of ram, psu and a 8 bay case. It’s so overkill.

      @blakecasimir 14 дней назад

      Power consumption will be pretty hefty. I wouldn't want to run that 24/7.

    Good call putting a fan on the hba those things will fry themselves without the screaming airflow of a normal server case.

    My media server is in a large 20 bay 4U chassis. Watching you build this has caused me to rethink my homelab rack. I am about to build a 2U download server that will run 24/7. It will run windows server 2022 and the only services that will run on it will be Qbittorent (for "linux iso's") and my Vpn. It won't need a large amount of storage because when the files are completed, I will let it seed for 24hrs then it will be transferred to my media server.

    Subbed...very awesome...LOVE seeing hacked wiring on DIY Home Server builds! Very nice...and I also really like OMV for simple home NAS setups...very lightweight and just works
    Keep em coming!!!!

    Neat looking build. Used SAS drives are the best way to expand your storage on a budget. I just picked up a bunch of 14TB drives for $85 each. Hoping my new build will solve my storage problems for a bit... 🤪

    • @CompHwTipsAndTutorials
      @CompHwTipsAndTutorials  8 дней назад +1

      Yeah, used drives just weird me out a little haha. I could probably do that if I add a little more redundancy and figure out a good way to properly back up the NAS, though.

    • @computersales
      @computersales 8 дней назад

      @@CompHwTipsAndTutorials yeah I get that. I've found when I was buying new drives they would either be DOA, die in a week, last 6 months, or last forever. Buying used just means I am past the 6 month period of wondering. 😅 If flash prices didn't skyrocket I would be working towards all flash for my primary storage. I am technically already there, but I like to keep utilization around 25% if possible. RIP $50 2TB drives... 😿

    Dell uses 2N3904 bipolar NPN transistors as temp.sensor connected to the MB 'connector 3', HP integrates it to the front IO module. ;)

    Hey man ive been here since almost day one and always enjoy ur videos just wanted to ask if you think you could do a series of videos on servers/homelabs and nas solutions how to set it up what you can do with them etc etc? I want to start my own but dont know what to do and how to do so really and cant find anyone else pleasant enough to listen to

      That idea's been floating around in my head for a little while, so I'd expect to see a video or two on that kind of stuff in the near-ish future! Also, I'm assuming you've likely already checked him out, but I really like Hardware Haven's channel for homelab stuff. Thank you for your support!

    Nice video thank you and a reasonable nas upgrade. Can explain (maybe in another video) why the write performance is so low? I was always under the assumption that raid 5 would increase read and write speed with the number of disks in the array.

    • @CompHwTipsAndTutorials
      @CompHwTipsAndTutorials  8 дней назад

      Thanks for the idea! I may do that at some point, but I'll sure have to do some reading up on RAID to do that. For the meantime, I'm sure there are some good videos from other creators on the topic!

    • @WillFuI
      @WillFuI 14 дней назад +2

      I believe that case has ventilation for the psu. U Can see at 4:34

    • @CompHwTipsAndTutorials
      @CompHwTipsAndTutorials  8 дней назад

      Yep, there are some vents on the case as @WillFul mentioned

  • @jeffnew1213
    @jeffnew1213 7 дней назад

    I am wondering why write speed is that of a single drive. With most RAID, data is written across all the disks, so the more spindles you have, the faster the writes. Same with reads, obviously.

      @CompHwTipsAndTutorials  8 дней назад

      I think it's just the camera angle, I've checked the footage/board, and it seems to be good. Though dying caps are definitely something that happens on these boards, I had to replace some caps in the stock power supply for the old NAS a couple months ago
