I absolutely adore Half In The Bag, Mike and Jay are great, but I find, more often than not, they kind of just agree on everything. There are exceptions, I thought the Solo episode had a great split POV with them and Rich, but most of time, Mike and Jay just goof on huge blockbusters.
Yeah it's called a podcast? Ever heard of it? They review movies all the time and there's thousands to choose from. Heck, you can find review shows on youtube. Have you been living under a rock?
Yes agree with you 100 percent. These two men made Saturday early evenings so enjoyable. I saw them both in person, at a Chicago Post Office, and Roger was having a package weighed, while Gene was waiting, and Gene looked over and smiled in a cheerful way. They both seemed really nice, even in a Post Office!
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...NOBODY's betta at tearing a film down like Siskel and Ebert....i fuk'n miss them sooooo much, no one can EVER replace them...i saw every movie in this video and they ain't lie about shit....
yup.. used to watch this all the time growing up in Chicago and I still remember the day when Gene died.. and then later on in the early 2000's Roger passed on too after his brave fight with cancer..
Glad to see both S&E recognized Dazed & Confused for the movie it was and would become. I considered it an instant classic the 1st time I saw it. It's just mainstream enough not be a 'cult' film but if you ask your friends if they've seen it at least half will say no.
The turn Macauley Culkin took in The Good Son shows his versatility as an actor. A Bronx Tale is an amazing film and it's a terrible shame that Lillo Brancato made such bad life choices that got him imprisoned later in life and My Girl is so sweet and the end is so damn sad that it's still hard for me to watch decades later.
I've seen Dazed 'n Confused multiple times and it never occurred to me that the hazing perpetrated by the upper class onto the freshmen can be seen as young people inheriting rituals and practices (a whole system really) that is not really of their making. And just as the fresh fish are forced to undergo these rites of passage, the graduates will be channeled through the peculiar and painful passages of the social system known as adulthood. Great take, thanks S&E!
I'm with S&E on The Good Son....that is to say, how in the hell could Kit Culkin have read that screenplay and said to himself, "Yeah, this is just the kind of movie I want my kids to be starring in. This role is just right for Mac." Probably Mac read it and saw it as an opportunity to do something different, more adult-oriented, but really, the people who were helping Mac to guide his career should've strongly advised him against playing that role. It hurt his image, badly.
its a haunting movie and very tragically sad, but he did play the role very well, but kids shouldnt play that role, but i guess he did do it greatly and i guess what he really needed was a role where he helped a scientist to build a time machine... i was refering to back to the future but yet, career choices could help too.... or just to go back in time and invest in apple or microsoft early on
i love when they shit on bad movies, thats when they shine. They are so articulate and blunt its hilarious, then again they shit on movies i love which I don't care for lol
I was 10 when this came out, and was hyped to see it because I thought an evil McCauley would be cool. The previews didn't hide the fact that it was a suspense/thriller/horror movie.
I think it's interesting how they didn't consider a simple movie socially acceptable. It just shows how tastes change. Their opinions are more about their own morality than the movie.
My only problem with S&E discussions about movies such as "A Bronx Tale" is that their arguments about mobsters and "regular" Italians make them both appear to accept the movie portrayals of these groups as fact--it's fiction.Apparently, their only exposure to many groups of people,is in the movies.
Well, Roger usually took the moral high ground when it comes to movies he really hated. They've included ethnic stereotypes (North), portrayals of teenage treatment of women (Porky's), or slasher movies (I Spit on Your Grave). Occasionally such topics can be done well with better scripts. In the case of "The Good Son", I think Gene's criticisms have more validity. In its own world, the movie was poorly written, with nobody acting with much common sense or logic, and we don't learn why Culkin behaves so evilly. That's why the movie was bad, IMO, and not because of the subject matter. I don't really blame Culkin or his agents for taking on a challenging role, but he needed a movie with a better script.
My big problem with The Good Son is that, just for the sake of the plot, nobody believes Mark about Henry when he's just so obviously evil. Are they telling me that an experienced child psychologist can't see through that little monster? And that Henry's parents never noticed anything odd about him before Mark came to stay with them? What about his teachers, his coaches? Psychopathy isn't the kind of thing you can turn on and off. If Henry really was that crazy, not just some people but _everybody_ would've seen it.
A Bronx Tale is a great movie, they were right about that film. I also agree with them on the Good Son, terrible film. If you want to see a fun movie with Maculay Culkin, stick to the first two Home Alone movies. My Girl was just okay.
Lol about the good son ebert it's not good for siskel: it's not good for anyone. These two were gold , you tube owes all the critic channels to these 2 pioneers. The best review they did is of red sonya.
I watched 4 movies from that show. " A good son" I watched more than twenty years ago (I was 12/13 years old) and I liked it, i have to review it. I love "Dazed and confused" (Linklater is one of my favourite directors), "Bopha" was ok (I saw it in the high school) and "A Bronx Tale" is really good. I love this show.
+godzillavkk give me an example of a child that was insane and cruel without suffering from some childhood traumatic event, then you would have a point.
jakob rhinehart Robert Tompson and and Jon Venables were both 10 when they kidnapped a two year old boy, tortured and abused him, and left him to die on a railroad track. They spent the next eight years in jail.
+godzillavkk that is a good example. but the boys did experience posttraumatic stress disorder, nightmares and flashbacks of the murder, which means they were not psychopathic like the good son.
+godzillavkk true, but i thought you meant that they are insane and cruel like the kid in the movie which isn't the case. i agree that the boys that kill that little kids did have some disturbing mental issues/behaviors but they did feel remorse for their actions.
Gene did something here that has always irritated me when he was talking about that Football film , i see people do it all the time with genre films. he basically said he didnt like it and Roger talks about some scene he did like and Gene says he saw the same thing done better in this other film about the same thing he just watched. just because one genre film is better doesnt mean other ones cant still be good. because a similar film was better doesnt mean another film cannot still be a good film. if you like something who wants to only have one of it.
the good son is the kind of film that could have improved its hard to watch culkin play a bad character had this film been made differently, it would have had been lighter and fun, still R, maybe a PG-13 , but on a level that a teen who apparently loves action pictures like die hard with bruce willis would want the dna of that film rubbed off on the good son had it gone in a more happier and positive route with characters that you actually root for
Siskel was hard to please. He was so often unimpressed. I usually side with Ebert, except I cant understand his notorious venomous hate for Tommy Boy. That movie is charming and still makes me laugh.
I agree. Funny thing as a teen, I agreed with Siskel more since I didn't know as much. But if you notice, enjoyable good movies are liked by Ebert but when both like it, they are often classics long remembered after.
well i think the good son probably could have been toned down to a PG-13 so that Mac culkin wasn't acting like he was being so disrespectful to elijah wood these are two wonderful actors that in my opinion, had the good son did get this film Toned down, it would have helped them realize they would have been in a children's film together, with other actors aiding them
-Dazed and Confused was really my school years as a teenager in the 90s. The guy captured teenagers so well even though I wasn't there in the 70s. The only thing that did not exist was the whole being slapped around bit. -The Good Son is not usually my type of stuff but it was a solid thriller. Roger could be so elitist and dismissive sometime: "I wonder for what people this movie was made for". The same that liked "the Hand that Rocks the Cradle". Women love this kind of stuff. The sort of true crime stuff, esp, involving children. Everytime it showed on TV, my mom was like transfixed to the screen. lol -Bronx Tale wasn't bad but it was recycled Italian street/crime with cliches. It was a bunch of stuff we had seen before and done better on Goodfellas, etc..The way the story is told hearing the narrator and so forth way pretty much rip-off from Goofellas. There was not much originality to the story.
+Johnny Skinwalker Interesting point about how women might like The Good Son I hadn't looked at it that way. You are way off on Bronx Tale, "stuff we had seen on Goodfellas" is a lazy opinion and not true.
Teenagers are teenagers regardless of what era they are fun. Everyone can relate to the teenagers in Linklatter films, Hughes films, and Nicholas Ray's Rebel Without a Cause.
I imagine the ideas to put Culkin in an adult movie or role so he wouldn’t be type cast as the cute home alone kid so he could have a career after his childhood but the movie just sucked and was gross. Broke the cardinal sin of film, never kill a dog.
@Respect/Walk so when you watch a movie you base it in what the actors have done in their personal life? For one I disagree with what Lillo Brancato was apart of but it happened long after the movie was made and he wasn't even the shooter for one thing. Another thing if a movie is good a movie is good what an actor who was in the movie did outside of the film in their life should have no bearing on if you watch the film lol. I cannot stand people like that.....like you.....fucking idiot lmao.
I love this show, but I don't like it when they talk about movies having moral responsibilities. I just don't believe that movies have any responsibility to anyone. Make whatever art you want.
Omar Epps is one of the worst actors in history. Every role he plays is that of some racist half assed athlete who has a low IQ. He's also a total racist and hypocrite in real life. Proud of being Black, but hates black women. What a pompous, ignorant SLOB.
6 months ago i would have been sympathetic to any circumstance that involved racism...however...the recent incidents involving the black community supporting first bloom-bug...who ran totally racist programs against nyc's blacks...and then the total embracing of senile joe biden...who not only was the most vocal supporter of racists in the entire dem party...but actually has fought his entire life to insure blacks and other minorities be put in jail....with no hopes beyond serving as harsh a sentence as possible. blacks embracing such men demonstrate that they are totally at ease with and do not believe racism against them to be a bad thing..other wise they would have voted for bernie sanders who chained himself to black women fighting for equal rights 50 years ago!... so..since racism is no longer an issue to blacks i would be pretty foolish to argue it is.... on the other hand....A BRONX TALE....is a good movie...i like the people .i like the dialogue and i understand what Sonny...is telling C....especially the part of "nobody cares"......that is the realization most people live their whole life never understanding.....then can never figure out ......why they feel so alone....
IT IS A GANGSTER Classic...Always thought Siskel was a jealous ANTI Catholic bigot. THIS IS A WELL Directed Movie by Martin Scorcese, well written, and well acted by ALL those involved; riveting. Ebert was right , great movie that has stood the test of time as a great story and movie. So many PTBs in Hollywood who "happen to be Jewish" and who fawned after fellow Jews in the biz "sometimes" unjustly ( Spielberg who I lioke but even Babe Ruth Struck out a few times, WEINTERIN the sexist predator PIG, etc.) FOR YEARS have attacked Catholic or non Jew genius directors. It would be years before OUT OF GUILT and growing public resentment that JEWISH dominated Hollywood finally was "forced" to give Scorcese the OSCAR/ Academy Award that he has truly deserved "arguably" at least 5-6 times! Ouch, but true. CASE CLOSED.
Bronx tale was excellent.Robert Deniero does well with this type of stereotypical role.any roles where he has to play against type(another words any character that isn't like himself in real life he not good at.).like parts that require the actor to add an intelligent angle and portrayal to the part/role/character,he is not convincing etc......
That was enjoyable I was just listening and realize how much Siskel & Ebert are missed. Too bad there's no longer a show like this anymore
There is, it's called Half In The Bag.
I absolutely adore Half In The Bag, Mike and Jay are great, but I find, more often than not, they kind of just agree on everything. There are exceptions, I thought the Solo episode had a great split POV with them and Rich, but most of time, Mike and Jay just goof on huge blockbusters.
@@RetrocadePodcast It's a good show but a little too low brow and snarky. I appreciate the sincerity of Siskel and Ebert.
Yeah it's called a podcast? Ever heard of it? They review movies all the time and there's thousands to choose from. Heck, you can find review shows on youtube. Have you been living under a rock?
@@blinksstayfresh2524 not the same.
Who else is here for the Bronx Tale review.
Vanessa Allmon Me
Yup
A bronx tale. My favorite mob/drama and favorite DeNiro movie ever.
A Bronx Tale is a remarkable movie
I miss these guys. This show was so much fun.
One thing about Ebert is when he disagreed with Gene he always made sure we all knew he would tell Gene (and us) why.
I don't know about anyone else but I sure miss these guys... They were so fun to watch and eloquent ... Taken too early for sure
yup.. used to watch this all the time growing up in Chicago and I still remember the day when Gene died.. and then later on in the early 2000's Roger passed on too after his brave fight with cancer..
Anthony Baruch Ebert did not die in the early 2000's. He died in April 2013
Yep, even when I thought they were totally wrong, I always loved watching them.
..ebert was the best ..RIP
This time period for movies was just amazing!
C walks up to Sonny's casket. "How you doin Sonny?"
Sonny, lying there dead, "..........................................."
C " not so good huh?"
"Ok...well...that's high-powered criticism" -- I love how sarcastic these two guys could be with each other.
I loved watching these guys. They were classy, and intelligent. Even if I didn't see eye to eye with them all the time.
The two smartest unpretentious cinema critics to grace the business. Miss these guys.
back when movies mattered..these guys were great.
Glad to see both S&E recognized Dazed & Confused for the movie it was and would become. I considered it an instant classic the 1st time I saw it. It's just mainstream enough not be a 'cult' film but if you ask your friends if they've seen it at least half will say no.
A Bronx Tale is a masterpiece
I used to think that too. Saw it recently and found it below average.
A masterpiece? Gimme a break! It's alright but it ain't no Goodfellas.
Ctfo
A Bronx Tale is over rated garbage.
Fenrir It’s not as good as Goodfellas, but it’s not overrated garbage either.
Man I miss these guys!
DAZED AND CONFUSED SHOULD BE IN THE VIDEO TITLE!
God, do I miss Siskel & Ebert!! Rottentomatoes is more convenient but just doesn't compare
After listening to Ebert spit absolute VENOM about Good Son, I wanted so badly for Siskel to say he liked it.
Gene and Roger do 'very' well here with their review of Good Son. I mean what they say makes perfect sense.
..the program.. under rated movie.. and a bronx tale is a master piece
AFTER reading Eberts book which is very good.....i was totally convinced that he has ZERO prejudice .....something very rare.

Didn't know Morgan Freeman directed a movie before
blinkzone1 yes that by the way is what led to the end of the Arsenio Hall show.
I'm with S&E on The Good Son....that is to say, how in the hell could Kit Culkin have read that screenplay and said to himself, "Yeah, this is just the kind of movie I want my kids to be starring in. A Bronx Tale is a top 3 favorite movie of mine. I hate that Sonny died in the end, otherwise it's a great film.
Yes, but Sonny's death also created one of the best scenes in the movie with C and Lorenzo in the funeral home, so conflicted there.
Great episode.
i love when they shit on bad movies, thats when they shine. They are so articulate and blunt its hilarious, then again they shit on movies i love which I don't care for lol
It’s a movie, it doesn’t have to be so realistic!!
I was 10 when this came out, and was hyped to see it because I thought an evil McCauley would be cool. The previews didn't hide the fact that it was a suspense/thriller/horror movie.
I really miss them😔
Misleading title as it covers all the movies in the original episode
Such great guys and talents and miss them 💯
Funny thing is as a kid I found My Girl to be more traumatizing when Culkin’s character dies.
I love this show and miss their opinions very much. I happen to agree with them both about the concerns they had about " The Good Son".
To war guild--re-name this page. SISKEL & EBERT--"Dazed and Confused, A Bronx Tale & The Good Son 1993." Specify. But thanks for everything anyway!!!
The Program baby!
G | F| U | A Bronx Tale, [1993] Score: 5.3984 Fine performances by Chazz and DeNiro. So many fast forward moments, difficult to break six
I think it's interesting how they didn't consider a simple movie socially acceptable. It just shows how tastes change. Their opinions are more about their own morality than the movie.
I selected a Video about Law and Order and I got this Siskel and Ebert Video instead??!!
Ha. I still love Good Son.
Hey Mark, Don't Fluck with me - Macauley Culkster-
My only problem with S&E discussions about movies such as "A Bronx Tale" is that their arguments about mobsters and "regular" Italians make them both appear to accept the movie portrayals of these groups as fact--it's fiction.Apparently, their only exposure to many groups of people,is in the movies.
I missed these two.
Crazy they both good
the program as well
You ever look deep into the eyes of a recording of a person that's dead and think about inevitability?
It’s got the “black love story” [The Program]. That used to be ok to say. Not sure why, but it was.
"Reprehensible"..? Roger Ebert never pulled a punch in his life. he'd tell you if the film had a few cheap thrills but was 'overall' bad for society.
The program was awwwful. A rare instance when I agree with Gene over Roger.
If Henry really was that crazy, not just some people but _everybody_ would've seen it.
clifford shafran i felt as though i needed a hot bath after just hearing Roger say the words 'I Spit on Your Grave!'
His father deserves the blame.
Back when reviews were reviews. Nowadays, all you get is two parakeets and an idiot.
Can I get the Siskel and Ebert Theme song on a loop?
A Bronx Tale is a great movie, they were right about that film. I also agree with them on the Good Son, terrible film. If you want to see a fun movie with Maculay Culkin, stick to the first two Home Alone movies. My Girl was just okay.
The good son is a good movie, heck all these movies are good
This film is Robert DeNiro. It's who he is. A accepting guy who believes like I do that however flawed we are worthy of God.
Well I think The Good Son is a solid movie and it shows a sad truth in the world. There are children who are insane and cruel.
+godzillavkk give me an example of a child that was insane and cruel without suffering from some childhood traumatic event, then you would have a point.
jakob rhinehart
Robert Tompson and and Jon Venables were both 10 when they kidnapped a two year old boy, tortured and abused him, and left him to die on a railroad track. They spent the next eight years in jail.
+godzillavkk that is a good example. but the boys did experience posttraumatic stress disorder, nightmares and flashbacks of the murder, which means they were not psychopathic like the good son.
jakob rhinehart
All the things you mentioned can link to insanity.
+godzillavkk true, but i thought you meant that they are insane and cruel like the kid in the movie which isn't the case. i agree that the boys that kill that little kids did have some disturbing mental issues/behaviors but they did feel remorse for their actions.
I wonder if A Bronx Tale is like Romeo and Juliet or more like West Side Story.
🤔
Gene did something here that has always irritated me when he was talking about that Football film , i see people do it all the time with genre films. he basically said he didnt like it and Roger talks about some scene he did like and Gene says he saw the same thing done better in this other film about the same thing he just watched. just because one genre film is better doesnt mean other ones cant still be good. because a similar film was better doesnt mean another film cannot still be a good film. if you like something who wants to only have one of it.
1:31 Roger, did you see *Mikey* the year before? And what about *The Bad Seed?*
We should send John Wick to teach that boy a lesson!
The Good Son is a good thriller, reminiscent to The Bad Seed which the guys don't mention
+dnasty312 the bad seed was a much better film
I agree
Good Son is fucking great
Ya gotta be kidding me
wasent the program on the news for sum reason?
If I let you go you think you can fly
Sneak Previews
"all the seniors have to paddle the juniors" .... well, no. But close.
Why are they dressed the same?
i enjoyed the good son
I always thought ebert was a better reviewer than siskel
Man they really were spoiling movies lol where was the warning.
the good son is the kind of film that could have improved
its hard to watch culkin play a bad character
had this film been made differently, it would have had been lighter and fun, still R, maybe a PG-13 , but on a level that a teen who apparently loves action pictures like die hard with bruce willis would want the dna of that film rubbed off on the good son had it gone in a more happier and positive route with characters that you actually root for

and to think Culkin always do those pranks on the burglars in Home Alone
Sonny became a criminal in real life.
Gene is too serious a lot of the time
Culkin drowning his baby brother. That's definitely children's entertainment.
they shat on full metal jacket n silence of the lambs wtf?
The “ Black Love Story”?
is cologino the same kid as young frank dux in bloodsport?
No, it is Pierre Rafini.
Shutup about "The Good Son" That film was awesome. Waaah waaah about "the children."

you must be joking.
*onlyfacts* how come?

Ouch, but true. CASE CLOSED.
Ernest Kovach What the fuck are you on about?you lunatic... they both liked the film
A Bronx Tale is good the first time you see it and then not so much after that. The young black lady was a dreadful actress.
I liked the good son. I think these guys are judgmental and shallow. These guys are the worst!
Bronx Tale was a totally lame movie. The Program was fantastic for its time. Need to watch it again to see how well it holds up.
Sean Adams A Bronx Tale was awesome mate, you must not like gangster movies very much.
