Parents are funny when it comes to their kid's music. I remember leaving the house to go see David Gilmour on a solo tour in the early to mid 80's, when my mom stopped me and asked "who are you going to see?". I replied, "you wouldn't know". She then said, "I might". I told her "David Gilmour". Her response, "that's nice". Funny thing is that the same is probably true now between my generation (late boomers) and Gen Z! Life repeats itself, doesn't it!

I’m a huge Dirty Honey fan from the beginning. I’ve seen them live three times now, all fantastic, high-energy shows! Marc has the right amount of charisma to draw you in, without ever coming off as unapproachable and ‘rock royalty elitist.’ He’s often in the audience now when he sings “Another Last Time,” which is just a fun, sexy, old school sounding good time…held my hand and sang right to me in September! This band makes me feel young again (I’m 51), and really that’s what I want in my music these days!💃🏻

Look at mainstream "rock" music today... It's the same crap as the Nickelback, Shinedown, Puddle of Mudd" crap that was on the radio when I was in high school 20 years ago...
Worse still, look at "country" music today. It's basically the same as that 2000's "booty rock" mixed with 20 year old hip hop... Just generic fodder for the lowest common denominator... People keep buying it and eating it up like chicken nuggets from McDonald's... They suck, but it's cheap, easy, convenient, and requires the least amount if effort to produce, sell, and consume by all parties involved.

    • @SoundBuckle
      @SoundBuckle Год назад +4

@@ChrsGuit yes, but music becomes 'mainstream' because it's popular and in demand, and because of that it's reproduced, and therefore recognisable (and perhaps boring to musicians). All music is formulaic - time signatures and keys determine that.
Also, guitars and the broader music track are only part of song. Plenty of brilliant songs have very simple music, with impactful lyrics. A good songs blends all elements, often each very simple in their own right.

My impression of Dirty Honey is that they're great musicians with a wide range of influences. I’m not hearing as much 70’s vocal stylings as many commentators seem to be. It seems they’re connecting what’s happening with the instrumentation and the vocal in a way that’s cohesive to their sensibilities. It makes sense, but to my ear is not nearly as accurate as what you’re picking up.

A little echo of The Doors in that opening "slow and foreboding" riff you mentioned and definitely some Jim Morrison early on in the initial "quiet voice". First time hearing this. I like it. Thank you!
--edit: And also reminiscent of Clapton's "Change the World", too.

These guys are amazing! After a few really bad years and feeling like I lost myself a bit, Dirty Honey took me right back to what got me into music in the first place. I saw them twice this year (download and then on your with Rival Sons) and I'm planning to see them again in January when they come back to the UK.
It's worth mentioning that they are still unsigned (by choice) and are really making waves. I absolutely recommend them. Both their albums are well worth a listen.

Glad you are featuring Dirty Honey. I saw them back in April at a small outdoor venue. They are a great band. I have been aware of their guitarist, John Notto, for quite some time because he used to be in Haley Reinhart's band a number of years ago. Marc LaBelle is a great vocalist as well. Well worth the ticket price around $25. Mammoth WVH was supposed to be on the bill as well but had to cancel due to Covid. Turn out was a bit sparse. I am glad I saw them. Absolutely support these guys. Naked Gypsy Queens, a very young rock band out of Nashville, opened for them. I enjoyed them as well.

IMO there's nothing wrong with it especially since they capture the vibe and the essentials of that era musocally whilst not knocking anybody off. While this ticks all the Rockn'Roll boxes, give me something newer and more original even if it doesn't "rock" in these ways, especially the lyrics. They'll be more of these bands down the pipe, and those who didn't get the first wave need this, clearly.

The Darkness and many rock and punk bands have moved the genre of rock forward. Take an hour or two to listen to the last The Darkness album and you'll see that the writing, production, and musicianship is amazing. While also being raw and meaningful. Rock will never die. Or at least I hope it doesnt.
P.S. The band featured reminds me more of a mashup of AC/DC, The Black Crowes, and Axle Rose. And I suppose you could throw in a bit of Led Zep.

That’s the mix I hear, plus a smattering of Aerosmith and Poison. It just seemed like I knew the song immediately, which isn’t a bad thing. I think rock is too challenging for people these days. The trend is for simple, morose and/or childish, same-ish sounding stuff that feeds their depression and keeps them low, rather than music that celebrates life. I’m hoping we turn the corner on that pretty soon.

I am one of the fortunate to have been a kid in the seventies. Little did we know that the music on our FM stations in the mid to late years of that decade, was from a few years prior. All of these amazing "new" bands had been making records long before they got heavy airplay and sold out arenas.
The foundation of rock - there are only so many riffs and melodies and everything is somewhat derivative of what came before.
Every now and then an artist conjures up a recipe of notes, arrangements, musicianship, imagination ...combines just the right elements to produce something fresh and timeless.
Dirty Honey has a good sound but nothing new or enduring in this tune.
