    I have been blind for 23 years, and this would be such an amazing opportunity to obtain one of these devices.

    Hi Sam,
    So, my father-in-law has had the IrisVision for about a week. We found that the battery drained when in the carrying case and the phone turned off. The issue seems to be that the most obvious way to pack it is to stuff the straps in the open space. However, there is a sensor between the lenses and if the strap is detected, it turns on. When it drains completely and shuts down the phone, it requires removing the phone to turn it back on, which can be a little tricky. It's just something to be aware of and try to avoid. I spoke with the company and they are working on an update to prevent this.
    Also, did you notice if your settings changed between uses or after the phone shuts down? I'm not really sure what happened, but it seemed like my father-in-law needed to tweak his settings very often.
    Overall, we are very impressed so far with both the device and the company! We have reached out to the company on several occasions and they have been very helpful.
    Your review was spot on and I greatly respect and appreciate all of the time you put into your videos. The impatience of the people at the store is disgusting, but not surprising. My father-in-law was stopped boarding a plane because "fishing rods" (aka, his cane) are not allowed on board. So much ignorance and rudeness...
    Thanks again!

    • @theblindlife

      LOL, my daughter and I laughed very hard at the fishing pole story! I have a friend who is totally blind and uses a cane. One day she and her husband were shopping at Walmart and as they were checking out the lady behind the register was standing there with her arms crossed glaring at them. This lasted for a few minutes before finally she said, "well are you going to buy that broom or what?" LOL I can kind of understand a mistake like that but confusing it for a fishing pole is ridiculous!
      I did notice a couple of times that when I left the device, which had a decent charge, in the carrying case overnight it would be dead in the morning. Since I didn't have it very long I guess I didn't think anything of it but now that you explain it, it totally makes sense. Hopefully they can take care of that little bug. All in all though, as you said, I was pretty pleased with the device

      I have a golf knockof cane right now. accidentally scanned it at walmart and paid for it.... kind of hard to explain to them why i wanted 30 bucks back. i have since found and removed the barcode :p
      evidently Walmart has canes in there inventory system if not actually in the store.

    Wow, Sam, I'm so excited with this device!
    But here in Brazil is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find a digital magnifier device with an affordable price... I cant imagine how much this Iris Vision would cost here. Even a standard large print card game pack is WAAAY to expensive in Brazil. Very sad.
    Thanks for the beautiful videos.
    Low vision cheers from Brazil!

    So Sam, I ordered the iris vision today should be here in a couple of days. I am excited about Checking out The device. I've tried other devices that we know of in the past, but I think this one' May be the best choice at present time. I'll let you guys know how I like it when I get it.

    Darn that's out of my price range. I already use my S7 as a magnifier. Man I'd love to take this thing out to the range and see if my shooting accuracy improves.

      Nice pistol. I'm a shotgun person.
      Let me tell ya it's funny when friends tell me about the odd expresions of others when they see a good old mosberg with a shotgun scope :)
      Whats even funnier is when someone else tries to use my gun and they pull the scope to close then pull the trigger.
      it's designed for a distint focus and they treat it like a rifle scope instint black eye.

    • @spacepirateshobbies9426
      @spacepirateshobbies9426 7 лет назад

      LOL! I can just see that. I'm looking into a Mosberg 590. You want to hear something even funnier, The school for the blind I went to back in the 70s-80s actually had a gun safety class or as they called a hunting safety class. We didn't get to shoot the rifles, but we were shown most everything else.

    oh i would really like if you talked about dealing with people that get annoyed or impatient...
    my biggest issue (esp with card readers in stores) is that people see me slowly getting the card positioned, and jump to offer to help...i am not THAT slow, certainly not enough to cause annoyance to other people, and I find it frustrating. I know they mean well...but its just frustrating, you know? Even my family members so this to me. I donno-if you have tips, I would love to hear them I guess...

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  7 лет назад

      Ugh, card readers! Those things drive me absolutely crazy! It used to be easy, I could just give the person my card and they could swipe it at the register but not anymore. Now if I told them that I can't see it and ask them to do it for me they lean over and swipe the card and then tell me to just put my pen number in. Even though I clearly just told them that I can't do it! LOL so frustrating! I'm afraid I don't have any tips, that's the one area of low vision that I am completely lost as well!

  • @mihailfelixdumitresc

    I don't mean to ruin anyone's commercial interest here, but the Iris Vision, like Patriot View Point, is composed of a Samsung VR gear set you can buy for literally $100, plus either of a Samsung Galaxy S 6/S7/S8 smart phone + an app called Relumino which is specially designed for people with low vision by Samsung and which is free. As of March 2019, the cost of these 2 devices is less than $ 700 and you get exactly the same thing as Iris Vision or like Patriot View Point.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  5 лет назад

      Yes, that is correct but I’ve also heard that Samsung is not actively developing that app any longer. So it might not to get updates in the future.

    I still see blurry on the closest setting...
    I downloaded the Samsung RELUMINO app for free which does the exact same thing on the Gear VR.
    Usually to see clearly I have to use the phone about an inch from my face.
    Is there any way to rig the Gear VR to bring the picture closer?
    Or do you know any other device that has a screen at least 3 to 1 inch from your face?

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  6 лет назад +1

      I don’t think you would be able to read it it any closer without taking it apart, and then you run the risk of the controls not working. There are other VR headsets that are designed differently, some with even larger lens is making the screen easier to see. However, they don’t have the same controls that you would need for the app.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  6 лет назад

      I wonder if you could use some cheap reading glasses along with the gear VR headset. Maybe that would make it not blurry because it wouldn’t magnify the lenses which would then magnify the screen. Just a thought.

      The thing that makes my vision difficult are pizza pie corneal scars from radialkeratotomy, scars from Lasik, and keratoconus which bulge between each scar also in both eyes...
      Can't wear glasses anymore,
      I'm thinking of getting scleral lenses to see if they help, but they're super expensive at my budget

    oh hey also-would you consider doing a rundown of different devices, aids, and apps you see as currently useful? You could just do a rundown of what you personally use, or you could consider doing a list of stuff you would be using in a perfect world with unlimited money. Its hard for me to keep up with and know about what is out there! Thanks!

      @theblindlife  7 лет назад +1

      I'll definitely consider making a video about that in the future, not a bad idea. In the meantime though, I have made videos about all the devices and apps that I use and recommend. You may have to search through my tech playlist which has gotten pretty large to find them!

    Hi Sam, Thanks for another really great video. I for one appreciate all the time it takes for you to demo products such as this. I have a couple of questions.
    Does the the S7 that comes with the device also work as a functional smart phone? Could you use other Samsung phones with it? Also how is the depth of field or the focusing range? A lot of video magnifiers need you to hold what ever you are reading in a fairly narrow range or it goes out of focus. Once again Thanks

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  7 лет назад

      Those are great questions! Unfortunately because of time I wasn't able to include some of that information in the video. You cannot use the S7 as a phone. You also can't install any other apps on it as well. The phone is modified to run the iris vision application and it can't be used for other things. The gear VR headset works with any of the newer Samsung phones. I was able to plug my galaxy note for into it and use other VR apps. I was really impressed with the focus on the device. Since it uses the galaxy S7 camera, you get all the functionality of that amazing camera. When I was testing, I could look at an object across the room and then put my hands in front of the camera and it would instantly focus on my hands. Then when I took my hands away, it would very quickly focus back on the distant object. It worked really well

    Hey Sam, couple of questions. How much magnification? Is that device heavier than The other devices? Does the phone come with it? Was the field of few better than other devices? Stabilization? Does it cancel out all sunlight unlike what you said the other device wasn't good with. Thanks for answering these couple of questions.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  7 лет назад

      I'll do my best to answer! I'm not sure of the magnification, you may have to contact the developers to get a specific answer. I'm not sure if this gives you any idea of the level of magnification but I was able to read large print that was held fully extended at arms length in front of me. The deer VR has really good straps so it didn't feel heavy on my head at all. The phone does, with the device, you can check out my un-boxing video to see everything that comes with it. The field-of-view was pretty good. If you imagine holding a smart phone 2 inches in front of your eyes, that's about the field-of-view. The galaxy S7 does have really good image stabilization. When inside, the deer VR goggles block out all of the outside light. When I took it out into the sunlight though I did notice some light leaking in but I was still able to see the screen no problem. Hope that helps!

  • @buyukberber
    @buyukberber 7 лет назад

    Thanks so much for taking the time to test and review this Sam! I have couple of questions, thoughts.
    A few years ago, at the center for the Blind and Visually impaired here in Amsterdam, they let me try a then really fancy and expensive pair of electronic goggles. I don’t remember what they were called. The device was unusable for me because of the significant difference in what my right and left eye see (which also causes me to have no depth perception), plus the nistagmus I have that causes me to have to turn my head about 45 degrees to be able to focus. Since the release of iOS 10, I can use an iPhone or an iPad as a magnifier with the built in magnifier inside the accessibility features, because I can either put the device a bit to the side of my head or turn my head.
    I never tried VR goggles. The ones you show looks like it has two separate visors, is that correct? I’m assuming one has to have close to equal amount of vision on both eyes to be able to use this device. Is that so? If so, I guess this awesome looking device would not be usable by someone with my condition. It’s likely mentioned in the documentation of the device itself, but it would be great to know more details about what kind of seeing imparements are aided by the VR goggles, and which not.
    Thanks again! Warm greetings from Amsterdam!

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  7 лет назад

      Thank you very much for those warm greetings! It's always amazing to talk with people in other countries! It's unfortunate that vision impairment brings people together like this, but I'm happy it does! It's hard to say if a device like this would work for you are not, just like with all other assistive technology I would recommend trying it out first. All VR goggles have separate lenses for each eye. Most goggles will allow you to move the lenses closer to the eye or further away in order to help with focus. Some devices will also let you move the lenses sideways, laterally, to compensate for the width of different people's eyes. I don't know of any that will allow you to move the lenses separately from each other in order to focus for each eye individually. There may be some out there, just not sure. I would recommend checking out my "Nearsighted VR" app review. It's a free app available on android, but there are similar ones available on iPhone as well, which uses a very inexpensive Google cardboard VR goggles/headset. It would be a very inexpensive way to test out if these types of apps would work for you. If you search nearsighted VR on RUclips, my video should be the first one to pop up.

    Hi Sam, I'm inquiring on behalf of my Dad. We traveled over a year ago to demo the esight device and, like you, were sorely dissapointed with it and the technology. We heard the IRIS vision has th e widest field of view but is the screen like looking through a viewfinder, like the esight? That's the biggest barrier at this point, we're looking for something he can be mobile with. Also, have you tried Nueyes yet? We were told they function just like the esight, but curious to hear your perspective. Thanks for your honest opinions!

    Can you project your computer screen on this device? It would be awesome if it did. It would replace your big monitor and relief the strain on your neck. I put 40 hr plus in front of a monitor and subconsciously I still need to bend forward which strains my beck and I have to go to the chiropractor twice a weak because of that. This device would eliminate that issue if it did project the monitor of the computer on it. Much like the oculus with virtual desktop, which I'm thinking to buy, but this is even better if you can use with vertical desktop or have a app included with it that project the computer screen on it.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  7 лет назад

      That would be pretty cool! I know they are working on new features but I also know they want to keep it as easy to use as possible. Many people with low vision aren't very tech savvy. It's difficult to maintain the balance between cool features and ease of use.

    • @GagzGrova
      @GagzGrova 5 лет назад

      I doubt that could work with this since it uses your phone as a screen and doesnt have a screen of its own(correct me if I'm wrong). You could have a look at Windows Mixed Reality range of headsets that run Windows natively and you could have multiple windows floating around you in Virtual Reality which you can zoom move around or zoom into etc. Its the closest thing I can think of to what you're asking. I have the same issue at work with bending forward and kills my back. I try to use Windows zoom but still find myself leaning forward.

      It works very well in low light conditions like that. I’ve taken it to concerts and theater performances where it was very dark and looking onto a bright stage, it worked perfectly. The Samsung camera is very good at brightening up the image in low light.

      Well there’s pros and cons for each device and since everyone is different I always recommend you try them out first. For me though, the iris vision works much better. It has a larger screen which is easier for me to see. Also the fact that it’s wireless is a plus.

      Also iris vision has a much wider field of view, which could possibly be helpful for an illustrator.

    Can you record video with this device?

      Not right now. That may be something they add in the future. However, I think there are privacy issues which may prevent them from adding that feature.

    by god someone just release an app that does this for a resonabul price you can choose your own device for.
    in short. Any phones camera app would work with a few options added
    1. no sleep when not recording.
    2. easy zoom options BT remote remap fowerd reverse to zoom. play to mode swich
    3. mode (this is just video filters.) invert color invert B/W liinemode (makes everything look like it's drawn lines) for us who need VERRY high contrast (one color one black on white one white on black)
    lastly if ya wana get fancy
    4. stablisation on zoom target locking if you will.
    Any android device phone or otherwise can do this to verieng degrees depindiing on the camera included.
    For a 2300 $ device it should of had a custom camera with optiical zoom in it :/

      Even with an app you would still have to hold the device to your face. At least I would. It looks to be a great value if you ask me.

    This stuff really annoys me. $5 app they're charging $2000 for as they're including an out of date phone and a Gear VR worth $500 max. This is how a lot of this tech works. Standard everyday tech with a bit of custom software sold at a ridiculous markup.

    Why is this $2500 when the main lifting is being done by the phone and some software? The rest is just a headset with lenses that is useless without the phone. Please tell me if I am missing something but to me this seems like such a robbery! How can a company exploit people like this. I just use my phone camera to help me in the dark or to zoom into things.

    Hey Sam...can you have a rep contact me . My low vision doctor in Austin TX has had no luck in having a rep contact her. Dr. Miller is very interested in this product and as of date, no one has contacted her after she wrote to them about 2.5 months ago. Thanks!

      The Association of Blind Citizens operates the Assistive Technology Fund. The Assistive Technology Fund (ATF) will provide funds to cover 50% of the retail price of adaptive devices or software. The ABC board of directors believes that this program will allow blind and visually impaired individuals access to technology products that will have a significant impact on improving employment opportunities, increase the level of independence and enhance their overall quality of life.
      The products covered by this program must retail for a minimum of $200 with a maximum retail price of $6,000. www.blindcitizens.org/assistive_tech.htm

    OK so the S7 isn't new anymore, and the gear headset is also not the newest thing out there. Clearly the high price. Isn't because of the hardware. so is this yet another case of overpriced accessibility software simply for the sake of being overpriced.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  7 лет назад +1

      Well if you were to buy a brand-new S7 and gear VR, as well as wireless charger, you'd be pushing $1000 right there. But you have to remember they are not just selling hardware. They have to try and recoup some of the money they put into research and development of the app as well as testing. Not to mention the logistics of running the company, payroll, office space, utilities like Internet and phone, not to mention taxes. When you take that all into consideration, in my opinion 2500 isn't too bad. And I'm sure as they sell more units in the future, the price will come down.

      That's the problem with assistive technology, the cost of development is never offset because the population of potential users is not big enough. The development of any new technology is costly, but usually over time the cost comes down as more people buy. There simply aren't enough VIPs to eventually offset the cost of development. The approach of IRIS Vision seems to be the way to go; use pre-existing technology to lower cost of development. Still, it is disappointing that despite that, the cost is thousands of dollars.
