This video was so helpful. I had watched others on similar topics, but they didn’t delve into the details as you did. Like the others stated I too like the iPhone sounds best. I’m excited to start blogging with my new iPhone 12! Many thanks!

The volume seems to go down a lot when you use the Rhode mic. Is that because it cancels out all the higher frequencies ? Sure, it does sound cleaner, but I would have to crank up the volume on it. Looking for a mic to use with my iPhone outside in windy (most of the time) Edmonton Alberta. My Canon camera has no mic jack, but an okay built in mic. However, that's only true when there isn't any wind. Considering also recording sound separately on the iPhone, but the idea would be to have the mic closer, and this Rhode mic wouldn't work for that neither. Sound for RUclips is challenging. Thanks for doing this test.

Hey for iPhone i day this is the best for wind , indoors and not much wind the iPhone mic is great. The rode wireless go 2 is also great if you can get a tripod with coldshoe attachment for it

Thanks for this video. The last take is far too noisy to my liking.
I’ve had a Shure MV88 stereo mic for four years now and used it on an iPad mini until I got my first iPhone, a 12 mini, a year ago. Where I live, outdoors = usually windy, so using the built in mic was out of the question. I also want stereo, so never considered the Rode mic, and just used the Shure - outdoors and in.
Just now, though, inspired by your good self, I tried the iPhone mics on their own indoors and compared them to the sure MV 88 - without a dead cat of course.
The result was much richer stereo sound on the iPhone without the Shure mic, almost spatial, which completely amazed me. So yes, the iPhone mics have improved vastly over time!
I know the Rose dead cat is big, but it’s effective and better than the smaller Shure MV88 dead cat.

Even with post processing, the Rode mic with the foam topper provides the most consistent sound when you transition from indoors to outdoors. The dead cat does look ridiculous, LOLOLOL.

If I’m exclusively indoors do you think the iPhone mic(13pro) is sufficient? I’m worried mostly about echos because so have a pretty empty office room atm which is what prompted me to search for an external mic. Appreciate any help

  • @sirgigolo

The MeL sounds better in the wind. All you need to do is add a little gain. Not only that, the iPhone mic kept changing it’s sound. That will be no good for video. Maybe it’s some sort of digital wind reduction or something.

Also, interesting little effect at 4:57 --- I guess that was some noise cancellation kicking in?

They should put in bold print on that quick start guide booklet in the box that you need the rode app to make the microphone work . . . I accidentally threw out the box which says download the rode app and couldn't figure out why the mic wasn't working. Took it into the Apple Store and the tech asked me if I had the app. Downloaded the app and it worked. I will say I wish they could explain the settings more for those not so tech or mic savvy. Otherwise, it seems to doing its job.
