I own a fully loaded 2017 GLS 450 4Matic (a friend of mine worked for Mercedes and got me the employee discount and it saved me a ton of money) and it is by far my favorite SUV I’ve ever owned. Prior to my GLS I owned several generations of Tahoe and thought I was a Chevy man for life. But after driving the GLS for 5 years I may never go back. I use it for real off road on fishing and camping trips and it holds all my gear plus my friends’ gear with room to spare. The engine always has the power I need on the highway or traveling up mountain passes. So far, knock on wood, there have been zero problems with the vehicle. My only regret is that I did not get the locking rear diff as an option.
Consumer Report just said that the Mercedes GLS is the least reliable SUV. Edmunds disagree. First of all I never trusted Consumer Reports to begin with. Secondly, Consumer Report only gives "High" ratings to Toyota and Lexus. I have never seen them ever say anything good for other cars like the Germans, Korean and American. Their worst in their list is Jeep. Unfortunately for Consumer Reports, Jeep is as well a good vehicle. I had a 2011 GLS 450 (used to be GL) and have the latest GLS and never had problems with the old one even after 280 thousand miles. Very reliable and never had issues never had any kind of oil leaks. Just follow the regular maintenace and it will be ok. Cabin is very quiet like when it was new.
I wish I could buy one for $77,000 USD. Just ordered one here in Australia and the prices we pay for vehicles is ridiculous. Still can't wait for it to arrive. Great review.
I have a 2018 GLS450. Had a couple problems, but minor. Driver power door lock and window washer motor broken. Replaced under warranty. One brake job from and rear including from rotors replacement was a $1200 job. Drives OK, and the interior still holding up quite well. The interior is a bit dated, but it feels the same as the day it was new. My lease is up in a few months. I’m on the fence whether I should buy it or not. It still looks gorgeous and runs well. I fear sticker shock for all the maintenance to come, but I do run a business. It could be written off. It definitely is not cheap to maintain unlike my Acura though.
Brakes and rotors are a couple bolts- really easy to do yourself if you want to save money and or enjoy getting your hands a little dirty. Probably 300-400 for front and rears in parts... they make a ton on service while charging multiple hours at lawyer hourly rates for a job that probably takes them under an hour with a lift.
The best feature of the GLS is the electronic active suspension, a feature not available on the 450. The "curve" mode makes the car handle with what seems supernatural agility. It also has better offroading ability than the regular version even in the absence of a low gear. The 580 is also a lot faster and also tows a lot better given it 615 lbs of torque. On the other hand... If you get a 580 so equipped you are talking about 35- 40K more.... Decisions! I was lucky to get one before the 580 went on "hiatus" for over a year, it now has 37K miles. It has been absolutely, 100%, bulletproof. LOVE IT!
We've come a long way with car tech where a full size luxury crossover with a six cylinder engine gets to 60MPH in 7.5 seconds. Imagine how long the AMG63 model will take to achieve the same speed. 3 seconds?
GLS is assembled in Alabama, and S class in Stuttgart, Germany … big difference… I owned Alabama Benz and now have S550 … there are noticeable differences in quality … I also owned GLK 350 built in Stuttgart… German built Benzes are just better quality vehicles … Germans won’t let anyone else do S class but them , and it shows
I wish MB would redesign it to look more like the Yukon or Tahoe, or the 23 Sequioa. More boxy and more roomy like those. It's just too curvy and "small" now.
Glad it is a hybrid. Glad it has all it has. As a single person, I just would not buy it for the simple fact, it is enormous. lol I would lease it I suppose if the need arose. And Nathan, be fair, this buy, lease, or rent choice has to apply to the vehicle you drove. lol So, while you would buy something else, that means, you would lease this or rent it. :P
I just traded in my 2016 GLS for a 2023 EQS SUV. Wow, the GLS for me blows the EQS -SUV away. First the free fast charging with electry america is a joke. Few stations around and most have a broken charger. NOT like tesla chargers who have it together. So the free charging is mostly marketing for MB brand. .I called MB if I can charge this at any MB dealer when not near my home - like Tesla and porsche does and told no, Wish I checked into this before I bought the EQS. EQS overly complicated and major issue. You spend a lot of time looking at the screen which is a safety concern when driving., I am told that MB wants a car that is mostly voice controlled., MY EQS gets over 400 miles on a charge. Great!. But you also pay a lot more so reality of cost saving when spending $10,000 plus over a GLS- no SAVING. The GLS ride- amazing. Acceleration for a SUV of this size great, MUCH Bigger size than EQS. quiet, comfortable. The con an a mercedes is the newer ones start to break at 70,000 miles. My GLS had issues after 70,000, Expensive to fix once out of warranty and no one will give you an extended warranty including MB company. BUT buy or lease the SUV and keep it 5 years. Just incredible even if not a family man. The ride along and quiet is heaven.
They were finally forced to offer the AMG pack on the 450 since the 580's production got paused. Secondly this is NOT on the S-Class platform, they aren't even related. This shares it's platform with the GLE, not the S-Class.
The manufacturer websites states otherwise though. It says GLS is the S-Class of SUVs. “S stands for Sonderklasse, which means “special class”. Since this aspect of the GLS meaning is shared with the S-Class sedan, we think it’s more or less self-explanatory. With a “special class” vehicle, you can expect unrivaled luxury.” Let me know if am missing anything please, cheers.
@@AmroG. Well clearly you missed it. Again they are not on the same platform. Not sure what’s not getting through. Doesn’t matter what the marketing says. I’m well aware of what S stands for in the name.
@@MercOne I watched in the last few days plenty of reviews about the GLS and they all have in common that GLS became a luxury S type like SUVs from their second gen, which matches what Mercedes Bens is stating and promoting as well. I believe them both to be honest specially with the premium specs and price. I know you are seeing this all from a different view though and that’s alright.
there is NOT enough room for adults in the 3rd row. Every review has the passenger with there knees touching the 2nd row. The X7 has a smaller trunk because you can sit an adult in the 3rd row.
this has a useable third row … and it’s build quality is probably miles ahead of kia. i would trust a mercedes straight 6 over anything built by hyundai
Hey Guyz...would like to see some fun stuff too.....dirt , snow , muddy , hill climb, awd capability etc....night drive, under belly of the car etc.... For this money, there are no FOG lights? How can you expect to see far in rain @3000k?🙄🙄🙄🙄

I always got to NHTSA. It's pretty much the most neutral, and in depth site
Nathan is my favorite TFL reviewer. 👍🏿
And optioned with a Rush t-shirt !!
just bought last week. Extremely smooth, but you didn’t mention air suspension, it contributed so much to driving experience.

Really sharp looking vehicle. I'd be scared about the long term reliability, and having a mechanic that knows how to work on it.

Love the RUSH shirt!! My favorite band and my favorite SUV by far
really nice car with crazy technology, but I would not want to own one of these in 10 years out of warranty.
You can get aftermarket warranty for a very reasonable amount.
Anybody else find themselves being quiet and holding their breath when they are measuring the interior sound?
no...ive never done that
Balanced review, nicely done! OMG that paper in the first half and the end tho Nathan. Crinkle crinkle crinkle….
Tbh, I had no idea what you said the first times, but the 3rd time I understood as well.

Mild hybrid at best, not a hybrid in the traditional sense.
I'd like to give a shout out to your videographer who, thanks to Nathan, is nameless other than "camera guy"
My dad own 2022 Mercedes-benz gls450 4matic Polar white and sport package!

Woudl much rather have a Merc from the 70s or 80s. Too much tech these days for me.
there's no way this is anyone's favorite mercedes? What about the E63s wagon, AMG GT63s 4 door, AMG GT Black Series, SL63 etc.?
GLE63 AMG? Not the "coupe" version though.
Different people are allowed to have different preferences.
Hopefully I saved up in time for the EQS this version
The 2022 GLS 450 front grille looks different unless MBenz change it to 2021 model. ✌🏻

Someone tell me why there is a yellow stripe next to cars made in America?
I came here for the Rush shirt. Stayed for the MB info. :)
I thought you had 2 solo dls. New and old one
I have 2020 gls 450 omg this car is beautiful
I just bought my wife the 2022 GLS 450 2 days ago and she loves it
You like it?
96 thousand!!! are you kidding. My Kia Telluride SX was 55k and is just as good. oil changes for me are 60 bucs vs. 250 bucs for this mercedes...
Tellurid vs GLS? Too much Cool-Aid?

Its about $20k more than competitors, but its really nice 😅👍

Fog lights are useless in fog.
Nonsense😝😝😝😝
I care about body lean and suspension stiffness. I don’t want a lot of lean like an armada.
Agree. The comfort ride is great on bumpy roads and long straights. But when you are on the mountain roads, Sport mode is def. the way to go.
Bicycle?
Looks nice, is that the Polar White with night package
Wait 5 years you can pick it up for 35k
those sunglasses do not say Mercedes
Why can't the German manufacturers match the reliability of Lexus?
Kase 😍
At $80k - this, Yukon AT4, Yukon Denali, X7, Wagoneer, base Escalade?
This and the Denali are the best looking in my opinion :)
X7 🙌
So are we going to ignore that Broken azz seat that did not go down
Find snarks? WTF is a snarks?
🤣😂
