- ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is the newest Crossover from America's best know builder of off-road vehicles. However the newest Jeep breaks the traditional Wrangler mold in too many ways to count. It is neither boxy nor traditional. It is in fact a completely modern and re-designed Jeep for the new age. But the question remains...is this a true off-road worthy jeep. In another accurate fun and informative TFLcar video review, Nathan and Roman take the 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk into the Colorado Rocky mountains to see how it does in the snow and rocks when the trail gets messy.

I too traded a Wrangler (with 3" lift, 33's) for a 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk, and I too am disheartened (but NOT surprised) by the ignorant comments. Build quality, off-road prowess, comfort of the Trailhawk is OUTSTANDING! PS- I Paid $20900 for a 2014 well equipped V6 Trailhawk!
Do you have any idea how long these trail hawks last, recently bought a 2014 with 90k miles and it runs great but I’m worried about it’s durability.
@@chokepointgaming3827 I just got a 2014 with 130k miles. I love it! I suspect we’ll get many miles out of these things. Tip: use pennzoil platinum 5w30. (Assuming you have the V6)
@@PaDutchRunner yes I have the v6, it has a slight sound like a flywheel grinding or something when starting out in 1st gear. I bought mine around 90k and the only thing I needed to have done was replace the radiator
Because it was leaking coolant. And there’s a slight vibration in the steering wheel above 80 miles an hour. Other than that the thing is a tank.
@@PaDutchRunner I actually don’t think the Trailhawk has a four-cylinder version. If it does it would be completely pointless because of how heavy it is. I’ve been to the part store and even though many people think it’s the same car it’s actually totally different. brakes are different rotors or different tires are different it’s completely pleated underneath and protected which adds more weight to the vehicle. Different starters in alternators different battery. It really is a different car than the Cherokee
@@chokepointgaming3827 I’m so impressed by it thus far. And I’m so glad I didn’t pay $40k! However, even at $40k, I’d feel as though I got a great value.
just bought a 2015 jeep Cherokee trail hawk got the life time warranty for it so far i love it
I said it on another video, but I have been a jeep guy for a long long time and I would love to have one of these. Jeeps have always had a unique look and this new Cherokee takes it up a notch. I would be proud to own one of these
It's funny reading the usual comments below by people who have no idea what they are talking about. I just traded a 2012 Pentastar wrangler for a 2015 Trailhawk and the Trailhawk beats the Wrangler in every category from traction and gas mileage to comfort and handling. I think Jeep finally got something right with this car. It has ten times better traction than the wrangler in mud or deep sand. It does remind me of my Subarus, only it has so many more gearing options. All the handy storage cubbie holes are similar to an Outback that I had.
My Trailhawk has exceeded all expectations in deep mud holes, mountain terrain and the NC beaches. No breakdowns yet and the 9 speedtransmission is doing great so far. although I see no benefit to it ever going over 7th gear.
Great input! I specifically like you comparing it to a subaru because I've been between this and an XV for a long time! I too currently drive a wrangler and I HATE it!
***** +John Strand happy with my 4 banger th... its a beast in its own rights.. 4:56:1 :) lockers... 9 speed in 4 low in bad weather is unmatched..
I had a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport up until 2014. In 2020 I bought a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk (the only trim level that looks good) with less than 50k miles. Love it.
I honestly love the looks of this car, very sharp
Best looking jeep they have ever made
Have a 2015 Cherokee Trailhawk and it is a GREAT vehicle. Comfortable, powerful, good gas mileage and has plenty of off road capability. Love it!
People's opinion of the front end design is subjective. It's their taste. And mind you, everyone has a different taste. The new Jeep Cherokee is excellent to drive.
Can you revisit this with the 2016/17 model trailhawk?
Theyre practically the exact same except for gas tanks
If people hate the looks of the Cherokee what on earth do they think of the Ford Escape ? looks like a space shuttle.
Curious to know how many of you with the negative comments actually sat in and drove the Trailhawk?
I too thought the Cherokee was butt-ugly in photos until I took the plunge and actually went to a dealer to see it. My wife convinced me to since we could not afford the Grand Cherokee.
This is a prime example of 'the photos don't do it justice'. It impressed the hell out of me in looks and drove so well I bought one completely optioned out for less than a basic Grand Cherokee.
My 2003 Liberty took me 345,000 kms so I wanted to stick with the Jeep family.
I purchased a 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk. I am very proud of my new Jeep. I owned a '01 Cherokee and loved that also, but this Jeep does everything that did and does it better. It hauls stuff for work better, its way more comfortable to drive, it has more power under the hood, and it can handle snow and the minor trails I will take it on just fine. I looked at the Grand Cherokees but for the same options it would be 7k - 10k more.
I've loved these since I've first saw them .. Their different
I've had a wrangler, and an Xterra. i now have a 2015 kl and it is awesome. Other than a Rubicon, raptor, zr2, ram pw, it'll beat any other rig off road, yes including the 4 runner trd pro. But i also paid 25k out the door price...
I'm doubting about buying an used 2014 Trailhawk, my other option would be the exact vehicles you said before (been looking for a 2010 pro 4x xterra as well but I really don't like that 4.0 engine mileage). Your words give me a lot of hopes for the Trailhawk, can you tell me more about it in comparison to the Xterra? I'd really appreciate it. Hope you are still enjoying your KL!
Bought one. Love it! This review was decent, but didn't share the numerous options available. The price they quoted is what we paid and with it came the technology AND luxury... Nav, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, it will park itself, Park sensors, more+more+more. Yeah, at first we thought it looked odd, but now it looks like it's got an attitude... and it does! By far it suits our needs better than the 2010 Tundra we traded in and is comparable in comfort and technology to our 2013 Audi A7. It's working for us!!
I like those daytime running lights
I'm actually begining to really dig the looks, specially in Trailhawk.
This car is without question one of the most competent off road vehicles out there. It’s not being made for all you Jeep purists, it’s being made for a much wider market. And Jeep did it in spades. And for all those comments about the looks, so you want ALL JEEPS to look exactly the same? Really? It looks, drives and handles great! Glad I bought one. 10/10 Jeep.
That's the best review i've seen of the new Cherokee that isn't just manufacturer propaganda. Great job guys OoIIIIIIIoO
finally a small suv in a good form. Excellent ground clearance and angles.
I have had a 18 Cherokee trailhawk for a few months now and no regrets living 10k ft up in CO. I was actually planning to buy a Tacoma trd or Wrangler because I do live off the pavement and need off road ability (serious snow ability) and from the photos this looks like it will fall apart. After actually offroading it on the mountain trails and driving through a snow storm this is the real deal. Commuting through a blizzard is much easier with Jeep's new active drive 2 vs rolling in 4x4 in a taco or Wrangler plus it rides like luxury vehicle on the road
We were all set to buy a brand new 2014 Limited that was awesome until I read about all the transmission problems. Also didn't like that I would bump my head on the roofline while sitting in the back seat, the sunroof compromises too much headroom. Other than that I thought it was comfy, quiet and well appointed.
I drove one of these and actually saw it in real life (I bet most of these people commenting haven't...) and I thought I wouldn't like it at all-but it is such a good driving SUV. It's smooth and the nine-speed works well. And I drove like a complete maniac and it's average MPG was 28. With mixed driving. I'd get one, just not the trailhawk. I'd get the limited.
Dear Fast Lane, I've studied car and truck suspension for almost 30yrs. I have seen the changes, due to increased vehicle weight, you guy know the reasons for this. Control arm have gotten smaller and weaker, now Aluminum is often being used. MacPherson struts are used for vehicles deemed for off road use instead of upper control arms, and so on.
You guy's should consider showing the suspension and educating people about it.
Thanks for your tests.
Cherokee Trailhawk has to be one of the best snow vehicles ever made. I can't think of much better other than a Wrangler on 40s. I'm sure the Bronco Sport and Landrover defender are equals.
WIll yall take this to texas to see if it will hit 9th gear?
the design is kinda growing on me...
I agree. But the head lights still arn't exactly pretty.
Nice review, Guys, including the cautionary notes about first year build issues. Pity you didn't have deep snow and ice as you did when testing Forester XT, for that Jeep's Firestone Destination tires, when tested by CU, were just as bad on ice as the Forester's Duelers.
This "off road trail" is no different than driving into my cabin here in northern Minnesota so I'm glad you at least mentioned that it wasn't a real off road trail. Would be fun to see it on the Rubicon though. And as far as cold and snow, it's currently -28 here and our last snow brought us 42 inches. :)
I actually own the new Trailhawk - believe it or not, I traded in a 2008 Audi S5. I get just as many admiring looks in this car as I did in the S5. The styling is great - definitely not to be confused with any other CUV. Compared to the Trailhawk, a Grand Cherokee is massively overpriced and big. This car drives great in everyday commuting and gives you the option to head to the ski resorts and moderate offroading. I bought mine fully loaded (less the panoramic sunroof) for $38k off the lot with the impressive Tech package. More practical for everyday use than a Wrangler, but only the absolute purists will complain about its offroad capabilities; for 95% of all other people this is a great balance of onroad/offroad without compromises. After 2 months I couldn't be happier and don't even miss my S5.
Shocking you parted with the S5, but this looks like a very nice piece. NYT reviewed it today and really was impressed.
Oh the daytime running lights are MEAN!
Very nice video. Many thanks.
38K is definitely a lot but that is fully loaded. I went on Jeep's website and built according to my specs and it comes to just shy of 33K. That extra 5K just gets you a bunch of amenities, so you aren't loosing anything that will lessen the offroad performance.
And if you just want the barebones version with the 2.4 4 banger then it is just shy of 30K. Of course all of these number are just based on the Trailhawk, so if you don't care for the off road performance you can choose one of the regular models and load it with luxuries and come out much cheaper for a comparably equipped Trailhawk.
And let's be honest, even a regular Cherokee with the 4x4 option is still going to offer much better off road performance than any other vehicle in its class.
All that being said, I still don't know if I would like it as much as the my old 2000 Cherokee.
Forester does have hill decent control. It`s built into the X-Mode system.
For off-road reviews please include it's turning radius...
The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk has 4 wheel drive with a locking rear differential and a low range, which is more advanced than an all wheel drive system as in the RAV4 and CRV.
In person it actually looks really good.
The new Cherokee shars its platform with the Dodge Dart, which shares it's platform with the Guilleta. I wonder if it shares it's performance and reliability issues too.
Great review, I've been waiting to see the Cherokee doing its thing. It looked pretty easy on this trail though, despite all the snow. You guys should do a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon vs Land Rover Discovery mashup/comparison test offroad, if you can get a hold of both cars at the same time that is...
Still waiting for an Old vs New comparison.
If I had the money I would make the comparison video myself.
XJ Cherokee, KJ Liberty(Cherokee), or KK Liberty(Cherokee) vs this new car based KL "Cherokee".
"KL" =
Kept Laughing?,
Kinda Low?
Keep Losing?
KILLED LIBERTY?
The reality is the old cherokee would suck compared to new in their stock forms. But it would be hard to compare to a mild lifted XJ (3-4") 33s, lockers, long arms. Pretty much everything I've done to it, rides better on road than stock XJ, corners better too. Oh, and off road... With the exception for maybe Truggies... it can pretty much do anything any other off road rig can do. Best part is, 250k on the original motor, and 20mpg (I have 4.56s and auto tranny). And I spent like 2k on the original Jeep, and probably spent $5000 since then between suspension, tires, armor, etc... So $7,000 for weekend warrior, and then I have a 06 Civic Si for daily driver. Even if you added both of the cars together, it still would be less than half of what the new Cherokee costs. This is why the Trail Hawk will not sell. Off roaders, for the most part, don't buy new trucks to go wheel. So why cater to a specific customer when they don't buy new vehicles. Just like all the JK Jeeps... Sure, they are nice, but too much money to go thrash on. Nothing like an old XJ/YJ that can be had for $5,000, then spend another 5,000 on it, and you're good to go.
why isnt there 0-60 on the new jeep 4cyl and new v6? would be nice to see them compared to each other
This vehicle has the same ground clearance as a Subaru Forester only the forester has no skid plates. With a price tag of 38k, I would spend around the same money on a Toyota 4Runner. It's way more off-road capable, better built, and more reliable than that lack luster jeep Cherokee derp. If you want a fuel efficient off-roader than the cherokee derp is the vehicle for you. If you want a real off-roader, than get a second hand vintage cherokee. It's way better looking than the new one and way more off-road capable.
You aren't bright are you? Higher ground clearance, Engine has alot more hp and Torque, it's off road capabilities is in a much higher league than anything Subaru has, it has more safety, luxury and technology than the Subaru, can tow more I mean the list goes on. That is why it costs more so your comparison is seriously flawed. Also it sells for $34k fully loaded.
I do not have a problem with the new Cherokee. I do think that Jeep made a really stupid move when it stopped making the Cherokee and started with the Liberty. The old Cherokee had become a classic and should have just been updated over the years like the Wrangler. This is in many ways a good replacement for the old Cherokee. BTW to all the Cherokee lovers out there do you not remember how the faithful where upset with the last Cherokee? My gosh people it was offered as a four door! What is worse is was unibody! And then they offered it in RWD! What had the world come to!
Its funny, the front I don't mind. The rear end though needs some tweaks. First move the license plate onto the liftgate. it looks horrible on the bumper and leaves that giant gap of nothing on the lift gate. Then make the tail lights more like the 2014 grand cherokee. Don't have them cut into the rear window. The bottom of the rear window should be a straight line like the grand cherokee. Make those changes and the back would look so much better.
Yes, master. We'll do it
i would like to see them drive this thru about a 3 ft deep pond, my 96 xj has no problems doing that.
Great alternative to the grand cherokee and more capable than anything in its class and price point.
Nathan's front made my day
Sweet Jeep! Good video!
It s a little bit hard for me to believe that this is more off-road worthy then RAV4. How much different is the ground clearance between them?
LOL
Toyota for offroad.. haha
to put in perspective, the Trail hawk rides about 2 inches higher than the non Trailhawk models.
supermotox55 Talk about uneducated. Toyota has just as much off road heritage as Jeep.
I would much rather, have a truck than a jeep or espically a Yota.
i think people are just bandwagoning. at first i found it strange but its not nearly as ugly as people make it seems. its actually growing on me
I've been looking around for one and the best deal with all of the options I can find is about 42k out the door. The Cherokee Trailhawk is a lot of vehicle which I like.
I'm still split between the Wrangler Unlimited Polar edition and the Cherokee Trailhawk. I think the Cherokee is more my style for my type of driving though.
My jeep dealer had three 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee's Trailhawk editions (not used) left over a couple months back. 42,000 sticker marked down to 34,000. Trailhawk is not the model for me but that was a great deal. I am surprised they don't put air suspension on this Cherokee Trailhawk.
They forgot to mention the tacoma with a the trd off road package and possibly the frontier
They are not talking about trucks they are talking about small SUVs.
Not enough snow and ice in your demo for the title!
Norma Gail I drove my Trailhawk in 50 sm snow. No problem.
Same platform does not mean the same frame / body. They share the CUSW format(C-size, United States-Wide variant), that is all.
Too many people think that the Cherokee sit on the same frame, it doesn't. It's no where near and never has been.
There are some cars whose designs grew on me over a period of time. The new Mazda3 Sport is a good example; while I liked the sedan version, the hatchback version didn't click with me in the beginning. It is slowly growing on me now.
That said, this one just doesn't quite do it.
But isn't everything better than the Patriot?
I'd like to see an offroad/snow driving comparison between this and the 2014 Subaru Forester XT with X-mode. Might need to put some better tires on the Forester to make it more fair though since the OEM all seasons have no offroad capability though.
Ok I have to speak up. For most of you who have no clue what your talking about let me enlighten you. This vehicle is not the old Cherokee, it is the replacement for the liberty nitro segment. It is based on a stretched dart platform. When fully loaded this vehicle offers more than any vehicle in it's class for around the same money and in some cases less. Everything I have read in the comments just proves that people always attack what they don't understand. Research or better still drive one before you make your uneducated comments. This vehicle is designed to compete with the escape, rav 4, crv. As for the 9 speed transmission, you barely even notice it shift, it performs flawless and makes amazing fuel economy with the tiger shark or the pentastar. Oh and as for the evoke, they tried to beat Chrysler to the 9 speed and lost. Let's see what you all say when they finally introduce their 9 speed.
Nice trailhawk!
Wanna revisit them sometime?
Several of us have finished Hells Revenge without issues, and a few have done Kokopelli and other trails usually reserved for modded lifted vehicles.
Gonna have to face it TFLC, these little buggies can REALLY get around lol!
Really want this beast
Live in Chicago. Love the styling and abilities of the Trailhawk but lets be real - its Chicago. So what would you suggest. Go with the Trailhawk or 3.2 V6 Latitude?
Love the review guys! Even the Patriot is too expensive. I wish you could get a proper Jeep off-roader for under twenty grand.
It's a sweet vehicle. I do agree change the name and Jeep probably would do great.
Hi guys I am JP from Miami Florida I got a question on this trail hawk is there been any recalls on these vehicles and your reviews are very nice and at the same time funny but in a good way very professional thank you and please get back to me JP Miami Florida thank you
+Juan Paulo There's a couple, the 9 speed is the big issue, but i love my 15' trail hawk, don't buy any early years
Is there a difference between the 2014 Sport model and a Trailhawk model?
at this price point wouldn't you cross shop the 4runner? mashup please
Compared to other fully loaded vehicles in its class the Cherokee Trailhawk has much more bang off your buck in quality and off road capability.
9 Speeds...that transmission is REALLY going to be working hard all the time.
it would be interesting if this was matched up against an 2005 outlander with yokohama ats tyres
Get some vacations, fly to UK and test some of SUV´s and 4x4´s they have!
would a forester be as good with its 50/50 awd and x mode? and it comes standard with 8.7 inches of ground clearence . or at least better than the north cherokee with only 8 inches?
You call that snow, come to northern Michigan in the winter for some real snow driving.
range rover #1
I live in Canada, so this is important to me...
Never thought they'd get out of that 1/4" of snow. What a great demonstration of the Dodge Darts off road capabilities! These guys are one rung up from used car salesmen.
You are an Ignorant fool
They have to put the Jeep Easter Eggs everywhere to remind people it is a Jeep. Otherwise one might forget! All kidding aside, the look is growing on me. I no longer hate it, I just dislike it.
This car is marketed toward those that might want to offroad, but only enough to do some light trails or get to a camping spot, certainly those that will never modify their vehicles. Anybody that is going to consider going off road with any sort of seriousness, is going to get a Wrangler. In fact, I checked a couple of local Jeep dealerships and found several Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon's for the same price (or less) as this Trailhawk.
If Jeep would have named it anything other than a Cherokee, then nobody would care, but they named it a Cherokee, and TONS of people are now talking about it! Love it or hate it, Jeep got everybody talking about the the new Cherokee.
Like a Jeep , with out the balls, history, rugged toughness.
I hope your old off-road trail gets fixed because this new location isn't challenging enough for many of the SUV/CUV's.
I agree to the mountain weasel extreme parking lot edition
I like the Cherokee but I would probably save some money and get a Jeep Cherokee Limited. As soft-road vehicles go, that version competes and even beats the best of them, though it isn't a hard-core offroad vehicle.
I'd love to see this thing on the Con! And s who the hell though they could drive it through. It's "Trail Rated".... good to go.... right?
Would one of these be able to keep up with a buddies Nissan Xterra?
haha id love to see that try the rubicon trail...
It did and made it, you ignoramus
Pretty decent car, more comfortable than wrangler and more sensitive than grand cherokee.
Being a former owner of a 98 Cherokee I also follow the line of I don't care for the looks, but could overtime get used to it. My biggest problem with it is "It's a Fiat" first and all the software issues with the tranny and wonder how long those issues will continue. If you research the problems the Fiat 500 continue to have it really makes me think that they made a huge mistake using fiat and nat a Jeep build.
Is this the 4 cyl or 6 cyl Cherokee Trailhawk? I didn't hear it mentioned in the video.
Does the 4 wheel drive kick in automatically with terrain or do you have to select the different drive options.
Yes, but the selector determines how soon it kicks in. In Auto it has to spin quite a bit before the rear gets power. In Snow mode, the rear kicks in much sooner. in Sport mode, it is fully engaged all the time. Traction control is completely turned off. Mud and Sand is also fully engaged, but I think there is some traction control. Rock mode top speed is limited.
What’s the largest tire you can put on it?
I really like when you guys review vehicles off road. You discuss the proper off road talking points for the most part. I would liked to have seen this vehicle on some tougher terrain, because I think we both know it could handle a little more.
I would have liked to have seen some discussion of independent vs solid axle, and maybe a touch of body on frame vs unibody. The people looking at this vehicle want an off road capable car, so might as well inform them right? These are small nits I am picking however, and I really do enjoy the reviews.
I own a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. All in I paid $42k, and that's almost fully loaded. For a difference of $4k I don't see why anyone would buy this vehicle instead if they planned to go off roading. Want more luxury and comforts? Grand Cherokee Overland or an LR4. Granted, at a higher price point, but they simply make more sense. Great review guys, and I look forward to the next one.
Ok guys! Can you please try to get your hands on a new Power wagon! I'm rolling over playing dead to see a video of this thing! One bad ass truck! The sand box toy Raptor is nice to have something to play with ! But the power wagon is something to play with and use as a real truck at the same time! I have a 05 power wagon! When your Raptor gets stuck in a mud puddle you'll wish you had a power wagon too! Trust me ! Thanks ! Love the vids guys! Keep them coming!!!!
The Easter egg is there because it it is the trademark for jeep. Aftermarket windshields do not have them.
they have already made a change to help the appearance of the vehicle by smoking the headlight lenses. the headlights are actually the middle row of lights. the front end is too odd looking with 3 rows of lights.
$38K in The US = $45K in Canada, I'd rather get a LR2 or a Benz for that price. And its Uglyyy too Nathan glue that paper on the front gezz what was Jeep thinking when they did this one on a Friday "Dress Down Casual Day"
Idiot it sold for $39,000 CDN in Canada. Before you comment at least try to get your facts straight.
does it has transfer case for low gear?
So why would you buy this over an Evoque?
$$$Money$$$
BKdesignandart Could be why but take resale, economy and the rest in - this won't cost a lot different in the end.
hung huge You left out repair costs in that. Maybe they have improved but rovers are know to break often and cost a lot to fix.
The milage is only one more in the city and 3 mpg on the highway. The Jeep also has a larger tow rating, more leg room, more cargo space, more shoulder room in front, longer warranty, and the new Chrysler infotainment system is really nice.
So 10,000 less , less expensive repairs and a much larger dealer network are all advantages for the Jeep. And for many people the Jeep name has some value as does Land Rover.
The Rover does make a lot more power and is a very nice care but in the end it will all come down to that Rover is more expensive.
David Siebert Repair costs? If you can afford to buy these new it's unlikely you'll keep it long enough for the warranty to run out and like I said - resale will make up a big chunk of if not all of that initial 10000. Especially with Jeep going for that new look.
$38k??? I could go get a more refined, better looking, and more off-road capable Grand Cherokee for that money.
think about it though. do you need something as big and thirsty as a Grand Cherokee?
38k does not get you very much grand cherokee for that jeep did a good job and priced the loaded cherokee a bit cheaper than the entry grand cherokee. a 4x4 limited grand cherokee is over 40k
BassRacerx The Grand Cherokee is more offroad capable, more space in the back, and looks much better. For 3k more I could get a Limited which has quite a good amount of creature comforts
but say good by to 30MPG Hwy, Park assist and other features the G Cherokee doesnt have.
Yeah, and the Grand Cherokee doesn't look like a Rav4 on estrogen supplements. Grand Cherokee and Wrangler are the only good looking Jeeps left.
Not bad. Would have been nice if it had adjustable air suspension. That would have made it even better off road. For those that are saying it looks ugly... get used to it. Gone are the days of boxy looking trucks and suvs.
oh subarus have locking differentials but uses brakes instead to stop the wheel from spinning!
