- Over the last few months I've been busy building a new pool room at the bottom of my gargen to house my pool table. The room is also an office but gives me a nice new space to make new videos for the Pool School channel. I often get asked lots of questions about my pool table and the room size required so I've given some facts in this video about things like that. Here is a summary of the things shown in the video:
Home built office 23x13.5ft
7ft English pool table - Supreme Winner
Hainsworth Precision cloth in Silver
Super Aramith Pro Cup pool balls
Supreme LED table light

Glad you're back dude! Can't wait to see new vids, especially this tangent/actual cue line ups!
Cheers
exactly, it makes so much easier to understand how the cue ball control works. much better than many other pool tutorials on youtube.
Good to see you back. I'd love if you could cover some rules on the channel as a new player, I see there are several different rulesets, as well as the classic "hand me down rules" we often get taught.
Thanks. Yes I'll definitely be doing some videos on rules.
Fantastic to see you back. New room looks great.
Just wanted to say thanks for all that you do, and congrats on the new room! With your help I just had my first 3-0 (EDIT 4-0!!!) night winning three (four) games using all the information you gave me. Of course I paid a bunch at the pub to lose a bunch before this, but your information really transformed my game and opened my eyes. Cheers and enjoy the room!!!
-Nick, amateur 8 ball pool player!
Cheers. That's brilliant to hear, so glad the videos helped.
My 7' bar table has 4" pockets with Simonis 860 so it's been a good practice table but I really want to up my big table game. I sold a 9' Brunswick Goldd Crown 1 about 15 years ago when I gave up the game for a bit. I really miss that table but just don't have the room. Glad u made the video!
Looks awesome , great build 👏 . I’ve just brought a new house with 6m x 6m bedroom, new pool room for my supreme winner 😄👍
I'm very happy to see you again. Really beautiful room. I think it's mean you will stop the strange grey color in the back :-) Less of job for your videos. Bye. Rémi
awesome looking room. liking the silver/grey cloths used on tables these days. it really brings out the ball colours, and its alot nicer to look at than the traditional blue or green.
also may I suggest adding some sound boards to the walls so it isnt so echoey, and it'll reduce the noise for your neighbours 😁😉
Oh I still prefere the green than the dull grey 😊
Congrats on the new pool room, bet the other half was happy to free up the kitchen 😂👏
Definitely!!
Yay!!!!!! Congrats on the beautiful new room!!!! Looks amazing!! Also, I LOVE the ball, black and white lines for reference. Amazingly helpful for this beginner. Regardless of what video you make, I’m sure it will be amazing! Cheers.😀
yes please keep doing the black and white lines! so useful
Good to see you back mate. Nice room, I've just had a cabin built for my pool table. Good tips. It's surprising just how much room is required. Love the lines, not so much the music, which in my opinion isn't needed, the drumming especially is annoying. Have you thought about sound proofing the table? I did and it's made a massive difference that everyone comments on. I used vinyl flooring in the pocket runners, upside down carpet in the main body and rubber matting in the collection areas, also vinyl along the sides of the main area and in front of the chutes so the ball doesn't hit there either, can send you photos if you're interested.
Thanks. Sorry you don't like the music, it's not something I always have on (mainly because everyone has different tastes anyway), but this was just because it was more of a "tour" video than a tutorial where I don't tend to use music. Yes I've done some similar things with the inside of my table with capret in the main body and collection area.
Lovely room. Look forward to more videos.
Lovely room, well done for DIY-ing. Risky having work and play so close together though!
Nice job you've made of your new man cave. Look forward to more video's.
Nice room. The position from the penultimate red was awesome. And that black was tricky. One which I know when the pressure is on for me becomes a 50:50!
Cheers. Yeah the black to the middle at an angle always add a bit of pressure.
As a fellow pool player and 3d designer/animator, this is pretty good!!!
Think it would be good to do some videos where you look at games you play vs someone else - you could flag what you did right/wrong, tactics, and general thought processes - kinda how some chess RUclipsrs do with their games
This would be a great idea
Yes I can look into that. I'd need to convince someone to be on camera first 😂 but sure I can arrange something.
@@PoolSchool if you're ever in Edinburgh I'll give you a game :p
I did offer! I'd be up for a day out shooting some video, hopefully give you a good game
@@PoolSchool i would be willing to come to you , i used to be in teh smae pool team as clint i anson and have my own pool room too
Can't wait you know is good playing understanding your cue ball path everything
Yay your back, what a fab build, well done !
Thanks
Awesome room, enjoy 😊
Thank you, I will
Hi, I have the same LED light and was wondering where you got the correct measurements for the distance or was this the best distance for your table? Thanks in advance. Ps, I have the same cloth and find it really does mark badly 😕
I just did a Google search but most pages seemed to be in agreement of around 32-36 inches from the bed of the table. That light is quite bright so you could get away with higher if needed. Unfortunately the finer the cloth the more likely it is to mark. I’d rather have to change my cloth more regularly and have that speed and control rather than have a hard wearing thicker cloth that is slow. Just one of those sacrifices you have to way up unfortunately.
I've watched a fair few of your videos, really well produced. I'm playing most days for a few frames at lunchtimes but the cues need new tips. Looking at getting my own, which should make a difference 🙏. All the best for the new year ahead
Cheers, yeah your own cue will make a big difference.
Awesome room setup 💯
Hi mate, been watching your videos for a couple of years now and finally getting a cabin in the garden to get my first table at home in the next few weeks! You used to have a diner table, which I'll need to go for. Could you offer any advice on what to go for/anything to avoid? Are different brands of significantly different quality? Will definitely upgrade cloth and balls from day 1 at least
Looking forward to the next video
All the best
Paddy
I have only had the one dining pool table and that is the only one I've played on as well so I'm afraid I can't really compare any of them. Mine was from Home Leisure Direct and was fairly decent. It was obviously not as sturdy as the Supreme Winner I have now but then that is always going to be the case with the shallower body of the table. I wish I could help more but I'm afraid can't!
Hi looks good earlier this year I was ill so made me think all work and no play so thinking of doing the same was wondering how to heat as would probably have to be by electric what are you using?
Thanks. My air conditioning also provides heat so I use that.
Just an FYI, when you say 9 foot table in the US, the playing area is a actually 8ft 4 inches. 9 feet refers to the actual length of the slate.
The new pool room looks great, I'm not sure how much work I would get done with a pool table right behind me 😏
Thanks, yeah can be a bit of a distraction!
Always wondered, could you play snooker on a pool table, maybe with 6 reds? Be good for positional practice!
I've tried it and it's nothing like snooker unfortunately as there just isn't the space. Certainly is a good challenge for positional play though.
Cool room, just wondering do you heat it in the winter months if so how long
Cheers. It’s my office so I’m in there everyday and need to heat it in the winter. My air conditioning unit also works as a heater so I use that.
if this room is 13.5ft by 23ft with a 7x4 table and you have just enought room on sides will a 15ft by 20ft be ok with a 7ft by4 table i have a 5ft cue
enjoying your videos and thinking of buying a 5m 4m garden room for a 7ft table. Is it necessary to use a 58 inch cue as opposed to a 54 inch cue? I think by my measurements a 58 inch cue would be a but tight for my room. Thanks
Just depends on where you need to hold the cue and your arm span. A lot of people hold the cue too far back (just because it’s a longer cue). You might be ok with a shorter one but would need to make sure you still have the full range of your swing.
Did you buy the garden room, and was it big enough? I was thinking the same, but obviously don’t want to spend all that money and it be too tight. Using a 58 inch cue
ive been thinking of doing this, how much roughly in price would something like that cost?
Nice-looking room. Does it have underfloor heating?
Thanks. No it doesn't, the air con unit is also a heat source.
Would’ve been good to see a video of the table being set up & levelled.
Nice building looks awesome, do you happen to have another channel for your 3d work?
Cheers. Yeah I do it's www.youtube.com/@SquashandstretchCoUk3D There's more on my website as well www.squashandstretch.co.uk
@@PoolSchool Thanks just subbed.
Decent looking room there, well done. I have a similar set up with a supreme winner also. 2 quick questions: Do you think the pro cup balls are worth it ,even if you already have a set of the Aramith standard balls? Secondly, did you consider the IPA used Strachan 861 worsted cloth or have you ever used a table with this on. Considering a re-cover next year. Many thanks.
Cheers. Definitely think the pro cups are worth it. I personally prefer a napped cloth but I’ve never played on that particular cloth so couldn’t really say.
Room looks awesome mate, is the tangent line the path the cue ball would take without spin?
Cheers. Yes if you hit a perfect stun shot so that there was no spin at all on the cue ball when it strikes the object ball, the tangent is the path the cue ball would take.
@@PoolSchool thank you
I have a bar box and have been thinking about doing the same so I can have a 9' Diamond. I play 9 & 10 ball primarily. Cost?
I'd rather not go into costs publicly if that's ok. I did all the work myself (with some help from my dad), apart from the electrics and air conditioning, so for me the main cost was materials. This will vary a lot from country to country though.
Just want to ask, for all your clearances do you find the cut break easier or tougher for a good start?
I don't really use the cut break, I prefer to hit the lead ball as ful as possible. I tend to find cueing more awkward for the cut break and any slight lift on the cue ball can see it come off the table. That's not to say it doesn't work for other people, it's just a personal choice.
Big fan of your videos, love the new pool room. Would you have any interest in designing a poster for different 8 ball rule sets? I would love to buy one for my pool room wall. A simplified version with 80% of the text removed, just the main rules for playing against friends. Could be sold to pubs as well. Just a thought, and you could be the man to do it!
Thanks. Yeah that's not a bad idea. The current ones are very wordy and not easy to understand. It's also not easy to simplify either though so would be tough to take out that much text. Worth some thought though.
@@PoolSchool Cheers. Maybe multiple posters, like a Top 10 rules to remember for this rule set. Ideal for competent players who just need to know the main quirks and specifics that apply, e.g. where you can break from; how many balls need to hit a cushion on the break; options for first visit after break; options for opponent's first visit; requirement for object ball to hit a cushion or be potted; skill shot; loss of turn shot; where cue ball can be placed after a foul; etc.
Looks amazing! Always wanted to do this. So the pertinent questions is - cost?
Thanks. I'd rather not go into costs publicly but I think I probably saved at least a third of the cost by building it myself. Materials are very expensive these days though.
Anything on safety play? Or maybe getting out of snookers?
I have made a video on snookers, but there is probably more I could do on safety play. ruclips.net/video/60559jRl26c/видео.html
Any more info on your led light ? What colour K is the light and how many lumens
Thanks!
It’s 33w, temperature 4000k and outputs 5000lm, hope that helps.
Great job on the room, is that an A/C unit on the wall as well
Thanks. Yes it is, even with all the insulation it gets quite warm when the sun is on the roof so needed it to make it a comfortable place to work. It’s also heats the room in the winter.
@@PoolSchoolits surprising how big a room you need to house a pool table comfortably, look forward to your upcoming videos 👍
I know you said no build Qs but what sort of roof did you go for? Hybrid roof?
Did you save much doing it yourself compared to a company
Yes it’s a hybrid roof. Look up “Oakwood Garden rooms”, he explains it several times on his videos. Hard to say how much I saved as I never had a quote for someone else to do it, but I’d estimate it probably saved me at least 50%
@@PoolSchool yes good videos. I fancy a garden room with the flat hybrid roof. Think I’d just hire the right nail gun when it comes to installing the cladding
Hi, im thinking of doing something like this myself. Could you tell me if you needed planning permission and how long it took to build please? Also what parts did you do yourself and which things you needed to get someone else in for? Thanks.
No planning permission required if you stay within “permitted development” guidelines. I won’t go into details as there is a lot to it, but you can easily look it up.
I did everything myself other than the electrics and air con installation which need to be done by qualified people.
@@PoolSchool ah cool so how long did it take to do then?
@@dannytyler8771 It was probably about 3 months in total. Would have been quicker but had to juggle work at the same time.
What r the measurements of the English 8 ball tables. They r basically like an American valley bar box to me?
I'm afraid I don't know what an American valley bar box is but the measurements for the English table are all on the video, about halfway through (approx 7ftx4ft external size).
Would like to see you play a pro race to 10 😊
😂I’d get thrashed!
great!
Can I ask what's your full name?
Could you post a link to the trolley you have under the table to move it?🙏
Unfortunately my partner bought it for me as a birthday present and I can’t find where she bought it from, sorry.
Lovely set of trophies in there, all pool trophies?!
They are, but nothing very impressive, mainly local lower league team winners and a couple of individual ones. As I've mentioned on the channel before I'm not that great a player but hold my own at local league level.
@@PoolSchool you seem a pretty good player to me. Ok, not Chris melling standard, but running racks with ease your good
Sir please tell me how you calculate 3,4 cushion shot how you calculate the angles
(I play 8 ball pool game on mobile i calculate the bank shot angle easily but 3,4 cushion shot 😵💫 please tell me sir) some time 2 cushion shot also 😵💫 please tell me bro 🙏
Howzit bud
Setting up a pool room of my own in the near future
Can you give me the dimensions of your pool table and the cloth you currently use.
Would highly appreciate it as I’m going for basically the same Table color etc
Ohh and can you maybe talk abit about cue tips on your next video?..
I came across a video in which the guy soaked a tip in milk
I tried it out and every game since has been going horribly wrong
So some advice on that too
The dimiensions and cloth details are all in the video
I also talk about cue tips in thios video. Never heard of soaking a tip in milk, sounds crazy to me!
ruclips.net/video/9WxcNOrPzps/видео.html
Wish I was successful enough to have my own table and entire room for it.
Could you make a video on intentional fouls?
Yes I'm in the process of making videos cover the rules for World rules, Blackball rules and International 8 ball rules.
That’s great I’ll be looking forward to it
How much did it cost you to build?
I'd rather not go into costs publicly if that's ok.
Hi can you tell me what size is you pool room please
I go through all the sizes in the video
I will watch all of it later
Inches? Feets? What are those?
Ha! Imperial measurements, I know it’s old fashioned but tables are referred to in feet so made sense to stay in those. In metric the room is 4.1x7 meters.
