StormRider - DisneySea's Regrettably Defunct Simulator Attraction

  • Opening with the theme park on September 4, 2001, StormRider was nestled at the back of ‘Port Discovery’ and whose show building made up much of the vista of the land. As a whole, it was a simulator on steroids, the next evolution of attractions such as Star Tours, but was it a worthy successor?

I was 14 years old when I rode Stormrider at DisneySea and was the last ride I rode before the park closed, it really was something special not just an average motion simulator attraction especially with the story and of course the fuse.
I returned to DisneySea and got the exact same reaction after riding SeaRider (the difference between the two is night and day.)
Right now the only thing I have left to remind me of that amazing attraction is the Toy plane (Tomica) of the Stormrider

I was lucky enough to to experience storm rider just once! It was soooo incredibly epic. Basically if you enjoy Star tours, basically was a large scale version that made you feel like a real life flight into a massive hurricane it felt like the worst turbulence you could experience in large aircraft! Not to mention that the practical effects used in the show felt legit and terrifying especially when the missile unexpectedly Bursts into the cabin! Honestly I wish the show was still around because of how few thrill rides there are in Disney Sea!

This ride was one of the most surprising! Very low expectations going in but it blew us away with its level of immersion and unexpected thrills! When the fuse burst through the cabin my whole party (all adults) was scared! Can only imagine how scary it must’ve been for kids who ended up on this ride. Haven’t been back for Nemo but it seems disappointing they wouldn’t do a similar gag like the fuse bursting through the ceiling. I guess it would be difficult as you’re under water

I was lucky enoguh to ride this in 2013. I knew nothing but the description on the official site and I gotta say I was really surprised how good it was. The fuse breaking through was amazing, panels fell off the ceiling, and at the end when you're crashing, the feeling of steep descent was amazingly believable! When I went I think I waited about half an hour to get in? The line was long, but the capacity made the line move in large chunk. I was like, the last one of my group to get in because I was alone and both theater were full! It was one of my longer wait of that day I think, but I went on a random chilly Tuesday in early December and I avoided Tower of Terror and Toys Story (and I skipped the Indiana Jones line as a single rider, lucked into walking by 'Journey' as they were opening, and won the lottery for Big Band Beat) so that's not saying much I think.
I think this ride would have been perfect for EPCOT!

This was, and still is, my favorite ride at Tokyo Disney Sea!
Captain Davis, the pilot of the Storm Rider we board in, spoke throughout the ride with humor and many fans loved him.
The music was also loved by many fans, so much so that it was played in the Disney on Classic 2017 orchestra event as part of the guest request selection.
I won't say that I want Storm Rider back, but I wish an attraction with the same kind of energy will take over that building as a true successor to the Storm Rider.

Journey to The Centre of the Earth is my favourite, but this was certainly one of my highlights - I rode it so many times during my visits, and the large capacity / low wait time meant it was a reliable way to fill time when there was a fastpass coming up in the day's schedule. I was very sad to see it go, and as you say, the replacement just doesn't have the same energy.

The one time I got to go on StormRider, the front screen didn't work - I don't speak Japanese, so what followed was a baffling experience of being shaken, sprayed with water, and then the Fuse piercing the hull, all in darkness, with the whole audience was laughing giddily at the insanity of it all. That said, it was still more entertaining broken that SeaRider was fully-functional.

What a wonderful ride! too bad it did not last. Seems a shame they wouldn't have retrofitted it into a re-imagined "20,000 leagues" or at least used the Atlantis IP ........just another amazing missed opportunity. But who knows, this park actually gets itself and its uniqueness, hopefully outside Disney's full control will allow them to explore these and other ideas in the future.

Huge shame such a unique ride is gone. I've seen ride videos of both StormRider and SeaRider, and while SeaRider is cute, and it cleverly uses a ride matrix like Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, StormRider felt much more like a perilous but epic adventure, fitting for a park like DisneySea. Sadly I only got to experience this ride once but I really enjoyed it, the pre-show and the ride itself. I too think it suffered from something that a lot of original attractions can suffer from, lack of knowledge about the ride from the outside, or not .being promoted enough as a big attraction compared to most of the other big attractions that are at DisneySea. I guess I was unlucky, because the 4 other times I visited DisneySea, the wait was over 1 hour and I didn't want to wait for it. I haven't been since SeaRider opened, but I suppose it was inevitable. 16 years is a good run for a theme park attraction

Now they have Nemo, Toy Story and soon a 'Fantasyland' section. Nemo was the first ride we went on and I really dont remember anything of what actually happened while on the ride, so I guess that say a lot about how good it was. StormRider from what I can see, looks to be the better attraction. Attractions are "weird" in any park. For example, Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room had to have a "barker bird" as did 1973's Pirates of the Caribbean in Florida, to "lure" in guests. But, it's always "fun to do the impossible" as Walt once said. When you are on the "cutting eDgE" there are bound to be mistakes made.

Q: What was it like experiencing StormRider?
A: People were screaming, children were crying, and I thought we were all gonna die! It was excellent!
I have fortunately been able to ride StormRider quite a few times before it was retired, and I always loved it! The cocky "American" pilot almost crashing your ship, the missile coming thru the ceiling, the panels coming loose and swinging violently over your heads, and the elements entering into your cabin - it was all amazing! I was really bummed it closed, but totally understand why. DisneySEA is crazy popular and can get crazy busy. StormRider was a walk-on on all but the busiest of days. Nemo, is a recognizable IP that fits well into DisneySEA, and the re-theme is cute and well done. It is fun for the entire family without scarring the kids for life! LOL What I love the most about it, is the multiple versions of the show that you get to see with different characters and scenarios similar to the new Star Tours. This attraction plays it very safe, and while its not as unique, thrilling and/or terrifying as StormRider was, it is a worthy addition to the park that continues to entertain lots of guests young and old.

  • @WFSH30228
    @WFSH30228 3 года назад +2

I've ride both and I definitely prefer Strom Rider more, Sea Rider is just too family friendly(you can even say it's only for kids). The only cons I could say for Storm Rider is that it doesn't has multiple random plot like Star Tour or Sea Rider, it's alway the same plot every time.
But Sea Rider is not even that popular(maybe slightly longer wait time than Storm Rider). Many Japanese fans critize that Tokyo Disny Sea is trying to become Disney Land with recent decade change, they put in too much Disney IP without proper backgroud story and remove many original thing which make Disney SEA feel like a one and only Disny park.

I think what could save it is if the design exterior wise was more enticing to enter.
Maybe have some mystery in the exterior that you want to know what is inside?

SeaRider is very cute but I consider it a pretty skippable ride. This looked so much better, with more intense motion and the practical effects seemed to add so much to the experience! And it doesn't seem like the update helped to draw in guests very much, Nemo rarely gets a long wait and doesn't even come close to the crowds at the other recent additions (Toy Story Mania and Soarin')
