The Walter recording with Ferrier and the VPO packs an undeniable emotional wallop, and I love that one as well, but I still think this one is the best recording of the work that I've heard. The orchestra's great, Haefliger's great, and Mildred Miller's singing is cool and serene.
What would life be without Mahler's music? There are certain great symphonic works without which life would be less livable. This is one such great opus. The passion and pathos is so rich and I'm stretched to declare this to be Mahler's greatest work.
Was this formerly attributed to the mythical Columbia Symphony Orchestra? At any rate, you should hear the MUCH improved XR sound at Pristine Audio, where Andrew Rose (no relation to Axel Rose) restores ancient recordings.
My absolute favorite recording of this work. Luxurious and furious!

This is a unique performance where Das Trinklied sounds almost like a dark atmospheric dance! Brings an entirely new dimension to the piece...
Thank you for posting. Brilliant performance.
One of the best recordings EVER (not only this work)! Pure miracle!
This was Mahler's 9th piece of work in preceeding his 9th symph which he did not perform
having died in 1911
