Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016) was an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler.
Haggard was born in Oildale, California, during the Great Depression. His childhood was troubled after the death of his father, and he was incarcerated several times in his youth. After being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he managed to turn his life around and launch a successful country music career, gaining popularity with his songs about the working class that occasionally contained themes contrary to the prevailing anti-Vietnam War sentiment of much popular music of the time. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, he had 38 number-one hits on the US country charts, several of which also made the Billboard all-genre singles chart.[1] Haggard continued to release successful albums into the 2000s.
Connie Smith (born Constance June Meador; August 14, 1941) is an American country music artist. She is considered one of the most influential female country artists of all time. Discovered in 1963, Smith signed with RCA Victor Records the following year and remained with the label until 1973. Her debut single "Once a Day" reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in November 1964 and remained at the top position for eight weeks. The song became Smith's biggest hit and was nominated at the Grammy Awards for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Smith's success continued through 1960s and mid 1970s with nineteen more top-ten hits (including "Then and Only Then", "Ain't Had No Lovin'", "Cincinnati, Ohio", "I Never Once Stopped Loving You" and "Ain't Love a Good Thing") on the country songs chart.

    Lyrics:
I'll probably never see you eye to eye again
This letter's meant to be my last farewell
But you need to under-stand I'm nearly crazy
You need to know my life has gone to hell
Write me back and tell me why it ended
Send a letter that I can show my heart
I'll be somewhere between "I love you" and what you're feeling now
Lookin' for a place to fall apart
Looking for a place to fall apart
Trying to find a place that I can leave my heart
I need to be somewhere hidin' when I feel the teardrops start
Lookin' for a place to fall a-part
I can't seem to justify your leavin' me
I'm be-wildered as to how it all came down
I thought everything was fine until your phone call
The call that turned my world around
Send me word and tell me why it ended
I need some final proof to show my heart
I'll be somewhere between "I love you" and what you're feelin' now (I love you)
Lookin' for a place to fall apart
Looking for a place to fall apart
Trying to find a place that I can leave my heart
I need to be somewhere hidin' when I feel the teardrops start
Lookin' for a place to fall a-part
Looking for a place to fall apart
Trying to find a place that I can leave my heart
I need to be somewhere hidin' when I feel the teardrops start
Lookin' for a place to fall a-part

I sure miss the country music from the 80's. It had class then. I miss Barbara Mandrell, Tammy Wynette, George Jones and many others.

There's only one way you can improve a Merle Haggard song and that is to add the inimitable Connie Smith.
