  • Is learning guitar hard?
There's no clear answer to "is learning guitar hard". Science just doesnt know. But it's the question that people starting off learning guitar or wanting to learn wonder most, other than maybe "how long does it take to learn guitar", but same thing.
And if you're learning guitar, or have in the past, or if you want to, I'd love to hear your opinion. Because I feel like people's perspective on this question changes a lot depending where they're at in their learning guitar journey.
But to put it simply, learning how to play guitar is as hard as you want it to be. It depends on how you define "playing guitar" and what your guitar goals are.
For example, if you want to learn how to play a few songs so if you see a guitar at a party or just, around, you can play something, you can do that fairly quickly.
And honestly that's really not a bad place to start. At first if you only know how to play one or two songs, I wouldn't really call that "knowing how to play guitar", as much as knowing how to play one or two songs. But if you learn one or two songs 5 times, you're well on your way to being a guitar player. While I do think it's important to learn the fundamentals if you want to become a more advanced guitar player, I don't think that means you HAVE to start with them.
And there is an argument about if you rush that you'll develop bad habits. But bad guitar habits are better than no guitar habits if you just stop playing after a week , to an extent.
Anyway, in the video I discuss my experience as someone who learned guitar online, my progress, and more.
    Thanks for watching :)

Then for some reason you have an off day and can't hit it right at all but you stop take a break for a bit and come back and it works again.

I've been playing guitar for 10 years but only started playing seriously when I got out of college like 2 years ago. I love it. I'm so glad I decided to put in the time to actually try to get better and grind through the sounding bad part. Starting to really feel confident in saying I can really play guitar. Spent a year trying to learn 40oz by polyphia and to see the progress is awesome. My sweeping still sucks in comparison to tim henson obviously but I'm leagues ahead of where I was last year. And next year I'll be even further towards my goal.

I've been playing guitar for almost ten years now (since i was eight) and im completely self taught. The hardest thing is not getting discouraged and telling yourself to pick it up even if it seems impossible. If you ever get stuck, look back on those times that you didn't even know how to hold a guitar and see your progress. Not everyone learns at the same pace so keep going, you got this.

think it gets harder the better you become

  • @christianshook6025
    @christianshook6025 2 года назад +6

Yeah, I think the first year is the hardest because you have to put in so much effort for so long before you actually start to get comfortable with the instrument. It’s a complicated instrument for a number of reasons in my opinion. For example, if you ask even a beginner piano student to play notes C, F, then A, they could probably do it almost without hesitation, on guitar however, this task can be very challenging to someone who doesn’t have a firm grasp on the layout of the fret board, which is a lot of stuff to remember. On piano, you really only need learn how to build chords and can basically play any chord you can think of, on guitar however just building chords on the fly is nearly impossible for most players who aren’t pretty advanced so the only viable option is to memorize chord shapes and there are 40 chords of them just in all 12 Major keys, that’s not even touching sus, augmented, 7s, 9s, etc. It can be challenging, but anyone really can do it, and I promise you it’s worth every bit of the effort you’ll put into it. Once you get over that hump and learn some 1,4,5s, a few scales, and a couple songs, you begin to enjoy it, and once it starts to get fun, you’ll start to practice a lot more and your progress will accelerate exponentially and before you know it you’re a real musician explaining this stuff to other people who are just beginning their journey just like you all those years ago.

Been playing since early February, and you've been a huge inspiration. I agree 100% with enjoying it first. I started with Justin Guitar (thanks for introducing me btw) but after I got through most of his beginners course (was very frustrated with practicing at this point), and was honestly quite bored, i started trying to learn some songs I liked. I learned a few more chords that way and since then have really enjoyed playing/practicing. Now I have some momentum, and I can really tell how much I've improved from the beginning. Thank you for all of your content. Watching your progression in your playing and your videos gives me confidence in my ability to improve.

I’ve been playing guitar for the past 2 months and I would say I’ve learned a lot by then like playing frets, improving on my guitar picking, and learning chords. I’ve just been using the resources that come up to me like Yousician, rocksmith, fenders play and Justin guitar. Using all of those helped get me a better understanding of playing the guitar a little bit more. For anyone who’s still trying to learn guitar I would recommend using all the resources that you have. Look into them, play with them, do a little bit of lessons and keep on going. I’ve come to understand that I won’t master guitar right away as much as I want too but the good thing about learning guitar by yourself is that no one is forcing you to learn right away. Continue at your own pace but remember to stay motivated to play a few minutes a day. Set goals for yourself as well like learning 2 chords the end of the week, next week you can practice transitioning those two chords faster and so on. Remember it all takes practice and baby steps to get there where you wanna be.

The frustrating part for me is making the chords sound good. Whenever I play for example the C chord, my fingers mute other strings and I can’t seem to get the grip of it. I know I have to bend my fingers a certain degree but it’s super hard. If anyone with experience could give me a tip it would be really helpful!

One of the main thing that changed my playing was to press less hard on the strings with my fretting hand, it helped me desynchronize the strength i put i my hands. My Fretting hand is very relaxed and can move around very quickly while the plucking hand can hit very soft or very hard
I discovered that playing on a acoustic at very low volume (parents sleeping), playing almost not to be heard, my fretting hand was following the same strenght so thats when the light bulb came up, i realized i needed to keep that very minimal pressure and have more or less volume with my plucking hand

My guitar journey had some kind of rough start, I needed 3 attempts to get hooked. I think its super important to have something, like a song or at least a certain chord to look forward to. I always wanted to play electric guitar and to do "cool" stuff, so the first things I learned was the power chord. I wouldnt say that this was the right way to start, I would rather suggest to get yourself a "real" teacher (not in 2020 thanks to corona lol).
During the first few weeks, practicing sucks. Your hands are stiff AF, your fingers hurt from the strings, and your eye-hand-coordination does not exist. So to survive this torture, you really need something cool, which could be achieved in the nearer future.
I think the most important moment during learning is when you realize that you could practicially ANY song with your toolbox of chords and techniques. When you achieved this, you won´t ever stop playing :)

Each player is different. Some players can play fast others cant. Sone guitar players are more rhythm oriented others are into leads and there are some guitar players that can play everything. So it dependes on your personal talent and habilities.

so I've only been playing guitar for less than a year, and I was mostly self taught. I learned basic chords, messed around with them. I learned really weird where i didn't care how hard a song was, if i wanted to learn it i put in the effort to. I would recommend learning slowly at your own pace, and don't b like me and learn crazy on you by heart as your first song. I'd say I've improved tremendously, but that's mainly because I practice a lot. don't learn guitar if you just wanna b cool or sum. learn because you genuinely enjoy playing, because if you like playing you're more likely to practice more if you absolutely despise it lmao

Lol I once before played the arcustic, 8 years ago for 2 or 3 months. I was eight and always wanted an electric, keep in mind I was OBSESSED with Angus Young (still am 😋), so that was the whole reason for my guitar wish.
So after 3months arcusting I was done with that shit because I haven't even learned one song and I didn't want to go playing children's music.
Now 8 years later the wish came back by getting into Guns'N roses, after I ended my 5 year long Rap and pop phase (not proud of that)
I then talked my parents into getting me an electrical wich I will get soon.
A few days ago I was like "i really wanna learn that enter sandman part"
So with only the knowledge of E A D G H E , I sat down with my old arcustic.
It took me over an hour for being able to 20sec...hahaha
It was like the part before "somethings wrong shut the light"
I'm proud of myself though Hahahahah

Assuming i already have some good music theory down, how hard would it be to learn the guitar?

  • @ravitsunami2000
    @ravitsunami2000 4 года назад

I find learning the play the guitar to be an incredibly rewarding experience, but without a direction to take your practise in, it can be a bit tricky to get motivated to practise. I jumped into learning guitar because I more or less thought 'I like the sound of good music and I want to be good at making the good music noises', and I'm now realising I really don't know what genres or songs I want to play. It's a bit of a funny situation to be in, and I wonder if anybody else is in it. I'd love to hear some suggestions from people who have gone through this before!

i’ve been playing guitar for 3 and a half months , i know all the basic chords and chords such as cadd9 , em7 ,am7 etc etc i can play about 40 songs some finger style some strumming but now i don’t know what to do , do i try barre chords like is this not too early for barre chords (bare in mind because quarantine i play between 2-6 hours a day but now i feel stuck like i’m not improving 😫 helppp

I don't think it's too early at all!! I picked up my guitar for the first time 4 weeks ago - learned off youtube for 2 and then I have had 2 lessons with my guitar teacher since. He introduced my first barre chord on the second lesson, it was so hard to begin with but after a few days it gets much easier! I think you should try :)

I almost quit after a week. I spent 7 days practicing a,e,g chords and finger techniques. It’s was almost as fun as studying for a calculus exam. So the following week. I learned to play songs I actually want to play. Fundamentals are why most people quit. Learning guitar is hard, but it should stay fun. Fundamentals are why people quit

I bought a guitar like a month ago. Now have been practicing for 3 weeks and man it’s fun and Justin guitar...... he’s just great. But I think that I’ve might have started out a bit wrong. The first week I started by learning “nothing else matters” with Marty Schwartz and because of that the first lessons felt so dumb and unnecessary. But now I really feel like this is what I want to learn. And actually Corona is a great thing for me to happen now🤭

I think the perception for a lot of people is that learning guitar is easy. They come to this conclusion because they see shirtless long haired rebels void of morals playing perfect solos and riffs and compare them with well suited well dressed and smart looking concert pianists so they assume guitar is easy. It’s not the case. And this is why guitar has a 90% fatality rate of those who quit within a year.

    Learning guitar was TORTURE. 😱😫
I was born prior to 1995; therefore, I wasn't defecated from the womb already imbued with 10x the talent of Beethoven crossed with Carlos Santana, like everyone else. Back in the 70s, there were only about 4 other ppl in my entire school who played guitar, or had guitars and were learning to play. Someone brought an acoustic to school once, and they let me walk around with it in the commons area during lunch, cos, yknow, I used to enjoy acting like an idiot in front of ppl. 😜 Still do...but I digest...
I remember ppl then were SUPER impressed that I could play a G chord. Ppl were like, "Wow, how do you do that?", and "Dude, do that AGAIN". I'd strum a G chord, which was 98% of everything I knew how to do on guitar at that point, and dudes would look at me all "I had no idea this dork was THAT COOL", and chicks would look at me like they wanted to yank my clothes off and devour me.
Now, every 11-year-old you see in Walmart can shred, and they know music theory inside-out, they can play 100x better than Steve Vai, etc
