Coming of age in an 'uncertain world?" Tell me a time when it ever WAS certain! The ending of the picture highlights that - the audience is primed for a 'happy ending' as the two lovers escape from the church for what the viewer imagines as a love match made in Heaven, only to have Buyer's Remorse hit them like the proverbial ton of bricks.. Of course if it had been made in the 80's or 90's we would have been treated to an endless number of sequels as the producers and studios greedily turned it into a franchise.
Short awkward kids with big noses didn't get the girl. They were comic sidekicks. Ethnic comic roles. Hoffman became a credible leading man and opened the door for a lot of character guys to stretch their resumes.
Also, in the 1960s you had films in colour for the first time and therefore blonde good looking actors were very popular, such as Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Michael Caine, Steve McQueen etc. Obviously blonde was a lot more appealing to dark hair as the colour could be fully expressed. It was also the era of the Californian blonde surfer. The scene when Hoffmann goes into the locker room to ask where the wedding is held shows the kind of types that would be leading men back then. You could call them jocks.
I was really looking forwards to this movie, but I thought it had just a stupid plot and conclution to it. Also the soundtrack got so tiredsome, repeating the same 3 songs over and over and over. Cineamtography and acting were great, and ms Robinson was a hot milf but thats pretty much it.
yeah love conquers all even breaking up your parents ! am I the only person who thinks that this movie is extremely boring ? and it's not about it being morally wrong they did not succeed at building the anticipation there was not even a single moment when I said oh snap they gonna get caught ! or what a beautiful love story ! you just don't care for these characters even the fear of coming of age was not the well protrude in this movie they did not explore it enough and despite introducing the theme for the first time they did not capture the intensity of emotions fear and uncertainty are way more powerfull when you are in that age for me it's a wasted opportunity!
This is an amazing movie, especially the ending.
classic film in my top 5 of all time
the way this movie has alot to do with my life is mind blowing
Masterpiece.
Ebert said he grew out of this movie, but I agree it's more or less timeless
I need to watch this movie!
