A good episode! This series really holds a special place in My hearth!❤❤❤
Well does anyone remember the first episode of the Justice League where Batman says “Hawkgirl, what she doing here” when maybe they should have done a episode on How Batman met Hawkgirl and the villain or villains could be Catwoman or Penguin or Shadow Thief or the Gentleman ghost as Paul Dini wanted to use him and have Patrick Stewart to voice him.
I’d love to see reviews of Justice League.
I honestly do like it when Batman hast to face some thing supernatural. The character is, by nature, a more grounded force, but uses his brain to win the day, just as much as anything else. I like that Batman essentially graduated from protector of Gotham to member of the justice league.
Klarion makes appearance in Young Justice, in the 4th sesson starting I believe in E9 Odnu!
Although many fans, including the Nostalgia Critic himself, don't like this episode, arguing that the supernatural aspects of Klarion and Etrigan don't fit with Batman, I respectfully disagree. Not only does it make sense to see Batman collaborate with Etrigan (since both characters live in the same city), but it's also quite fascinating to see the dark knight being forced to fight an enemy like Klarion, who, despite being just a child, is a threat that is completely outside of Bruce's comfort zone and possesses such extremely dangerous powers that he could even make a fool of Ra's al Ghul. In fact, it can be seen in "Batman Beyond" that Bruce still remembers Klarion with fear.
I didn't mind this episode since by this point they already had Lazarus pits, so it wasn't just introducing magic out of nowhere. I don't mind magic as long as it has clearly defined rules.
I can understand it, BTAS and TNBA are both relatively grounded. There is Avatar, and Ras in general, as episodes that dip into the supernatural. But in general the show is far more grounded that literal wizards using rhyme to cast literal spells. Personally I grew up on brave and the bold so this doesn’t phase me at all, but I do think etrigan is more of a DC character then a Batman character if that makes any sense.
Right? I mean they are fine with a guy made of living clay, or a talking crocodile man
I think Etrigan is misunderstood
@@mlp_firewind8129 Plus most of those haters don't realize that this Batman shares the same world with Superman and Doctor Fate (a magical hero).

It's truly sad the actor who voiced Klarion in this episode died shortly after playing him. He truly captured the personality of the iconic Witch Boy, being on the same level as Thom Adcox-Hernandez, Klarion's voice in most media
For many years, I thought it was Stephen Wolf Smith who voiced adult Mordred in Justice League. Apparently, it was Dee Bradley Baker.
Rest in peace
He was pretty cool as the phantom I got the DVD
Yeah, RIP Stephen Wolf Smith, another actor, passed away from a young age almost close to his 40s.
RIP
I like to think that the reason Klarion calls Etrigan "Uncle Jason" isn't simply because such familiarity pisses off the Demon, but because deep down the Witch Boy enjoys his company every time they meet and even considers him a father figure to hang out with. That being said, the relationship between Klarion and Etrigan would be one of the few in which the villain has for the hero an affection that is not caused by s*xual attraction and/or a prior intimate past with them
I would hope not, ew.
@lain iwakura Klarion isn't actually a child but yes , it would still be kind of icky
I will also point out that, in a lot of families, children often do call close friends of the family who are older "aunt" or "uncle" as a sign of respect (I know I did, and I'm hardly the only person I know who did.) So I always took it as Clarion sort of mocking Jason by being respectful in address even as he is showing his contempt for him.
Oh, I've seen this kind of interaction before now. If writers can create two people who sparkle in their antagonism, you've got yourself a terrific hero/villain pairing. Remember the episode "The Man Who Killed Batman"? During one of his heists, the Joker realizes that Batman isn't coming to stop him and wearily tells Harley to put down the jewels she's lifted. Somehow, stealing isn't any fun without the Bats around to foil him. Remember when Megamind "killed" Metro Man? With Metro Man dead, the blue villain was bored witless. So he created Titan to fight against and, for a while, he was thrilled. When they got into their first sparring match, Megamind cried, "Oh, I have MISSED this!" How about when Angelus and Darla (Angel: The Series) were escaping from a witch/demon hunter? Angelus observed, "Shouldn't we be killing Holtz now?" Darla replied, "He's practically family!"
@@princeblackelf4265 I'm pretty sure Klarion was originally just a kid with magic powers, and it wasn't until Young Justice that he was made into a Lord of Chaos
Robin: "About tonight..."
Batman: "Don't ask. Just don't ask"
*Fun fact:* The DCAU's Klarion would reappear many years later in the Batman Beyond comics as Klarion the Warlock, being part of the sorcerers recruited to stop Brainiac's invasion of Earth. It's cool to know that our favorite emo pilgrim wasn't locked in that glass sphere forever. 👍
I'm looking that up now because that sounds like a fun read.
EDIT: You forgot to mention he had a glow up.
Which issue is that?
@@jlev1028 Batman Beyond Universe Vol 1 6
Etragan: "Mother's grief, father shame, I will send them from whence he came."
Robin: Where's he taking him?
Etragan: "I'm sending him to his room!"😊
I still use this line to this very day!
Jason Blood: "Gone. Gone the form of man, rise the demon, Etrigan!"
"GONE GONE THE FORM OF MAN NOW RISE THE DEMON ETRIGAN." so damn cool love this episode.
This episode's cool with magic, demons, witches, demon cats, and Batman helping out Jason and Etrigan. "Gone, gone, gone the form of man. Rise the demon, Etrigan!"
Tim: "Okay, so I've seen the old junk. Now can I go play some videos?"
Bruce: "The whole point of bringing you here was to keep your away from those games for one night"
I remember having a DC Christmas issue, just one shot short stories for the holidays. One was an Etrigan story; a man performing a demonic ritual on Christmas eve, Etrigan appears and holds out a bag, offering whatever he wants in exchange for his soul. At that moment the man’s daughter bursts in and mistakes Etrigan for Santa so she reaches into the bag and pulls out a Batman doll. Etrigan quips “Nice doing business, see you soon!” and vanishes, leaving the girl to ask her father why he’s crying.
I personally never considered this episode to be one of the best TNBA entries, but I've always found its animation style stunning and very fluid. It also introduced me to Jason Blood, Etrigan, and Klarion.
What I love most about this episode is the fact that they directly adapted the original Klarion created by Jack Kirby in the 1970s. Although the later depictions of the character are pretty good, nothing could beat the white-skinned evil teenage brat obsessed with eating candy and committing antics from Kirby's comics. That said, it's a shame that the original Klarion made very few appearances before being completely rebooted with the post-Crisis continuity. It is at least a consolation that Jack Kirby's Klarion was featured in TNBA and other animated shows like "Young Justice" and "Justice League Action"
Yeah, I was surprised the video didn't at least mention Clarion has a huge part in the last Young Justice season.
Something pretty interesting about this episode is the conversation Klarion and Tim share in the opening scene, as, in the comics continuity, both boys actually get along pretty well despite their different moralities, with Klarion even openly calling Tim his friend. That said, I wonder if Klarion ever told Tim about that time he kissed his girlfriend Stephanie Brown...
When was this?
WHAT?!?! That’s awesome, I never knew they had a dynamic in the comics, Klarion is one of my favorite DC villains.

@@derekstein6193 no, its not.
@@saphcal I adore cherries, but I seriously can not stand anything cherry flavoured, they're easily the worst common flavour you'll find.
Fun Fact: Etrigan also appeared in the last issue of the 2004 Batman Strikes comic which revolves around the Riddler nearly unleashing Demons in Gotham.
Batman(Terry McGinnis) later meets Etrigan in the Batman Beyond tie in comics
Old Bruce also indirectly mentions Klarion and Etrigan in the Batman Beyond episode "Revnant"
I like how Batman defeats him basically just from being taller than him.
Like, look at him trying so hard to grab it, but he can't, because he's short! 😂
Had no idea Kirby created these characters. That artist was a force of nature. It's so heartbreaking to me he never got the recognition he deserved in his lifetime and never got to see the fruits of his labor. Stan did. I can't imagine comics without Jack Kirby. He was the most important artist to ever pencil draw anything. From Captain America to the FF to X-men to the Eternals to...well, just about the entire Marvel lineup of today. Long live the King of Comics!
The Demon Within is without a doubt the strangest episode in all of BTAS. I could be mistaken, but I think this was the first episode that introduced magic into the show, not including characters and objects that are hinted to magic.
But as someone who's an absolute sucker when it comes to magic, I can't help but find myself enjoying this episode.
I don’t see how anyone could say the shenanigans in “Avatar” weren’t magical, but yeah, this was the first episode to openly say “it’s magic.”
@@jamesadamsfl I completely forgot about the episode Avatar.
The episode Zatanna introduced another major magical Justice Leaguer, pre-power creep.
@@WhiteFangofWar Well kinda. Zatanna did make her debut in the BTAS episode of the same name, but the thing is Zatanna didn't use real magic until an episode in Justice League. The one where Wonder Woman is turned into a pig. In the episode Zatanna, Zatanna mainly used magic tricks, sleight-o-hand or illusions to performs her acts.
@@WhiteFangofWar Yeah, pre-power creep. It wasn't totally clear in the episode whether or not she had actual magic then. You could argue she did with the ending, but it wasn't on display like it would be in JLU
Etrigan: "Mother's grief, father's shame; soon he goes to whence he came."
Robin: "What's that mean?"
Etrigan: "I'm sending him to his room."
Interesting to see straight up magic in Batman. This was usually avoided so far. Zatanna was show to be an illusionist and the Lazarus Chemical was just weird science.
It’s interesting, that the two other DC heroes that show up in the Batman, animated series, Zatanna and Etrigan, are both magic based heroes
But Zatanna didn't have any powers in BTAS, right?
It should be noted that this is actually a sequel to a BTAS annual comic book where Batman first met Jason/Etrigan while facing off with Ra's Al Ghul
I think it’s episodes like this that really highlight just how versatile Batman is. Yeah he started out as a relatively grounded detective story but it’s virtually limitless what kind of situations you can put him in. Magic, science, alien attacks, you name it Batman’s faced it!
The fact that Adam West is just as celebrated as Kevin Conroy, Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, etc... as Batman proves how versatile the franchise is. Not to mention being top tier in almost every medium: comic books, graphic novels, movies, TV, live action, animation, video games, etc...
I love everything about Klareon. He's always been a personal favorite. Just a bratty chaos lord with immense powers, a bratty attitude and a kitty named Teakle. Also, loved it when you called him Majin Etrigan. Got an unexpected laugh out of me 😂
This was one of my favourite episodes and the wizard duel is easily my favourite scene
Ok so ive seen the old junk. Now can i go play some videos?
It warms my hearth to see tim acting like a normal kid his age❤❤❤
Klarion's best appearance is probably in Young Justice, he's so demented yet somehow so lovable 😂
Meow
Dang it
Be gone, be gone the form off man, Rise the demon Etrigan!
I remember being so confused when I first saw this episode 😅 I've come to appreciate Jason Blood and Etrigan much more in the years since and especially after his appearance in Justice League.
Surprisingly I first saw this demon in the Harley Quinn Valentines Day Special. He was quite funny in that.
Bat-May Day 25.
A great BATMAN episode with supernatural elements.
Etrigan is my favorite DC character , and im pretty sure this was my first exposure to the character , so this episode is pretty special to me
Billy Zane, who was also the original voice of Ansem, Seeker of Darkness in the Kingdom Hearts series, before being replaced by Richard Epcar from KH II onward, even re-doing some clips from the first game.
I don't think Klarion is in a crystal ball, Etrigan said he'll send him to his room, you can see he's in a corner of a room probably for a "time out" the crystal ball is only for monitoring I think
How fortunate that neither Bruce nor Tim made the serious mistake of calling Klarion "emo pilgrim" during the battle. The reaction that this nickname provokes in the Witch Boy is similar to Josuke's every time they make fun of his hair...
It's probably one of the best episodes. That's sad that they didn't use him more but they liked that the used him in justice league
Billy Zane voiced Jason Blood and Etrigan The Demon, which is pretty impressive, considering that this isnt his first appearance in Superhero related media, as he played The Phantom in 1996 film of the same name.
yes the video mentions this.
This episode is one of few instancesof Batman and magic combining neatly. Punishment of Klarion always will give me a good chuckle. He really deserves some time to rethink his actions.
These videos premier literally when my first break of the day starts at work. I look forward to them every morning 💯
Etrigan would return in the Justice League episode "A Knight of Shadows".
The amount of respect Timm/Dini had for Jack Kirby was unbelievable.
He was The King for a reason
Seriously through out the DCAU if a character was a Kirby creation you could tell just my looking at them they really captured his unique style
@@rodimusriderv2368 esp the 4th world, aka the new gods of new genesis and apokalips; orion,darkseid,highfather,kaliban,forager....

Truely a magical and diabolical episode and the morgan le fey refrence is a future callback in Justice League
Several years ago I was reading about the (IRL) origins of Etrigan. His design was based on a disguise worn by Prince Valliant in his comic strip. Valliant's mask was made out of a duck or a goose, and the "wings" on the side of Etrigan's head were the bird's feet.
This is my favorite episode of BTAS and the DCAU in whole. Klarion is also my favorite DC character due to this episode and his appearances in Young Justice. I’m determined to get the figure of him that comes in that two pack with Etrigen as it’s the only official Klarion merch I’ve found. Seriously he needs more love and recognition.
I love the supernatural DC characters Clarion, Constantine and Jason Blood/Etrigan shame Constantine was not in this episode
My first exposure to etrigan was The Brave and The Bold, he looked cool there but way better here in the DCAU. As for this episode, it's pretty cool
I haven't seen this episode either, but i know this character from Dcau animated Movies and i have to say that i really like etrigan , also because of his cool back story and poems
Love that you called him "Majin Etrigan"
"Spend most of your life ruled by another. Watch your race twindle to a handful. And then, tell me what has more meaning than your own strength!"
I'm not really a Vegeta fan these days, but Majin Vegeta had some good lines.
How have I never heard someone make the joke about "Majin Etrigan" before now?
Always loved this episode, made me a fan of Ertigan, Jason Blood and Klarion ever since.
Etrigan: "Mother's grief. Father's shame. Soon he goes to whence ye came."
Tim: "What does that mean?"
Etrigan: "I'm sending him to his room."
Me: LMBO XD
It is funny to show that he doesn't have to rhyme but likely does it because he enjoys it.
This is literally my favorite episode of the series. Being a huge fan of DC's supernatural characters, it knocked me off of my feet to see Jason Blood/Etrigan in th this episode. Even to this day, there's aclip on RUclips I watch just to hear Blood say those special words that bring forth Merlyn's Demon. Ahh, just like butter, baby!
Also, funny enough, I was introduced to Etrigan through an episode of JLU where some of the core Leaguers have to be turned into children to infiltrate Mordred's lair. I was also introduced to Klarion through Young Justice where he had a more chaotic personality.
It is interesting how different this Klarion is from the one in Young Justice. Here while he acts like a brat there's still a level of sophistication to him, both in his voice and the way he speaks, while in Young Justice where he's reimagined as a Lord of Chaos, he acts and sounds just like a brat, often speaking in an almost incoherent manner. Personally I prefer this version where he's just a really powerful magic user as opposed to basically an all powerful god.
Right? YJ was my first exposure to the character and then seeing this more restrain mischief maker was something
I like that Batman TAS dive a bit more into the mysticaland supernatural elements, it doesn't even feel to out of place, especially even its explored more throughout the DCAU.
That TMS animation never fails to fill me with glee.
The transformations are Feat of Clay II tier, and there's a great sense of bulk and weight to Etrigan.
Love Etrigan, but my biggest pet peeve of his appearances in the DCAU is the absence of his rhyming: voluntary yes but denoting his station in Hell, so he’d always do it through thick and thin.
I truly Dig that Animation that TMS would do it’s a spectacle too see when BTAS would do this
I never put "Majin Etrigan" together. Dude has an M on his head and is under the control of someone, it was staring right at me!
one of my favorites episodes since it introduces etrigan so well
Klarion is undoubtedly one of the most underrated magical characters in comics. While many magic-practicing villains like Moloch are either simple braggarts who have much to learn or are just simple phonies who only know to perform tricks and illusions, Klarion is extraordinarily powerful and well-read in said arts despite being just a spoiled child. No doubt, with some maturity and more training (and maybe getting rid of his taste for furries, by the way), he could easily be one of the most powerful wizards in comic book history.
He get plenty love in young justice
My favorite visual from this episode is when Etrigan's mouth blast and Klarion's green energy ball collide. So well detailed.
I like Etrigan's other appearances across the different Batman media a lot more. The DCAU seemed to utilise him very little... much like most of the members of the Justice League outside of the big seven.
Such a fantastic episode. One of my comic books was an issue of Batman Beyond that a was a sort-of sequel to this episode and I've loved Etrigan/Jason Blood ever since.
Jason deserves his own show. Billy Zane's voice is so perfect for the character
I was waiting for this episode all month.
I forgot that Billy Zane voiced Blood and Entrigan this time and after one Google search in Knight of Shadows was voiced by The Pretender star Michael T Weiss.
What a episode.
First intro to Clarion and Etrigan. Concept is cool and Etrigan is pretty badass, though I prefer the more surly one from Justice League, rhyming is also badass.
New comment: I read a Batman & Robin Adventures comic a few months back that pretty much introduced Etrigan, and I think it was handled well with Jason Blood being an adversary of Ra's Al Ghul and Ra's trying to summon a demonic force via saying "Jack Kirby was the greatest" backwards.
This was a weird but good episode, and my introduction to Etrigan and Klarion. Funny how nobody at the auction batted an eye at him, just there with his cat, and hair that looked like horns. And apparently LOADED. I see this as the TNBA team going "Id Superman can introduce Steel, The Flash and a Green Lantern, we'll bring in someone WAY out of left field!" And bonus, Old Bruce calls back to this episode once on Batman Beyond.
This is APPARENTLY an episode I have never seen before of this show. Very surprised that Clarion never shows up again in the DCAU
Strawberry……kid has taste.
First comic I read with The Demon was the Hitman comics. It was the Ace of Killers story arch. Tommy made his first appearance in The Demon annual # 2.
Here's hoping that next year, Batmay continues with Batman Beyond.
Donald Shaltenpepper stars in Devastator 3 (4:05). You've gotta love the Schwarzenegger reference there.
I think this was also my first encounter with Etrigan. I've loved the character and any Batman episode where he deals with the more, mystical aspects of DC, like Zatana and John Constantine.
I'm surprised Batman didn't call Zatana to help him since dealing with magic is her specialty.
Since the battle is fought and won, Jason Blood with me is done.
The one thing that still baffles me is how the demon’s riming every sentence came about when he shows up on JL and JLU
lol Majin Etrigan. i was pretty mixed on this one. it was fun but it felt very very different from the usual stuff. like what's usually somewhat grounded in reality and we go face-first into magic
The only apperance of Klarion in the DCAU and sad hia VA passed...but man Teekal is one hot evil kitty lady
Majin Etrigan. Nice!
GONE GONE, THE FORM OF MAN!!!! RISE THE DEMON ETROGAN!!!!!!!!!!
Still awesome
Alright episode with some cool moments and elements.
Considering how we find out how Jason Blood has a centuries-long fued with Morgan la Fey, who created and/or owned that mystical branding iron, you'd think that would've came up at one point in the JLU.
I don’t love this episode but I don’t hate it either. I definitely put it in the middle at best. This episode could’ve been a fantastic Robin story but he spends most of it stuck at Jason’s home! That’s definitely a bummer for a Robin fan like myself. I like watching Batman and Ertigan work together but yeah I would’ve liked for Robin to play a bigger part in the story too. This episode will always be in the middle for me but I can definitely see why a lot of people like it for the spooky parts.
A 'demon' episode that isn't referring to Ra's Al Ghul for once. More prelude to Justice League material, though Etrigan's voice actor gets changed to Christopher Sabat.
I remember watching this episode on The Hub on my birthday
Etrigan/Jason Blood have been two of my favourite DC characters since i first him them on Batman The Brave and The Bold as is Klarion who was introduced to though Young Justice where he's played as a more serious threat as oppose to the childish imp he is here
I really enjoyed this take on them especially after reading the King's original run an issue of which, featuring the Witch Boy no less, im happy to say i own
I love Jason Blood and Etrigan the Demon! Both characters are so cool and they've made many appearances after this one. My favorite appearances are from Young Justice and Batman: The Brave and The Bold!
"Majin Etrigan" nice reference
This episode was when I first saw Jason/Etrigan and Klarion. I kept hoping Klarion would make another appearance but assume he spends the rest of the DCAU in the crystal ball. I enjoyed seeing Klarion again in Young Justice.
Etrigan definitely needs his own movie.
I remember fighting Klarion and Etrigan in DCUO.
Etrigan was a story mission boss and Klarion was a special Halloween Challenge boss.
I like how Klarion offers Etrigan cakes when they break into the bakery
Maaan your recaps are so fun to watch
This episode's neat in that you can see it as the broader weirdness of the DC universe starting to leak into Gotham proper. What was nearly unthinkable in earlier seasons of BTAS is starting to become the norm. (One wonders what kind of paperwork the incident must have created for Gordon.) It really sets the tone for the fantastic kitchen sink of Justice League, with its broad mix of gods, aliens and sorcery.
4:35 You should have picked an image of him in "Young Justice," because that's what I first know him from since I'm in the 21st century!!!
The magic element in this episode is a nice break away from the typical episode. It helps make it feel like Batman really lives in a world that goes beyond his own stories.
