It's wild to think that I originally made this terrarium 5 years ago... Time flies! I had a lot of fun with it back then and again with this video. I hope you did/do as well. Enjoy and have a great weekend!
You're one of the best creators. In terms of scope, design and video presentation. This might sound weird to alot of people but I think you acknowledge this which is videos that have an ASMR quality. Discussing plant and animal life is inherently soothing to us as humans I think and presenting the videos in such a way makes them both an educational and relaxing experience
These are the vids that got me to make big terrariums too, the jar terrarium videos originaly inspired me to make my own ones and improve and go bigger over the past 4 years👍 Now I have tryving ecosystems and some jars that have passed 1500 days too👍🙏🌿 Thank you tanner
AH, I remember this when you built it! Sometimes I forget I've been watching this channel for 8 yrs now...how time has flew Thank you, my friend, for another entertaining and inspiring video. I'll continue to be a long-time subscriber :)
I'm so impressed by your commitment but also your determination and skills, being a master craftsman of 34 yrs i watched you building Tony's home and yes im impressed! Very talented and very passionate about what you do, so sending respect and love from Glasgow Scotland 🏴, keep at it my friend!😎
I was inspired by your video back in the days, immediately went outside and collected some bottom of a forest in a jar. 2,5 years later its still alive and good, some species have died but the moss is thriving 🎉 the scape i made has mostly decomposed, might update it this upcoming summer 🤩 awesome to see and be able to smell the forest in the middle of cold, dark and long finnish winter.

My little terrarium has been doing good and this makes me want to upgrade it to a gallon jar. Thanks so much for the video. Love your attention to detail and to helping these ecosystems get their own spotlight. I loved watching this update. Blessings to you and your wife. ❤🙏🏻
@@SerpaDesign aw that makes me so happy! And guess what? I’m going a large commission right now. 4’x2’. I’ll let you know how it goes. It’s crazy how huge it is!
Love all of your work! I know you say the "update" videos don't do as well, I love them. Helps everyone know that some things get out of wack but can be brought back to beautiful with improvements! ❤
This was mandatory when I was growing up in school as nature/science projects, It only occurred to me that you are doing the same thing with these smaller project's. Now I'm thinking about all the small moss and ferns around my garden =P .
U can put small piece of food scraps in there every once in a while and have them decompose with help of all those animals and maybe you could add a couple of worms they can survive anywhere. I had a small terrarium that I overwatered and I had some worms in there. I forgot about the terrarium and after I opened it up I found the worm and it was doing perfectly fine.
@@SerpaDesign thanks, Scar wont be forgotten any time soon It’s nice to have your videos to watch, seeing you care so much about your animals and giving them nice homes. Even the littlest fish seem happy and cared for!
Wow Tanner, your Terrarium builds are truly impressive! I'm a big fan of moss too, and I think incorporating different varieties of mushrooms into your designs could add a unique touch. Have you ever considered creating a jar for ants or beetles? Darkling beetles would be a perfect match for the mushrooms you mentioned. And a neon terrarium with Green Pepe, Bitter Oyster, and coconut flower mushrooms sounds fascinating! Just a suggestion, but I hope you find it inspiring!
terrariums are awesome.... you got me hooked on this. I have a small moss terrarium & a 1 gallon Walstad aquarium with 2 shrimp and 5 zebra danio's that are thriving. It's a cool hobby!
Thank you for this video!!! I have the perfect container. I think I'm gonna finally give this a try!!! Thank you so much for all of your inspiration! I know I'll be referring back to this and other container videos.
Hi. We used to use jars like this to vacuum seal for chemistry. You don't necessarily need a gasket. You seal it with Vaseline around the lip, though in not sure how often you would have to do that.
Oh yeah, I also used one of these large cookie jars in a build I recently did. I added a big chunk of mopani wood from Petsmart as the centerpiece, then added a fern in the rear and several cuts of fittonia of varying size, then added some moss before covering it all with leaf litter. Then I added earthworms, springtails, dubia roaches, and some local isopods and small snails as the cleanup crew and other general life. The isopods ended up eating all the moss though, but otherwise the jar is doing great so far. The one thing I'm missing is millipedes, as we don't have that kind out where I live, and the one time I brought some home with me from a vacation, they ultimately did not survive long enough to reproduce.
This is inspiring me to make a terrarium myself! I have a lot of jars of different sizes. I never know where to get the plants though! I really love that ficus pumila :)
Fascinating!!!! There is supposed to be this guy who has a large terrarium he built back in the 1970s that is still going strong. I think he claims he hasn't had to water it since then either because it creates it's own atmosphere...but I find that hard to believe and my memory may be a little Off... Have you heard of a terrarium that does that?
I want to try this this spring. Also, could you do a post making a piggy bank/treasure chest in a aquarium or something else you think would be interesting?
Hey Tanner I was wondering, is it possible to use coconut fiber matting like about half an inch thick instead of the window screen that way it's all natural and it won't biodegrade it does biodegrade but it takes like hundreds and hundreds of years to degrade. just look at the coconut fiber that was found under the island in Maine where supposedly the big treasure was buried oak Island. and they've found coconut fiber from about 400 years ago and it still perfect it's like it was put down yesterday. so I was wondering is it possible to use like coconut fiber mat that you just cut to size for the container and put that underneath the charcoal layer and above the drainage layer? that way you don't have to use any product that's man made in your terrariums? What do you think?
Hey, could you create terrariums for the outdoors? I know it sounds weird, but as a challenge, different temperatures and so on. Maybe a tomato jar where slugs can't get into?
It's still beautiful xd and it's ingenious how the it designed mistakes happened but still awesome xd it's almost time for me to make my first one xd❤❤❤
Would snails do very well in an environment like this? Could potentially help to deal with the algae buildup. Also, I'd probably give up on ferns if they're the thing requiring you to do regular watering that you've repeatedly shown you're not interested in improving on. No judgement or anything; you are the way you are. It's useful to design your projects with your own character in mind.
I’ve always found Maidenhair among the most temperamental ferns. They can be thriving until one tiny change occurs then they can go _kaput_ seemingly overnight. They seem to be especially susceptible to a fern root disease/fungus. I’d be interested in knowing if yours revived.
Do you ever sell your terrariums to local buyers? You may have answered this before, but I'm curious! I know you sometimes take your projects apart since you can only keep so many, but your skill is so impressive! I have most of the supplies to get started, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a design. I went to a consignment store a few years back and they had closed terrariums for sale! I was a college student at the time, but i was so tempted to splurge.
You really should take everything, incl. the soil fresh from the local forest and add some tiny snails as naturally glass cleaner inside the Jar! Only living creatures and micro organisms are able to hold the system alive, which why you should try to surprized your self with plant´s and soil fresh from the forest instead from a super clean online shop!
I have a question about when u do ur maintenance... I always see that u switch out the plants if needed, trimming and such as u go, but how do u know if/when to replenish the critter stock? Can u tell from the outside looking in? From the smell when u open it? Or do u just automatically add a spoonful on the few occasions when u do these 'carings'?
If I do it's usually just a proactive measure, but truthfully they're not really needed after a certain point. They're most beneficial when a terrarium is first established.
@@SerpaDesign really?? That's something I never would've thought, that they would lose their "requiredness" after awhile! That's so interesting! Would the same be for a mushroom/fungus enclosure? Have u ever done one of those before? Sorry, spitballing a request while thanking you for answering my question (thanks btw!!) Anyway, love these update vids as much as the initial creation vids because it shows how worth it these projects really are long term😁
Beautiful. I always encounter Pythium (white cotton mold) in my terrarium. I try saving plants, but should I give up and start all over again with new plants?
I LOVE your designs. I want to set up a turtle tank with an 'Under the Sea- Atlantis- Aquaman" theme. I want to use statues that might be the wrong kind of plastic.
