Think about it, Link was there in the Fifty as one of the originators of rock. In this clip it’s the mid-80’s, and he’s still looking and sounding very contemporary, fitting in with punk, new wave, alternative. The other guys from the Fifties had even gone away or were distinctly nostalgia acts by then. Link never got old.

When I first heard this song, there were no distortion pedals, no digital delay, no monitors, just reverb on the amp and whammy bars on the guitars, try to imagine the impact of these heretofore unheard of sounds on the youth of the day. We would wait until the tune turned up on AM radio, which it did once an hour, and our heads would explode. Link Wray altered the musical landscape.

At 77 years old I was lucky to have heard this song in 1958 and could not get it out of my head. I used to picture vampires coming in my bedroom while this was playing late at night on my radio under my pillow. Wkbw came in clear and so did wprt so it was easy to hear this at all hours. May God have link do concerts in Heaven if I get there.

@user-tp7ny5xi3f Hey, I didn't mean anything by it, I was trying to be funny! As in, if you were 77 in 1958 and you are posting on this, that would mean you are currently well over 100 years old, and vampires are about the only way to achieve that! Meaning, "They (the vampires) got (bit/turned) you!" & that's why you're over 100 yrs old & posting on RUclips about the experience that started it!
Sounds like something my mind would conjure up as well.
Nothing terrible about it; I apologize if I gave offense.

At least he is in good company! There are others that have been snubbed by the "country club set" that is the hall of fame. And they represent some truly great music!

@@ronfullerton3162 True that. When I hung out with Link we talked about it and he didn't give a shit. He always just wanted to tear it up. At the time Quentin and Robert were trying to put him in movies and he just wasn't into that. A true guitar/rock n roll God. Money wasn't important but music was everything.

We know, evidentially from this video, who influenced Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and the badass guitar players of the generations that followed him. Link Wray also personified “cool” for generations. I wonder if he knew the influence and effects he had on so many?

So so simple but boy oh boy it hits you right between the eyes and gut. So so heavy, powerful, intense with such a swagger. How did he come up with this in the 50’s! Whenever I pick up a guitar that has a fat dirty nasty tone this is the first thing I play.

Went to see Link Wray at this outdoor restaurant/event place in the mid-2000s. He never made it and two weeks later the news came out he was dead. As sad as that is, the opening act also did rockabilly, including Rumble, to make us not regret coming and it was still a nice evening due to them. Part of me thought Link had health problems at his age, not 100% but saddened at the news of his passing.

Link was a freedom fighter and wasn't a fan of the US Government for many reasons. The ban was removed and radio stations all over America played it as it should have been. Freedom 💥🇺🇸💥🇺🇸💥

Saw Link at the Double Door in Charlotte, NC in the late 90s and had the opportunity to meet him after the show. I walked up to him, whipped out my wallet and attempted to hand him the largest bill I had - only a $10. He looked puzzled and asked "What's this for?" I said "Pete Townsend said anyone who ever played a loud, distorted guitar owes you money and this is all I got!" He laughed genuinely and told me to keep my money. We had a nice conversation. He was in his 70s at that point and he rocked the house.

The greatest music movie so far in the 21ST Century in my opinion is: "Rumble" featuring of course this song and Link Wray and the Native American influence on rock n roll. Available on the web. In the movie they say this was the only instrumental song ever banned from the radio.

This was the first song I ever learned to play on the first electric guitar (a Sears-Roebuck) I ever bought with my own money through my first amp (also a Sears-Roebuck). I went to my garage, cranked it to 10 and never looked back. I was 10 years old and by God I was a guitar hero.

Wray always fascinated me. Seemed to put together a handful of quintessential instrumentals in quick succession in the late 50s early 60s and never really made much after that.
