- Amtrak train yard tour in Los Angeles. Train spotting up close and personal. 100 year old train turn table in action & inside view of train locomotive.
I had the opportunity to visit a Los Angeles train yard. I got the chance to climb into several train locomotives & train cars. Was lucky to see the turn table in action. The turn table has been restored and is approximately 105 years old.

First time ever inside a working locomotive engine....Very cool. Also, check out the 100+ year old turn table in action!
Awesome stuff! Great to see up close.

Thanks... I got really lucky to be able to get up and personal with the trains...very awesome
Wow that's very interesting! Very informative and amazing to see what they do behind the scenes. I would like to visit that yard sometime myself.
Yeah, That was my first time inside a working locomotive....very cool.... Not like a museum thats for sure.
Loved your video, first time I got a chance to look inside.
Thanks...yeah, I had no idea what it was going to look like inside....
Wow. That is just incredible. Thanks for the awesome video!

You are so lucky to be there!!!!
Thanks.... truly a great opportunity. Now I wanna go for a ride-a-long.... now that would be nice.
@@DigginSoCalOutdoorAdventures The P42 was so cool. I have seen number 56 p42 at St louis.
Excellent content 👍
Thank you
Thats cool that they still use the turntables
I agree....It makes sense when they explain why they need to rotate the cars to even the wear on the train wheels. Thanks
@@DigginSoCalOutdoorAdventures I did not even think of it that way. That’s cool

Looks like those tracks around the turntable went too parts of a roundhouse
Not sure...some go to the train garages and others are just dead ends where the turn the cars around. One interesting fact is they turn all the cars around every so often to even out. the ware on the wheels....
Interesting video, but please ditch the music next time!
Thanks.... I agree. I noticed it was too loud and not needed.... You learn as you go I guess....
Nice video but please ditch the music. Ambient sounds would be much better and realistic.
Great vid, I also liked the guitar music. What songs were they called?
Thanks....I use a paid subscription for music...www.epidemicsound.com/track/Wg58OeqDO2/. I will check and see if I have the names of the artist in the file when I am at my office
That is so cool. We’re you actually moving that train?

then what is with the 3 Northern California Railcars?
@@Trainman2015 I am not sure. But this is a yard where they recondition old cars to a new condition before sending them back out. They could have been there for repairs or restoration?
@@Trainman2015 the cars are being used on the Pacific surfliner trains
@@Trainman2015 You probably know by now. When the Siemens cars come online in Northern California then all the second generation bilevel cars in use up there will be transferred to the Pacific Surfliners to help spread out the fleet and expand service throughout the state (Yes, they have “Surfliner” cars in California paint up there). During the pandemic, with fewer cars needed throughout the state, the state returned a number of cars being leased from Amtrak for the state services and started the process of redistributing the 2nd generation CA-owned bilevels in anticipation of the Siemens cars being in service by the end of the pandemic.
Unfortunately, the Siemens cars have had a major setback and now the state is short on equipment, which has halted the equipment redistribution and is slowing the post-pandemic service recovery (There is not enough equipment available to return to pre-pandemic service levels now that the 25-ish leased Amtrak cars were returned to Amtrak). The current situation will sustain for a while until the Siemens cars finally enter service, then you’ll see more of those northern CA bilevels come down south.
The sand is dropped on the rail in front of the wheels..
Very interesting the way it works....thanks
How do you get permission to get a tour of an Amtrak yard??
That is a great question...I had a good time!
Engineer Bill
Oh yeah....that would be cool....
MUSIC TOO LOUD !!!
I was told that before...nothing I can do about it now.....
Your music is way too loud.
Yeah… I did notice that. Sometimes it’s hard to tell in the editing process. Thanks for letting me know.
The turntable is not 100yrs old. Nothing 100yrs old remains. It is new. Totally rebuilt. Please stop the lying.
People who work on the rails, are telling the truth about the rails
It’s restored, not rebuilt. The operator shack, wood deck, motor, and bearings were replaced. The frame was sand blasted, restored, and repainted.
