    Let me know if this type of breakdown is helpful. What other areas of Comic Book Production would be good to dig deeper on?

      I am working on a comic, the characters will be returning to a same room/building. Should I draw maps of rooms for reference? How do you lay-out rooms for future reference?

    Amazing what seemingly simple gradients and textures added together take the colours and depth to a whole new level. Thanks for your insight.

    Bro are you outside of my window? I literally just thought I needed to study page composition. It's borderline supernatural.

    Thanks for the layer breakdown and the time saving tips, that was helpful! The editing phase and the finishing touches that are essential for the final look of a drawing or page are too often ignored in tutorials. There is a ton about "how to draw" but almost nothing about "how to get to the result that looks professional". Many of us can draw but that doesn't make us pros.

    thanks so much for this high effort video! I would also love to see some adive on the writing process, especially the *translation* from script to storyboard, since you do author + artist wich is rare

      Yeah good idea! I think this is an interesting topic as often being the writer/artist creates very different workflows that can skip the script stage entirely. I'll make a video on this sometime soon.

    Hi Codex.. really happy for your books,the effort it takes on the mind , I'm surprised your still sane,ha.. I'm working on a comic character ,made up my mind to write something everyday,need to get it out of my mind onto the page.. one of the hardest parts for me is( supporting cast) character origins..on word balloons very important their shape, conveys meaning/emotion, location on page can lead the eye , knowing where you put them can help not to cover important artwork..I need to read up more on creative, sci-fi writing..

    This reminds me of how the "jack of all trades" saying is often misquoted. The full quote is "a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” You get such an advantage in work flow being a writer that can draw, color, and fully render his story, as opposed to having to filter through several other artists to get potentially weaker results, imo.

    Thanks for sharing, it would be awesome to talk about how to decide between black fill areas or gray areas in manga, as a proper illustrator I can't really figure out why something's white or black when actually it's not in real life values

    • @TheDrawingCodex
      @TheDrawingCodex  Год назад +4

      Yeah that's a great one. I don't use a lot of black in my work but I have a good understanding of what is happening there. I'll try to make something which addresses that! It's mostly about design and the abstract nature of picture making. Spotting blacks for traditional western inkers has a lot to do with what looks good... leading the eye and making it interesting. More so than logic of 'should it be darker there'... And in a similar way Manga is often very graphic and abstract in the way it communicates. Often story or a million other things override the logic of what should be in the light and what should be in shadow. It's such a fine line between knowing where the shadow should go... and tweaking/expanding/omitting it to make things look better.

    That is very informative! I will try the writing/drawing on the same page to see what difference it makes. I might practice more things this way instead of doing some sort of writing and scripture first. I bet you have an outline first for the story?
    I will try something simple to see how far I can get with a comic page. For me it is the ultimate unit! If you can do a page from start to finish you are good to go and do as many as you want lol.

    Did you do all of this digitally? Including the thumbnails ?

    • @TheDrawingCodex
      @TheDrawingCodex  6 месяцев назад +1

      For this episode I think I did the thumbnails digitally. If I recall it was a bit quicker because I needed to have the text finalised really early for translation.. so I just did it all in Photoshop from the word go. I prefer to do the initial thumbnails in a sketch book normally though. I think I have done the planning for last 6 episodes traditionally.
