Sorry to say that, but I can hardly relate the winning piece to the picture this time. Tempo, mood, energy all seem very disconnected to the setting and visual components that are presented
I was reading through the comments and I have to say that I too (was duped by Ryan, uh no 😆) focused on showcasing the romance and the couples, blending them with the Cyberpunk theme, though it seems that wasn't the main focus desired. Yet, the artist who made the image has a vision of what he expects to hear, and if he thinks the winning entry is more in tune with that vision, I can't do much. Obsiously interpration is part of the challenge. And it's actually a valuable lesson, as this kind of situation is pretty common! And Ryan was also in the same impression... SO HE, TOO, WAS DECEIVED BY THE JURY-REVOLUTION! I WANT MY MONEY BACK, CHRISTOPHER! 🤑 Joke aside, I'm also under the impression that Ryan, despite organizing the contest, might not have been part of the judging panel (though I still need to confirm this). So again, the jury is to blame! And Ryan is only an accomplice to this masquerade! 😂 Nonetheless, participating in this contest has been a great learning experience for both me and, I know, a lot of you too! The production quality of the finalist and the winner was absolutely top-notch and truly inspiring. Which is amazing, because each time it pushes me to raise the level of my production! Ultimately, these contests are like group exercises where you can win prizes, and participation is free! So obviously no hard feelings, and lots of gratitude, as always! 😃 Congratulations to the winners and finalists! 🎉🥳🎉 See you in 3 months!

My favorite was bitcrushed. That harmonic progression after the stop is just immaculate. I might be wrong, but I think it goes something like Ab Cm Db Bb half diminished. The way the melody interracts with the harmony makes a little moment where the melody is on G on the Db major chord, so it makes it feel like a #11 chord for a small moment, and the half diminished gives it such an emotional quality to it as well. Tons of people in the comments are absolutely bashing on the winner and having negative thoughts about this whole competition, and I'd just say that there were like 7 or 8 of the 12 finalists that easily could have won on another day. It's all subjective because it's music, and the margins between each were just so small. Great job to the winner and everyone else too.
yes I thought the couple was the most important thing and the scene was mostly background, but everyone else seemed to feel it the other way. The piece I wrote was over-the-top romance.
@@composingcompetitions If the host of the competition can't even be sure of the criteria for a competition then I wonder what's the point of participating in future competitions? There's no value from this experience if success or failure is purely the whim of judges ignoring the prompt given to those participating. and even worse the person handed success in this case didn't even follow basic instructions in regards to the theme. At this point I consider the production time I spent on this, wasted.
Agree. In the end your music should and/or will just expose what your own connection is with the picture I think. The subjective auditive output related to a possible succesful objective impact is a impossible thing to get a grip on. I feel that's also the power and magic of music. And maybe it has something to do also with letting go of control ;-) p.s. Contradicted to the winners entry I went for a total romantic approach on this January competition and it didn't convince any of the judgement phases.
@@jeffhijlkema I took this prompt as a lesson in turning down work that’s not right for you. The last contests had almost entirely orchestral finalists, and some of the electronic composers felt left out, which is totally valid. I tried out a couple of orchestral theme ideas, and none of them fit because the prompt clearly was suggesting a more electronic sound. I thought about trying to teach myself synth composition, but there was just no way I could learn enough fast enough to write a decent entry. So I sat out, no big deal. Let the electronic composers have their fun and work on other projects until the next contest comes around. For what it’s worth, I interpreted the image as kind of bittersweet and anxious, like the lovers have to part because they are in danger. So my interpretation might have made a winning entry if I had the skills to write it lol.

Congratulations to the winners! Great feedback! Can’t wait for the next competition!
Congratulations to all participants !👍✌
My top three:
3. Léo Billon - Chrome Heartbeat
2. Kit Keenlyside - As the Rain Poured Our Love Burned
1. Michael Popescu - Love at First Scan
So you told everyone that the theme was romance, but the winning piece was anything but focused on romance. Fair enough...

Wow i loved Michael Popescu's work
Nah... It was "Michael Popescu - Love At First Scan" for me... Clear winner... Have no idea what happened there.
Man, lotta hate in these comments. Relax people! Music is subjective!

Music is subjective, but there is a clear distinction between tolerable/mediocre music and actual good music.
where is the new competition for april? :)
Love at first scan sounded like sailor moon. Not that it fits but it took inspiration from sailor moon romance themes
Ryan's piece sounds like a Disney piece like the, "Rescuers". Very nice, but not really synty-digital.
Ferenc Bátri's one is my favorite.
Love at First Scan was robbed! :( well done all!
None of the theme sounded romantic!! It all like fully focused on electronic Synth music not giving importance to theme ( photo ) eventually !!
ladsy choices lately, tad predictable.
