I'm going to confess that once, many years ago, I overtook someone who had pulled in for an emergency services vehicle behind us. I had my music on way too loud and hadn't heard or seen them. Fortunately I realised my mistake and was able to then pull in before they got to us, but I did feel like a wally. Not happened again since!
We ALL make mistakes (yes, that includes whoever reads this), I have probably made more than most, but that can be a positive thing when we admit to ourselves that we were in the wrong, and learn something useful from it.
As long as you didnt hold them up too much is the important part. My dad was an advanced driving instructor a long time ago, i was in his builders van with him and a fire engine was behind us and gaining. We were going down Camelon highstreet (which is a main road through as its part of Falkirk district) and all the other vehicles ahead parked in the parking spaces. The only option we had was to keep going and at the end was a roundabout, so my dad indicated right, went round the roundabout and stopped just before where we entered from and checked his mirrors and waved the fire engines through. It was all he could do to get out the way with a long wheelbase van. Its hard enough if people notice an emergency vehicle and get themselves out the way, but its better if you can miss a space for someone behind to use and use the next one. If you still drive with loud music on, train yourself to be more disciplined with visual checks. Its what i do if got loud music on, make sure i notice whats going on around as not got hearing to help.
I've done EXACTLY the same in virtually stand still traffic .... Ive made many mistakes. I'm grateful for finding this channel. I know I can be a pillock and go too fast. But feel and hope watching this channel will help make me a calmer safer driver
I agree with you. I've reconsidered my approach to driving after watching a lot of Ashleys videos, and I think I've become a more considerate driver as a result. How much do I owe you, Ashley?😆😆
It's actually a really good channel for drivers outside the UK as well if you think about the attitude towards driving Ashley has. Top-notch! I definitely have this channel to thank for making me a much more calm and considerate driver.
Clip 4 - if you don’t want the lorry out in front of you, Either overtake and get clear. That’s the right way to do it, or at the very least get alongside the cab and put the block on. The latter being ignorant and dangerous. However don’t hang around and dither like he did and then complain
Did you also spot that the space behind them was free? They could have reversed right into that then had much more space to drive out rather than reverse. It always amazes me to see people struggle to park forwards into spaces (apart from where they will fill up their boot with shopping) then struggle to reverse out. The position of mirrors make it much easy to reverse in and the position of the steered wheels make it much easier to reverse in & drive out.
@@TheRip72 I didn't notice the free space. and you're right. the steering geometry makes it easier to get square in the space and get out if you reverse in. a lot of the time, the behavior of the other people in the car park makes it inconvenient to reverse at any time.
Re the clip at 2:04, I have no idea why anyone would ever sit alongside a larger vehicle like that. You either get in front, or hang back to ensure they have enough room to move. Forget the parked cars coming up (which the car must have seen and known the lorry needed room for): what's going to happen if someone suddenly steps out and the lorry swerves to avoid? Spend as little time alongside a moving large vehicle as you can.
I agree but only up to the truck pulling out, he should've just eased off and not let it get to where he has no room left and has to force the pull out, if he hit that car he would be to blame even though the car driver was a dick.
spend as little time alongside ANY vehicle as you reasonably can. if people are properly spaced, there is more empty space than vehicle in any given lane, so there's no excuse for cruising alongside another vehicle.
@@PedroConejo1939 to us, that's the outside. we consider the median (central reservation) the middle, so anything towards the middle is inside and anything away from the middle is outside.
@@kenbrown2808 I know, but I was writing from a UK perspective. It kind of works if you remember that the inside is the left in both countries. Strangely, I think the terms swap on roundabouts here, but I'm not sure if that's officially or not. Usually when I'm writing for an American audience, I use left and right.
The driver of the blue Renault @2:16 ought to have been a bit more accommodating and was even giving a mixed message by partly falling back. Those sorts of situations are common on urban roads in the UK and traffic flow is aided by not forcing vehicles in the left lane to a stop by stubbornly holding position. In this case it just seems to have been inept driving as I don't think the driver was trying to get in front of the lorry; it just looks as if they misjudged the situation.
When I'm cycling on single track roads and approaching a left-hand bend I do like to move over to the right so I can see around the bend earlier and if a a vehicle is approaching the driver sees me, but on a right hand bend I try to stick to the left as best as I can
Which is the correct way; giving yourself 'a view' of the corner.....Some cyclists need to watch motorcycle advanced videos, in regards to positioning; too many think they're on a closed road....But remember, safety over positioning.
@@Andy_ATB Problem is that you get honked at and close passed on bends by motons so many feel intimdated into not moving out to give themselves a better view.
The clip at 4:30: If you can't see part of the road, always assume there is someone there. When you can confirm with your eyes that that isn't the case, you're in the clear. This mantra also works wonders when driving country lanes where sight lines are poor.
Clip 11: I've learned from watching enough dash cam footage that any time I'm exiting a roundabout and there is a car on my left, to be very wary in case that car continues around the roundabout (regardless of signalling or not). As Ashley has often stated, try to drive in a "staggered" formation and not alongside another vehicle. Of course, that simply isn't always possible, in which case, adjust speed and gear appropriately in case "things go pear shaped" as Ashley himself would put it! Similarly also, if you are in the correct lane to continue going round a roundabout, be prepared for someone in the lane to your right to exit it.
@TheWoodIsPoo You are not being harsh at all and I totally understand what you are saying. After now rewatching Clip 11, something comes to mind regarding the cam car's lane decision: The cam car might not have been able to get into Lane 1 even if it wanted to, due to the very fact of the white Mercedes catching it up, thereby cutting off that option. Even after the cam car was cut up by the white Mercedes at around 4:57, the black Audi SUV came by in Lane 1 at considerably higher speed at around 5:02, again also cutting off the option of the cam car moving to Lane 1 after the first incident. Of course, none the above answers whether or not the cam car would have used Lane 1 of the slip road anyway, in the absence of other vehicles in Lane 1. But I get what you are saying as a general case and I too, often see "slower" vehicles using Lane 2 of a sliproad to join a motorway when Lane 1 slip road is empty. Another variation of this is when a driver DOES use Lane 1 sliproad but for whatever reason (and despite huge signs) doesn't realise Lane 1 sliproad is a lane addition to the main carriageway and ends up changing straight into Lane 2 when Lane 1 is clear. I often find it advantageous to use Lane 1 of a sliproad rather than Lane 2, as it is often a lane "addition" to the main carriageway and avoids direct conflict with the traffic on the main carriageway, whereas Lane 2 slip road involves an actual merge with main carriageway traffic. (Though taking care to refrain from inappopriate undertaking thereafter - for example HGV's on main carriageway now wanting to move into the new Lane 1). Also, when the main carriageway is choka-block with traffic, often Lane 1 sliproad will offer a smoother transition into the traffic. Of course, every situation is different and one really has to read the road and the signs in advance to make the best slip road lane decision and not base it exclusively on what "often" works best. Naturally, such lane decisions need to be made before the two slip road lanes are seperated with chevrons bounded by double solid white lines. I have seen drivers illegally crossing over such markings when they discover they haven't selected the lane that offers the best progress. I never do that and will just accept if I have not chosen the "lane of least resistance" and carry on until I merge onto the main carriageway, One thing I find really useful at motorway slip roads are those large blue signs showing the lane configurations coming up. They are so large, I am sure they can be read from outer space! Those signs are useful both when on the sliproad as well as when on the main carriageway. Even on stretches of motorway one is familiar with, they can be a good reminder of lane configurations, of which there are many different setups. Long post I know and I hope after all that I have answered your question!
What a collection of seriously troublesome clips. There's a couple that should have definitely gone plodwards - the Beemer jumping the red light because the person in front let someone out, the pavement wallah passing the horse, and that last one with the bus and the bike. Every one of those needed prosecuting. Clips 5 and 8 - perfectly illustrate what I have happen to me regularly with emergency vehicles on the nearby main road, except here, there's rarely a pull-in so most drivers pull as far left as we can (the road here is mostly wide enough to allow that and leave room for the ESV to pass) and still people barrel past traffic that for them, has apparently stopped for no good reason. The clearly give no thought as to what is actually going on, let alone try to scan ahead and see what's cracking off.
Seriously agree, the BMW driver needs at least a few points for that, both for using their car as a potential weapon threatening the cammer, then jumping the red. Reckless and dangerous driving. And the bus driver is meant to be a professional driver...
A personal favourite of mine is when we all pull in (like heroes) and then when the ambulance has passed, the Audi driver 12 back puts the foot down in pursuit to skip everyone, often jumping a light too. If you didn’t laugh….
The first clip (prior to the intro) with the cyclists is a good illustration of: 1. Always drive at a speed whereby you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear. Maybe even slower on a narrow country road 2. Don't be pressured to drive faster by someone close behind you (not saying that was the case here, just a general comment in such a situation) 3. Consider horn use on the approach to blind bends (though yes I know, risk of frightening as yet unseen horses)
on a country road those cyclists could have run into a tractor with a front mounted flail or front end loader with a one ton bail on the front . it could even be stationary
@@PedroConejo1939 Wales in the back roads is the worse of all I find. You can go all day without encountering anyone. Then suddenly a farmer in a 4x4 comes round the bend at speed. Can usually hear the tractors and they move slower. Generally, I feel pretty safe there as long as watch speed according to how far I can see ahead. . Especially on the many descents there! Only takes a second lifting off the brake and can be going into a blind corner a little too fast! You need some experience and hyper-alertness on those roads for sure.
@@andrewnorris5415 I've lived in Pembs, so I know about Wales and those enticing hedges that are actually stone walls with sod laid on top. There's also the issue of mud running down the road, I've seen a number of drivers ditched because of it.

I think Cyprus has the worst driving in Europe. Red traffic lights mean stop in the middle the junction if at all. Its scary diving there. however its ten times more scary in a taxi.
Walking through Larnaca one day I actually saw a guy driving with a mobile phone jammed under his ear a cigarette in his mouth and looking down a long lens camera resting on the dash board.

That poor lady, I did start waving my hands at her trying to stop her going more forward but she didn’t see, her observations were not great. Also I wanted to address this, I’ve been reading through the comments and seen some regarding my show plate in the window just wanted to say that I do have a front and rear plate on that is just a 2nd show plate non-legal on my dash just for looks really, “not a Plate that has fell off my front bumper”.
Clip 9: The kids are running across without looking but why keep going when you know there's a hazard in the road. If they'd have hit them I'm pretty sure the police would be asking why they didn't hit the brake rather than the horn
It's in Crookes Sheffield and very well sighted so she could have seen the situation unfolding, what's more I thought the amendments to the code give pedestrians more priority. Terrible and impatient driving.
To be fair she does brake in time (just) and the horn/swearing is probably a fear response. I’m not sure the new Highway Code specifically covers kids running into traffic. I think she sees the first one go and the reaction from the rest of the group and then didn’t expect the 2nd one. I might’ve slowed earlier, but then again I wasn’t there and the psychology of a fear response is different for everyone (fight, flight, friend and freeze are the basic 4 but there are variations even in these). Although fear is a superpower (10 points if you get the reference) in some, it can actually dull reaction times in others. Just look before you run in front of the fast moving metal bricks that’ll kill you…..
That flatbed was slightly less at fault in my mind at 2:00 because a) it was further ahead and b) if the SUV did not want to give way and yet failed to push forward before the merge despite their being plenty of room, he should of either done that or backed off not played silly games especially with such a large vehicle.
The car could have eased off to let the truck out without hindering the traffic flow but if the wagon was forced to stop, everyone has a slightly awkward time of it. No way would I spend that long alongside an HGV. Very poor driving from the car but the truck shouldn't really have just pulled over even if the car driver was being a knob.
@@pelicanofpunishment6 the car is not in the trucks blind spot..the mirror blind spot is on the nearside. Car is on the same side as the driver. I think the car driver is simply oblivious and not paying attention. He cannot see there is an obstruction in the left lane so does not ease back to allow the truck to change lanes with more room to spare. On saying that had there been a collision the truck would have been at fault for an unsafe lane change.
Is a clear rule about lane changing. There is not a "merge in" situation. LGV changing lane, not merging. If accident happens - will be fault of a lorry driver. Only fault for car driver - he/she encourage lorry to change lane - giving a more space (slowing down) so lorry driver may be think: this car see me and make space for me. And mirrors cannot tell full story what is behind.
The last time i asked someone a question like "do you know what lane you're supposed to be driving in?" i got told to be quiet or get out and walk if i don't like their driving 😂😂
@@UnbeltedSundew +1, I've been in a few ubers that I would have gotten out of during the middle of the day, speeding, tailgating, etc. But getting out and walking 2 miles at 2am wasn't a feasible option.
5:30 let's face it, the main reason anyone buys one of those machines is to use its bulk and power to F about on the roads. The one unfortunate side effect of electric vehicles is to make it possible to get a lot more power for 0-30 dashes like that.
I'm 50 and got involved in driving via my father and grandfather in the mid 70s. Both had boatyards on the Norfolk Broads, and both had various different road vehicles. My grandfather used to sit me on his knees and let me steer his 1960s Mini pickup on the backroads when I was 3 or 4 years old, plus, he also let me steer boats every Saturday on the river as an example of how to drive the boat to the hirers. At the time, father used to transport boats using a Land Rover and trailer, and when the need to transport bigger boats arose in 77, bought a Bedford TK tractor unit and 40ft trailer to accommodate. I was 5 at the time, and, from then until 2018, driving was my main interest and passion, from proper Minis to 44t artics (which I drove for over 25 years.). I did pretty well at school and college, but was hell bent on driving a big lorry. So I did, and loved it for many years, despite all the usual adverse traffic conditions, long hours, poor facilities, poor wages, etc, blah yada, stuff that still causes issues....... Drivers and incidents like those shown in this video were probably the most commonplace and unchanging sight I witnessed daily, sometimes hourly, throughout, and a contributing factor in my decision to quit mile munching for a living. However, don't think I'm getting all virtuous here! I passed my car test in 89 and have probably driven at least 2 or 3 million miles in the interim. Law of averages dictate that during all that time spent on the road, SOMETHING had to happen, and I experienced my quota of mishaps, probably not 50/50 my fault/their fault, but certainly 40/60 or 30/70. I ain't perfect either. I'd like to say thanks to Ashley for presenting it how it is: Objectively, realistically, and educationally. In 98% of the dashcam videos I've seen, the cammer seems to be equally at fault as the person they're filming, be it via excessive speed/insufficient gap/braking distance, lane discipline (probably the most common faux pas), aggression, impatience, misguided self righteousness, unawareness (especially regarding size of vehicle and required space to operate said vehicle, including plenty of hgv drivers whom I've witnessed causing, then subsequently denying, ££££s of damage), you get the gist...... What is it about getting behind a steering wheel that causes even the otherwise most intelligent beings (brain scientists, rocket surgeons etc) to morph into utter morons?! Poignant example, as it seems that the bigger the budget and the bigger/more expensive/exclusive the car, the bigger and more self righteous/condescending the owners/drivers seem to become. @@mcilgrew that would be he point in time I bypass the company and go to the police. Why get him a slap on the wrist when he deserves to be in cuffs for such a stunt? Plus, if he ends up in cuffs, they have almost no choice but to fire him at that point.
Clip 14 . People with such poor manoeuvring skill really ought not to be driving . Good drivers reverse into spaces ; poor ones reverse into passing cars , pedestrians, shopping trolleys … because they park the wrong way round , which is actually harder to do anyway .
Just to play a little devils advocate here, some of us cannot reverse into spaces as we need wheelchair access from the boot, many of these store carparks thoughtfully place a bollard in the centre of the boot, even in disabled bays.. They think, "Logic? What is logic?"
@@gareth14111984 or need to load your purchases into the boot. when I was young, about three quarters of the car parks in my area had the parking bays at a 45 degree angle, which made it easy for our land yachts to pull in and back out of the bays. then some bean counter figured out they could squeeze in one more bay per dozen if they set all the bays at 90 degrees. amusingly, it is the smaller cars that seem to have the most trouble getting lined up with the bay.
Not always great to reverse into a space. My EV has its charging port on the nose. If I'm charging I have to drive in as rapid chargers tend to have short cables, or if I'm destination charging it avaoids a cable running the length of the car. Not ideal, but it is what it is.

Obviously not good for the kids to run into the road, but considering there were more standing there, the driver should have slowed instead of sounding the horn first
8:30 That almost looks intentional, assuming there's no vehicles beside the overtaking bus (Which seems to be the case from the footage) there's no reason for the overtaking bus to swing in and then out again. Absolutely piss poor driving, really held my breath during that clip. Hope the bus company has been sent this footage.
Nah they were pulling into the stop to see if anyone was going to signal that they wanted to hop on. It’s quite a common thing for them to do. Which worryingly just suggests they hadn’t actually seen the bike or completely forgot the size of the bus.
It's always fun at the start of the clip to try and predict where the problem is going to come from. Like at 5:09 whoever would have guessed it was going to be the BMW SUV with the private plate?
2:00 the blue Renault is definitely more at fault in my opinion. They were hanging about in a lorrys blind spot, which is not only dangerous because the lorry driver can't see them, but also because they couldn't see the indicators and the cars parked on the left, so they'd have no idea what the lorry is going to do. They didn't brake until they saw the lorry encroaching into their lane. It should be common sense to give a lorry a wide berth unless you're overtaking.
The driver of the Renault SUV is an idiot. He should have simply eased off and let the the lorry out. I'm old, passed my test back in 1964 so would probably have done what is now considered unacceptable and given the driver a flash to verify I was letting him out. Whatever, if a lorry and a car have a coming together it's usually the car that comes off worse.
If there was a collision, the lorry would have been at fault. Yes the blue car driver was a bad driver, but the lorry still should have stopped and dropped in behind.

Clip 5 from Dashcam Hull: I've had similar happen many times. It is surprising how many drivers don't spot an emergency vehicle in their mirrors and then wonder why I'm pulling over, sometimes getting rather hot under the collar about it. And in some cases, even after the penny has dropped and the EV goes past, the driver behind then tailgates me as we set off again. Not sure if it's to try and hide their own "oversight" or what. Love Dashcam Hull's turn of phrase and their accent btw!

Had a young bloke in a trade van tailgating me the other morning on my commute to work on a 60mph single-lane country road. I was doing 60mph. He was behind me for about two miles. This genius finally made his move and overtook me - on a double-blind bend. Luckily for him, no tractor (they are common on that road) was coming the other way to send him to an early grave.
8:13 That one pissed me right off. Doing something as stupid as that could kill a rider if the horse decides to strafe sideways and jump over a bonnet. Someone I know had an almost identical situation, nervous horse (they have to learn by doing), and this person mounts a curb/gravel driveway, the sound of the crunching gravel obviously spooking the horse. Passing people on bikes too close is bad enough, but with horses it is unforgivable since horses have their own instincts and a rider is never in full control like with a bike. 5:03 I thought this would be a case of the car not looking before joining the queue, thus resulting in a near-miss from a car that was overtaking or just oncoming. Unbelievable.
2:47 I find this a lot with drivers who think the world ends at the front of their bonnets. They forget there's other things going on around them, and some have absolutely no spatial awareness whatsoever. 3:34 Think the motorcyclist would get away with the speeding ticket as he won't have a reg plate on the front. Only one camera is in use at any one time in one of those vans.
I've seen this (new?) type vans with 2 cameras: Speed one at back, and second at front (through front window) propably for vehicles without numberplate at front. But i'm not 100% sure for what reason 2nd camera is...
We can all agree the kids were taking stupid risks, but at the same time the fact she beeped and didn't begin to slow down is also an issue. If one has ran across the road, assume they all will. Hell, do everyone a favour and make it marginally safer for them by blocking the lane. Yes the kids should take more care, but you were a teenager once too, you know that you used to take unnecessary risks, so assume the rest of the group will as well
I had a lovely young gentleman gesticulating at me in his van whilst tailgating me recently because I slowed down to a crawl then he saw the horse rider, the sheepish look on his face was priceless.
Highway Code Rule 213 states: "On narrow sections of road, on quiet roads or streets, at road junctions and in slower moving traffic, cyclists may sometimes ride in the centre of the lane, rather than towards the side of the road." Your viewer perhaps knew this Rule 213 by slowing down and, observing the first person riding a cycle thinking others might follow. That was a narrow country road anything could be around that corner, broken down car, children walking home, horse riders, tractor, anything......., so go slow and prepare to stop on such roads. You can see the loose debris on the inside of that corner with many pot holes just before the blind turn which would have thrown them off which the riders are clearly avoiding and slowing right down, I know it has happened to me. The driver was spot on driving carefully and cared for other road users.
anyone riding or driving on a single track road must always be expecting someone to be coming the other direction at speed, and position themselves accordingly. this applies to both the camera car, which did well, and the cyclists, who did somewhat less well.
@@peterdixon6807 it was me driving, I’m a driving instructor and was taking my pupil on a first lesson to a practice area. We were just discussing how she uses this road on her bike and doesn’t like it as it’s narrow and the cars drive to fast. Her response was wow that was close why would you cycle on the wrong side of the road round a corner like that. The video doesn’t show just how fast they were going too, absolutely crazy behaviour and unfortunately people like this give cyclists a bad reputation

The middle lane/lane 3 of 4 hog isn't exclusive to P plates. It's universal and it annoys the hell out of me. The worst examples by far is when I move to let emerging traffic on a slip road join the motorway and they pull straight over to lane 3 - why? And why do the police never seem to enforce the rules? 😡😡😡
This is a daily occurrance. There are so many people in the middle lanes of motorways doing under the speed limits, and nobody seems to want to overtake the slower moving vehicles. There are times where I find myself undertaking them, especially if I am going to be coming off at a junction a bit further up.
Actually against the law in Scotland now (enforced about as well as any other non speed camera-able traffic laws….) though given everyone seems to drive a tank these days, proper parking on both sides would rarely leave enough space for even a cyclist.
@@mjudec Isn’t that problem regulated by parking allowed on only one side? That is the case for the street outside my home. Also taking away free parking some years ago got rid of many or most of the street parked cars here. I think many parked here to then take the bus or subway downtown.
@@th5841 You couldn't possibly make people pay to park in their own street in suburbs, there would be protests worse than the poll tax. Parking on one side maybe could work, but I'm not sure it's practical or within the budgets of local councils. It's really weird, because it would be councils who ticketed any pavement parkers and got the fine money.... Which usually would mean they go at it with gauleiter like glee.
@@mjudec Here it was possible. Now there are hardly any street parking in my neighbourhood. The residents have their own driveways or garages. When it was free, most cars were not locals. They parked here to take the bus or subway to their destination downtown, where there were no free parking. Parking is free from 8 to 8 in the nights and on Sundays and «red» days. The locals can buy a yearly parking ticket for around 500 Euro. I must add that public transit is very good here, so most people don’t need to drive in most cases.

Clip 1 with the cyclists was the low-res version (you can tell by the typeface on the writing) - the other copy will have a better image quality. I found this by accident, because i was really disappointed with the quality of my videos, and couldn’t make out number plates; turns out I was watching the wrong copy! I’ve seen a few Nextbase videos recently that suggest other people also are not aware of this.
Finally had that moment where I recognised part of a road as being quite local to me. clip around 8:00 had me pointing at the screen! drivers can be awful round this area, especially when it backs up.
I've been in a situation like that with a bus, I was coming down Rice Lane by the Sainsburys from the roundabout and was going straight, bot going left towards the clock tower, so I stayed in the lane. Next minute this bus just comes right next to me, probably about 2 inches away from me and gets stuck at the lights as I overtook him. Can't say he missed me, I have a bright orange bag.
With clip 15, when there is a long line of traffic, making turning right near impossible, turn left and turn around at the end roundabout or junction. It's just safer and keeps the traffic flowing.
2:04 I would put the main blame on the truck driver, yes the car driver was ignorant/selfish/self entitled for not getting in front or behind to help the truck, but the truck pulling out anyway was the dangerous move, should've slowed a lot earlier in the hope another would let him out, not wait until there is no room left and force it.
Whenever there's a clip like this the majority of commenters would blame the car. Yet if it was 2 cars and the one on inside was to do what the truck did everybody would say it was to the inside car at fault.
7:31 a rarity for dashcammers (although as expected from somebody who watches your channel) brake and THEN on the horn. Faith in humanity is restored just a smidge 😩
4:30 Ashley what’s your opinion on the policy some councils are pursuing of deliberately reducing lines of sight at roundabouts? I know there’s some evidence that having good lines of sight gives motorists the confidence to drive faster and not do deliberate checks, and this actually makes serious accidents more likely. However I’m not convinced and it’s certainly counterintuitive. What’s your view? All other comments welcome too.
I am a professional road safety engineer. Roundabouts are safest when the lines of sight are equal on all approaches and appropriate for the circulating speed of the roundabout. As you alluded to, longer sight lines encourage drivers to drive faster. Additionally, uneven sight lines that encourage different speeds on each approach make it really hard for drivers to judge whether it is safe to enter the roundabout. Shorter sight lines can slightly increase total crashes, however, they drastically reduce injury crashes and almost eliminate fatal crashes. Historically, councils have tried to get as much sight distance as possible at roundabouts and so, in many cases, they will need to correct this by reducing the line of sight on some approaches.
@@georgelane6350 I'm not a road safety engineer, but I am a road user. If I had enough money to pay the fine for cutting down the stupid fences put up at roundabouts for "safety", I'd have cut them down yesterday. Proper education saves more money than clumsy solutions such as those. Bloody stupid. Next you'll want to give car drivers blindfolds because seeing less = safer.
@@georgelane6350 thanks, this is refreshing to hear a professional view - it makes complete sense actually - I do like to have a long sight line, I like to approach at a speed which enables me to continue on to the roundabout but also stop if needed. On the other hand you get those who go at full pelt regardless and then the opposite extreme with drivers who can only really master what's in front of them so they will come to a full stop before even looking up to see if it's clear! There is a fine balance of unnecessary stop-start driving and being dangerous by going in too fast. Along with intentional fences I wonder if councils realise that bushes and other vegetation growing across islands and the like can add to the problem!
@@Umski maintainence is a massive issue in the UK. If you have vegetation right up against the roundabout, then that obviously won't be safe. A lot of councils just don't allow enough budget for maintainence because the councilors want to cut ribbons on new roads instead
Clip 1 is a major bug of mine, I see cyclists on the wrong side of blind bends too often. 2:16 looks like a classic case of blindspot hogging. Although I didn't see an indication from the lorry I did see brake lights from the Renault. Not sure if they were both slowing for each other but either way, Renault should have passed rather than bumble along in the right hand lane
at the 4:58 section. The white looks like they were on course for a spin out. you can just catch them start to spin at the very last moments. ABS is a fantastic tool, but it has its limits. and at 7:00 I bet they where consentrating to much to what was going on behind them than in front. Fantastic Commentery as usual Ash! I Love your videos and they have helpped me improve my awareness and self control in and out of the drivers seat. better to put your hands up and addmit you made a mistake and to learn from it than it is to get angry and blame others.
4:18 is a point in Sheffield I drive through often and I can attest for how bad the pedestrians there are at times. Even with all the crossings they’ll just step out without checking properly/at all
Two tips I got when learning to drive. 1. Whatever you think the last thing on earth the person in front is going to do, they're going to do it, in front of you, right now! 2. It's a two ton killing machine fully loaded and ready to go. Both have made me very alert and very aware of consequences. Drive safe and courteously people. It maybe your piece of road or your right of way, but is worth the time when it invariably goes wrong? Thanks for your content, it's always a plus to see care in your work ;)
Clip 4: Re "I love having a ringside seat in a stubborness competition". Yes, I can relate to that too. About equally as good is seeing a tailgater themselves getting tailgated moments after passing me. Or someone who was in such a hurry to pass me then getting stuck in traffic further up the road. Especially more satisfying if I'm turning off the road and not even part of the traffic jam!
02:17 - I'd say that the lorry driver is more at fault because he swerved into the blue car's lane and cut the blue car up and the blue car had to take evasive action
Question: Is that police speed camera van parked properly in a 3.33 min of the video and if we can use middle of the road to pass them legally? Do not remember what is the name of road floor sigh in the middle of the road.
I swear 99% of people use the horn wrong on a day to day basis. If someone pulls out infront of me in any way, i react to make sure i dont crash. Not react by jumping on the horn.
My logic for disagreeing with you at 5:07 is as follows: There's a queue of traffic. Cars at the front of the queue owe it to the cars behind them to get through the lights promptly, or you just hold up a lot of people. This doesn't affect the car in the side road much. They should get let out by someone approaching the junction as the lights go back to red. Let's say I'm the 5th car in the queue. I should get through on that green, and not be prevented from doing so by letting that car out. On the other hand, if I'm (say) 12th in the queue, the lights will be changing again as I get to the point that the cammer is in, so I let that car out. Everyone is better off with this approach. Obvs none of this excuses what the Beamer did.
A question for Ashley. At 4:38 the roundabout clip. Why is the vegetation allowed to grow around roundabouts? It just blocks people's view (in the case the red car). Shouldn't Council cut it back? Or is it allowed to grow, in the hope that people will stop before entering the roundabout?
1:37 ayyyy thats my clip i submitted 2~3 months back. Didnt realise editing took this long. That section is where i see a lot of people using the oncoming lane to turn right at the junction as well since this is a known traffic jam spot.
For a few of these clips I think Ashley is kind on the submitters. Clip 9 - Teenagers running into the road in front of you? Start slowing down as soon as you see it, “cover that footbrake”, my instructor used to say and I still say it to myself. Then the emergency stop wouldn’t have been as harsh or perhaps necessary because the vehicle would have been slower already. Clip 20 - The warning signs are there from the beginning, the road the SUV is turning into doesn’t go anywhere, as soon as it swings back towards parallel with the road that needs an easing off and anticipation that it will just pull back out. Then it wouldn’t have been as near a near miss as it was.
Ref HGV and SUV . HGV can see parked cars so should either indicate intention to move out early or back off and allow SUV to pass . SUV should never sit in the indecision spot .( the larger vehicle needs more space and time to react so don't put the HGV driver into " what are you doing ?" Mode ) Either stay back or pass . As a HGV driver I expect the SUV to have the " must get past the truck" mentality so in this case would have backed off a touch then indicated and moved out behind them
Clip 1 Not a word mentioned of the cammer tailgating at around .3 to .4 of a second from the vehicle in front. The cammer had plenty of time to ease off.
One thing that I notice in these clips and that kinda baffles me is that after someone makes a mistake cam car (or sometimes others) always sit on their horn. I never ever use my horn AFTER someone did something stupid. What is the point? They already did the stupid and blaring my horn won't change that. But if I notice that someone is about to do something unwise I will let them know they should think again.
Sometimes it's to alert the person to the fact 'you're' there, lots of people will do something and afterwards STILL have no idea there's another vehicle.
@@owieprone I can understand that. But I have witnessed a lot of situations where people realize they are doing something wrong in the middle of doing and when someone aggressively honks at them they panick and get it even more wtong

4:48 I know that junction well. I’m fairness you’ve always got to be ready for people to jump out of the left lane at the last minute there. People are desperate not to go the wrong way there as they’d then have to go several miles down the motorway to the next junction before turning round. Hence they’re more willing to risk a crash. That’s no excuse for it of course, but we’ve all just got to be ready for them.
Clip member 2 on the M62, I can almost guarantee they were heading to Liverpool and know that there is a small section where it crosses the m6 that you have to get into lane 3 to go straight on
Clip 4 ... I would have thought the lorry was more at fault as the blockage of the parked car was in his lane and the outside lane was not clear for him to move into.
Clip 11 is the top of the M32 near Bristol, the car that cut across probably joined from the A4174 at J1 and was happily undertaking traffic while ignoring the clear signs saying lane 1 is M4 west only. Too common at that junction.
The undertaking car is definitely in the wrong but why oh why was the cammer in the lane they chose to turn left? I know that it is probably ok to turn left from that lane but surely only if overtaking another vehicle which they weren't. That just strikes me as being as bad as a lane hogger on a multilane road.
I love the counter intuitiveness of the camera van making the roads safer by partially blocking a live lane. If the van has a forward facing camera to get the plate of the bike then s/he could be caught but if not, the rider will have got away with that
Camera vans have forward facing cameras as well. It is enough for them to catch the front of a speeding bike and identify it as the same one that is (no longer speeding) departing visible in the front camera. There was only one exit from the road (other than driveways) between the biker seeing the van and the van though, so they didn't have many ways out of that situation where the plate wouldn't be seen.
By the look of the driver they got their licence decades ago. If it was anything like my dad's first wife, there was no test. They arrived at the police station to get her licence. Police officer asked my dad "Can she drive, Doc?" Dad being the local physician. He said yes. "Righto, come back in an hour, it'll be ready".
CLIP4 50/50 - lorry driver for lack of forward planning and awareness. Car driver for driving in wrong lane and not expecting the unexpected by effectively driving blind.
People acknowledging and apologising for their mistakes, (which even the best drivers make), helps diffuse tensions, eases flow and ultimately makes driving around more pleasant. I think your "hands up if you need lesson" quip discourages behaviour that ought to be encouraged.
Probably seeing the first rider's line and assuming that meant the road was clear. The first rider should have called out the oncoming vehicle to alert those behind.
Taking a line that is less risk of slipping. Bit of a case of following the wheel in front too - just like drivers locking on that Ashley talks about. Of course what they should do is slow down so they can comfortably make the corner on the correct side of the road. Muppets was an accurate description.
Something that amazes me is when I pull in to the left possibly into a lay by to allow an emergency vehicle to pass, the traffic behind me follows and does the same. Then when the emergency vehicle passes me the vehicle behind me pulls out followed by all the other vehicles and overtake me as I am pulling out. Seems as though because I am the first to pull in and the last vehicle that the emergency vehicle clears that I end up loosing three or four positions on the road! Never worked that one out!
I'm not sure how it is in the UK but here in the US peds have right of way in crosswalks, so the driver at 4:14 should have yielded regardless of the ped looking or not
The incident at 4:15 - yeah, the pedestrians are totally ignorant there, but honestly as a driver when you see a group like this already spread across the road - just slow down and let them all pass unless there's a serious danger in doing that. Whenever I see a group like this I expect this sort of thing to happen - it's just a bit of a herd instinct that kicks in, and I don't mean anything mean by that.
As a pedestrian and cyclist, I must use the status I have in the highway code to show understanding of other road users and be aware that car and lorry drivers may not be able to take preventative action as quick as I can.
2:10 imho, both were at fault, but the blue car was in a position to solve the problem without any issue. Ease on the accelerator and let that lorry pass. Not worth ruining everyone's day with unnecessary damage, injury or worse, even if someone else creates that situation.
I'm going to confess that once, many years ago, I overtook someone who had pulled in for an emergency services vehicle behind us. I had my music on way too loud and hadn't heard or seen them. Fortunately I realised my mistake and was able to then pull in before they got to us, but I did feel like a wally. Not happened again since!
We ALL make mistakes (yes, that includes whoever reads this), I have probably made more than most, but that can be a positive thing when we admit to ourselves that we were in the wrong, and learn something useful from it.
As long as you didnt hold them up too much is the important part.
My dad was an advanced driving instructor a long time ago, i was in his builders van with him and a fire engine was behind us and gaining. We were going down Camelon highstreet (which is a main road through as its part of Falkirk district) and all the other vehicles ahead parked in the parking spaces. The only option we had was to keep going and at the end was a roundabout, so my dad indicated right, went round the roundabout and stopped just before where we entered from and checked his mirrors and waved the fire engines through.
It was all he could do to get out the way with a long wheelbase van.
Its hard enough if people notice an emergency vehicle and get themselves out the way, but its better if you can miss a space for someone behind to use and use the next one.
If you still drive with loud music on, train yourself to be more disciplined with visual checks. Its what i do if got loud music on, make sure i notice whats going on around as not got hearing to help.
I've done EXACTLY the same in virtually stand still traffic .... Ive made many mistakes. I'm grateful for finding this channel. I know I can be a pillock and go too fast. But feel and hope watching this channel will help make me a calmer safer driver

Clip 4 - if you don’t want the lorry out in front of you, Either overtake and get clear. That’s the right way to do it, or at the very least get alongside the cab and put the block on. The latter being ignorant and dangerous. However don’t hang around and dither like he did and then complain
regarding the usual parking spot in the car park: it always amazes me how a person can have so much trouble maneuvering such a small car.
Did you also spot that the space behind them was free? They could have reversed right into that then had much more space to drive out rather than reverse.
It always amazes me to see people struggle to park forwards into spaces (apart from where they will fill up their boot with shopping) then struggle to reverse out. The position of mirrors make it much easy to reverse in and the position of the steered wheels make it much easier to reverse in & drive out.
@@TheRip72 I didn't notice the free space. and you're right. the steering geometry makes it easier to get square in the space and get out if you reverse in. a lot of the time, the behavior of the other people in the car park makes it inconvenient to reverse at any time.

Re the clip at 2:04, I have no idea why anyone would ever sit alongside a larger vehicle like that. You either get in front, or hang back to ensure they have enough room to move.
Forget the parked cars coming up (which the car must have seen and known the lorry needed room for): what's going to happen if someone suddenly steps out and the lorry swerves to avoid?

@@PedroConejo1939 to us, that's the outside. we consider the median (central reservation) the middle, so anything towards the middle is inside and anything away from the middle is outside.
@@kenbrown2808 I know, but I was writing from a UK perspective. It kind of works if you remember that the inside is the left in both countries. Strangely, I think the terms swap on roundabouts here, but I'm not sure if that's officially or not. Usually when I'm writing for an American audience, I use left and right.
The driver of the blue Renault @2:16 ought to have been a bit more accommodating and was even giving a mixed message by partly falling back. Those sorts of situations are common on urban roads in the UK and traffic flow is aided by not forcing vehicles in the left lane to a stop by stubbornly holding position. In this case it just seems to have been inept driving as I don't think the driver was trying to get in front of the lorry; it just looks as if they misjudged the situation.
When I'm cycling on single track roads and approaching a left-hand bend I do like to move over to the right so I can see around the bend earlier and if a a vehicle is approaching the driver sees me, but on a right hand bend I try to stick to the left as best as I can
Which is the correct way; giving yourself 'a view' of the corner.....Some cyclists need to watch motorcycle advanced videos, in regards to positioning; too many think they're on a closed road....But remember, safety over positioning.
@@Andy_ATB Problem is that you get honked at and close passed on bends by motons so many feel intimdated into not moving out to give themselves a better view.
The clip at 4:30: If you can't see part of the road, always assume there is someone there.
When you can confirm with your eyes that that isn't the case, you're in the clear. This mantra also works wonders when driving country lanes where sight lines are poor.
Very true. I've also heard the expression "What you can't see can hurt you".
Clip 11: I've learned from watching enough dash cam footage that any time I'm exiting a roundabout and there is a car on my left, to be very wary in case that car continues around the roundabout (regardless of signalling or not). As Ashley has often stated, try to drive in a "staggered" formation and not alongside another vehicle. Of course, that simply isn't always possible, in which case, adjust speed and gear appropriately in case "things go pear shaped" as Ashley himself would put it!
Similarly also, if you are in the correct lane to continue going round a roundabout, be prepared for someone in the lane to your right to exit it.
@TheWoodIsPoo You are not being harsh at all and I totally understand what you are saying. After now rewatching Clip 11, something comes to mind regarding the cam car's lane decision:
The cam car might not have been able to get into Lane 1 even if it wanted to, due to the very fact of the white Mercedes catching it up, thereby cutting off that option.
Even after the cam car was cut up by the white Mercedes at around 4:57, the black Audi SUV came by in Lane 1 at considerably higher speed at around 5:02, again also cutting off the option of the cam car moving to Lane 1 after the first incident.
Of course, none the above answers whether or not the cam car would have used Lane 1 of the slip road anyway, in the absence of other vehicles in Lane 1. But I get what you are saying as a general case and I too, often see "slower" vehicles using Lane 2 of a sliproad to join a motorway when Lane 1 slip road is empty. Another variation of this is when a driver DOES use Lane 1 sliproad but for whatever reason (and despite huge signs) doesn't realise Lane 1 sliproad is a lane addition to the main carriageway and ends up changing straight into Lane 2 when Lane 1 is clear.
I often find it advantageous to use Lane 1 of a sliproad rather than Lane 2, as it is often a lane "addition" to the main carriageway and avoids direct conflict with the traffic on the main carriageway, whereas Lane 2 slip road involves an actual merge with main carriageway traffic. (Though taking care to refrain from inappopriate undertaking thereafter - for example HGV's on main carriageway now wanting to move into the new Lane 1).
Also, when the main carriageway is choka-block with traffic, often Lane 1 sliproad will offer a smoother transition into the traffic. Of course, every situation is different and one really has to read the road and the signs in advance to make the best slip road lane decision and not base it exclusively on what "often" works best. Naturally, such lane decisions need to be made before the two slip road lanes are seperated with chevrons bounded by double solid white lines. I have seen drivers illegally crossing over such markings when they discover they haven't selected the lane that offers the best progress. I never do that and will just accept if I have not chosen the "lane of least resistance" and carry on until I merge onto the main carriageway,
One thing I find really useful at motorway slip roads are those large blue signs showing the lane configurations coming up. They are so large, I am sure they can be read from outer space! Those signs are useful both when on the sliproad as well as when on the main carriageway. Even on stretches of motorway one is familiar with, they can be a good reminder of lane configurations, of which there are many different setups.

What a collection of seriously troublesome clips. There's a couple that should have definitely gone plodwards - the Beemer jumping the red light because the person in front let someone out, the pavement wallah passing the horse, and that last one with the bus and the bike. Every one of those needed prosecuting.
Clips 5 and 8 - perfectly illustrate what I have happen to me regularly with emergency vehicles on the nearby main road, except here, there's rarely a pull-in so most drivers pull as far left as we can (the road here is mostly wide enough to allow that and leave room for the ESV to pass) and still people barrel past traffic that for them, has apparently stopped for no good reason. The clearly give no thought as to what is actually going on, let alone try to scan ahead and see what's cracking off.
Seriously agree, the BMW driver needs at least a few points for that, both for using their car as a potential weapon threatening the cammer, then jumping the red. Reckless and dangerous driving. And the bus driver is meant to be a professional driver...

A personal favourite of mine is when we all pull in (like heroes) and then when the ambulance has passed, the Audi driver 12 back puts the foot down in pursuit to skip everyone, often jumping a light too. If you didn’t laugh….
The first clip (prior to the intro) with the cyclists is a good illustration of:
1. Always drive at a speed whereby you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear. Maybe even slower on a narrow country road
2. Don't be pressured to drive faster by someone close behind you (not saying that was the case here, just a general comment in such a situation)
3. Consider horn use on the approach to blind bends (though yes I know, risk of frightening as yet unseen horses)
That's definitely a corner I'd use the horn on.
on a country road those cyclists could have run into a tractor with a front mounted flail or front end loader with a one ton bail on the front . it could even be stationary

@@PedroConejo1939 Wales in the back roads is the worse of all I find. You can go all day without encountering anyone. Then suddenly a farmer in a 4x4 comes round the bend at speed. Can usually hear the tractors and they move slower. Generally, I feel pretty safe there as long as watch speed according to how far I can see ahead. . Especially on the many descents there! Only takes a second lifting off the brake and can be going into a blind corner a little too fast! You need some experience and hyper-alertness on those roads for sure.
@@andrewnorris5415 I've lived in Pembs, so I know about Wales and those enticing hedges that are actually stone walls with sod laid on top. There's also the issue of mud running down the road, I've seen a number of drivers ditched because of it.

I think Cyprus has the worst driving in Europe. Red traffic lights mean stop in the middle the junction if at all. Its scary diving there. however its ten times more scary in a taxi.
Have a Cypriot friend who's driven me round near enough the whole island and... Phew, let's just say they have a different culture over there
Walking through Larnaca one day I actually saw a guy driving with a mobile phone jammed under his ear a cigarette in his mouth and looking down a long lens camera resting on the dash board.
6:00 Clip 14. Thanks for sharing my clip Ashley! So this is at my workplace Morrisons Ipswich. That poor lady, I did start waving my hands at her trying to stop her going more forward but she didn’t see, her observations were not great. Also I wanted to address this, I’ve been reading through the comments and seen some regarding my show plate in the window just wanted to say that I do have a front and rear plate on that is just a 2nd show plate non-legal on my dash just for looks really, “not a Plate that has fell off my front bumper”.
Clip 9: The kids are running across without looking but why keep going when you know there's a hazard in the road. If they'd have hit them I'm pretty sure the police would be asking why they didn't hit the brake rather than the horn
It's in Crookes Sheffield and very well sighted so she could have seen the situation unfolding, what's more I thought the amendments to the code give pedestrians more priority. Terrible and impatient driving.
To be fair she does brake in time (just) and the horn/swearing is probably a fear response. I’m not sure the new Highway Code specifically covers kids running into traffic. I think she sees the first one go and the reaction from the rest of the group and then didn’t expect the 2nd one. I might’ve slowed earlier, but then again I wasn’t there and the psychology of a fear response is different for everyone (fight, flight, friend and freeze are the basic 4 but there are variations even in these). Although fear is a superpower (10 points if you get the reference) in some, it can actually dull reaction times in others. Just look before you run in front of the fast moving metal bricks that’ll kill you…..

That flatbed was slightly less at fault in my mind at 2:00 because a) it was further ahead and b) if the SUV did not want to give way and yet failed to push forward before the merge despite their being plenty of room, he should of either done that or backed off not played silly games especially with such a large vehicle.
Not to mention, the car is sat in the truck's blind spot, not overtaking. Such a dangerous thing to do.
The car could have eased off to let the truck out without hindering the traffic flow but if the wagon was forced to stop, everyone has a slightly awkward time of it. No way would I spend that long alongside an HGV. Very poor driving from the car but the truck shouldn't really have just pulled over even if the car driver was being a knob.
The SUV should have either cleared ages before or held back. Sitting there was just asking for trouble.
@@pelicanofpunishment6 the car is not in the trucks blind spot..the mirror blind spot is on the nearside. Car is on the same side as the driver. I think the car driver is simply oblivious and not paying attention. He cannot see there is an obstruction in the left lane so does not ease back to allow the truck to change lanes with more room to spare. On saying that had there been a collision the truck would have been at fault for an unsafe lane change.
Is a clear rule about lane changing. There is not a "merge in" situation. LGV changing lane, not merging.
If accident happens - will be fault of a lorry driver.
Only fault for car driver - he/she encourage lorry to change lane - giving a more space (slowing down) so lorry driver may be think: this car see me and make space for me. And mirrors cannot tell full story what is behind.
The last time i asked someone a question like "do you know what lane you're supposed to be driving in?" i got told to be quiet or get out and walk if i don't like their driving 😂😂
I've been with some drivers who I'd have taken them up on their offer to get out, unfortunately those are the ones who never do....

I'm 50 and got involved in driving via my father and grandfather in the mid 70s. Both had boatyards on the Norfolk Broads, and both had various different road vehicles. My grandfather used to sit me on his knees and let me steer his 1960s Mini pickup on the backroads when I was 3 or 4 years old, plus, he also let me steer boats every Saturday on the river as an example of how to drive the boat to the hirers. At the time, father used to transport boats using a Land Rover and trailer, and when the need to transport bigger boats arose in 77, bought a Bedford TK tractor unit and 40ft trailer to accommodate.
I was 5 at the time, and, from then until 2018, driving was my main interest and passion, from proper Minis to 44t artics (which I drove for over 25 years.). I did pretty well at school and college, but was hell bent on driving a big lorry. So I did, and loved it for many years, despite all the usual adverse traffic conditions, long hours, poor facilities, poor wages, etc, blah yada, stuff that still causes issues....... Drivers and incidents like those shown in this video were probably the most commonplace and unchanging sight I witnessed daily, sometimes hourly, throughout, and a contributing factor in my decision to quit mile munching for a living. However, don't think I'm getting all virtuous here! I passed my car test in 89 and have probably driven at least 2 or 3 million miles in the interim. Law of averages dictate that during all that time spent on the road, SOMETHING had to happen, and I experienced my quota of mishaps, probably not 50/50 my fault/their fault, but certainly 40/60 or 30/70. I ain't perfect either.
I'd like to say thanks to Ashley for presenting it how it is: Objectively, realistically, and educationally. In 98% of the dashcam videos I've seen, the cammer seems to be equally at fault as the person they're filming, be it via excessive speed/insufficient gap/braking distance, lane discipline (probably the most common faux pas), aggression, impatience, misguided self righteousness, unawareness (especially regarding size of vehicle and required space to operate said vehicle, including plenty of hgv drivers whom I've witnessed causing, then subsequently denying, ££££s of damage), you get the gist......
What is it about getting behind a steering wheel that causes even the otherwise most intelligent beings (brain scientists, rocket surgeons etc) to morph into utter morons?! Poignant example, as it seems that the bigger the budget and the bigger/more expensive/exclusive the car, the bigger and more self righteous/condescending the owners/drivers seem to become.

Clip 14 . People with such poor manoeuvring skill really ought not to be driving . Good drivers reverse into spaces ; poor ones reverse into passing cars , pedestrians, shopping trolleys … because they park the wrong way round , which is actually harder to do anyway .
Just to play a little devils advocate here, some of us cannot reverse into spaces as we need wheelchair access from the boot, many of these store carparks thoughtfully place a bollard in the centre of the boot, even in disabled bays.. They think, "Logic? What is logic?"
@@gareth14111984 or need to load your purchases into the boot. when I was young, about three quarters of the car parks in my area had the parking bays at a 45 degree angle, which made it easy for our land yachts to pull in and back out of the bays. then some bean counter figured out they could squeeze in one more bay per dozen if they set all the bays at 90 degrees. amusingly, it is the smaller cars that seem to have the most trouble getting lined up with the bay.
Not always great to reverse into a space. My EV has its charging port on the nose. If I'm charging I have to drive in as rapid chargers tend to have short cables, or if I'm destination charging it avaoids a cable running the length of the car. Not ideal, but it is what it is.

8:30 That almost looks intentional, assuming there's no vehicles beside the overtaking bus (Which seems to be the case from the footage) there's no reason for the overtaking bus to swing in and then out again. Absolutely piss poor driving, really held my breath during that clip. Hope the bus company has been sent this footage.
Nah they were pulling into the stop to see if anyone was going to signal that they wanted to hop on. It’s quite a common thing for them to do.
Which worryingly just suggests they hadn’t actually seen the bike or completely forgot the size of the bus.

2:00 the blue Renault is definitely more at fault in my opinion. They were hanging about in a lorrys blind spot, which is not only dangerous because the lorry driver can't see them, but also because they couldn't see the indicators and the cars parked on the left, so they'd have no idea what the lorry is going to do. They didn't brake until they saw the lorry encroaching into their lane. It should be common sense to give a lorry a wide berth unless you're overtaking.
The driver of the Renault SUV is an idiot. He should have simply eased off and let the the lorry out. I'm old, passed my test back in 1964 so would probably have done what is now considered unacceptable and given the driver a flash to verify I was letting him out. Whatever, if a lorry and a car have a coming together it's usually the car that comes off worse.
If there was a collision, the lorry would have been at fault. Yes the blue car driver was a bad driver, but the lorry still should have stopped and dropped in behind.

Clip 5 from Dashcam Hull: I've had similar happen many times. It is surprising how many drivers don't spot an emergency vehicle in their mirrors and then wonder why I'm pulling over, sometimes getting rather hot under the collar about it. And in some cases, even after the penny has dropped and the EV goes past, the driver behind then tailgates me as we set off again. Not sure if it's to try and hide their own "oversight" or what.

Had a young bloke in a trade van tailgating me the other morning on my commute to work on a 60mph single-lane country road. I was doing 60mph. He was behind me for about two miles. This genius finally made his move and overtook me - on a double-blind bend. Luckily for him, no tractor (they are common on that road) was coming the other way to send him to an early grave.

Someone I know had an almost identical situation, nervous horse (they have to learn by doing), and this person mounts a curb/gravel driveway, the sound of the crunching gravel obviously spooking the horse.
Passing people on bikes too close is bad enough, but with horses it is unforgivable since horses have their own instincts and a rider is never in full control like with a bike.

3:34 Think the motorcyclist would get away with the speeding ticket as he won't have a reg plate on the front. Only one camera is in use at any one time in one of those vans.
I've seen this (new?) type vans with 2 cameras: Speed one at back, and second at front (through front window) propably for vehicles without numberplate at front.

Highway Code Rule 213 states: "On narrow sections of road, on quiet roads or streets, at road junctions and in slower moving traffic, cyclists may sometimes ride in the centre of the lane, rather than towards the side of the road." Your viewer perhaps knew this Rule 213 by slowing down and, observing the first person riding a cycle thinking others might follow. That was a narrow country road anything could be around that corner, broken down car, children walking home, horse riders, tractor, anything......., so go slow and prepare to stop on such roads. You can see the loose debris on the inside of that corner with many pot holes just before the blind turn which would have thrown them off which the riders are clearly avoiding and slowing right down, I know it has happened to me. The driver was spot on driving carefully and cared for other road users.

anyone riding or driving on a single track road must always be expecting someone to be coming the other direction at speed, and position themselves accordingly. this applies to both the camera car, which did well, and the cyclists, who did somewhat less well.

We were just discussing how she uses this road on her bike and doesn’t like it as it’s narrow and the cars drive to fast. Her response was wow that was close why would you cycle on the wrong side of the road round a corner like that. The video doesn’t show just how fast they were going too, absolutely crazy behaviour and unfortunately people like this give cyclists a bad reputation

This is a daily occurrance. There are so many people in the middle lanes of motorways doing under the speed limits, and nobody seems to want to overtake the slower moving vehicles.
There are times where I find myself undertaking them, especially if I am going to be coming off at a junction a bit further up.
Clip 2: "The foot paths are used by pedestrians". Yes, but they are also used to park cars.
Actually against the law in Scotland now (enforced about as well as any other non speed camera-able traffic laws….) though given everyone seems to drive a tank these days, proper parking on both sides would rarely leave enough space for even a cyclist.

Also taking away free parking some years ago got rid of many or most of the street parked cars here. I think many parked here to then take the bus or subway downtown.

Parking on one side maybe could work, but I'm not sure it's practical or within the budgets of local councils. It's really weird, because it would be councils who ticketed any pavement parkers and got the fine money.... Which usually would mean they go at it with gauleiter like glee.
@@mjudec Here it was possible. Now there are hardly any street parking in my neighbourhood. The residents have their own driveways or garages. When it was free, most cars were not locals. They parked here to take the bus or subway to their destination downtown, where there were no free parking.
Parking is free from 8 to 8 in the nights and on Sundays and «red» days.
The locals can buy a yearly parking ticket for around 500 Euro.
I must add that public transit is very good here, so most people don’t need to drive in most cases.
That bus pass at 08:40… I had a bus driver do that to me twice in London! Same bus driver both times in the space of 5minutes.
Note to nextbase users: your dashcam records 2 copies of your video - a low-res one, and a hi-res version. Clip 1 with the cyclists was the low-res version (you can tell by the typeface on the writing) - the other copy will have a better image quality. I found this by accident, because i was really disappointed with the quality of my videos, and couldn’t make out number plates; turns out I was watching the wrong copy! I’ve seen a few Nextbase videos recently that suggest other people also are not aware of this.

Finally had that moment where I recognised part of a road as being quite local to me. clip around 8:00 had me pointing at the screen! drivers can be awful round this area, especially when it backs up.
When you introduced the one about someone driving on the footpath I thought it was going to be a motor bike (which is bad enough). But a van!
I've been in a situation like that with a bus, I was coming down Rice Lane by the Sainsburys from the roundabout and was going straight, bot going left towards the clock tower, so I stayed in the lane. Next minute this bus just comes right next to me, probably about 2 inches away from me and gets stuck at the lights as I overtook him. Can't say he missed me, I have a bright orange bag.
With clip 15, when there is a long line of traffic, making turning right near impossible, turn left and turn around at the end roundabout or junction. It's just safer and keeps the traffic flowing.
2:04 I would put the main blame on the truck driver, yes the car driver was ignorant/selfish/self entitled for not getting in front or behind to help the truck, but the truck pulling out anyway was the dangerous move, should've slowed a lot earlier in the hope another would let him out, not wait until there is no room left and force it.
Whenever there's a clip like this the majority of commenters would blame the car. Yet if it was 2 cars and the one on inside was to do what the truck did everybody would say it was to the inside car at fault.

4:30 Ashley what’s your opinion on the policy some councils are pursuing of deliberately reducing lines of sight at roundabouts? I know there’s some evidence that having good lines of sight gives motorists the confidence to drive faster and not do deliberate checks, and this actually makes serious accidents more likely. However I’m not convinced and it’s certainly counterintuitive. What’s your view?

I am a professional road safety engineer. Roundabouts are safest when the lines of sight are equal on all approaches and appropriate for the circulating speed of the roundabout. As you alluded to, longer sight lines encourage drivers to drive faster. Additionally, uneven sight lines that encourage different speeds on each approach make it really hard for drivers to judge whether it is safe to enter the roundabout. Shorter sight lines can slightly increase total crashes, however, they drastically reduce injury crashes and almost eliminate fatal crashes.
Historically, councils have tried to get as much sight distance as possible at roundabouts and so, in many cases, they will need to correct this by reducing the line of sight on some approaches.

If I had enough money to pay the fine for cutting down the stupid fences put up at roundabouts for "safety", I'd have cut them down yesterday. Proper education saves more money than clumsy solutions such as those. Bloody stupid. Next you'll want to give car drivers blindfolds because seeing less = safer.

@@georgelane6350 thanks, this is refreshing to hear a professional view - it makes complete sense actually - I do like to have a long sight line, I like to approach at a speed which enables me to continue on to the roundabout but also stop if needed. On the other hand you get those who go at full pelt regardless and then the opposite extreme with drivers who can only really master what's in front of them so they will come to a full stop before even looking up to see if it's clear! There is a fine balance of unnecessary stop-start driving and being dangerous by going in too fast. Along with intentional fences I wonder if councils realise that bushes and other vegetation growing across islands and the like can add to the problem!
@@Umski maintainence is a massive issue in the UK. If you have vegetation right up against the roundabout, then that obviously won't be safe. A lot of councils just don't allow enough budget for maintainence because the councilors want to cut ribbons on new roads instead
Clip 1 is a major bug of mine, I see cyclists on the wrong side of blind bends too often.
2:16 looks like a classic case of blindspot hogging. Although I didn't see an indication from the lorry I did see brake lights from the Renault. Not sure if they were both slowing for each other but either way, Renault should have passed rather than bumble along in the right hand lane
at the 4:58 section. The white looks like they were on course for a spin out. you can just catch them start to spin at the very last moments. ABS is a fantastic tool, but it has its limits. and at 7:00 I bet they where consentrating to much to what was going on behind them than in front. Fantastic Commentery as usual Ash! I Love your videos and they have helpped me improve my awareness and self control in and out of the drivers seat. better to put your hands up and addmit you made a mistake and to learn from it than it is to get angry and blame others.

4:18 is a point in Sheffield I drive through often and I can attest for how bad the pedestrians there are at times. Even with all the crossings they’ll just step out without checking properly/at all

Two tips I got when learning to drive. 1. Whatever you think the last thing on earth the person in front is going to do, they're going to do it, in front of you, right now! 2. It's a two ton killing machine fully loaded and ready to go. Both have made me very alert and very aware of consequences. Drive safe and courteously people. It maybe your piece of road or your right of way, but is worth the time when it invariably goes wrong? Thanks for your content, it's always a plus to see care in your work ;)
Clip 4: Re "I love having a ringside seat in a stubborness competition". Yes, I can relate to that too. About equally as good is seeing a tailgater themselves getting tailgated moments after passing me. Or someone who was in such a hurry to pass me then getting stuck in traffic further up the road. Especially more satisfying if I'm turning off the road and not even part of the traffic jam!

I swear 99% of people use the horn wrong on a day to day basis. If someone pulls out infront of me in any way, i react to make sure i dont crash. Not react by jumping on the horn.
My logic for disagreeing with you at 5:07 is as follows: There's a queue of traffic. Cars at the front of the queue owe it to the cars behind them to get through the lights promptly, or you just hold up a lot of people.
This doesn't affect the car in the side road much. They should get let out by someone approaching the junction as the lights go back to red.
Let's say I'm the 5th car in the queue. I should get through on that green, and not be prevented from doing so by letting that car out. On the other hand, if I'm (say) 12th in the queue, the lights will be changing again as I get to the point that the cammer is in, so I let that car out.
Everyone is better off with this approach.
Obvs none of this excuses what the Beamer did.
A question for Ashley. At 4:38 the roundabout clip. Why is the vegetation allowed to grow around roundabouts? It just blocks people's view (in the case the red car). Shouldn't Council cut it back? Or is it allowed to grow, in the hope that people will stop before entering the roundabout?
Shorter sight lines actually improve safety because they encourage drivers to select a more appropriate (slower) speed.
1:37 ayyyy thats my clip i submitted 2~3 months back. Didnt realise editing took this long. That section is where i see a lot of people using the oncoming lane to turn right at the junction as well since this is a known traffic jam spot.

For a few of these clips I think Ashley is kind on the submitters. Clip 9 - Teenagers running into the road in front of you? Start slowing down as soon as you see it, “cover that footbrake”, my instructor used to say and I still say it to myself. Then the emergency stop wouldn’t have been as harsh or perhaps necessary because the vehicle would have been slower already.
Clip 20 - The warning signs are there from the beginning, the road the SUV is turning into doesn’t go anywhere, as soon as it swings back towards parallel with the road that needs an easing off and anticipation that it will just pull back out. Then it wouldn’t have been as near a near miss as it was.
Ref HGV and SUV . HGV can see parked cars so should either indicate intention to move out early or back off and allow SUV to pass . SUV should never sit in the indecision spot .( the larger vehicle needs more space and time to react so don't put the HGV driver into " what are you doing ?" Mode ) Either stay back or pass . As a HGV driver I expect the SUV to have the " must get past the truck" mentality so in this case would have backed off a touch then indicated and moved out behind them

Clip 1 Not a word mentioned of the cammer tailgating at around .3 to .4 of a second from the vehicle in front. The cammer had plenty of time to ease off.
One thing that I notice in these clips and that kinda baffles me is that after someone makes a mistake cam car (or sometimes others) always sit on their horn. I never ever use my horn AFTER someone did something stupid. What is the point? They already did the stupid and blaring my horn won't change that. But if I notice that someone is about to do something unwise I will let them know they should think again.
Sometimes it's to alert the person to the fact 'you're' there, lots of people will do something and afterwards STILL have no idea there's another vehicle.
@@owieprone I can understand that. But I have witnessed a lot of situations where people realize they are doing something wrong in the middle of doing and when someone aggressively honks at them they panick and get it even more wtong

I use the slip road onto the M4 from the M32 a lot and the incident shown in this video is so frequent, regular users don't even takes notice anymore.

4:48 I know that junction well. I’m fairness you’ve always got to be ready for people to jump out of the left lane at the last minute there. People are desperate not to go the wrong way there as they’d then have to go several miles down the motorway to the next junction before turning round. Hence they’re more willing to risk a crash. That’s no excuse for it of course, but we’ve all just got to be ready for them.
Clip member 2 on the M62, I can almost guarantee they were heading to Liverpool and know that there is a small section where it crosses the m6 that you have to get into lane 3 to go straight on
If I had a dash cam I'd probably have a few hundred roundabout clips. Happens everyday at one particular one on my commute.
Clip 4 ... I would have thought the lorry was more at fault as the blockage of the parked car was in his lane and the outside lane was not clear for him to move into.
clip 6 (3:17), would the motorcyclist have gotten caught considering the number plate is on the back
Clip 11 is the top of the M32 near Bristol, the car that cut across probably joined from the A4174 at J1 and was happily undertaking traffic while ignoring the clear signs saying lane 1 is M4 west only. Too common at that junction.
The undertaking car is definitely in the wrong but why oh why was the cammer in the lane they chose to turn left? I know that it is probably ok to turn left from that lane but surely only if overtaking another vehicle which they weren't. That just strikes me as being as bad as a lane hogger on a multilane road.

I love the counter intuitiveness of the camera van making the roads safer by partially blocking a live lane. If the van has a forward facing camera to get the plate of the bike then s/he could be caught but if not, the rider will have got away with that
Camera vans have forward facing cameras as well. It is enough for them to catch the front of a speeding bike and identify it as the same one that is (no longer speeding) departing visible in the front camera. There was only one exit from the road (other than driveways) between the biker seeing the van and the van though, so they didn't have many ways out of that situation where the plate wouldn't be seen.

By the look of the driver they got their licence decades ago. If it was anything like my dad's first wife, there was no test.
They arrived at the police station to get her licence. Police officer asked my dad "Can she drive, Doc?" Dad being the local physician. He said yes. "Righto, come back in an hour, it'll be ready".
Regarding forward observation, I like the advice "eyes of full beam".

5:05 I just knew the second Clip 12 appeared the BMW SUV was going to be an entitled, impatient, and angry driver.
People acknowledging and apologising for their mistakes, (which even the best drivers make), helps diffuse tensions, eases flow and ultimately makes driving around more pleasant. I think your "hands up if you need lesson" quip discourages behaviour that ought to be encouraged.

Probably not thinking. Sadly that's the reason many young lives are lost.
Probably seeing the first rider's line and assuming that meant the road was clear. The first rider should have called out the oncoming vehicle to alert those behind.
Because they all think they are in the tour de France in their stupid lycra outfits

Taking a line that is less risk of slipping. Bit of a case of following the wheel in front too - just like drivers locking on that Ashley talks about.
Of course what they should do is slow down so they can comfortably make the corner on the correct side of the road. Muppets was an accurate description.
Something that amazes me is when I pull in to the left possibly into a lay by to allow an emergency vehicle to pass, the traffic behind me follows and does the same. Then when the emergency vehicle passes me the vehicle behind me pulls out followed by all the other vehicles and overtake me as I am pulling out. Seems as though because I am the first to pull in and the last vehicle that the emergency vehicle clears that I end up loosing three or four positions on the road! Never worked that one out!
I'm not sure how it is in the UK but here in the US peds have right of way in crosswalks, so the driver at 4:14 should have yielded regardless of the ped looking or not

The incident at 4:15 - yeah, the pedestrians are totally ignorant there, but honestly as a driver when you see a group like this already spread across the road - just slow down and let them all pass unless there's a serious danger in doing that. Whenever I see a group like this I expect this sort of thing to happen - it's just a bit of a herd instinct that kicks in, and I don't mean anything mean by that.
As a pedestrian and cyclist, I must use the status I have in the highway code to show understanding of other road users and be aware that car and lorry drivers may not be able to take preventative action as quick as I can.
