Yes Sir! The YG's sounded superb. ...and just a quick suggestion Herb, please mention the total price of each system, just to put things in some kind of perspective. Thanks for a great tour of the show for those of us that live too far to attend.
I liked the Border Patrol / Volti room. It was smooth and yet dynamic. The presenters were offering everyone water, soda, or beer. I was totally parched from walking through all those rooms, and the soda water they provided me was VERY MUCH appreciated.
Agreed to all, headphones. BUT, I think Herb is so quirky cool man. There’s a future in RUclips for you sir. Love me some professor Herb! Keep up the good work.
Yes Herb the YG did sound amazing. Couldn't be there this year but this is the next best thing! Hoping there is a Linkwitz room this year for you to visit. :)
I have almost the Identical setup from Schiit-2 vidars as Mono Blocks /Freya Pre Amp /Gungnir Multibit Dac-all with Balanced inputs-BUT I use MagnaPlanar 6.1s with Bluejean custom cables-and The sound is awesome at 400 watts per channel-So Maybe it was the speakers in Herbs Video that didnt make the cut
Great video, really enjoy these thanks. If those were the stock tubes in the Schiit Freya, they could definitely be holding the system back. I checked in the video and it was set to use the tube stage when you filmed it. I have a Freya myself and the stock tubes are shockingly bad, and really do make a difference. Can't really complain when you consider the price of the Freya, but any owner should budget for new tubes imho.
The sound in the YG / Audionet room was amazing even on RUclips. I do not think we heard the soundstage or anything approaching what Herb heard, but we can tell it was good. In a different planet to the earlier rooms. The YG speakers are the least boxy box speakers. Not as good as the great horns, but very precise and not so closed in as others.
itoosh: Yep you just surmised why a lot of you morons buy top end hifi..to show off to you neighbours), anyone with an ounce of knowledge about audio knows your comment was retarded. You think you can judge an expensive loudspeaker at reduced bit rate and with those piddly little microphones he used to record it?, you are a joke.
Suzy Siviter Who says good need to be expensive? I built DIY speaker to save my money. You're right, you can't judge speaker by this video, but there is no doubt you can hear the wide imaging compared to others speakers he listened. Even if the acoustics in the other rooms was awful, it doesn't matter, we still can hear wider sound. Keep it chill
first time listening through headphones, and, indeed, sounds fine, much better than I thought possible via youtube's low bit rate, etc. fantastic binaural experience! headphones on, late at night, family asleep, i'm looking around thinking that someone's UP and out'a bed, but it's the video! cool!! as for sound at the show, feel bad for the presenters because a boxy hotel room just cannot make Good sound. if it's terrible or out of the ball park awesome, that comment is worthy, but concerning a presentation that is just "a bit" less than potentially best, I'd hold my tongue. thanks for all the reporting and work, stereophile. i'm getting that cap, too.
Analog Guy my mention was about quality of sound in RUclips videos of Michael. Probably you don't read me well. As about the "asshole" thing, I return it to you.You don't need to be rude, when you have different opinion with someone else
Darn right Herb, that YG set up really sounded spacious and full top to bottom ! Listening here through WIreWorld Starlight 7, Chord Mojo and Beyerdynamic Amiron for sure is not like sitting in front of those YG's and Audionet, but I got pretty fine idea !
From their website: "Schiit is our name, and it's pronounced, well, like "hey man, that's some really good Schiit!" And now that we have your attention..."
Maybe its my cheap Sennheiser headphones but i'm not hearing that great of a soundstage with not much image specificity but the overall sound and balance is good. I was just thinking of a Stereophile show I went to years ago and Conrad Johnson had a room and they were playing a CD and I had to beg them to put some vinyl on because the CD wasn't very good.
You can try all of the latest streaming dacs, new hi def files, etc. etc -- will never reach the level of a well recorded 1960 mono or stereo LP-- sorry folks- never will-- But this avalanche, of affordable high end gear, is Astounding- we have new hope for the Hi- End, for the new , younger generation of listeners-- enough with 150k speakers, 100k turntables---bravo to the designers, stepping up, to meet this Huge market- our kids and grand kids ,Thank you ( Long live Triode 845 and 300B amps)--thank you Mr. Herb
herb, as one who was turned on to binaural by edward tatnall canby at audio magazine (by reading about his many forays into binaural, and bought the JVC binaural headphones, i listened with lthe monolith planar in ear 'phones. having listened to some of your earlier binaural presentations, i feel this has cemented my position that your cavalier way of hanging the mics willy nilly with zip ties doesn't result in as good as you can do. the mics need to be anchored better and within some sort of ear pinna/canal system to capture what i know is possible. as crude as i felt the JVCs were in comparison to what sennheiser uses. with the JVCs, listening back to the recorded program was revelatory. one ting i captured was myself as a passenger in a van with friends playing guitar and singing took me back to that night in a vivid way. a recording of crickets just outside my front door in panorama city california one night was like sitting in the same place. as a safety reference, i also recorded my angry ex-wife at my front door demanding the children at 11pm after we returned from san diego for weekend visitation. i have never had the desire to hear that so i never did. really, there is little difference to you having the mics clipped to your shirt. i am not trying to dis you, just to give you a reality check. i respect you and your career and have read many a review penned by you and never thought to criticize you, just so you know. ...hifitommy
She DARKED the Sun perfect title to play on a Schiit system you’re kidding right? Oh and I’m listening through a 50 yr old Leak 30 plus amp and 1984 JBL TLX6 speakers with $5 cables and it sounds real good! Deep tight bass clear highs and full vocals but no Snake Oil!
Herb, I think the Schiit Vidar amplifier can be configured as either stereo or mono. $699.00 for stereo (1 unit) and $1,400.00 a pair of monoblocks (2 units). www.schiit.com/products/vidar
20:35 Kinda surprised that it isnt plugged into a surge protector. I am new to the high end music stuff but I am used to plunging all my expensive electronics into a surge protector.
Love both analog and digital sound, two different worlds both pleasurable! But I don't care for people making snarky comments about record's! Surface noise doesn't bother everyone, so keep your snide comments to yourself and stop picking on Michael fremer!
I'm looking for part two , three and four or more. What was so wrong with the Schiit room the speakers? I was and still am ready to buy Schiit to put together my system.
Herb what happened to the Sennheiser Ambeo for recording? It seems really good quality for recording esp for convenience. I’m sure it’s limited freq response sensitivity etc. Still they’re very good... What are using now for recording? Best wishes John
Walking through the rooms, introducing people and their gear and then listen... nice approach. (But I must add: I can't listen to audiophile near field recordings of voices any more, stuffed with that, sorry. This kind of music seems to be invented for showrooms at axpona, munich etc.) By the way, I saw no foot tappers, only some sort of a restless legs syndrome.
I find that it's funny gear and cable can be "organic"? Not the speakers material and design? Ain't that gears and cables should be "standard" and transparent without any tweaks?
Presbycusis, any reviewer past 55 years old should get tested by an audiologist and publish their results. Otherwise they are reviewing products they can't hear completely.
Lol. Hi-fi music is something else. I gave up hi-fi shows 10+ years ago. It's not an accident this community is made fun of, it's so close to some sort of cult, reminds me of the alternative medicine crowd.
Get real. Audio bitrate of this video is between 61 and 153 kBs , normally we would not even consider of making statements based on such low bit rates. Of course we notice differences between the audio sets, but it doesn’t say a thing about the real sound quality. Doesn’t mean I don’t like Herbs video about his impressions, though.
Dont forget the piddly little mics he is using, plus the room modes, ambient noise, speakers the viewer plays it through the list goes on, and people are actually praising the sound on this forum smh. This is why I do not respect Stereophile.
Wow yes that sounds awesome, such crispiness of the treble and a wide dynamic sound-stage, it sounds much better than the original!, if you haven't guessed so far this is all sarcasm, what a complete waste of video making recordings of speakers.
I'd love to blast dubstep on these things. The music that's played on these is trash. Has n o dynamic range at all. Lets see some flex on that 7.5 inch swoofer. make these babies jump
Herb just wait until you listen to the new Fischer & Fischer Audio Speakers with cabinets made of SLATE ! 😇🙂
Yes Sir! The YG's sounded superb. ...and just a quick suggestion Herb, please mention the total price of each system, just to put things in some kind of perspective. Thanks for a great tour of the show for those of us that live too far to attend.
i know I'm quite off topic but does anybody know a good place to watch new series online?
@Enoch Cannon flixportal xD
@Seth Noah Thank you, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it!!
@Enoch Cannon no problem :D
Herb is the precious of Stereophile
Wish we heard the same tracks in each room. That said, Herb is infectious and I loved the video.
I liked the Border Patrol / Volti room. It was smooth and yet dynamic. The presenters were offering everyone water, soda, or beer. I was totally parched from walking through all those rooms, and the soda water they provided me was VERY MUCH appreciated.

Herb. Salk is a Michigan company. Not Minnesota as you said!
The cabinets on the Salk speakers look amazing....I’m sure they’re great in-person.
They are. I have been to the factory and they are gorgeous!

Thanks for taking us with you Herb, l like your style of presentation.
Great video.
The YG's sound stage feels enormous!
Bigger than the original recording? LOL.
I guess you have ultra poor speakers so you can't understand what we heard so you got little angry. LOL at your face.
itoosh: Yep you just surmised why a lot of you morons buy top end hifi..to show off to you neighbours), anyone with an ounce of knowledge about audio knows your comment was retarded.

itoosh: Apologies, just some of the audio fools wind me up sometimes, dont get me started on mains conditioners and expensive mains cables.
This is the only cool guy at Stereophile. A real man's man and poet.
first time listening through headphones, and, indeed, sounds fine, much better than I thought possible via youtube's low bit rate, etc. fantastic binaural experience! headphones on, late at night, family asleep, i'm looking around thinking that someone's UP and out'a bed, but it's the video! cool!! as for sound at the show, feel bad for the presenters because a boxy hotel room just cannot make Good sound. if it's terrible or out of the ball park awesome, that comment is worthy, but concerning a presentation that is just "a bit" less than potentially best, I'd hold my tongue. thanks for all the reporting and work, stereophile. i'm getting that cap, too.
Nice video with good sound without background trash sounds(Michael Fremer, do you read me?)
Athanasios Leftheriotis digital audio is Shit! Cold, lifeless, without soul! Give me surface noise any day!
Analog Guy my mention was about quality of sound in RUclips videos of Michael. Probably you don't read me well. As about the "asshole" thing, I return it to you.You don't need to be rude, when you have different opinion with someone else
Awesome, can't wait for more.
The Volti, Border Patrol , and Triode Wires gear looks and sounds amazing.

Pretty sure Salk is in Michigan, not Minnesota. Just an FYI...
He said you are playing with 'Schiit" in the first minute and a half. Good one...
From their website: "Schiit is our name, and it's pronounced, well, like "hey man, that's some really good Schiit!" And now that we have your attention..."
LOL! I have the Valhalla; I knew the moment he walked in the Schiit showroom, he was gonna 'drop' one on us.
5:20
wow phenomenal sound the great show in the world

Herb, You didn't say what ya thought after listening to the Volti Audio room? Thanks for the tour.
Volti Audio has such an open sound.
Herb
It's clear that Jim Salk has his Schiit together!

You would need to buy surge protectors with $12,000 power cables on them going to the wall outlet. Hehe
Love both analog and digital sound, two different worlds both pleasurable! But I don't care for people making snarky comments about record's! Surface noise doesn't bother everyone, so keep your snide comments to yourself and stop picking on Michael fremer!
we love Herb!
dont you wish herb was your uncle.you wood have something to look forward to at thanksgiving.
Herb: Are you going to see what is up with Benchmark? Be interested to know what is up with them. Thx.
Yeah to Volti Audio.
That Audionet Stern premp is massive at 17:44
"it has a woofer section" - "HHMMM!" ^^
Next speaker purchase will be from Salk 100%
Jim is a great guy that won’t try and sell you anything you don’t need.
Is there a good variety of headphones at the AXPONA to try out?
I'm looking for part two , three and four or more. What was so wrong with the Schiit room the speakers? I was and still am ready to buy Schiit to put together my system.
What's the wattage on the monoblocks? Need something for my Infinity Kappa 7s. Any suggestions as I'm kinda new to audio. Thanks
Herb what happened to the Sennheiser Ambeo for recording? It seems really good quality for recording esp for convenience. I’m sure it’s limited freq response sensitivity etc. Still they’re very good...
What are using now for recording? Best wishes John
No oversampling...yeah that makes it sound better LOL.
that's a young John Goodman
where are the lab coats ! love this guy.
WTF? He's SURPRISED that an external XO would sound better than an internal XO????
Walking through the rooms, introducing people and their gear and then listen... nice approach.

Wrong price on the vidar....
I find that it's funny gear and cable can be "organic"? Not the speakers material and design? Ain't that gears and cables should be "standard" and transparent without any tweaks?
The camera guy needs to stay on the friggin equipment!!!!!!! he didnt even focus on the Kronos TT i mean ffs
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It's like he was more fascinated with the back of Herb's head.
$1400 for a pair of their 6ft speaker wires is affordable?
It is when you compare it to cables costing ten times that. You could easily get a loan for $1400, so that makes it affordable.
Affordability is the one thing, necessity the other.
If we lived by necessity alone, desire wouldn't exist.
mrpositronia That’s true. But I hope it is not desire what binds you with cablery.
Desire knows no bounds. I can't even afford $140 right now, but I would never begrudge people who can. It's none of my business.

$599US per pair,,no each.
Audiophile cables are the biggest snake oil that ever existed
Leon davinchi good, go to target, buy you lamp cord and be happy
The binaural centenarian man ;)

Sorry - THAT music, thumbs down
