    LESSON NOTES
In our video on Leadership Behaviors ( • Leadership Behaviors: ... ), we saw two dimensions of focus: task focus and relationship focus.
In 1964, Robert Blake and Jane Mouton published ‘The Managerial Grid’. They later renamed their central idea as the Leadership Grid.
Blake and Mouton’s Leadership Grid plots a leader's degree of task focus versus their person focus, and identifies five leadership styles. They scored each of these on a scale from 1 to 9.
    1. Impoverished Management: Low Results-Low People (1,1)
    2. Authority-Compliance Management: High Results-Low People (9,1)
    3. Middle-of-the-Road Management: Medium Results-Medium People (5,5)
    4. Country Club Management: High People-Low Results (1,9)
    5. Team Management - High Production-High People (9,9)
In 1991, Blake added two further styles that he and his colleagues described as:
    • 9+9 paternalism/maternalism
    • Opportunism
    RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
    1. THinking about your own 'natural' style of leadership, where would you say it falls on the Leadership Grid - scoring 1 to 9 on each of concern for results and concern for people (2 MC CPD Points)
    2. What improvements would you like to make to your leadership practice, as a result of this insight? (3 MC CPD Points)

    RECOMMENDED READING
There are a vast number of Leadership books - perhaps more than on any other management-related topic. And there is also a huge range represented in different lists of the best. This no-doubt reflects the different contexts for leadership.
So, any recommended reading list of leadership books must be particularly subjective. I have chosen those that made me think, and which are of particular value to managerial leaders: not sportspeople, military leaders, or CEOs. In no particular order:

I've already done a video that looked at the importance of balancing concern for task with concern for relationships: ruclips.net/video/3H8sWkqGQOU/видео.html. Robert Blake and Jane Mouton used this idea as the basis for a model with five leadership styles: the Blake and Mouton Leadership Grid.
