@@CaliKim29 I am in south central WI, zone 5a. We can experience one or two polar vortexes each winter with temps way below zero for days.
I learn a lot from many gardeners, for example, never would have thought about growing dahlias. I also learn from some RUclips gardeners I do not care for, I watch their videos for a different perspective, but seldom comment, most of the time they never reply anyhow.
Actually, I was going to post a Awesome-OK - and sucky garden tour, then it began to rain, ist time in 2 weeks, yeh.
Your garden is beautiful, mine is a bit more, rough. I let things hang around for keeping living roots in the soil before the next planting, and let flowers go to seed for the birds.
That is what I truly love about gardening, it is so individual. I am in my later years, I need to take care of my Kathy, can no longer go kayaking, camping, the list is too long, but I can garden and bring nature into my backyard.
I will let you know when I post that video, have not posted since I planted potatoes in the spring, potatoes fell into the OK category, mainly because of my lovely jumping worms.
Sorry I go on and on, I just love talking gardening.
      Stay Well!!!!

Got it! My 2 dahlias are Vancouver (white & magenta) North facing front yard entry way. They've turned completely brown, sickly, powdery mildew. I've left other tubers in the ground & they never came back. This year I shall dig up & store.

Grew Dalias for the first time this year, so this was very useful and relevant information for me. And perfect timing for me as frost is around the corner here in Michigan. Thank you for sharing! ❤

Hi Kim!! This is my first time growing dahlias. I just knew that I had killed it. It just took a while to grow. Then I think the heat stressed it out but the flower is now looking so pretty. I have even bought smaller one as well. I will try to stake up the bigger one. It is starting to get cooler here. It now goes down to the 40's at night but 70 to 80 during the day. They are still budding and sending up flowers. I am just not sure when I should call it quits on them and dig up the tubers? Thanks Kim for starting me on the Dahlia journey. Take care.

I like to store my tubers in vermiculite in plastic shoe boxes. Storage temp 40-50 degrees. If I leave them in the ground for the winter, I mulch with leaves, cover with plastic or a tarp and put more mulch and soil on top.
Western WA is wet in the winter and it's important to protect them from too much rain which can cause rotting.

I planted my Daliah plant in a small one gallon. But I want to try and keep the plant alive over the winter. What type of pot should I keep it in until spring? I have hard frosts.
